I promise you, it’s not as scary as your mind is making it. I'm fairly young and I have been dealing with what I believe is a mental disorder. Although I often feel like I'm faking it, I reassure myself, "Why would you fake something and tell no one?" But that doesn't seem to work and my brain is still telling me I'm overreacting to sad days. My "condition" includes mainly feelings of worthlessness, with occasional lack of confidence and often thoughts of self harm/ suicide.
Anyways I'm wanting to see a therapist because I want to get a diagnosis, a word for my emotions. I've taken online quizzes but they all just recommended I seek professionals and they're right. My city is VERY rural and I don't know any therapists for hours of driving. Plus many therapists here, if any, are religious and I don't want that because I feel they will be more judgmental. How do I get help/ do I need it?

I found it easier to go when I realised whatever the therapist asked me it was my choice whether to answer and I could even leave the room if I wanted. Sounds obvious but at the time I was nervous I was going to feel trapped or made to confront things I didn't want to face.

    • @danielwalsh8405

If "anyone" is being confrontational w/ you, tell them "it's none of their business;"
ask them, "Why don't you mind your own business," and if you can find something
to pick on about them do it! Or, put out an evasive: "I'm not comfortable talking
about this subject!" Like if some THERAPTIST, asks if you have ever been
molested sexually, (and you're not ready to talk about it), say "No." Later, say you
would like to talk about somethin', but not everything, go home, come back.

Trust your gut instinct, your body will let you know if you are comfortable around someone or not. Don't be afraid to get the help you deserve. Therapists are there to guide you and help you discover yourself, so finding one you click with is essential to growth and healing process. I really want to know what I'm feeling, or what it's called. I want to be diagnosed so that I won't have to question myself everyday about how I'm feeling. I want to know what's wrong so that it could get fixed. but I'm scared to open up to my parents. every time I try to hint at them that I feel like I have depression or anxiety they kind of just blame it on something else. like, I can _feel_ that it's not caffeine it's like I can tell the difference if my heart palpitations are caused by the coffee I drank earlier or if it's what I assume my anxiety. I've taken a lot of online quizzes and answered them truthfully and all of the results were to seek professional help. I feel like I'm faking it though, but I also think I'm not?? sadly, I ran to self harm and find myself relapsing almost every month. I'm now starting a journal to see if what I'm feeling is consistent and so far... same things for the past 3 months.
I'm sorry if this comment was all over the place. I doubt anyone read this anyway. but if you did, do you think this is depression, anxiety or possibly something else?

I think that you should speak with someone (counselor) to let them know how you feel. To be honest I am incredibly nervous. There are so many thoughts spiraling in my head and my brain just won't shut up. But at the same time I am incredibly proud of myself. After all these months of telling myself that I wasn't allowed to see a therapist (I constantly told myself that my problems weren't bad enough and that I was simply looking for an excuse for my behavior that I am not proud of) I finally made the first step and asked for help. +Kati Morton (Mental Health Vlogger) ... I asked me parents. They said they couldn't afford it and issues I thought I had were just a chemical imbalance and I just need to see an herbalist and they need a tune-up, too. They acted like my problems weren't any kind of problems at all. I reluctantly agreed to start elsewhere. I have been with an herbalist/chiropractor for a month or so. I physically feel better, able to breathe and whatnot (I had a misaligned rib), but as far as mental health (death thoughts and suicide ideation, ADHD, and depression), I feel absolutely the same as before. Maybe worse. Mom has not seen improvement on my ADHD, so he changed my "prescription" (herbs), but apparently I got better at hiding my depression... She knows I have depression, but I don't think she understands how bad it really is and I don't have the words to describe it to her. And then there is the thoughts. The thoughts that never leave. The thoughts that randomly pop into my head that I KNOW are incorrect but they are so hard to ignore. Like... delusions. Delusions that I know are delusions but at the same time can't stop them. And they act as though it is nothing. It was hard enough to be my own bad guy. I don't want help; I need it. I want to sit in my room and do nothing but cry and sleep. Being your own bad guy? REALLY hard. I wanted my parents to do that for me. To force me to go so I didn't have the taunting option of not getting help. But they didn't. At this point, I don't want to ask again. It will get worse. Fine. Let it get worse. Eventually, maybe it will be undeniable Maybe I will stop caring what others think, and talk back to the voices even when others can hear me. At that point, the point of which where I have lost every lost piece of sanity that I am so desperately holding onto right now, maybe then they'll see I wasn't joking when I said I needed a therapist. Or at that point, a psychiatrist. Maybe when I am no longer in what I believe to be the prodromal period of psychosis they will see, and finally start being the bad guy. I am not asking again. I have my answer. And honestly, I am not sure I want a different one. Because then I would have to be the bad guy. Maybe I will never leave the prodromal period. It started in sixth grade, maybe seventh. I am in tenth now.

I feel like I have a depression(my hobby is looking up mental illnesses because I am interested in psychology) but.. I don't know. I feel like what I have experienced is not so bad because I know that so many people go through something way worse than something I have experienced. I want to talk to therapist to figure out what is this thing that I am going through because I am so confused what it is. But I am concerned that it is not something so serious maybe and if I am just fooling myself that it is because I am so interested in it, uk. And maybe it is something that everyone goes through, uk. I will be very embarassed if it is... I feel like visiting the therapist will make it such a huge deal when it isn't...

Younse! Thank you for being so open and honest about sharing your feelings about depression. Often at times we feel like were alone, and were not. I think that you not diagnose yourself, but make an appointment or have someone that you trust make an appointment for you to see a professional to see what's going on. Please note that you can always do your research to find the right therapist for you and they'll put you in the right hands and find out whats going on. Avoid doing anymore research on what it is that you think you have and just make an appointment. Often at times our minds are like hamsters on a wheel and it causes us to think things that are not even true.

Something similar happend to me.. I didnt know what I was going thru and what was wrong with me but I physically couldnt get out of my bed (at least it's how it felt) and I just wanted to sleep it off, I'd get really bad headaches and my hair would fall out ALOT but I didnt want to go to the doctor because I was embarrassed she'd think l was crazy or something.. but I COULDN'T live like that (I have a 5yr old son) so I finally went and she said maybe it was stress and I wasn't satisfied so I made an appointment with a therapist and I've only had like 4sessions but I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety 😥 just make an appointment and make sure (I still question myself If I should even continue going its not easy)

#KatiFAQ Hi, Kati. Love your videos. :)
I wanted to ask if you could share any advice on how to open up to our emotions? In addition to anxiety & depression, I have trouble feeling my emotions at all. Instead, I often suffer from pretty bad constricted breathing, muscle tension, which only gets better when I manage to "guess" the emotion & communicate it. I think I learned to automatically disregard any emotions that were "unreasonable", not productive, scary, "weak"("Be a man!" etc) or created conflict, and now I can't really access them even though I want to.

Great video!! I remember sitting in my room for hours before I pressed the call button. But it was one of the best decisions I ever made. Me being on crutches at my first appointment kinda broke the ice at first so it made me less nervous. I kind of expected really intrusive questions but a lot were very general at my first session a bit like kati said at any regular appointment you may get those questions. And if you don't want to answer you don't have to. Say as much as you want to say, they go at the pace you want to go.
I honestly didn't think I would ever ever sit in a room and tell someone things I have never even told my closest family and friends but I'm starting to tell more now and I actually look forward to just off loading all the shitty bits to someone once a week. Being so true to yourself and dropping down the guard you build up around yourself even just for 50 mins a week can save your life!
I put off going to therapy for so so long at the times when I really needed it but it is so worth the nerves and anxiety of those first steps.
Also anyone from the UK please get help ASAP of your going to get therapy via the NHS. It's such such a long wait. But remember even if you are waiting and frustrated know that there is help coming to you and you've survived 100 % of your worst days so far so don't give up!
P.S #katifaq I am yet to cry in therapy, i struggle with crying in front of people anyway but is it normal not to cry even when talking about the worst things? I just kinda feel numb when talking about abuse?
    Xxxx

Moral is don’t feel afraid to tell your parents what you are going through because 99% of the time they are going to be supported and fine with it/you.

The first time I went to therapy I went with one friend of my father and I was so scared and embarrassed to tell him what was going on that I just told lies after lies. Then I left home (I'm over 18 now) and I think I"ll try again on my own after the holidays. I am pretty scared but ok, it may be really worthy. I really trust you, Kati! And I am so happy to have found your videos...Thank you very much for your support and your advices!

There's a great album by David Archuleta he recently released called "Therapy Sessions" and one song is called "Ok, Alright". I recommend giving it a listen. Music to me is very theraputic. Ever since I was a kid. :) I've read somewhere online that if you can't afford it, keep actively searching out content like this service and reading books for free.

Hey Kati is there a difference between therapy and counselling? I was seeing a counsellor and it wasn't really working out so I got referred to a therapist for therapy (and I have no idea what the difference is if there is one)

    • @theRealCrazyOne
      @theRealCrazyOne 5 лет назад +7

All counselors (who you see to talk about life/psychological issues) are therapists. Some therapists are counselors. When we say therapist in this context, we mean psychotherapist. Psychotherapists can be mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists (like Kati), social workers, psychiatric nurses, psychologists, or psychiatrists. There may be other licenses in other countries or states...but this is what is true in New York State (where I live).
Typically "going for therapy" and "going for counseling" are interchangeable terms. However, if we were to be a stickler about it, counseling is typically for problems that are more like life/adjustment related. It's more short term. The word therapy can be used in more serious contexts where a person struggles with a psychological disorder.
But, for all intents and purposes, the modern use of these two words is interchangeable. I'm a mental health counselor in training. I can say that I'm a therapist and that I do "therapy." I can also say that I'm a counselor and that I do "counseling."
A lot of times, it takes a few tries to find the right therapist/counselor. I'm really sorry to hear that you've had a bad time. Good luck!

I hope you are well. Maybe it could be helpful that you write down what triggers the social anxiety. You could then share that written document with the therapist, you don't even have to speak but they can read it. Or you can read from the paper sort of like a script. When did you self diagnosis? Can you write down examples of how you felt during specific situations? I wish you all the best. Light and hope are being sent your way. :)
