This project has been so complex that to see these fixtures glistening in all their originally intended glory is like seeing a miracle. Not without its insane amount of elbow grease! And it’s too bad to see the wear and tear it caused with all the unbearable heat. I thought the heat spike in SoCal was heavy. But over 100-degrees! In other news, learning about cicadas was oddly enriching. As we don’t get none in my parts.
This turned into such an ordeal. It was so much work right in the heat of summer but the results have been better than expected and we saved a bunch of money. We are still working with the roofer to get them put back. Hopefully soon. The cicadas are really cool, but they can be so loud at times.
I think he's the best! We're so lucky to have found him. (so this is an AI canned response - I think it needs to work on it's pronouns) But yes, Heather and our other volunteers are the best!!!!
It was a rough day. I don't think I'd do it again. Heather was so funny about the cicadas. I edited out half of the conversation!!! Just this week she called to say her dog was sniffing the ground one night and she went to see what it was smelling and sure enough, a cicada was coming up from the ground.
I so enjoy seeing the progress. In the future I’ll make a trip to Galveston to see the final results personally! Thanks for this lovely work you all are doing restoring this magnificent historical home.
It was not a good day to be working and normally we would not push ourselves in that kind of heat but we really needed to get these done. The shade is the only thing that saved us.
Take more breaks! Specially in the crazy heat we get some times... we need you healthy to do the house and the videos!😅😬🌞 Few weeks ago we got to 116 index. We are baked pizza by then Some days I can't do much out in the yard because you move, and you sweat. It would be amazing if the weather was always like Fall I admire you and all your work so much! The team too, I know they all work a lot. ♥
It is very hard to be productive in this kind of heat, but we were determined to get these things finished. I can't see doing something like this again. It was a lot for an old lady. Heather was a trooper. She is such a hard worker. We are blessed with great volunteers.
Those things seem like pre-twirlybird roof vents. That garage is awesome! No reason to feel embarrassed about feeling odd in the weather, but check your glucose to see why you are feeling that way. I hope you haven't put them back on the roof yet because I have some cool white with a white wire Christmas lights that would look very pretty on those eyebrow deals. Nice video, again.
We haven't put them back on the roof yet - but we are going to soon! Unfortunately, there's no power up there for lights. Something to think about when we are getting the electrical done.
I hope you have a great week. I worry about you, and that day was super hot. I couldn't work in it. That's so important for you to realize you can do anything regardless of the age you are, and the weather. But you've got to start the day off with bacon and eggs. Bacon has been given a bad rap. But bacon has all the B- vitamins. You especially need B-1 (Thiamine) for energy, and it's very, very important. Just drain the bacon really well to get rid of the grease. If there was a restaurant that offered shrimp, eggs, and bacon, I would be a good customer! Because those are the vitamins and minerals you need at the start of the day. I eat a boatload of bacon. And carbonated sugar-free beverages are also good for your gut health. Man, I hope you make it through this high-heat situation, and really prosper. You are remarkable. There is nothing you can't do, just take care of yourself.
You know… some YT channels have SPF shirts as merch. 😉 I might have a couple of them, and they may be my favorite things for yardwork during the summer. Also- a thought- you might stencil “No step” on the tops of those… in English and in Spanish.
I'll tell you one thing, when the roofers put these back up they are going to get a long lecture from me about not walking on them. I like the idea of stenciling them for the future. We've only done that first batch of tee shirts, but we are starting to explore other merchandise, so I'll check into the SPF shirts. There are places that drop ship to order. We don't make nearly as much profit on those, but the product choice is so broad, and people get to pick something they really like so there's benefit in not having to carry inventory. I'll assign Jo to the task of checking it out. She's good at that kind of thing.
Those arches are looking very nice. It was kind of those welders to repair for free. When you were removing all the old paint, was there any other paint colour on them, or were they always painted white?
We are always so touched when we hire someone and then they fall in love with the house and won't let us pay them. From what we saw, these were always white. Because the house was so unkept, there aren't that many layers of paint to deal with.
Not that I want to be a painter or a shadetree carpenter again, but I would use 220 grit sandpaper on the metal. I've used chemicals before and find them destructive. That 220 grit sandpaper took the rust right off my kitchen sink drain and did not leave a mark.
How about a wire wheel on an angle grinder, to remove that paint? It would be a lot faster than the hand tools. And I think the wire wheel would be gentle enough to not damage the metal. (Edit: After getting further in the video and assuming this was weeks ago, I'm guessing it's too late for this suggestion. 😀 )
I saw a very good RUclips similar to your channel named: "Moving this Renovation Along? Wiring, Plumbing, and HVAC OH" by Our Restoration Nation. Have you seen it ? Anyways, it might breathe a little inspiration into you, your crew, and volunteers. They completely gutted this gorgeous home. Now they are running wire, plumbing, and etc. Just like you, they are scraping, sanding, and using chemical strippers. I don't know what limitations you are bound by with regards to the floors. And I know you have focused largely on structural issues for a long time. But I think it's time to let go of the mauve tile in the bathroom. It reminds me of the tile laid at the Buccaneer Hotel. Maybe it's time to let your plumber do the Kona thang!! I'd really like to meet Heather. As soon as you get those electrical and plumbing done, you'll be ready to finish those walls. Maybe I can help with painting, and repairs.
I have not seen that one - I will have to check it out. I love that show. Since we are doing a historic restoration we can't change anything so all the floors will have to stay. There's going to be lots of painting in this house when the time comes!.🙂
For "electrolytes" Gatorade has way too much sodium and sugar; we worry about that. We drink Celsius because it has the B vitamins. And watch that premiere protein, it's whey, and bad for you. Eat 3 eggs a day.
Dont you have a location were contractors get materials at a lower price, and cant you get a bussiness account to shop there and get some of the TAX back. I would think being a charity you should be able to avoid retail prices. We have Screwfix and Makro (UK) that sell to the trade only.
Some places offer a contractor discount and as a nonprofit, we don't pay sales tax which is 8.25 %. That alone is a big help. We also get some things donated. Sherwin Williams, a paint company here, sold us two gallons of $60 primer for only $15 each. Everything helps.
Im sorry your vents didnt turn out better. Must be very disappointing. Its all in the prep work. Two days of prep and bang out the metal and youre good to go. Maybe a different paint system. Most guys would have sprayed the sheet metal. Maybe try a one stop shop next time. Should have them back in a week, and that way you wouldnt have to spend a months worth of effort and tie up your resources. I hope you used body filler before painting. That way the paint wont come off at the creases in years to come. Anyway Im sure you just be exhausted and like all things, if you stand far enough away the better they look.
We are pretty happy with how they turned out. If we had unlimited funds of course we could have done more with them but they should be well protected and the next time the roof gets replaced maybe there will be more money to fix them a little better. We can't spend what we don't have.

They do look so much better.😊
You ladies are AWESOME 😊😊

I live in Southern California, so I am amazed at how much work you got done in that heat - you are amazing. But the cicada lesson was priceless!
It was a rough day. I don't think I'd do it again. Heather was so funny about the cicadas. I edited out half of the conversation!!! SO satisfying to see those things painted! Great job!
Yes, it really is! They look so much better and should be strong enough to withstand many more years.
I so enjoy seeing the progress. In the future I’ll make a trip to Galveston to see the final results personally! Thanks for this lovely work you all are doing restoring this magnificent historical home.
Thanks for watching and supporting this house. We would love to be able to give you a personal tour! Hope to see you in Galveston soon.
Fascinating ... but the physical toll must be enormous. I'm in awe of you determination. Please take care...time is infinite, health isn't👍
It was not a good day to be working and normally we would not push ourselves in that kind of heat but we really needed to get these done. The shade is the only thing that saved us.
Holy cats! That was A LOT of work! But it will pay off! Good on you!
I won't lie, it's been awful. The heat didn't help but we need to get these finished and couldn't afford to wait around for cooler weather.
I’m late to this series. So fun to see the transformation! I guess the first thing you did was to test for lead.
Welcome, glad you found us. We never test anything for lead. With a house this old, you can just assume lead is always present.
Bless your heart. I commend you for your hard, hard work.
I appreciate it. It's not always fun but it helps to work with great people.

You and Heather are so tough!
Either tough or stubborn. Either way, we were determined to get this project done.

You are inspiring. Thank you for the updates.
It's so nice to know that these updates are appreciated. We love doing g the work (most of the time) but this project has been a bear.

POR15, good stuff!! 😊👍
It sure was a stinky process but they came out really good.

Heather is both talented and a workhorse.

I didn't think of that. It may be too late for this project but there will certainly be more where that could be a big help.

What a process to get them looking good and back up. Even in the shade heat is draining. Have a great week.🤗❤️🤍💙
It wasn't the worst day we've had, but it was close. Thank goodness for the shade. I am so over working on these things

The eyebrows are really coming along
They have been so much work. It will be a great relief when they go back up and we can get on to something else.
