      Jin: Saves hundreds of lives by acting as a warrior, spy, diplomat or assassin as the situation demands.
      Shimura: Sends hundreds to their deaths as true samurai, just like the Mongols know they will, thus sending them to die for nothing.

      Jin is actually the most historically accurate samurai. He has honor, sure but the goal is always the number one priority. A samurai will kill you any way he can. When I was given the choice: I chose to spare Shimura. Because he was bound by tradition and unchanging in his ways which was a rationale that would've cost more lives in the fight against the Mongols. Granting his request would just be reaffirming such a belief, which Jin is technically rejecting by still choosing to be the Ghost.(Honor died on the beach)
    But you can also look at both endings in another way: Choosing to Spare is basically the Hollywood Movie Ending. You get told that you'll reject that choice and never know peace, but you proudly put your mask back on and walk off into the sunset: leaving the past, and last connection to it(Shimura), behind and walking into future. And yet, your choosing to be who are you, fully aware of the consequences, yet still embracing your ideals.
    Honoring Shimura's last wish is probably the most Akira Kurosawaesque choice though, especially considering the closeness and bond both Jin and Lord Shimura had. Even when Lord Shimura was technically against Jin at the end, he was still considered family.(In the next life, find me.) Their relationship as Mentor and Disciple was key and it helped Jin grow into the warrior he is, despite the means he took to beat the Mongols. It probably also reflects the Mono no Aware concept the most, even if the entire game felt like that once the journey is all over.
    In the end, neither choice is good or bad. And the game allows you to pick what you believe in.

    1. Find Umugi Cove, talk to Goro, & get his map.
    2. Head north to Omi Village & collect the Sakai armor & your blowgun.
    3. Find Lord Shimura at his hunting camp while wearing the Sakai armor. He will commend you for it before you proceed with delivering Goro’s message.
    4. Complete Yuna’s character tales.
    5. Head to the Yarikawa survivor camp & ride to the stronghold with Yuna & Taka. You will mention the events of Omi & Otsuna along the way.

    If there is a sequel, I think they should follow the Spare Ending. It should also take place during the Second Mongol Invasion Of Japan. Lord Shimura's character could takes from cues from Inspector Javert from Les Misérables in that he ultimately finds himself questioning the "honorable" ways he's followed all his life. Over the course of the story, Shimura sees just how corrupt many of the other Samurai are when they often disregard their own traditional values for personal gain, and slowly, but surely, he begins to wonder if maybe Jin was right, that he IS nothing but a slave to "honor". In the end, Shimura is forced into a moral dilemma similar to Inspector Javert in Les Misérables that compromises his moral standing. Either he can do the "honorable", but morally wrong thing, or the "dishonorable", but truly right thing. In the end, Shimura, like Inspector Javert, chooses to kill himself in order to both do the right thing, AND keep his honor.

    love the video keep up the great work. the thing that I love about the endings were that if you kill Shimura, in a way you still believe in the Bushido code and honor. "the Ghost" was a necessary "evil" in order to save Tsushima. you don't HAVE to kill Shimura, you don't HAVE to listen to the code or the Shogun but you did. YOU killed your uncle cause you believe in the a "warrior death" in the whole honor code. But if you spare him your essentially saying honor, shogun, the samurai code holds no value to YOUR own code. (which in Jin case was to save people.) and if that mean that they will brand you a traitor, a man with no honor, the Ghost. then screw it you are The Ghost, hence Jin putting on the ghost mask and walking away from his uncle, metaphorically walking away from tradition, or at least bending it. A really cool detail about the ending is if you go to either kill or spare the camera shows the characters whole, like KILL shows only Shimura and SPARE shows only Jin, it is like the game trying to say are you a Samurai or are you The Ghost?

    Kotun Khan was right about. He knew the only way for the Samurai to win was to abandoned their code and honor. Conversely, the Khan studying of the Samurai code meant they would happily die before committing dishonorable conduct making Kotun the perfect foil. Jin, although being the anomaly, abandoning his honor really didn't shake Kotun because he knew the Shogun would never let Jin live regardless of how many Mongols he kill. Every success Jin has is a stark failure of the Shogun thus making Jin a threat not only to the Shogun but to Samurai culture as well. Komodo Beach was proof of the failures of Samurai code and culture and if the Shogun were to save face and retain power Jin had to be labeled persona non grata. Of course this could've been avoided had Shimura ordered the Ghost to be a secret and an urban legend.

The Japanese copied the design, with help from a Portuguese gunsmith. If you want to do your own research where samurai used Tanegashima, then look up the battles of Anegawa and Nagashino. They also used them in the 1592 invasion of Korea with great effect in early points in the war, taking Seoul in 18 days with a quarter of their army being gunners. It wasn't until the Edo period which came with almost 250 years of peace, did guns become used less and the sword became the desired weapon to deal with small scale combat, but guns were still used by everyone, from samurai hunting and target practice, to peasant farmers to protect their property.

      Ok after some research I found that the high occurrence of stormy weather was intended for the third act onward as it represents Jin's transformation into the ghost regardless of the ending you pick. People are starting to get a little annoyed by it since it can get old fast. I like the stormy weather effect to a degree but it doesn't hurt to change it up especially when sunny weather brings out the most color.
      Felt kinda pointless to have a different scene by ending with different weather if it keeps getting stormy regardless. Why have a sunny weather ending when you fully embrace the ghost but have that canonical weather when you do the "bad" ending? Seems off to me. I figured they would make it more sunny on one ending and the stormy effect on the other. Hopefully this is reworked in the next patch which should DEFINITELY include new game plus.
      I wonder if Sucker Punch could improve the functionality of the flute where when you change to a certain weather setting it stays that way until you change it later. That would be perfect for immersion setups that aren't interrupted by scripted environment changes.

      killing Shimura makes sense, the Shogun damands a head Jin or Shimura, Shimura really doesn't want to kill Jin as if you kill him he treats Jin as his son officially and tells him to find him in their nxt life, meaning thats the choice he wants and is ready to accept it. if you leave him means he fails and the Shogun will discharged him as a samurai, strip him of his land and titles and either be killed publicly or seppuku, him dying by jins hands means he didnt kill his adapted son and his legacy is preserved and the Shogun will most likely give him a heroic death, Jin is considered a traitor both ways, so..

    • @stanjon7
      @stanjon7 3 года назад +15

      But we have no proof whatsoever that the Shogun will order him to kill himself. Yes it was a thing but it’s not like samurai were ordered to do it all the time. Remember these are highly trained warriors that you can’t just replace. I personally think killing him is probably the more emotional ending though. Also I think one of the actors said the surviving ending was cannon but I could be wrong on that. Japan in real life however was aware the Mongols would be coming back. Either way I expect them to just cut him out of any sequel, problem solved lol

    This is a nice video although at the start "Bushido" was mentioned and I do have a problem with that, in the video and actual game, because during the existence of the samurai there was no such thing as "Bushido". there were a set of values that samurai followed and some are what we associate Bushido but the values were general ideas on how a samurai should live and behave and they sometimes varied from each region. "Bushido" only came about at the start of the 1900s when a Japanese man wrote a book about "Bushido". The book was not well received in Japan but was a hit in other countries like the USA. But this video is really good at telling the story of the game.

I position him facing the sea with and the sun setting in the backyard. Maybe I’ll take a screenshot as it was a beautiful imagery.

    I like how the game gave you the decision, but in my opinion the spare ending is the one that makes sense from a narrative POV. Jin's whole arc is about him sacrificing his status and honor in order to save the people he loves and his home. He defies his uncle in order to save him, and that would have nicely culminated in him not giving his uncle an "honorable" death and letting him live. Jin did not want to kill his uncle, and his whole arc is about him developing his own code and moral compass.

    The video game was awesome through-and-through one of the best I've seen and played thus far, (next to red dead redemption 2) keep up the good work sucker punch; As far as the character of jin sakai goes I do not consider him a hypocrite at all, He continued to show himself to be the most honorable, more so than his uncle due to the fact that he valued innocent lives more than the need to appease the rigid dogma of the bushido code for the sake of his uncle and the shogun, they were facing an enemy that was using their code against them to take over the land and the people and jin saw no other choice but to break away from that in order for his people and his country to survive the murderous onslaught of the mongols, Thus it forced him down a path that he was Initially resistant to but ultimately embraced for the good of everyone Which in turn has made him a beloved living legend among his people as well as tsushima's very own japanese zorro, He may have sacrificed and lost everything because of the harsh choices he was forced to make, but he also gained a whole lot more from his willingness to sacrifice and lose everything for the greater good of all and he for a video game character has my utmost respect for that.
    He uncle however is the villain of his own story because he was willing to sacrifice an innocent woman like jin's friend yuna to the shogun and blame the poisoning of the mongols on her; something a man of honor should never do, so I personally don't care about lord shimura's pain, he deserves it and what better way for him to suffer more than to be spared and live with the humiliation of having his own nephew and "son" go on to become a better person and greater legend than him, the shogun and the entire class of the samurai. LONG LIVE THE GHOST!!! 🔥💯😉😁👍

  • @kittykitkat76
    @kittykitkat76 6 месяцев назад

    I really do like this story, but when it comes to the ending, I would personally choose the kill option for a few reasons.
    1. Sparing him from the Shogun. The point made in this video was that the Shogun punished Lord Shimura to kill his own nephew. This basically states that the Shogun doesn't give a shit about the fact that Jin is his own nephew and they're only concerned about reputation and status, which is extremely corrupt. What Jin said to Lord Shimura before he goes off to poison the Mongols, that he brought them hope and Lord Shimura did nothing, this is true to an extent. Jin sacrificed his principles for the sake of his people, he turned against his bushido code for the sake of his people. That is more honorable than anything, and in times of war, people get desperate. In times of war, sometimes you have to do things you aren't proud of, but the fact that Jin was willing to go however far he had to for the sake of his people is extremely admirable, and thus honorable.
    2. The concept of honor. Honor in Ghost of Tsushima, and what it was categorized in Bushido, defined that it would respect and hold true to one's familial representation and hold true to the virtues of one's moral integrity and family legacy. This was the driving force behind many samurai back in Feudal Japan, I may sound like I am some kind of history expert but I am not. I'm just going off of what the game has stated and my own knowledge of the subject. Anyway, people during this time were deeply focused on holding their family's name in good graces, holding it in respect and to be admired. A part of this ideology is something that people would be inspired to work towards. To have a good reputation and to be respected is something that many people want. On the other hand, this ideology about preserving the image of your family, along with your reputation is very toxic. The idea that you would have to kill people just because they said something bad about your family is really fucked up. Even worse if one of your own family members decides to ruin your family's reputation. Honor in its base form is to show respect and admiration towards someone. The way that samurai used this was to their ancestors. But honor can be whatever the person wants it to be. The Shogun don't accept this view and they want to keep things as the way their vision and their vision alone.

    • @kittykitkat76
      @kittykitkat76 6 месяцев назад

      That's basically all I would need to say about my view of the endings. Jin showing that he has honor isn't a bad thing. Honor can be whatever the person makes it out to be, and additionally, though it isn't the best option, killing Shimura technically spares him from the Shogun. Not exactly embarrassment, but helping his uncle not have to face the Shogun alone. Lastly, this act lets Shimura accept Jin as his son again, so there is still that compassion within the next life. But this is my view on things, and if you have critiques than I am more than happy to hear them. Take care and have a good day.
