Thanks for mentioning Side By Side. I played it years ago when messing with PSX emulation on the Windows Phone but unfortunately forgot about it after I got rid of that thing. Now that you've put the game back on my map I've been having a blast with it again through RetroArch.
Nice video man! I hoped to see at least one “burnout” game in the list (maybe burnout 2) but great list anyway .. I played all te games you listed (even the honorable mentions) it means we are on the same wave .. :)
Burnout 2 was the best one. They became more about the crashing after that one but the balance and difficulty of the racing in B2 was exceptionally good.
Pretty solid list even though I'll swap Virtua Racing and Sega Rally 2 (specially DC port) with Daytona and Sega Rally. This last two are just timeless classic I play till this day no jokes. Daytona USA is the game I play with my non-gamer friends when they come to my house and they have a blast. Truly a mark of a classic after almost 30 years later. Want to try those Tecmo racing games that looks crazy for PSX standard, same thing with those Rally Africa/Europe/games. Keep up the good work!
I always thought Hydro thunder was the coolest arcade racer based solely on how cool the cabinet was. Using a boat throttle lever with the boost button on the handle was just so legit. The courses were really fun as well. Lots of interesting locations and flashy visuals
Really good video here. Lots of details but didn't stay too long. Kudos to you! Small thing, slipstreaming started in RRV! And my own personal view, the US Auto Modelista is sooo much better though few agree.
I definitely enjoy Ridge Racer 2 since things get pretty challenging at the end of the game like Max Tour And it's also just fun to see Pac Man race around in a spaceship
On the subject of endgame cars, I also appreciate that Ridge Racer 2 got rid of the cock rocket version of the Angelus from the original PSP release and replaced it with the old-school Ridge Racer design.
nice top ten, plenty I haven't played but will look into! Also, Sega Rally 2 on dreamcast had a 60fps mode (had to input a code), which decreased graphical fidelity for more frames
My favourite will always be Scud Race. I love the handling model. My 2nd favourite is Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. It has all the friendly handling of Outrun 2 but extends things nicely with all the boost mechanics. So much to do as well. I've not tried Ridge Racer 2 unfortunately but I dabbled with RR7 when I borrowed a PS3 and I wouldn't mind spending a little more time on that at some point because it was pleasingly smooth. There are so few new arcade racers these days that you really do have to go back get your fix. Even the stuff in the actual arcade is mostly completely duff. It's all Raw Thrills (zero depth) or something Sega have outsourced to 3rd rate budget developers who don't know what they're doing.
Love me some SCUD Race. I have to give a shout out to Formula Retro Racing: World Tour. Repixel8 is doing a great job with that series and it deserves more attention. Gives me a lot of hope for the future of the genre.
@@ShapeyFiend Honestly, this has been one of the most rewarding parts of building this channel, getting the chance to introduce people to games they might not have known about otherwise. I hope you like it!
Ridge Racer V / 5 was for a long time a king of arcade racers for me. The feel of the heavy machines drifting at high speed was nearly touch-able for me =) Had to turn off the announcer though. Can´t believe the original RRV CD still works, more than 20 years later.
I'm sure some people missed the VN aspects of R4, but the return to Ridge City combined with this very specific style of presentation made V such an icon of the PS2 launch that it's hard to put into words.
Interesting seeing Ridge Racer 2 come in at number 1 considering I just started playing it this week (on actual PSP hardware). Its certainly the most content rich Ridge Racer game and a blast to play. I don't know if I could put it above R4, that game just had a certain aesthetic and vibe that made it very memorable. Every Ridge Racer game since R4 has felt a bit soulless in my opinion.
You can have your narrow definition of arcade racers but putting Initial D under Auto Modelista is a straight up wrong opinion. I will die on this hill and you cannot convince me otherwise. Auto Modelista is just too easy and doesn't have enough content or tracks. Perhaps I might look upon it more kindly if it had an actual arcade release (which it didn't and definitely should have) Also Hydro Thunder and SF Rush 2049 and Crusin aren't here either. Where are they? I'll give you points for putting Ridge Racer 6 and 7 on here and even remembering Battle Gear exists though. A lot of older gamers tend to discount the RR PSP engine for making Ridge Racer too easy but I disagree. That engine is so good I'll play Vita despite its lack of content (helps that the tracks are stellar too despite there only being 9 of them)
Sega Rally 3/Online Arcade needs more love, but Revo mangled it pretty badly. It's legit like an Auto Modellista JP/international comparison. (PSP version notwithstanding. That was pretty solid.)
Only if they aren't understanding the context. I'm not denigrating the series in any way, just putting it in a different box. Action racers and arcade racers are two very different things.
I've recently played Flag 2 Flag (Well, the JP version) and I adore it because I am a gigantic Indycar fan. But dang is it easy....I can lap the field every race lol Also, whats wrong about an oval in a game about drifting? Half of the oval racing in the USA is basically strictly drifting! lol. That said I have no idea what the oval in the game looks like. My 10 would be something like (in no order) San Fransisco Rush Indy 500 / Daytona USA Hard Drivin' (Arcade) Power Drift Sega Super GT Coast 2 Coast Then IDK if they would count but like I think of the Trackmania games as arcade racers and I had 2 that I really enjoyed Trackmania Sunrise Trackmania Nations Then I'd throw some top down stuff like Danny Sullivan's Indy Heat and RC de GO! And if Flag 2 Flag counts, then like CART World Series or IndyCar Series as well. Now I'm just rambling about games I like lol
Classifying Trackmania is hard for me. I almost feel like it's its own category. The problem with an oval in a Ridge Racer game, particularly this Ridge Racer game, is that opportunities to drift and build up nitrous are extremely rare without giving up ground to the AI cars that are going flat out the whole way around the track, and without a drafting mechanic, you can't even properly apply oval racing tactics to compensate.
Im missing diversity in this list due to its bias towards Japanese Arcade racers which a great in their own right but following the blueprint established by outrun. Im missing influential western titles like Burnout 3,Trackmania, midtown madness, metropolis street racer/ project gotham racing?
@germanskill205 Close. The big thing with me is that I hate the current state of arcade racing games because a lot of the industry has this binary mindset of "anything that is not a simulation is arcade (and therefore arcade racing is doing fine)," when in fact there's a pretty massive list of racing genres like action racing (NFS, Burnout, etc), hybrid racing (PGR, DiRT, Grid...), combat racing (Wipeout, Blur, all the kart racers...), and so on. There's even an RPG-like Japanese/Western split in terms of arcade racers, although it's very lopsided. I did an entire video about that, and even linked it in the start of the video, but maybe the card didn't show up for everybody. ruclips.net/video/GYbe3xWLOw4/видео.html This will give you a much better insight into where the selections came from. This matters to me a lot because actual arcade racing isn't in a great place right now, and hopefully spreading a more detailed awareness of the genre landscape will bring more attention to that fact. Thanks for watching!
