What did you think of Ridge Racer Type 4? Do you think it's the best in the series? Let me know what you think in the comments and have a great day! ♥️
not just the best in the series, but one of the best racing *games* of all time. it understood what it was, and it executed it with a sense of style and panache that has simply never been matched since.
Ridge Racer need to come back in the future... This serie sadly got push into oblivion because of the unbounded title which pratically destroy the good reputation of RR and tainted the rest thoses games that after it (the vita one and two mobile vile game). Sure we got great racing simulators like forzas, GTies, Assetos and so on... But a grand arcady racing games like RR are pratically non existent (except some indie titles...)
I am beyond happy to see someone come back to R4 and appreciate it as much as I do, in fact my real world project car is heavily inspired by R4, with decals of all the tracks on the side in the order of the RRR '99 GP and a RRR decal in the back windows. I can't wait to finish it and start actually tracking it!
It's a darn good game, quite nothing like it. But I have to be honest, I actually prefer Ridge Racer V over R4. I find the handling to be much more accessible yet equally challenging, and I also really prefer the more Y2K futurism artstyle of V over the more jazzy aesthetic in 4 (but that's just my aesthetic prefernce). Then again, it may also be a bit biased because I've been playing V since I first got my PS2 a few years ago, and it also introduced me to my favorite music group of all time (Boom Boom Satellites)!
one small detail i love about R4 is that every race is paced so that the climax of the songs sync with the 3rd lap, and it feels like a playable album with the amount of love put into the ost
Yup and in many cases the song also alings with the last stretch of the race and there's either an amazing crescendo (Move me) or a soothing ending to the song (Naked Glow). In my opinion, this is the best OST ever made.
R4 and Gran Turismo are the two games that influenced me the most as a kid, there is literally nothing like it. I wished more racing games had this kind of Style in a complete package, UI, Gameplay, Story and the entire presentation is just top notch
Not to mention amazing story. Like you got four separate story lines that all react to how well you do. We can't even get RPG's that do that these days.
It's very recommended not to change the music in the story mode, they syncs with every moment you have My favorite moment has to be the final race with DRT (first place finish in every race) . On the last lap, entering the last corner with one last car to overtake and the car from the last place getting your way, as you're about to make a move, the song's climax hit it just right it puts you to the "do or die" Situation
this game is literally masterpiece, this and Gran turismo 2 were the reason why both games were the absolute ahead of its time. always be in my heart too
Played this game recently for the first time and man does it hold up, I genuinely did not expect it to slap as hard as it did. I didn't expect multiple story modes either. What I did expect was the music and man it's just supreme! This game is gets emotions out of me like not many racing games do, it just makes me feel so happy.
no joke, I played it for the first time like 2 years ago not expecting much right before bed only to find myself staying awake for hours in a state of pure euphoria, perfectly in the zone, complete bliss of relaxation and adrenaline at the same time as impossible as it sounds
The OST is my favorite video game OST, period. The blend of acid jazz and drum n' bass genre created something so heavenly, that never been replicated with other games (or other artists for that matter). Combined that with late 90s near-futurism of Japan, this game never aged as far as I concern.
I've never been that into racing games. Something about the pursuit of perfection is off-putting to my sloth brain. But R4 has such a vibe to it that it cuts through all that and gets its hooks into me. I didn't play it until about two months ago, but WOW does it hold up.
This game has a vibe that's simply unrivaled to this day in any racing game. No other racing game scratches the same itch for me as this game does, Ridge Racer V is the only one that comes sorta close, and it's still a long shot. I really wish Namco would give it another shot at making a Stylish, almost musical racing game like this again. Oh, and speaking of music, this whole game's OST lives rent free in my head since 1998. I highly recommend driving late at night listening to "Your Vibe", it's quite an experience.
NFS High Stakes and Hot Pursuit, GT and GT2. Even after playing this 4 a LOT, they don't get close to how many hours I spend in RRT4, unlocking everything from zero again and again, trying to catch up to my father, who practically could speed-run this thing back in 2003.
the first time i played R4 i was blown away at how amazing it is for a 90s racing game. that shit absolutely RIPS and if youve never tried it you totally should!
RR7 was the first game I got 100% completion on simply because the cars were cool, tracks were genius from a racing and environment PoV, and the soundtrack is a godsent. I gotta say, This franchise was and still is an underrated gem right next to F-Zero.
Your stream was my first introduction to Ridge Racer 4, apart from that the only RR game I did play was a java one lol. What really surprised me overall was the story, you have 4 paths to take and all of them are intertwined in some way. The characters in these stories were pretty likeable and memorable overall, mainly Roberts story in my opinion. They just stand out for me and getting to see them for the first time during that stream made me quite happy to see some fleshed out characters with actual personality for once. Another great video Dove, props to you and your editors for making awesome content like this
R4 was/is such a...vibe. Really. Beautifully themed/scored game. STILL feels fresh to this day. What a soundtrack as well. I remember getting this game on release (still have that copy), and it was SO eye dropping at the time. GT2 was pretty, but this was on another level. IMO, Ridge Racer in general peaked here with R4.
remember. this game not only amazing visually, but also punishing extreme. one crash, speed reduced and results in difficult on getting first place. i ve learnd this the hardway
I could kinda barely believe it when I started getting way into a JP music label's artist (Diverse System) and there I find Hiroshi Okubo, one of the lead musicians on this very game, still making music for them.
Man that menu music hitting that nostalgia vibe HARD. I remember getting my PS1 as a kid and binning hours as a 5-6 year old on Ridge Racer one. I never did beat that Devil car. Would always get me on that last chicane
little known part: Polyphony Digital hired part of the UI/UX designers from RRT4, so its very possible it influenced the UI/UX in GT3 and onwards this means Kaz 100% played it and loved the art style, and it's one of those things someone like me would love to ask him about
This game is a true culmination for the year 2000! I even remembered going in a mall with their TIME ATTACK challenge using this game it was such a memorable time!
I have been a lifelong Namco fan from shmups to racers to fighting games, from arcades to consoles. A lot of people who only really grew up in the Playstation/Gran Turismo era won't know, but their rivalry with Sega to be the king of arcades was legendary.
Another franchise I have to experience for myself, got to say. That's a lot of cars to unlock, let alone mastering them all. Sounds like quite a challenge!
I imagine the reason why this game has maybe a bit too many cars to grind is because it was compatible with Sony's Pocketstation, a peripheral similar to the Dreamcast's VMU that never made it outside Japan due to poor sales. Getting every single car in the game makes a bit more sense when the idea is you're supposed to team up with friends to do so, though your mileage may vary whether or not it's still good game design. Also apparently this was one of 5 games compatible with Namco's Jogcon controller, a "racing wheel" that was essentially 3-inch dial attached to a PS controller that was apparently Playstation's first controller with force feedback. I've only played this game for the first time recently, and I'll have to admit it took a few tries for it to click with me. But once you get the hang of the handling, this is still a really fun game today with excellent presentation and a soundtrack I'm still listening to quite often.
I've never played a Ridge Racer but it seems thid is the first one I need to try. The Story itself seems to be something I'd definitely enjoy as well so definitely a good motivator.
@@DoVe_7 Racing with them required high skill, especially if you use Lizard which is appropriate with the country of team, and Lizard is drift type, It's probably the hardest combination especially if you wanna nailed perfect finish in every races
RR4 is definitely amazing, they have to comeback with RR8 somehow. Imagine out of the blue, an announcment of a new Ridge Racer game would appear, like they need to somehow revive it. Also about arcade games namco made, there's supposedly a cancelled Xevious remake using a very familliar game engine. Now that i think about it, is Reiko Nagase and Kei Nagase siblings?
Yeah. Would love something like RR4 again. Wouldn't mind even the same way of unlocking vehicles. Just expand it a bit and we are good to go. And iirc, the Nagase thing was more of a reference.
*Enki Gilbert* bros unite! Also I always thought the teams were based on semi-real-life racing orgs: - MMM is Renault/Alpine - DRT is Ford/Chevrolet - PRC is Honda/Toyota - Solvalou is Ferrari
This is still the best racing game ever made when you look at the consistency of the whole package. Its an example of the difference between games from the 90s and today. Absolutely no bloat, no BS, just a 100% polished, perfect experience from start to finish. They literally just don't make them like this anymore.
💥💥 I remember playing this back as a teen in the late 90s on my ps1. I distinctly remembered his rocket car that went like 1000 something mph in this game.
I frigging love the OST! I did own a PS1 back in the day, but sadly I never picked up any of the Ridge Racer games as back then I wasn't into racing games. I do know two of the tracks here made it to Ridge Racer PSP, the only game I invested time into.
I never like daytona racing but every arcade had it. For Ridge racer, i had to go to the local movie theater to play it. Ridge racer disapeared by late 90s but daytona was around tol 05 at dave and buster and other places like that. I havent seen a ridger racer arcade machine in a long time
I bought this game used 8 years ago and had an amazing time! I finished it in one sitting and it felt great! I miss the time when games were not trying to dilute their gameplay in water so that it takes you 100H to finish them...
I was never the biggest Ridge Racer fan (I've only ever played the first game, Rage Racer and Type 4), but Ridge Racer Type 4 is one of my favourite racing games of all time. Everything just hits perfectly and looks great for a PS1 title. I can't believe I found myself actually caring about the team managers as I played it. Kinda wish I could help them all at the same time rather through separate playthroughs, lmao.
Hearing Robert's struggle with the team owner was just sad , you can see how much he cars for you and the team but the owner wanting to sack for ya for a famous driver, and of course Gilbert with losing his son in the final grand prix, everything just felt amazing to witness in this game
I only played 2 (for the psp) from the series but that was great fun was well. If you are unfamiliar with the entry it is bascially a collection game with courses from games up to V and it has several cars too, while having RallyX as a bonus game.
R4 was bad ass! The best in the series. The intro cinematic set the tone! And the music was killer! This game along with Wipeout XL and Gran Turismo 2 were my favorite racers on the original PlayStation.
Loved the sega namco rivalry back in the day, my earliest memories was shinobi and rolling thunder, fast forward to the 90s we got virtua racing, next came ridge racer then daytona ripped the competition. Rave racer and sega rally came along soon after......
My earliest ever racing game besides GT1, 2 and NFS2. 20th anniversary remixes of the soundtrack were pretty great too. (Its the version i used for the TDU2 vid)
I think the only racing games that had such notable style with their substance, besides RR4, were Rollcage (what a soundtrack), Motorhead (very slick), and Wip3out (which was both, and more). The PS1 had a great vibe for racing games. Not sure why it isn't there any more (except for maybe WipEout Omega Collection?). Maybe it's because everybody is sold on brand recognition and DLC, so we never get complete or unique games any more.
Before this game, the only Ridge Racer game I've played was Unbounded, I didn't like it as much and wasn't that much interested in the rest of the franchise. Then I got a PlayStation Classic (R.I.P.), where the only racing game included and preinstalled in the console itself was Ridge Racer Type 4. When I played it for the first time, I also didn't like it as much, especially because of the PS Classic controller, but I didn't lose interest in the game and experiencing it properly. So I got it for my actual PS1 (twice, because the Platinum version I got before didn't have the Ridge Racer Hi-Spec Demo), and I absolutely loved it there. The soundtrack, the speed, the graphics...👌 And it got me into the franchise as a whole, along with the Ridge Racer 2 game I've emulated on PPSSPP. Such a shame Namco doesn't make any more Ridge Racer games.
I love the Ridge Racer series. Play them still to this day. Not Rage Racer tho, since its missing the RR vibe. Just like Unbound but, atleast that one is a little fun for what it is.
Type 4 was groundbreaking for the original PlayStation. They utilized every ounce of the power from the aging hardware and the result an eye candy amazing game that ran on steady 30 FPS and was light years ahead than it’s not so old predecessors
R4 is goated 💪 its my all time favorite racing game. Right from the very opening you are treated to that sweet cgi opener with that sweet ridge racer song. Even today I still think the game looks amazing and its still the best playing in the series, although I will say the PSP ridge racer is very close in gameplay. I bought the limited edition R4 back when it came out for the controller and the jogcon force feedback really changed up the game making it a true masterpiece. Plus the limited edition comes with music CD so you can rip those great tracks to your PC or now a days to your phone.
Ridge Racer 6 & 7 were the highlight of the series for me. I found the earlier titles to be a little underwhelming. But, I can totally understand their appeal and why they are still popular today,
The JogCon was a really weird but interesting peripheral, never owned one because it looked like a single-application controller... and it was ugly as sin. But apparently it was pretty good.

I didn’t know Namco made a game about the Gulag 😏
The soundtrack, the speed, the graphics...👌
And it got me into the franchise as a whole, along with the Ridge Racer 2 game I've emulated on PPSSPP. Such a shame Namco doesn't make any more Ridge Racer games.
I can hear the Ridge Racer announcer screaming at me while I try to bowl.
I love the Ridge Racer series. Play them still to this day. Not Rage Racer tho, since its missing the RR vibe. Just like Unbound but, atleast that one is a little fun for what it is.
R4 is the closest thing to a racing roguelite and always gets a playthrough from me yearly
Type 4 was groundbreaking for the original PlayStation. They utilized every ounce of the power from the aging hardware and the result an eye candy amazing game that ran on steady 30 FPS and was light years ahead than it’s not so old predecessors
peak UI design, along with Gran Turismo and Colin Mcrae Rally
meanwhile several years later at Gran Turismo 5...
I would also love a new Auto Modellista and a new Enthusia Professional Racing.
Do you cover unbound in the future? even if is a cortroversal one i enjoy the game, it remind split second in some aspect
Nah don't really plan on covering that game , just not interested in it
I love the music from this game :). Some of the tracks in Gran Turismo 5 are influenced from this game. Just have a listen and see what I mean.

".......and a French team."
The pacman car tho 😂
And, I try that car yesterday, from different games from same company
You should see the BMW Isetta thing, crazy little car.
I want another SEGA GT. Either a reboot or a sequel to SEGA GT Online.
Ridge Racer 6 & 7 were the highlight of the series for me. I found the earlier titles to be a little underwhelming. But, I can totally understand their appeal and why they are still popular today,
To this day I have still never beat this game with Dig, how anyone can win races with that team consistently I don't know xd
Type 4 such an alpha
*How do I get 320 cars guys? I finished all 4 teams on 2 Memory cards and see nothing guys?* 😶
It depends on your placings in the previous stages , being 3rd or 2nd etc.
The JogCon was a really weird but interesting peripheral, never owned one because it looked like a single-application controller... and it was ugly as sin. But apparently it was pretty good.
R4 is one of the best PS1 titles, period.
I miss Rage Racer :') In my opinion it was the best of the series.
