- In this video I weave the False Satin Damask Pickup I wound the warp for in my previous video. I'll show all the steps you need to follow to weave any "picture" you can graph.
Damask is a satin weave where the pattern is created by shifting from warp-faced satin blocks to weft-faced satin blocks across the surface. The resulting pattern is formed by small squares. Satin requires a minimum of 5 shafts which results in a 4/1 structure. False Satin (as is the case here) is woven as a 3/1 broken twill threaded 1234 and treadled 1324. To get a weft faced weave, the tie-up raises 1 shaft on each treadle. Alternately, to get a warp faced weave, a separate tie-up raises 3 shafts on each treadle. This project uses an additional 2 treadles to raise either shafts 2 & 3 or 1 & 4. In my project, the pickup is done when 1 of those 2 treadles are pressed and the weaving is done using the 3/1 twill tie-up. This effectively makes the pattern appear as a warp faced weave (raising 3 shafts in the patterned area). The pattern as I tied it up uses 10 treadles, but it can be accomplished with 6 treadles by pressing 2 treadles at the same time.
