Grand Seiko’s are absolutely amazing. Picking up my SLGA009 today however what really sets them apart from others is the customer service. Your not the first person to mention how welcoming they are to watch enthusiasts. Great list! I have a Blancpain on my wish list.
That's awesome. A Grand Seiko all-steel diver with spring drive, particularly the SBGA461 is definitely my all time grail watch alongside an Omega I have my eye on. A GS diver for 6K is a good deal for me compared to 11K from the Evolution line....eesh.
Omega Seamaster 300 Heritage, just purchased mine new a couple of weeks ago, Blue dial and very classy looking, can't stop staring at it, it will make you forget about Rolex.
What about Longines’ HydroConquest? 300 m., usually 3 case sizes and a variety of colors and bracelets! And between the $1500 and $2500 range, so you don’t give your credit card a heart attack!
I'm so pleased to hear your story about the Grand Seiko boutique I've wanted to visit for a while and it's great to hear they are so friendly and generous.
Nice story about the GS boutique. And that diver is AMAZING. I bought an SLA047 last year and I think (yeah, as an owner, and the guy who buys something NEVER makes a mistake) the monocoque MM's are far more interesting (better?) than a Sub. I'm happy with my sub homages but I had to buy a real MarineMaster. Your mom is right about the Cartier. Roman numerals on a diver makes me want to wretch. Thanks for the video. Nice job.
Biff, Chad, Palmer and his wife Muffy came to the conclusion that the Submariner is the best dive/dress casual watch ever produced. Everything else is just a pitiful substitute. I don't wear it when I'm collecting the weekly rent money from my low income apts. My $80 Invicta keeps me safe from a mugging. Such savages. Rolex will turn that BlancPain out like a $20 French Ho. That GS like homely giesha with bad breath. I'd need 3 pitchers of beer and horny frauline to wear that German watch. Stick to making cars and bratwurst. Just kidding. I sold my Submariner 30 years ago. You know the one with the sheet metal clasp. Great choices Jory.
Blancpain fifty fathoms 45mm blue dial blows them all out of the ballpark if you got a7’5 inch wrist up in titanium. Sooo comfortable. Had Rolex never go back. They can self implode for all I care. Glashutte a fine watch, way underated
I have a 2000 Rolex Explorer2(black) but since I got the BB58 I rarely wear my Rolex. The Tudor is so beautiful I find myself staring at it instead of reading the time. The size is perfect and super comfortable. As much as I’d want a Sub, I’d probably end up wearing the BB58 more often. Oh, and as of this writing, it’s 1/4th the cost of a pre-owned Sub
I always get great service when I go into the Seiko boutique in the city I live in. Last time I bought a watch there while they were sizing the bracelet they let me try on a SBGY007 (even though I was just buying a seiko 5), absolutely stunning watch!
That Cartier is awesome. I also value my Omega Planet Ocean for more than I would a Submariner. In fact, I traded my Sub for the PO. The Sub had developed problems and wouldn’t run at all. I walked out with the PO and a check for $1,800.00. I had the sub for about 9 months. I have owned the PO for several years and plan on keeping it forever! I never wear a watch to impress anyone but me!
Just my unprofessional opinion but the fact that everyone is creating content about “better alternatives” to the submariner just speaks volumes about the submariner. It will always be the top steel diver that most watch people desire. Love your channel, one of my favorites and always funny and informative.
Wait, what did I see at 5:22? Was that an Invicta-esque engraving on the left side of the case?!?! Did Invicta copy that move from Blancpain, and if they did, why does everybody not have a problem with saying how tacky it looks on the Invicta? It looks tacky even on an expensive classic Blancpain!!!
I want to echo those who have already mentioned the epic (though perhaps underrated?) Omega Planet Ocean. The 39.5mm was my choice. Not only a timeless beauty, it gives one the sense of being indestructible. Takes a backseat to no diver.
@@thomashowardmd247 at almost 9 inches my wrist is not medium unfortunately. the submariner looks silly on me. 45mm is good for a dress watch. for a diver i prefer 48-50mm.
Hey Jory, great list. I liked Federico’s too, and it was cool that you two were on the same page with the Glasshutte, such a gem. Loved the Grand Seiko. In fact that is probably the first Grand Seiko that I could seriously see myself with. It’s very tool-watchy for them, which is a nice departure from their ultra-refined norm.
The story about the GS boutique and JLC should be a lesson for all salesmen. Buying a car once I was choosing between an Audi, Mercedes Benz and a BMW. At Audi and MB they basically scoffed at me when I said how much I wanted to spend as I wasn't exactly wearing my best as I'd just been to work and the clothes were a bit on the dirty side from work. At BMW the salesman sat me down, got me coffee and had a really good chat about what I was looking for. In the end I was so happy with how I was treated at BMW I actually spent a lot more than I had originally planned. One bad salesman's loss is a good salesman's gain. So just like my experience with BMW I'm sure that those guys at Grand Seiko got plenty of sales at JLC's expense.
Disagree with the tuna. It’s Just not as versatile, not as dressy. A more budget friendly option might be the new Aquis. Or the Seamaster. Or the Superocean Heritage. They maintain the sports looks and diver specs, but also look good dressed up or down.
If you're looking for a tool watch diver. Checkout Helm watches. Price point around $300, nh36 movement, 300m water resistance, each watch pressure tested by the owner. If you dive for a living this is the watch for you. Only drawback is you may have to wait 6 months for your order.
I have big wrists 7 5/8" and went for the Glashutte SeaQ Pano on a bracelet. I didn't even consider the current Sub the second I saw in person. Plus I got it from a AD discounted to $10,000 including a GO rubber strap and deployant buckle.
I'll take my Seiko Prospex LX Spring Drive over any that you included in your list. Better fit, finish, materials, and movement than any Oyster Rolex could ever hope to cobble together. Less than half the price of GS. It is a fantastic watch at a stunning value. You should get your hands on one for a review. I called my jewler a bit before Christmas and he had a it ready for pickup in less than a week. Sticker is around 6k, but street is under 5k.
Would recommend any Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. Vastly superior from a technical finishing perspective, as evident from the price differential. Lots of people will say the standard FF is too large and only Rolex keeps value. True but I don’t buy watches as a store of value because there are other things better suited. As for the size, limited edition FFs are smaller and you can sometimes get them below retail new and on secondary market they go above retail if you ban find one.
I do own a Sub but Omega/Tudor probably my second choice, I do keep my eye on GS coz they got some impressive craftsmanship out there. Sadly these days ppl buying Rolex as investment, these buyers have no business with watch-making.
Depends on Sub tool or Sub luxury? if anyone is looking for sub tool, really no need to pass spending 5K. Sinn U50, BALL Engineer Hydrocarbon Original 40mm, ORIS 65 (I like initial re-issue) all are good alternative.
There are so many great alternatives out there from the Tudor Pelagos fxd. JLC polaris, Breguet marine, multiple options from Panerai. People just need to get the whole resale value out of their minds and buy something with the intent of never selling, making resale value irrelevant.
While it does not hold or increase in value as a Rolex does (because of all the hype), I would go for the Glashütte SeaQ, ideally with the big date function and on the steel bracelet with the built in micro-adjustment.
The best dive warch I have is probably the 2021 Omega seamaster 300 "heritage" , it's (in my opinion at least) better than de Professional, you get a better movement with twin barrel, no helium escape valve, no crown guards, domed saphir crystal and the flat links bracelet 🤷🏻♂️ plus the fact you have a 57' design with a modern movement! Very happy with it on my wrist 😁
Jory, as a Quartz fiend, I’m glad to see that you included the Seiko Tuna. However, if I had access to your watch box I’d grab your G-Shock Mudmaster Triple Sensor every time. It fits my lifestyle a helluva lot better than a Rolex of any kind ever could.
I went to Sinn EZM3F about 4 years ago...best move I ever made. It not only keeps better time than any Rolex I've ever had, (I've owned 4 of them), it's got the very cool copper sulfate capsule window, 200 meter depth rating and extremely good lume, all for around $1600.00 when I bought it. I do still have a great fondness for Rolex, but they've priced themselves out of my reach.
I would recommend a 5 digit Sub. I have a 14060M which I found in mint condition with B&P for a reasonable price. Or buy a Tudor BB or Pelagos at a multi brand. It’s a great watch and you will get purchase history so you might actually end up with a Sub.
I bought a DateJust over a year ago (First Rolex) and been on a waiting list for a everyday wear Sub since. I was expecting a year wait. I finally gave in and bought a Breitling superocean 42 for 1/2 the price of a Sub. Yes I know it’s not a sub but it’s still a satisfying and great looking watch and I can close this waiting chapter, retire my everyday G Shock, couple bucks back in my pocket, and move on. Too many great watches available for purchase for me to continue to wait on a made-up list or pay 2x retail.
Very nice vid. I waited for a datejust and it was only five months, but can’t imagine a secondary market with 2x markups. As an impatient guy I was lucky I had folks keeping me calm.
Blancpain Bathyscaphe is missing on this list. It's the Diver that outstyles and outclasses the Sub IMO and you can pick up for around $8000. I saw a Sinn U1 SDR up close a few weeks ago and I was very impressed with it. The Squale Dive Onda-B is a decent budget alternative that looks bling....
The Blancpain Bathyscaphe is likely a better bet (and more accessible). The ZRC 1904 is another great alternative from the French. The RGM 300 from AMERICA is another great alternative.
i like Oceaneva - 1000m - the new ones are 3000m WR. One of brands that I know of that actually strapped their watches to a sub and proved they work in the deep.
No one wants a "better watch" nowadays, in fact no one cares since no one needs a watch now. People want a watch that others recognize and retain value. They wear it to show off social status that's why rolex always top the chart. Watches in 2022 is just another fashion industry.
Unfortunately most of watches mentioned will lose 30-50% of their value instantly while Sub will not. As much as love the GS it has it is two big flaws the bracelet sucks there are no micro adjustments and the watch is huge. I think Tudor FXD is best tool dive watch for the money at $3900 if you do not want to get a Sub.
If I never flip then what does resale matter to me? If I wanted an appreciating asset I'd buy stocks, bonds, or gold. A watch is something you consume slowly over time not an asset you hoard
@@thomasdavis8117 Perhaps an immediate dip after purchase but some brands will quadruple in a few decades. Ugg! I can only imagine what Rolex watches will be selling for then.
My knockoff Sub gets a lot of attention...from hookers and probably muggers, if I'm not careful. I think I paid 50 bucks for it. Kind of glad I don't have a real one.
The Seiko Arnie, with a steel shroud, Strapco bracelet and MarineMaster clasp makes a good SBBN031 twin, for half the price. Though if you want something you can actually take diving without any stress, a Casio Duro is thee thing.
I tried on the Glashutte at an AD in Chicago and it was fantastic. I only wish it had the movement with 100 hour power reserve and display caseback of its bigger brother the, panorama date.
Even at retail, considering the 2022 prices which Rolex raised significantly for their steel sports models, I wouldn’t buy it, not saying about grey market madness. Sub is a good watch, which suppose to cost 5-6k, it isn’t better than Omega SMP300m by any means
Smp300 is an awesome watch for the money. Love the sea q but personally a bit disappointed by the 40hr power reserve. That Cartier is all wrong I'm sorry! Rolex is dead to me!
Sinn: I have a U1000 and 756 Diapal (not a diver), also U1/U2, T1/T2. Doxa, Omega, AP Blancpain Bathy still the best Sub replacement that works with everything. I love my IWC Aquatimer 2000 3536.
i personaly think, in terms of realy capable divers, just made for getting the job done, without any fuzz and bling, the Citzen BN0150 is probably the best divewatch on this planet. like the Seiko Tuna, its 44mm wears a lot smaller, the lume is on par with Seikos lume, its solar powered, therefor runs a long time whitout even open the caseback (therefor no risk for destroying a seel or thread and compromice the water resistance), its highly readable, the bezel is easy to grip and the whole watch is build like a tant.. and the best part is: under $200. its not a beauty, but a beast of a watch!
Thanks, we have different taste, but I appreciate your persspective. If you are a diver, look at the Seiko Monster family. Uses the difference to pay for the trip. Cheers ! Nothing like looking at a watch you took on a cave dive when you are working to remind you of what you could be doing.
Hi Jory, Enjoy your channel very much. Watching you makes me happy. Being a watch appreciator not a collector I have one watch that I really enjoy, the Marathon Large GSAR. It’s built like a tank and looks good too. Thanks for the information and the entertainment. Keep up the good work!
I have the planet ocean blue dial..love it..I also have the green dial Oris Aquis so great too..it’s the best green I’ve seen on a watch. Oh an I bpoght it discounted to $1800 bucks..way less than the German
Breitling Superocean 42. Automatic. 500M water resistance. Amazing lume. Can buy new for $3,500. Bulletproof watch. I own the white dial, blue bezel. Great daily wear.
when looking at the Cartier, i think of the accutron ad: it's not a timepiece, it's a conversation piece. yeah the design is a bit crazed - compared to the tight design margins of most tool watches - but i like it!!
Why wear an awkward dive watch in the first place? Would you join a board meeting in flippers just because it was supposedly trendy 20 years ago and you can afford "the best"? What's wrong wit a JLC Master Control Date, an unobtrusive Oyster Perpetual, a stunning retro Sinn 356 chrono, a minimalist Cartier Tank, a mesmerising Serica 4512, an equally iconic and bold Seiko SRPE51? To me turning bezel divers for everyday wearing are dead.
All handsome watches that I'd be pleased to have on my wrist. For dedicated divers there are some great choices that are easier on the wallet. Squale? Glycine?
At 58 and being a sun roasted Aussie, nice easy listening reviews. I've basically worn out my Diver / Scuba watches over the years. 85 Tag pro 1000, 95 Omega pro200. Zodiac ZO8000 44mm.(My first was the 69 Seiko Hibeat 150m Diver in 77 used, loved it to corroded destruction ) . I've realized it's such a personal choice what someone puts on their wrist, all I can say is to never buy on impulse, think about who you are, and not who you think you are, it may save a lot of hard earned cash. I wear the Seiko SPB 143 & 207LE on steel (sweaty 6 months of the year) these days purely as common sense beaters. Cheers from Australia "down under". Johno :)
I have been treated poorly at boutique stores too. Even when I was wearing a gold Rolex in their store asking about the Patek. They just look at me and decided that they don’t like me and didn’t answer me questions about their stock. The other time was in Vegas Omega store at Wynn hotel. The guy was trying to manipulate me to buy a watch with a patronizing attitude, and I never look at Omega the same way again.
Jory great video. I love my Sea Dweller but the diver I wear most is my Seiko SRP777 on a Strapcode Super-J "Louis" bracelet. The offset crown is perfect it doesn't smash into my wrist like other dive watches I've had.
I just don't get this whole "there are no Submariners out there!" - I found one last weekend at a local MALL...at the ZALES...for $15k. It was a basic model in black/stainless with a date complication...but there it was. Guy hinted he'd probably take $14k for it. What am I missing here?
I think the standard Seiko Marine Master 300 is a better watch than the Rolex Submariner. Actually I own the Seiko SBDC033 Blumo/Sumo and I think that’s a better watch than the Rolex Submariner.
To add to your comments about boutiques treating people crappy, the Tag Heuer boutique in orlando fl. Walked in with one on my wrist and got treated like a homeless person because i wasnt in a suit and tie 🤷♂️
First - Nice Second - Meh Third - NO! Roman Numerals on a Dive Watch! No! Too busy. Fourth - Seiko is a Seiko is a Seiko. Should have given it it's on Brand Name and a Symbol. Fifth - That Seiko is not just another Seiko. The band is worth more than the watch. Very good. IMPRESSED!

I'm happy with my sub homages but I had to buy a real MarineMaster. Your mom is right about the Cartier. Roman numerals on a diver makes me want to wretch. Thanks for the video. Nice job.
Right there with you about Roman numerals, bro.🤮
As a Rolex Collector.
Has to be The Omega Seamaster 300 42m by far it has everything 👌
I would love to see you do a hands on review of a Marathon GSAR
I recommend a black bay 58. I know it's been said a thousand times but fantastic value and luxury feel without the rolex crap
Yep, bad miss from a brand actually designed to replace Rolex for the reasons he is harping on about.
Or the Captain Cook from Rado. Very different perspectives.
I got my BB58. What’s one to do with the other $10g’s?
If you are happy with a subby homage then BB is way to go. It’s high quality for sure.
Muffy stepped on a ping pong ball at the country club. It was ghastly.
Man I love how you added the GS Diver. They seriously need more attention.
Ot's pretty much a .... Seiko.
Just my unprofessional opinion but the fact that everyone is creating content about “better alternatives” to the submariner just speaks volumes about the submariner. It will always be the top steel diver that most watch people desire. Love your channel, one of my favorites and always funny and informative.
So glad you mentioned the Cartier, I love that Cartier and it’s on my wishlist!
I’m jealous!!
Can’t find it on their website is it discontinued?
@@nicpro85 yep, discontinued sadly.
Takes a backseat to no diver.
it's just too tiny. nit everyone has tiny wrists.
@@thomashowardmd247 at almost 9 inches my wrist is not medium unfortunately. the submariner looks silly on me. 45mm is good for a dress watch. for a diver i prefer 48-50mm.
Agree mate. The best diver. I love mine and fine it very classy.
@@louiscyfer6944 I've got an Oris Pro Diver that you would like for the larger wrist.
@@marteanderson7963 what's the size?
I like my Ginault OR2. It a great homage for 1/10th the price of a sub.
Totally agree on the tuna.
Plus I got it from a AD discounted to $10,000 including a GO rubber strap and deployant buckle.
that's big wrists?
I'll take my Seiko Prospex LX Spring Drive over any that you included in your list. Better fit, finish, materials, and movement than any Oyster Rolex could ever hope to cobble together. Less than half the price of GS. It is a fantastic watch at a stunning value. You should get your hands on one for a review. I called my jewler a bit before Christmas and he had a it ready for pickup in less than a week. Sticker is around 6k, but street is under 5k.
LOL Just no
Would recommend any Blancpain Fifty Fathoms.
I’m putting my pennies away for a Pelagos. I’m a big guy, so the size works for me and that blue is just *chefs kiss*
I am selling mine, let me know if you are interested
Glashutte makes badass watches. Nice to see them getting some props.
Great advice. The 14060M is a lovely watch.
Too many great watches available for purchase for me to continue to wait on a made-up list or pay 2x retail.
hello. i'm glad to see you had included a Grand Seiko on your list. would you recommend a High-Beat over a Spring Drive?
Very nice vid. I waited for a datejust and it was only five months, but can’t imagine a secondary market with 2x markups. As an impatient guy I was lucky I had folks keeping me calm.
Blancpain Bathyscaphe is missing on this list. It's the Diver that outstyles and outclasses the Sub IMO and you can pick up for around $8000. I saw a Sinn U1 SDR up close a few weeks ago and I was very impressed with it. The Squale Dive Onda-B is a decent budget alternative that looks bling....
Why do they call it ovaltine? The bottle is round, the cup is round, they should call it roundtine! -This is gold Jerry
The Blancpain Bathyscaphe is likely a better bet (and more accessible). The ZRC 1904 is another great alternative from the French. The RGM 300 from AMERICA is another great alternative.
I would add to the list;
-Ulysse Nardin Diver marine
-titoni seascoper 600
-pequignet royale 300
-Bremont Supermarine
-Raketa Amphibia
these are just cheaper, not better
Jori love your videos. Thank you. Yes I would highly recommend Doxa and Sinn divers are far superior to a Rolex Sub.
i like Oceaneva - 1000m - the new ones are 3000m WR. One of brands that I know of that actually strapped their watches to a sub and proved they work in the deep.
Love the Glashutte!
Ugg! I can only imagine what Rolex watches will be selling for then.
if you buy a watch simply for it future value then this site is not for you.
Casio Duro deserves more love. Just replace the original rubber strap.
@@claudiourrutiaaranguiz9281 I have seen factory bracelets for them on Ebay.
I tried on the Glashutte at an AD in Chicago and it was fantastic. I only wish it had the movement with 100 hour power reserve and display caseback of its bigger brother the, panorama date.
If you have a chance, please review the jaquet droz grand seconde SW.
That Blancpain really hit me hard! What a watch!!
SMP is awesome! :)
Sinn: I have a U1000 and 756 Diapal (not a diver), also U1/U2, T1/T2.
Doxa, Omega, AP
Blancpain Bathy still the best Sub replacement that works with everything.
I love my IWC Aquatimer 2000 3536.
great work mate,I always enjoy your enthusiasm and content.
i personaly think, in terms of realy capable divers, just made for getting the job done, without any fuzz and bling, the Citzen BN0150 is probably the best divewatch on this planet. like the Seiko Tuna, its 44mm wears a lot smaller, the lume is on par with Seikos lume, its solar powered, therefor runs a long time whitout even open the caseback (therefor no risk for destroying a seel or thread and compromice the water resistance), its highly readable, the bezel is easy to grip and the whole watch is build like a tant.. and the best part is: under $200. its not a beauty, but a beast of a watch!
Thanks, we have different taste, but I appreciate your persspective. If you are a diver, look at the Seiko Monster family. Uses the difference to pay for the trip. Cheers ! Nothing like looking at a watch you took on a cave dive when you are working to remind you of what you could be doing.
Hi Jory,
Enjoy your channel very much. Watching you makes me happy. Being a watch appreciator not a collector I have one watch that I really enjoy, the Marathon Large GSAR. It’s built like a tank and looks good too. Thanks for the information and the entertainment. Keep up the good work!
Thanks a lot!.....after watching this video I bought another watch!....the baby tuna frost dial.....great video!
Great line up but I would have also included a Jaeger, Longines or a Jack Turner
Johno :)
My classic Pro Diver is a work horse and looks nice. The NH35a is a proven caliber and found in many watches that sell for $500-800.
What's your opinion on the Tag Heuer Aquaracer GMT?
I have been treated poorly at boutique stores too. Even when I was wearing a gold Rolex in their store asking about the Patek. They just look at me and decided that they don’t like me and didn’t answer me questions about their stock. The other time was in Vegas Omega store at Wynn hotel. The guy was trying to manipulate me to buy a watch with a patronizing attitude, and I never look at Omega the same way again.
That Cartier and Blackpain looks really neat.
I watched this video a month or so ago and was really taken with the Glashutte Original. So now I’m an owner of one-my first luxury watch!
Jory great video. I love my Sea Dweller but the diver I wear most is my Seiko SRP777 on a Strapcode Super-J "Louis" bracelet. The offset crown is perfect it doesn't smash into my wrist like other dive watches I've had.
The Cartier is a Knockout. Black on Silver is da Bomb. My favorite diver next to anything Seiko
Watching this while wearing my Sbdx017 Marinemaster. 😎
Grand seiko boutique in London always pleasant to visit and very helpful. I don't dress up either and always welcoming.
Completely agree about the Cartier! My next watch purchase, absolutely killer af and so underrated! Glad it is!
I just don't get this whole "there are no Submariners out there!" - I found one last weekend at a local MALL...at the ZALES...for $15k. It was a basic model in black/stainless with a date complication...but there it was. Guy hinted he'd probably take $14k for it. What am I missing here?
Marathon GSAR is my go to. Not as fancy as some you listed.. but a solid built watch.
I think the standard Seiko Marine Master 300 is a better watch than the Rolex Submariner. Actually I own the Seiko SBDC033 Blumo/Sumo and I think that’s a better watch than the Rolex Submariner.
Any Ulysse Nardin models? Good video. Thank you.
To add to your comments about boutiques treating people crappy, the Tag Heuer boutique in orlando fl. Walked in with one on my wrist and got treated like a homeless person because i wasnt in a suit and tie 🤷♂️
I kind think that you overlooked a big one. I'm talking about the Tissot Seastar 2000 Professional.
Rolex 2022: What do we do?
Rolex Marketing Team: Put Green face Dial on New Submariner and Increase Prices
Rolex 2022: Brilliant!
First - Nice
Second - Meh
Third - NO! Roman Numerals on a Dive Watch! No! Too busy.
Fourth - Seiko is a Seiko is a Seiko. Should have given it it's on Brand Name and a Symbol.
Fifth - That Seiko is not just another Seiko. The band is worth more than the watch. Very good. IMPRESSED!
Thanks again J,great content as always 👍👍⌚
Love that Glashute🥰
Sinn U1 is a beast !
10:22 this is outrageous, they actually have and sell the watches in that store? Not 8 yr waiting list to sniff the watch?
