Modeling Buildings in Blender- Lazy Tutorials

- So! In the new 2.8 update, the defaults are such that if you extrude faces you might get a weird glitch where some faces are transparent (you'll know it when you see it)- it's a super easy fix, though! Open material properties, go to "Settings" and check "Backface Culling"- that'll fix it right up!
Also! To find "CORRECT UVS"- since folks have been having some trouble- you have to make an edge loop first, and an adaptive menu appears in the lower left of the viewport giving you more options. You might have to click on an arrow to expand it.
Honestly I should have done this one a while ago. I've used it literally a hundred times. The best part is, once you have a building, you can use it over and over in different projects.
If you feel like watching the uncut screen capture, it's here. It's also boring: • Modeling Buildings in ...

when I try following this tutorial and start Extruding faces. the side faces show through the front faces giving me a weird clipping effect. PLZ HALP!
Blarghe- yeah! That's a thing that happens as of the newer versions of blender :/ It's an easy fix though- open the material properties, scroll down to settings, and check, "backface culling". I'm not sure why stuff got changed, but yeah, that extra step is a bit annoying :/
You're so helpful! Thank you! Keep making awesome stuff, dude.
I think it's actually "Show backface" being checked (same place in UI, slightly below Backface Culling) causing the drawing error, it was for me at least ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ took me forever to figure out, was extremely frustrating and a really weird default
@@drunkenmuse AH! I think you're totally right, yeah! I haven't run into the problem nearly as much lately- maybe they've changed the default?? I hope so.
@@IanHubert2 One other thing I've found that worked was switching the blend mode to Opaque and using backface culling. Using just backface culling was still giving me that buggy-see through mess but using opaque blend mode fixed it right up
These videos are changing the community for the better and I love it.
at the beginning I thought this trend was gatekeeping but then thought about it and most of these tutorials require no more than the basic tools offered by most actual beginner tutorials, and these tutorials leave you so much space for creative thinking, ie: Why not use the same technique but with a picture of a calculater?
*charging
@@adham-omran Another one: You can actually mix up this one with the tube and post apocalyptic one to have a high end dystopian building. Seriously, people like him and CGmatter make the kind of tutorials that keep me fueled.
For sure. People only need slow tutorials for a certain number of tutorials. Like maybe 20 tutorials and after that, at some point you have the buttons down, and not you really just want creative new concepts and procedures and tricks that you wouldnt think of on your own. The faster those can be communicated the better.
If you do get stuck on a part, you can always just look up the answer.
@Abdul Mtoro III You are probably pretty new to blender, so this tutorial might not be the best place to start..
I would say that the point of this tutorial is to give you a quick concept of how to do this. You arent supposed to follow along with him. If you are a mid level blender user, you should be able to watch this video all the way through with blender closed, then close the video and open blender and recreate it. If you cant do that yet, then there is thankfully a huge amount of tutorials out there for newer users.
I have a play list with about fifty, and actually I have a private playlist with another 300. Most of them go at a much slower pace which i appreciated at first, but as my experience grows, I dont need to know ever button that is being pressed, I know where the buttons are and i can tweak the values to my liking, so over time a higher percentage of the tutorials are simply wasted time for me.
Its nice to have the fast tutorials that dont hold your hand and just give you the concept, which is all i need.
If you arent there yet, go do 30 slower tutorials and come back here. You will then be very grateful.
Used a photo of my childhood home and rendered my dad walking out just like when I was a kid. Thanks, Ian.
With moths. For realism.
Aww, so sweet
throw in some flying paper and a school of fish and you're good to go. That completes the 'Dad went out to buy milk and never came back' starter pack
add some moth for realism
Add a duck
This man will change the way tutorials are made.
Aomori Teachers even cgmatter got inspired by this guy and made tutorials of similar styles
He already is.
We can only hope
@@Cyanidedan And BlenderBinge, which I highly recommend, also started doing quick tutorials.
@@Cyanidedan Ive seen the cgmatter one, its like "not really" but i understand. he took a relatively small and insignificant topic and made a short video on it unlike this, here its more like a "start to finish" topic in short amount of time.
These are super fun Ian! Don't ever stop.
Oh thanks, man!! I love your channel! :D
cg geek and ian pls be a bit slow and beginner friendly but also make sure the videos are not taking to long because people wouldn't be interested in it and i am basically lazy

Those 30 minute tutorials usually go more in depth and are more beginner friendly.

Instructions unclear, taught the moths how to love but I taught them too well. Now they've gone full yandere and are trying to ram their bodies through the building's windows to get to the lamp. It's pure chaos.

Fortunately you've added some realism to the scene.
Uh guys....I think I've fucked up even more. The moths are now eating down the International Space Station.
How did you get moths? All I got was a glazed donut...
look what we have here, another "funny internet guy"
Well you'll have the realism to your scene 😆
i like how your tutorials are the mid-range.
too quick for beginners, not detailed enough for pros, just the right amount for the ones in the middle who get the terms but can't decide on what's the most effective thing to do a thing.
I don’t even model stuff I just love these tutorials lmao
I don't blame you
Same but be careful. After years of watching, I accidentally tried modelling stuff very recently and now I'm not sure I can stop.

I ran into a problem when the texture kept on dragging with the vertices even when I had 'Correct UVs' active.
SOLUTION: In the upper right above the Viewport selection(the different balls), open the 'Options' selection and check the box on 'Transform: Correct face Attributes'.
Anyway, awesome videos, I love these! Me and my trainer in Blender have been changing between awe struck and laughing our butts of realizing how overly complicated we have been doing things :D
thankssss
legend
I love these. Shows that Blender isn’t scary and that it can be easy, fun and effective with a bit of work. Keep ‘em coming!
A bit of work, a lot of knowledge.
ive tried it multiple times by myself trying to figure out all the tools and its quite complex as there isnt a simple clicky thing that says whats this? and then you click and you learn. The manual for blender is absolute aids too.
I first learned 3D using Maya in a college course elective. During that I opened blender to check out what it was all about. Quickly shut it down because i thought it was too confusing. Fast forward a few years one donut tutorial later. I can't imagine using anything other than blender. 3ds Max and Maya are extremely confusing and feel very limited in what they can do compared to Blender.
Blender is not that complicated, but basic controls are unintuitive at times, compared to Unity for example
@AngryBoiArtiom You can hover over most things and it'll tell you what it does in a tool-tip. If you're having problems learning, watch some tutorials.
i wouldn't watch a 1 hour long tutorial, but i would watch 1 hour of 1 minutes long tutorials
that's so true. a 1 minute tutorial has to be really good but most 1 hour tutorials suck
I've been doing cg for 15 years now and I hate the fact i don't work as smartly as you do. You sir are a time saving, lateral thinking genius
To be honest, his way of thinking almost always revolves around references and then crude approximations. If you want your building to be top notch quality work you won't do it like this.
@@dvl973 I agree I wouldn't approach it like this for a hero object, but for any background element it's perfect.
@@FrigstadFilm not disputing that I think this is a great way to approach environments. Just where do I get all the free building photos from lol.

@@soggybreadman4035 yeah but you could reasonably be expected to figure that out with google

and here i am . manually texture painting the entire building . from scratch. i guess high effort is not required some times.
When I moved from 2D to 3D, my perfectionism really made it hard for me to finish basic shit. I'm still learning so much from these videos as they show that working efficient can lead to awesome results. 3D is such a complex field, you gotta optimize stuff like crazy
Depends on what are you doing this for. If it is for a 20 seconds long video in some indie movie - better make it very smart and fast. If it is for a game or for a part of a movie where it is necessary to be detailed - this kind of approach will suck, cuz you will rework it countless and loose much more time.
Yes.
Perfectionism is a hell of a drug....
Yeah there's DEFINITELY times you want to do stuff by hand and really put the time in. Like, this technique is cool, but it cuts a lot of corners, and definitely results in texture stretching that would totally throw off a nice close-up render (that said, you can fix the stretching pretty easily, but that gets into full-on UV unwrapping and stuff).
Why this one tutorial was so adorable?xD
Like aww, rooms. Buildings. Creepily using your friends' apartment photo as a texture for your projects. Aww.

I always used to think the more I model everything in detail, the better the result would be. Well, you just blew those thoughts away. Anything not supposed to be on focus can be fast-modeled with that way, saving A LOT of time which can be used to perfect points of interest.
Thanks man✌️
Woah i don't know you could use projection mapping like that, thank you man!
I like how he shows a simple scene at first and at the end cuts to a super complex Hollywood level CGI that makes my mind explode with so much information
Now I feel like I wanted longer tutorials from you!
I sorta think it would be cool if he posted 2 versions of his videos. Like, an in depth tutorial, as well as a lazy version.
Totally! But not too in-depth, just the right amount! But hey, he give us this crazy work for free, so let's not ask him too much ^^
The way you show it to us makes this look way easier then it should be
The fact that we can understand these tutorials is because we watched and learned a lot from all the other 30 minute ones. These work like a complement to them, like a quick recap. Great work as always Ian!
Yeah, no. I am a programmer and I love these tutorials. I wouldn't be able to do it just as easily, but this actually shows concepts that I can understand and I just need to google "how to extrude", "how to load image", etc. which is way easier than looking up "how to prototype building fast" :-D
Never touched blender, I'm just here appreciating that you are giving an entire generation light speed. Even helping in the comments. Your impact is immense.
The only youtube series that is straight to the point and doesn’t add a bunch of filler bullshit for view time
I love how he’s always a little sheepish at the end like “it’s a little useful”
I'd love to see this kind of tutorials for EVERYTHING, from blender throught physics all the way to taxidermy. It would so much less overwheling to start working on any hobby that way
men, you are literally the freaking best in regards of tutorials!
yeah, we def are!

the thing that's so good about these tutorials is that they are completely impossible to follow for beginners. the idea that you have to show every step in excruciating detail is good for people learning blender, but not those who are already familiar with blender.
thank you for creating this style of tutorial
The first few seconds: *The lesson in class*
The last few seconds: *The homework*
Between you and CGMatter, I have learned so much in the last 20 minutes.
Random tips:
If you want to keep the face count minimal use a decimate modifier with the setting changed to planar, with the delimit setting set to UV's. That's going to prevent the textures go crazy.
You can also reproject some textures onto other places to get rid of stretched textures in the faces you extruded
These are singlehandedly some of the best tutorials for blender. They work perfectly for someone who understands the program well but wants new ways of doing old tricks.
Thats how we did a large chunk of west London for a project. Its actually easier if you remove the windows and then subdivide them, that way you can duplicate the one you made and the buildings have less polys to strain your Riva TNT 2 Ultra ;o)
Care to elaborate? What do you mean by "remove the windows and subdivide them"? Then what are you duplicating exactly?
I dont even use blender but still am watching your lazy tutorials like they are so fun to watch
Correct UVs !? That's a thing!!!
Yes!
YESSS! I kept doing the thing where I kept adding loops splitting the difference until one was finally close enough for, like, YEARS.

@@IanHubert2 Thanks for pointing out the UV squares addon in your pipe video. It's helped a lot. I have been using a lot of trim sheets for concept models and I used to painstakingly align loops using the scale tool

Less than a minute to explain something. We need more of this in the community.
