    Just wanted to say that I made this recipe as a teenager back in 2008 for my family and it came out great. After many years, I decided to revisit this video to make this for my girlfriend and it did not disappoint. Thanks, Kai!

    _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
    OK so I just made this and I didn't have chicken stock, dark soy, or cornstarch. (The cornstarch helps thicken the sauce). And WOW that was a big mistake! So make sure you add these ingredients too or the chicken won't taste perfect. But with or without it, the chicken still tasted delicious

I gained so much knowledge from your videos that the mystery of basic Asian cuisine has been demystified for me! My only question is what happened to all your videos? So much info no longer available 😢 . I’m sure you have your reasons. I can only say Thank you once again! Plus as a musician and food fan there has never been a better saying than “Wok and Roll”! Thank you again from me and my family to you and yours!

    I watched this video for the first time about 10 years ago. Seriously changed my life. Now I keep hoisin, sesame oil, rice wine vinegar and other ingredients that only come in small bottles at my local grocery store in my cupboard. Cooking is a whole different world now. Thank you!!

  • @shelbykirk183
    @shelbykirk183 9 лет назад +38

    I had a pound and a half of chicken so I doubled the recipe. It was definitely needed. Additionally, I didnt have hoisin sauce, but oyster sauce worked just fine. I used sesame seeds and honey at the very end for a little more sweet taste. Everything turned out spectacularly. Oh, and just toss all the chicken in a bag or container with flour, it comes out just the same - but less work.

    • @kidz919

      Good idea. I always wondered how to make the sauce taste sweeter because just about every recipe I find, the sauce always tastes too bitter or is too thin

    Switch the chicken breast to chicken thighs and the flavor is night and day, not to mention breast drys out much easier. Also, a rule of thumb in the kitchen, when battering chicken, you dont need the egg yolks. The dish is heavy as it is, using whites allows for a lighter, fluffier, crunchier (less eggy and chooey) batter, which takes on the sauce better. Also, a trick to this particular dish is in the frying technique. Removing from oil, re-dipping , incorporates an ancient method which allows for the batter to expand and develop. Nothing against your version, this is a quick and simple version for anyone to try. But if your serious about making this dish because it is one of your favorites, I encourage you, these techniques make all the difference in the world. Also, a quick version of general tsos sauce, thai sweet chili with teriyaki.

    If you use your intelligence you could add chillies with it at the same time you put the spring onion in. The whole idea is to use these vids as guides and manipulate the dish as you see fit.

    Where are the dried chili pepper? Everywhere I ever had General Tso's chicken it had chili flakes in it. I guess I can add dried pepper flakes but it would be nice to have it included into the recipe so I know how much to use.

      It's not necessary to add chili pepper in this recipe. It depend on how strong you can eat. (Chinese, they don't really like chili.)

    • @ddland45
      @ddland45 9 лет назад

      Why? Did it taste different than what you buy at the restaurant? How?
      Too bland?
      Too spicy?
      Flavor wasn't right?
      Chicken overcooked?

      IDK man, this recipe is easy and very flavorful. I have been a chef for 10 years. It's far superior to any take out or dine in i've ever had. I'd say try it again, most things are worth a second chance.

    I tried it this evening and it was delicious. Only thing is I found there was not enough sauce to coat 1lb of chicken so I made another batch of sauce, heated it up and mixed it in! I would probably go a little lighter on the sesame oil next time. Thank you for sharing this delicious recipe!

    I've used this recipe 4 times now.
    Two things:
    1. Add a small teaspoon of ketchup for the tanginess often experienced in restaurants.
    2. If you don't have chicken stock, you can just substitute salty water.

    My favorite as well! This was beautiful glad I found you. I used to go to my local Chinese restaurants like everyday for lunch or dinner. In the states but now I live in the mountains of Norway above the arctic circle. And I must say I miss my Chinese take out the most. WE just dont have that here so I have to make it all from scratch if I can. So ty and like I said beautiful.
