  • The Insta360 One X is amazing, but working with the media files can be really frustrating. With all this potential, what’s the best way to get your files from the camera through editing to RUclips? And, what does GoPro have to do with this? #insta360 #Videoproductionequipment #videoediting

9:15 Managing keyframes and velocity with the GoPro plug-in
12:47 Using the GoPro VR plug-in with Bullet time for amazing effects
14:25 Installing and using the Insta360 One X LUT for color correction
19:22 Working with .insv, mp4 and LongGOP media and why file conversion might help
Most content creators aren’t using the 1X for 360 videos. Instead this camera really shines when you shoot in 5.7 k and then reframe your shots to 1080, adjusting the camera movement, framing and focal length.
There are a bunch of different ways to do that. If you own a 1X you’ve probably discovered that none of them are… well… perfect. They each involve compromise. So let’s talk about how to get the most from each option, and when to use an alternative. It can be a little confusing so I will show you four options… the mobile app, the Studio 1X desktop app, Premiere plug-ins and finally file conversion.
For flexibility and control, download, install and use GoPro’s VR plugins for the Adobe suite. The results are often better than what you get from the One X Studio application and they work in both After Effects and Premiere.
The easiest and most accessible way to prepare your footage is to use the Insta360 phone app. You can transfer your footage via WiFi or connect a cable to your phone. Once the media is on your phone you reframe the footage the way you want it, and save it as a new MP4 file. One problem is the Insta360 1X app does not let you control compression settings or format when exporting your new file.
This camera creates source files in a proprietary format. These .insv files are essentially an mp4 file that maxes out at 120 mega-bits-per-second. Not great, not awful, but because its MP4 its compressed. Now when you transfer this source file from the camera to the app, reframe you shots and then export it, you will be creating a new, even more compressed mp4 file using that already compressed source footage. But wait we’re not done if you plan to use this new file as source footage during editing because it will eventually be compressed at least one more time when you output your final video. That’s at least 3 rounds of compression. Some with no control over codec or bitrate.
The lame export process doesn’t mean you abandon the mobile app. Especially since some key features like motion blur on hyperlapse, optical flow and some slomo features are only available here. What it really means is asking yourself the question, “can I accomplish what I want later in editing using the original file?” If yes then I skip using my phone. If the answer is no, because I need motion blur for example, then I am outputting from the app.
A second production path is using the Insta360 Studio desktop application designed for working with 1X media. But forget trying to run the most recent 1X Studio application on a laptop. The software is unstable, it freezes, it crashes, media won’t play smoothly, if at all. And like the phone you still have to recompress files for output. The experience with my desktop computer is better, mostly because it is a custom made, enterprise-level beast designed for 6K editing. Most folks just don’t have that kind of horsepower available. Additionally, the studio software is missing many of the best functions you find on the mobile app.
I would love to show you the Insta360 1X Adobe plugin. They advertise it as if it already exists. But I’m not finding it. Even after repeated installations of the 1X Studio desktop app.
That’s why I gave up and went to a plug-in that works. GoPro. As I said off the top, download, install and use GoPro’s VR plugins for the Adobe suite. You won’t have motion blur for hyperlapse, I still use the mobile app for that, but I have greater control over my framing, the fluidity of my keyframes, my color correction and can even get better results with bullet effect.

Agree. They have certainly addressed some of the performance issues with the desktop Studio app. And I think the Premiere plug-in (which really is about stitching equirectangular footage upon import rather than working with the files during editing) is also working a bit smoother. At least if feels like it. The desktop app is still pretty flaky on my laptop, but I agree it is not as bad. I have a feeling it has something to do with how the software is using the GPU. It does not feel as fluid as Adobe or Resolve. But progress is progress. Now if only they would port some of the features from the iOS side over to the desktop side I would be very happy.

LOL!! Sue is the best name for the camera - it's my name too! You made me laugh several times throughout your excellent video. I've found it quite annoying working through the 'can do' and 'can't do's' in the various software for the OneX and had lots of issues working in Premier, also finding I'd downgraded the footage quality somehow. So it's been wonderful to watch your video and know that I'm not going mad or got too old to work these things out. These issues had made me shy from playing with the editing which normally I enjoy the challenge. I love the camera and will now go back to square one! Thank you for sharing! WELL DONE

Thanks Sue for the kind words. I named my car "Pearl", guess we just named my 1X "Sue". :) I am glad you found it helpful. We are pushing the tech in unanticipated ways and that means lots of roadblocks. But together as creators and filmmakers will will figure out the best and most efficient ways to tell our stories. Sure it can be frustrating, but sometimes those puzzles are the fun part. The key word there is "sometimes". More often than not it just hacks me off. As you discover new solutions I'd love to hear about it. That is how all of us get better.

I had my first experience working with the insta360 . I had to make sure to export my file to mp4 within the insta studio by saving it into a file folder, and not on a main drive. For some reason it would not export for me if i didnt do it that way. Then, I had to cut down the file size some more within Filmora 9 (Davinci Resolve studio would not accept the 360 file for some reason). Then the upload to youtube for a 15 minute uncut 360 video took about 2 hours and additional 2-4 hours of youtube processing the 360 file for view. Not something I want to do everyday for raw 360 video, but im sure its different and easier to work with youtube if you edited keyframes in the insta360 app.

Well, I may be a rare case but I do use my One X for full 360 VR video, and love it. Of course, viewing on a flat panel is lame (wiping across and up and down to move the image). You have to use a good VR headset. Do that, and you will be amazed. It's not like you brought home great videos of someplace, it's like you are there.

    • @SteveandLizDonaldson
      @SteveandLizDonaldson 5 лет назад +3

@@vrdrifter4933 Thanks, I'm new to this and just learning like most of us! Here's my workflow. If you have any thoughts or anything I can learn, please let me know!
      1. Take the video clips with my insta360 One X.
      2. Pull the microSD card out, put it in the SD adapter, then transfer the files to my laptop.
      3. Use the insta360 Studio for One X to merge the two mystery files into one stabilized .mp4 file per video clip.
      4. I then edit the files (trim, text, dissolves, add music, etc) using Pinnacle Studio 21, since that's what I had already and it can do limited 360. Note it can only go up to 3840x1920, which is less than the camera can generate. The output is another .mp4 file.
      5. Before uploading to RUclips, I run the file through the google metadata injector that you have to download first. Here is the link:
      support.google.com/youtube/answer/6178631
It only takes a few minutes to process, and adds _injected to the file name
      6. Upload to RUclips. With the metadata injected, RUclips knows it's 360 so you don't have to somehow tell it. Yes, all a PITA but I think it's cool, too.

It appears the current plug-in is not for reframing or increasing the functionality of working with the media in Premiere/AE. It is there strictly for managing the stitching settings (normal, dive case, etc.) and stabilization. Important tools, but not part of storytelling or composition. They offer instructions for leveraging the current plugin here: bit.ly/2TEAhll But I agree, the software support is rather disappointing for such an incredible piece of hardware. And thanks for watching and the comment.

Hi StoryGuide, quick question... on your bullet time footage it looks like you're recording it using one of the regular video mode (and not the dedicated in-camera "bullet time" mode). Is that correct? I love the ability to pan/tilt around in post but it seems like this requires recording in one of the regular video modes (the "bullet time" mode only gives me a flat 16x9 video, not orientation-adjustable 360 footage).
My question is how were you able to get your "regular mode" bullet time footage to stay centered on you the whole time. When I use the selfie-stick and bullet time handle but record in a "regular mode" video my footage doesn't keep me in the middle of the frame and requires key-framing every frame manually to keep me in the center. Clearly in your video example here you were able to avoid that but I'm not sure how. Any insight?

Great video, very professional presentation. I have a iMac 3.4g with 40g of RAM and the Studio 2019 software works well but is limited. The most important this I have found so far is to make sure that your shutter speed is set to fast, not auto and white balance is not set to auto. Under certain circumstances the auto shutter can slow down so much that it makes for really crappy looking footage. Also auto WB can lead to different WBs for each side of the camera, causing a line in the footage. If you do use the Insta software make sure to export 4K res and at least 60mbps bitrate for decent quality.

This is the first One X video where I actually felt like I learned something I can use even when using different cameras. You are a very good teacher. So maybe you can figure this problem I have. Premiere Pro 2018 just doesn't recognize the .insv format so I can't import the footage. When Premiere boots up I see Insta360importer.prm in the loading screen so I don't know why I am having this problem. I am on Windows 7 and I think I am going to have to start over with Windows 10 from scratch and see if that solves this little hiccup but other than this one problem I am happy with my setup. I think remnants of past Adobe products may be the issue which is why a fresh Windows 10 install may be what works. If you have an easier solution I would love to hear it.

Wish they had a plugin for Davinci Resolve.

I maybe speaking under correction, but doesnt Davinci use the same plugins as Fusion. I just got the camera today and saw in this video when he downloaded the Go Pro plugin that there was a Fusion plugin. I would be interested if that works, because since Blackmagic purchased Fusion from Eyeon Software, they have made Fusion now look like Davinci and somewhat incorporated them. Also the free version of Fusion doesnt support plugins. Cant say if the free Davince does either.

Incase anyone didn't know. Gopro have released a better plugin called GoPro FX Reframe. It works better than the old VR reframe plugin.

When I use the Insta360 Studio 2019 with the native insv files, my playback is smooth and the colors look great. However, when I use Premiere Pro and convert the insv files to ProRes HQ, my colors look washed out and flat. I would prefer to use premiere, but the video looks so much better in Insta 360 Studio. Why are is there such a difference in color? Any Suggestions? Thanks.

May have missed it but how and when did you convert the .insv file to .mov as you're showing on your timeline in Adobe Premiere?

For LUT installation for MAC users drop the lut into these two files (you may need to Create LUTs\Creative etc. first time)
    /Users//Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/LUTs/Creative
    /Users//Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/LUTs/Technical

Thanks for the video. I personal use CyberLink unfortunately I have to export from Insta360 Studio. I am really baffled by this as Garmin 2017 360 cam did in camera stitching. This is not what Garmin's main business is and they got it right IMHO. Don't get me wrong this is my second Insta360 camera it's amazing when you get things right. Just a lot of dis-appointments. Red Lens flare is top of my list along with video editing. We all do not own iPhone's or own Adobe products.... Great video review along with education. LOL! Bill or George! Anything but Sue!

A really good job and without the zippy jerky movements and inane background music that so dominates today's RUclips videos! However one thing really irritates me and that is there is no mention of Final Cut Pro as a much lower cost alternative. Using Adobe means at least a $30.00 monthly ding to your credit card. No one every mentions this! FCP X does almost all the same things as the Go Pro plugin at far less cost! and if you add a couple of low cost plugins, you can key frame all the actions that the Go Pro plugin does in Premier amd is all done in Pro Rex. Plus you can even have you footage temporairly transcoded at a lower resolution if your computer doesn't have enough power. Have you looked at SugarFX? or Alex 4D
