I fully agree with you and love the video; well done. The DJI Pocket 3 is currently $400 at Sam's Club until Dec 2nd, and the Hollyland Mics you showed off is about $97 on Amazon at the moment. I started with my iPhone Xr and then moved to an iPhone 12 Pro Max, which I still use heavily. I just started using my DJI Pocket 3 this year, a few months after I bought it, as the color was different in my videos, and it took me a bit to get used to. I still use the DJI mic set (I hate Rodes and am not impressed with the DJI Mic 2 set I purchased this year as it seems to pick up cell phone conversations). I am 55 and started my RUclips channel in 2020.
random i know, and i've only seen a couple of your vids, but gotta give props and say I love the creative ways you use your mic. Maybe its my years of working in TV and school where it was drilled into my head to "hide the mic," that it drives me nuts seeing all these creators who just hold their omnidirectional lav mics. At least you do something fun with yours. So, Kudos to you for keeping it fun
Thank you …very informative. 40 plus here and decided to upload my first video today. I’m using my phone for now however when I’m about to purchase equipment, your video gave me a benchmark to at least begin researching equipment . This was very comprehensive. My old behind don’t know what I’m even doing but this made me feel better equipped 🙏🏾
Not sure if you are already aware but you can connect the DJI mic to your phone by bluetooth. There is also the the option if you had the adapter to connect that to the phone.
I'm a new 40 youtuber. Started launching our content September 3rd. I'm loving your content. I'm wondering how others could join your coaching program? Please let me know how we could sign up.
3 weeks in to my channel, and have so far been doing it with my iPhone, tripod and just got a microphone. But have been looking at cameras, and that one was on my list so I’m glad to see your review on it! 😊
Thank you so much for sharing this! I've been wanting to start a channel for so long and its the tech setup that is holding me back, so your video was SO helpful!
Even though I am used to cameras I shot my first shorts with my iphone because I had pushed creating for years and wanted to create less mental barriers.
You only need the wind cover on the mic, when it's really windy. Leave it off and you can wear the mic on your blouse, as it's meant to. No scratchy noise, without the cover 😉
The DJI Osmo has been a game-changer for me! In the past two weeks, I’ve posted four times, which is a huge improvement for me and I'm happy how my vlogs have turned out. I used to feel awkward using my camera in public and found it hard to speak on camera in front of others. But with the DJI Osmo, it’s like all that hesitation is gone-I don’t even think twice anymore! It’s made vlogging so much easier and more enjoyable 😊
I recently purchased one and this is the exact reason. I also have trouble vlogging in public, even with my phone at times. I am very excited to get my DJI!
@ honestly you going to see a huge difference! It’s so much easier, you won’t think twice when you are vlogging outside or in cafes! Makes like so much easier 😃
This is such a helpful video! I've been looking at the DJI Osmo Pocket, but I figure I should post at least 5 videos on a regular basis before I invest in any other equipment. LOL Editing challenges are definitely the part that holds me up, but also worrying about the cringe factor and storing all the clips, and well... I can always come up with a list! But I'm so glad RUclips suggested your channel to me. Looking forward to looking through your content more!
I absolutely love the Spoon! The most original thing I've seen on RUclips in over a decade. I wish you the continued success going forward. I'm trying to figure out on what to do for a RUclips channel. Even after watching so many videos, I can't think what I'm knowledgeable about.
Our zone of genius is usually the thing that comes so easy to us we don’t even realize it’s what we can help others with. Choose the thing that others tell you “you make it look so easy!”
Update the firmware on you DJI mic. The sound is supposed to be much better after the update. My last video I made was recorded on the old firmware and it sounds muddy.
Somewhat disappointed here and I, like other commenters, would like to offer glowing support, but feel the need to offer some positive criticism. At least, I hope you take it that way. Audio is so important. The spoon is creative but is really not better than clipping the DJI mic to your clothing as it is intended. Holding the spoon means you can't use that hand freely to point at your products as you so often tried to do anyway. Waving the spoon/mic around trying to point at the iPhone finger-clip causes the audio to have less quality and you to have less professionalism, charming as it is. Clip the mic to your clothing 4-5" below your chin and a couple inches to either side of center to reduce potential esses and popping sounds in your audio. The wind muff on the mic also helps avoid esses and background noise. For even a little more audio quality and less visibility, add a LAV mic to the DJI Mic, plug it in instead of the muff, clip the DJI mic to your waist, and run the LAV wire inside your shirt up to the same spot described earlier. Even a less expensive LAV mic will work great and means that your content about budget-priced gear remains on point. With a free hand, you can hold the iPhone steady so we can focus on it, and simply point to the features instead of shaking the iPhone for emphasis. Please consider these small points as you rewatch this video to see if they might be helpful. Congratulations on passing the 1K subs achievement and here are wishes for many more for you!
The Pocket 3 is amazing. I have been a big fan of the Pocket line and have used them from inside to out in the woods and mountains to backpacking and skiing. Nice Channel you have... Cheers from a fellow over 40 Content Creator ;-)
Super helpful! I created a new folder “Equipment” and this is the first video in it 😊 Thank you so much for sharing what you use! Someday I definitely want to get those lights so I can set up my “studio” in the basement. I have a really cool background down there so--Goals! ❤
I got the creator combo as well and I love it, specially when I’m recording outside since is a small camera not everyone looking at you while talking to the camera lol I doesn’t call people attention like the big camera does, great video congratulations.
I’m so excited I watched you video this morning about how to record. I did it today! It helped me so much. Ty so much! I used tongs too for my microphone. My tongs are steel and red. I don’t care tho. BTW I’m a boomer. I’m 62 in November. 🥰👍
I have the Ulanzi tripod. I hate it. It tends to slide down easily. Also I can recommend the FIFINE M9 wireless mic system. Just filmed a review that comes out Sunday. My first video in such a long time. I totally get how gear can be a hurdle to creating content, but the truth is the hurdle is ourselves. Gear, time, setup etc. is the excuse we use to avoid creating. In reality it's out internal dialog that frames our reality. Congrats on starting again. Cheers.
This is the first time I’ve seen your video and I’m loving it. I would like to set up a RUclips channel. Could you please walk me through how t sign up. Can you explain more about filling out the affiliate form etc. thanks.
I'm using my iPhone 13 Pro Max right now. I have an old GoPro that I use for other types of videos but I use my iPhone A LOT! This is a great video! thank You! I am 58 years old and started focusing more on my channel this year. Hoping for the best.
Love the setup you have especially the wooden spoon. ☺️ The Lark M2 that you show here is great...I have used for 2 weeks now.... perfect sound and Im from 🇸🇪 and over 60....😎
yay - I just ordered the Hollyland Lark mic and transmitter - I would love to try the DJI Osmo but it's a bit of a stretch for now. One day! I love your 'keep it simple' approach, thank you .
Was scrolling and I couldn't skip this video. Big fan of your mic stand! I have a question about the microphone on your blouse the round one, does that have some type of magnet on the other side to attach it to clothing?
DJI Mic 2 is a good easy choice for audio :) I would say to everyone - focus on audio first, then lighting, then everything else. Good audio is more important than a good camera. And if you're new/not familiar with working with audio, anything with 32-bit float recording (not 24, not 16) will be your friend. Most non-professionals lack mic etiquette at first and end up with clipped and distorted audio. With 32-bit float you'll barely have to think about your audio levels because audio clipping isn't really a thing. And don't look at price or brand when it comes to gear, look at specs. Sweet video.

BTW - the DJI Mic 2 connects directly to my Samsung S23, I believe it will connect via bluetooth to your IPhone as well. Good luck with your channel. I did subscribe. Here's to Over 40 (50) RUclipsrs!
I only have an iPhone 11pro, so I’m stuck. Not really able to buy a camera that’s $600. Not sure what to do, but I’ll keep watching. You’re wonderful! I want to keep it simple. Because I have a family and a freelance job. I need to make content quick and keep going. Not setting up a television studio, lol. But I’m excited to start somehow…
Ughhh I feel like the world wants me to get a DJI Pocket3 LOL I film all my content on my phone and so far so good but Tokyo is so fast paced, pulling out my phone to film sometimes slows me down. Maybe I need to gon' head and pick one up. Thanks for this video!
The mic on the wooden spoon tho lol. question - The Hollyland mic does it pic up surrounding noise? I love the fact that they are magnetic - so no hassle with clipping to clothes. I use a mic that is great for not picking up the noise around me but the clip is very flimsy and thens to flop around when I move around.
When I started my Channel last year, I had no clue how to start it. I asked help from our IT guy from my job. I bought right away a Sony ZVe 10 camera with Sony tripod and special camera lense. Plus 3 more tripods. I tried using the camera in the beginning and I since I’m not a camera person. I spend too much time learning how to operate it. I end up using my iPhone and the camera just sit on my computer table. If I had to do it again I’d just start with an iPhone. What matters is just do the video, upload it and stop over thinking!
You are so right! I didn’t even mention in this video that I bought another camera after having given up on the t2i… that camera never got used for video 😫. I love using my iPhone to film and take photos- it really is an all in one tool!
