  • The Element14 PiDesktop case for the Raspberry Pi is something that has a place in the market. It’s not completely obvious who this is for, but this video might give you a better idea. Grab your Pi Desktop case direct from Element14 here techwiztime.com/PiDesktop
In order to get the most from a PiDesktop case, you will need a mSATA SSD drive here TBA. These range from 32GB through to a massive 1TB. Aside from the mSATA drive, you will also need to supply your own Raspberry Pi (preferably a Raspberry Pi 3) and a 5v 2.5Amp power suppply. You can find both at Amazon amzn.to/2sKMgwe
The video details exactly how the case is constructed and what goes where. Showing how to attach the add-on board to the Raspberry Pi GPIO Pins, inserting the RTC (Real Time Clock) battery (used to retain the time and date even when powered off), and the correct orientation of the lid so everything lines up.

If you are looking to boot directly off the mSATA SSD, then I recommend checking out my previous video on Boot Raspbian and LibreELEC Kodi via PiDesktop mSATA stay tuned....

If you don't have a *VPN* already, then I *highly recommend* www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/buy-vpn/techwiz-00100 or *PIA* They are very *affordable* and don't store logs. I've personally been using them for over 5 years :)

Thank you for a great video! Will this (AMAZING) case work with Raspberry Pi 4 models? (Having msata is suuuuuuuuuper useful)

Great review, and was glad to see you purchased it yourself. 😋 PS: Audio is really soft on this one.

nicely spoken but can you show the stuff youre talking about in the video more next time? this video was 90% you talking and 10% actual product.

Definitely is nice knowing there are some options like this. It is slick looking. Not having a power button def sucks. I rigged up one from an old PC case and plugged it in to the GPIO. It's only software driven and shuts down the computer using a script once it's pressed. So having an actual power button in this case is great, and actually kinda complicated if you were to buy all the parts yourself.

I have a question. I loved your review. But i want to modify it a bit. I would like to add a fan and a battery and possible a hard drive other then the SSD. Do you think you could do a build like that?

it has a spot for a fan

A musician, RUSH, had it right when they said ... "show me don't tell me".
Lots of verbal description but not enough showing how it is done.

very good, great case! ..i have two of these BUT i have had to add a cooling fan otherwise my raspi 3 went too hot. Please add,in the next version of the case, a cooling fan! And another hint: let the user to add and remove the micro-sd card without dismantle all the raspi set-up... Many Thanks!

Does the case have the ability to mount a fan to circulate the air? If not then adding the heat sink to the PI is really not needed.

it does have a spot for a fan built in

how slow and bottled necked is the SSD slot?

    • @amihartz
      @amihartz 5 лет назад

It's bottle-necked by the Raspberry Pi's USB speeds which is about 480 Mb/s. I've tested my microSD card which is just a standard Samsung 32 GB card and I get about 100 Mb/s speeds. I've tested my SSD which is a Dogfish 64 GB card and I get about 250 Mb/s. So you get a significant performance increase but it definitely is bottle-necked.

    Why a bigger case?
Well, the stock case that is sold as an add-on accessory, might just fall off the table and not work ever again.
A larger case that can sit on a table (desk) would lessen the liklihood of this happening.
I think this is so cool. I missed the PowerPC "revolution" of 1994 to 2005. Couldn't afford it.
Now I see a RISC-based PC that is too small case. Make a bigger one, and people will flock to it.
Good idea whose time has come mate.

well, it is even more expensive than the raspberry pi itself
