    • @checkforfleas9452
      @checkforfleas9452 5 лет назад

      @@gavinfaync yea it is completely pointless to water cool a raspi. I mean if water cooling a pc works for u. Be my guest. I use to swear by water cooling until my brain got to thinking. It does work yes. But, in all reality it takes longer to heat up the liquid and once it does get to that certain consistent temp. That's where it will stay. But, there's so many factors. In my opinion it doesn't work for me. Now mind u. These are all theories that people have. The only way to tell is to buy all of them and test yourself. Now. It does work great for open air PC. Obviously. So yes I would use it if I did that most certainly. I love my cooler master vs my liquid cooling. But, if u think about the theory. Your car. Its the same type of system. Its cold outside so u have to warm up your to get hot air. Same thing almost. But same concept. I'm not going to bash some one for believing that water cooling is better. My cooler master works great for my system. So I'm ok with that lol. But, water cooling a pi is just stupid and senseless lol. With that u could slap a heatsink on it and a fan in a case and it would work just fine. It works just fine. They are ment to run like that. So they do. But, tools like him just want to give useless info to people lol.

    I actually watercooled my ODROID XU4, however in this case it was "called for". The thing hit 90+ C instantly when throttled up to 2 GHz at high load. I use it for a media server/file server/TV tuner/DVR server that does on-demand transcoding (PLEX Media Server and TVHeadend)
    It will still get to 75, but it no longer cuts performance. And it looks cool. ;) If you look at the design of the XU4, there's quite simply no proper way to cool it, the heatsink mounts are off-center the SOC, so you never get even pressure.
    I used an 80 mm radiator, and a $6 12V fountain pump. (spare me the hate, it'll get "proper" hardware eventually).

    That's just crazy dude! Seriously though if someone would make an all in one case/water cooler that would be great because the surface area for heatsink connection is so tiny that having the whole case top as a radiator would be cool. I just got an Asus Tinker board and that thing gets super hot which is why I rewatched this video. Thanks.

      "Hacker" doesn't simply refer to the script kiddy persona you see portrayed in hollywood films.
      I know plenty of old school software devs that refer to themselves as hackers because they simply "hack together" some code to solve a particular problem. Likewise there are "hackers" who specialize in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering projects.

    In reference to his closing remarks: The capacitor doesn't "control" the voltage. Depending on value, it is acting as a hold up (prevent quick changes in voltage) or a bypass capacitor (provide close proximity source of high frequency current draw). You can't increase or decrease voltage with it, you could only affect if you are seeing sags in voltage from the current draw. Adding a bypass capacitor could help if you are seeing your supply sag more as you increase your operating frequency, a 0.1uf is a typical value for bypass and might help in parallel with whatever is already there (put it as close to the chip you are concerned with to minimize inductive line effects), but you will never increase above what the supply circuit supplies. With how crazy this project is getting you might as well cut the trace and solder in an external supply that provides you with whatever voltage you want.

    I understand wanting to keep the CPU as cool as possible, but this approach doesn't make sense. You could get a passively cooled heatsink smaller than the size of that radiator alone that would do as good of a job, would cost less, and take less effort to work on.
    Considering you didn't really achieve a higher overclock over the other tested heatsink, this has proven to be a waste of time.

      Isn't is a bit overkill? I mean, when your cooling system is 10x the size of your computer, there's a problem! lol
      You could probably get similar results just by using a bigger heat-sink. What makes the raspberry pi so interesting is its low price, its small size and its low power consumption. Three things that your water-cooling system is killing!
      I hope you don't expect this setup to run on batteries for a long period of time...

    I've got my RPi3 overclocked to 1.35GHz. CPU running at ~75% most of the time with occasional spikes to 100%, it's cooled with a copper radiator having a fan sitting on top of it. Runs at 59deg at the moment (haven't been switched off since ~8months). Another unit is outside (in a waterproof box with an acrylic "peek hole" for the camera) and when it's exposed to the sun I had not seen it exceeded 65deg (it's winter now so it's oscilates around 30deg), this one's running 6 months now. These "cooling systems" costed me 5GBP. So if watercooling won't let you go beyond 1.5GHz, then it's pointless in production settings. Unless you want it to be super quiet (and super huge). Otherwise, the video is a great proof of concept :)

    I am designing a portable water cooled rpi3 for a backpack set up. The prototype works in tandem with a drone that does simple things like follow me, assist in builds(for now it orders parts), hunting wild boar or rabbits. I’m writing a ton of code to get this drone to work on its own but steal processing power from the rpi3 backpack when it needs to do higher level calculations and what not. I want to use a laptop eventually but nothing has the processing power I need to get the bot to compile the code it needs and run at the same time. So simple observe and report until then. It works great for portable pen testing WiFi and basic transmissions from wireless devices. Without physically being there. I hope to show the build by june
