    Or just connect any regular SSD up to it through a USB to SATA connector.

    Let's give you the option to mount an SSD and then run it through USB 2.0 port so we rob you of ANY speed benefit an SSD would bring to the party.

      In their defense, there's no better way to do it-the USB 2.0 is the fastest interface the Pi has. Which of course means there is no reason for a product like this to exist in the first place.

      I've been running a Pi based car media system for about a year now. I just use a 128GB SanDisk USB drive for media storage, and OpenElec media center, which is designed for rugged "appliance" like use. In this last year, I had one single SD card failure, but I made a disk image after configuration, so I simply had to clone that image to a new SD card and go from there.
      My Pi, video signal amplifier (BOSS BVAM5), and a gutted USB car charger all sit under the center armrest, where I was able to steal some 12V and snug things in nicely. No case or anything, just some electrical tape for insulation on a few things. Took about 5 hours to get it all in and wired to a pair of cheap headrest monitors I bought on Amazon.
      Good luck!

      Nice! Can you tell me a bit more about the auto-resume script?
      Mine was a bit on a budget, and I have an '08 Prius, so no good spaces in the trunk (hatchback, and we carry a bunch of stuff routinely, so I didn't want it beat up). I only keep semi-recent stuff on mine, so no need for all of my library. I use MediaElch to organize it and dump NFO files to the directories, so I don't have to bring the whole thing in.
      There's definitely plenty of ways to skin this cat! :) I like the magnet quick-detach idea!

    It's rather pricey, but the advantage is that it is entirely self-contained.
    I think it would make a really good Retropie console.
    I have often wondered why nobody makes a console-style case with the ports broken out.
    So many people are using the Pi for Retropie that I think a dedicated console case would sell well.

  • @luisfelipe9765
    @luisfelipe9765 5 лет назад +1

    the case looks nice but you could run your pi3+ on an usb flash drive or hdd/ssd (hdd is limited to 2.5 inch drive unless is a powered hdd) you just need a micro sd card for the first boot to run a couple of commandson the terminal and then remove the sd card and install the pixel image into the usb drive. From then on you'll boot into the usb drive normally.

    Yeah, that's a cool case and all, I'm glad they make stuff like this... but after you spend that kinda money, you defeated the purpose of buying a $32 computer.

    • @OttosTheName
      @OttosTheName 7 лет назад +3

      45 usd if ur not american/british, 10 for charger, 10-20 for sd's if you're lucky enough to buy an sd card that's compatible on the first try*, so it was never really 32 usd for the vast majority. And this is still a cheap and practical solution. It's still way cheaper then a chromebook and you're not forced to use a shitty laptop keyboard and trackpad, so it can be practical if you travel a lot for instance and only need to check your email and do some word processing. Or if you're just wanna do some coding and tinkering while traveling.
      *personally I went through about 6 sd cards and 24 hours of troubleshooting, as a crappy sd card gives you a low power warning so you tend to replace adapters and adapter cables before sd cards. there is no support available apart from other users who also don't know how the thing is built

      98%+ of the time, we have no idea how much our PC motherboard costs. (I'm making exception for DIYers, but once they leave the scene, they lose track of what x86 boards casts, too) Would it somehow be better to spend $100 on a media center without knowing what board they use or what it costs?

      +ETA PRIME said it's a HAT. All HATs have a small I²C EEPROM containing config information which Raspbian uses to identify them and automatically load any necessary software. It may not work out of the box with other distributions.

    You don't need the SDCard in the Pi at all times to boot from the SSD. This is covered in the Pi Desktop user manual, also RaspberryPi.org covers how to set the bit on the Pi 3 to enable this to happen. If you've got a problem with booting from solely the SSD then the image probably hasn't been written to the SSD properly, you only need the SDCard on the first boot to set this bit.

    I wonder if there is any SDIO or MMC to SATA bridge chip. If so it may be a better idea to use the SDIO on the GPIO pins to access the SATA drive, or use a small ribbon cable that attaches to the microSD card slot on the Pi.

    • @ravagingwolverine
      @ravagingwolverine 7 лет назад

      That's a good question. I'd say it depends on what is important to you. The biggest problem that comes to mind with the Pi 3 is CPU power. But if it emulates the stuff you want, then that's not a big problem. I don't know the real limitations of the Pi 3 as I don't have one(I have Odroids) Or you can look to the more powerful boards like the Odroids(which do both Linux and Android), Tinker Board(also Linux and Android) or the x86 boards like Up Board or a Chinese Atom computer.
      I can tell you that emulation on Android using Retroarch works very well in my experience. I've used it on a tablet, on the Odroids, on a Mad Catz Mojo and a Razer Forge TV. I have run into issues getting things set up, such as it seeing controllers or the keyboard. I found that older versions(1.3.4, 1.3.6) were easier to set up than 1.4.x. I believe it wasn't recognizing my keyboard or something, but it's been a while. I also found that compatibility with wired USB controllers is not as good on Android. I have USB adapters that just don't work with Retroarch for Android 5 and up(they work on 4.4 and down for some reason). This is not an issue on Linux. If you don't plan to use wired controllers, then this is probably a non issue.

  • @exodous02
    @exodous02 7 лет назад

    yeah, I was going to say that is an awfully fast drive to be running off of USB 2, it is a waste. Maybe the pi4 will have USB 3 or C and a SSD will be worth it.

    This has to be the worst choice for an inexpensive desktop system. The pi really doesn't make a good every day computer regardless of what you add on to it, it was never meant to be. I actually tried to use a pi 3 as my main system for a week to see if it's viable and it drove me round the bend, especially when I just wanted to get some work done. The only positive is I spent less time on the computer! Sure the pi certainly has its uses, but for a an actual desktop computer on the cheap your a lot better off just getting a used PC. You can get those HP and Dell small form factor business systems such as the HP Elite 8200 for around £120, there's millions of them out there, since most organisations keep them for a few years then scrap them. I've found quite a few with an i5 ivy bridge cpu, 4gb ram and a 500gb - 1tb hard drive, and almost always have a Windows key stuck to the side. A lot of those corporate work station systems are built like tanks as well, so it will last a while. When you count the cost of the pi, this desktop kit, the MSATA drive, the micro SD card, and a power supply your really not that far off, and its just going to be so much more useful.

    Everyone's screaming how stupid this is... yes, but it's not element 14's fault. Pi just doesn't have any fast interfaces to attach storage to except the USB 2.0.
    What you really should be doing is to yell at the pi foundation that their product is shit and should have proper SATA or m.2 interface or in general fast interfaces like PCIe... but that would cost a lot of money and take up board real estate and isn't the reason why Pi was even made.
    There's a bunch of SBC's on the market that will allow you to use SATA or m.2 hard drives with proper fast interfaces... but they're lacking in software support since open source means: "if you're not going to do it, nobody else will..." and this is why Pi is so popular, because it has to software support and the community.
    Pick your poison.
