The same thing happened when Nike became the uniform supplier for MLB, too. Quality jerseys and jackets made by Majestic gave way to streamlined, boring, and shoddily-made products. Great video.
Part of this was because Nike had in 2023 for the 2024 season early on licensed the Swoosh out to Fanatics a company known for making cheap Knockoff gear that only lasts a single year of a few washes on its cheapest end but Nike set a price so low Fanatics had see-through crap in the white and only almost 100% solid in gray or other colors. Lots of MLB teams in 2024 pre-season had to resort back to old Nike pants until a month into the main season because of this issue telling players to double up on the top weairng a layer under the cheap tops that lasted 1--2 games if you did not wash them between games. Sure, Fanatics is okay for fans to wear, but is not ready for real on the field, court, or ice product for the players and NHL has Fanatics as the main/only sponsor for uniforms where after a year of uniforms ripping to pieces after every game, the NHL will have to find a new sponsor for the tops or players/teams might just resort to good Chinses knockoffs that are closer in color and sadly more durable then Fanatics. At least the MLB corrected the issue by paying Nike a bit more then needed and MLB head president of the league forcing them to make unforms themselves or contract is terminated so Nike they were not tempted to make uniforms by subcontracting out.
Starter and Reebok are goated for their contributions to 90s professional and collegian sports. Side Note Starter had some of the coldest NBA 90s warmups and it was stylized based on the superstar of such team. ie: 98 76ers warms ups were hip and cool to fit the personality of Iverson while the Bulls 98 were clean and classy to match the image of Jordan
Starter definitely had the 90’s on lock. The factory was in New Haven, CT and had a little factory store attached. Bulls, Raiders, Dolphins, Miami Hurricanes were all dope back then.

Samething happened to video games. Once EA got exclusive licensing to the NFL, the competition disappeared, and the game became dreadfully boring. I haven't played Madden in years. It's the same game every year with minor tweeks.
Great video! Don’t know how I stumbled onto it but it took me back. Getting a Starter Jacket or an Apex One jacket was not just a fashion statement, it was a status symbol. Your parents had some income if they got you one, and all the kids became jealous on the playground. Gangs not only would hurt or kill someone for a Starter jacket, schools had to ban the 49ers and Raiders jackets due to this. Most of us regular kids got the hats or the Champion stuff since they were more affordable. Half the dads in America had the Zubiez pants. A couple turning points for fashion. Gangster rap in the late 80s really helped popularize everyday people wearing jerseys to games and just randomly on the streets. Before NWA started wearing Raiders jerseys, the team maybe made a few million a year on jersey sales. After they hit the scene, it became a couple hundred million! The big catalyst for the modern Nike Monopoly was Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys. He wanted to have exclusive rights with Nike, and this would have been a problem due to the Cowboys brand presence. It would have given them an unfair advantage in the revenue department. So they switched to Nike and a few years later at Jones’ Hall of Fame acceptance as an executive, Nike had made him a one of a kind pair of sneakers made from the same fabric used to make the NFL hall of fame jackets. His shoes are one of kind and are probably the holy grail for shoe collectors. Probably a small token of thanks for pushing the envelope and making them even more money, even though their products kinda stink. I don’t remember when it happened, but probably in the 2000s. Coaches were allowed allowed to wear suits and other none branded apparel. I think when they went into the Reebok deal they banned that. One coach (I believe it was Mike Nolan of the 49ers) wanted to wear a suit and even asked Reebok to create a branded suit for him, but the NFL refused. It is sad we have become so “sleek” and “modern”, even with our HD televisions and such that can help make colors look more vivid. I guess you can just blame it on cold brutalism, which is just another thing that continues to harden and make people aloof in this modern world of ours.

@@sideline.archivewell, I’m just a Gen Xer that misses the old days of color and saturation. The 90s was during my teen and early college years and it seemed sports in general was doing wild things. The original Toronto Raptors uniform was wild, the kits most football clubs wore to the pitch (including the wild US World Cup kit), “Future Day” when the Major League Baseball teams wore these bizarre uniforms for a day and the fact some college basketball teams seemingly wore shorts that hit their ankles. University of Arkansas was the biggest offender in that category, wearing outlandishly long shorts because the head coach was getting sick of his players sagging all the time. Nowadays you got guys wearing short shorts again in basketball. 🤣 Anyway, I like collecting weird uniforms so that is why I enjoyed this video. The University of Illinois is debuting a “leather helmet” era football uniform, and if you dig fashion you need to check it out. Anyway, have a great day
Man what a great video. I remember as a kid being a die hard Buffalo Bills fan growing up I had to have a starter jacket and if you had one of those even though being in the 5th grade at the time you had all of the chicks hanging around you. Not gonna lie I own a ton of Bills Nike stuff from shirts to hoodies to several Allen jerseys, but I remember in 2019 I was tailgating at highmark stadium and decided to go into the Bills store and saw a sales associate opening some boxes and was pulling out some badass starter jackets from my childhood day ones and I immediately pulled out my season ticket just for the discount and bought two of them one for me and one for my buddy who was tailgating and they sold out before the poor guy could even put them up on display. Everyone in the Bills store went nuts over them and everyone was in line high fiving and hugging one another when they got there hands on one. It was insane.
Back when Pro line and starter and logo athletic made NFL gear (hats Shirts Jerseys Coats) was peak fashion. Nike made it dull and boring. That's why vintage sports wear goes for $$$$$ online.
Great video! Unfortunately though the style of the 80s/90s will never come back. We're in a "quantity over quality" era that we'll never leave. Now there's literally thousands of tshirt & jacket designs for each team, just because the manufacturing powerhouses can make whatever they want now. But while some outliers will buy the more crazy designs, the overwhelming majority will continue to buy the plain logo merch because it's safer to wear. I think when the NFL merch was just starting to take shape, the simple restriction on what was available meant that the overall look was more distinct and cohesive. We'll never have another distinctive era again, even if the 90s fashion is back in style
Also the exclusive contracts made it difficult for head coaches to wear suits if they wanted. The 49ers coach back in 2006 wanted to honor his dad and wear a suit like he did. But because of the exclusive contract, while he managed to be allowed to wear a suit, it had to be made by rebok and it looked like someone made their first suit with no prior experience.

It's amazing how monopolies end up destroying things. It happened in the music industry around 2000 when the courts allowed monopolies to buy up all the radio stations. Suddenly we went from underground movements like hip hop and grunge rock dictating trends organically to every form of popular music blending into one and the same. I used to play ice hockey growing up and back in the 1990s-early 2000s there were so many companies developing gear which helped advance the gear tech significantly over that time period from skates, sticks, protective equipment, goalie gear. Now all those small companies were all bought up by the 2 parent companies (name escapes me) that own either CCM or Bauer. Now everything seems bland and the exact same over the past decade and costs for basic equipment is outrageously expensive, like I'm talking $400 for a single hockey stick that can easily snap like a toothpick. Maybe you could try a video about that in the same vain as this one? Either way, great video - subscribed!
I grew up in the 90s. I watched NFL football religiously at that time and still do I would get Eastbay catalogs in the mail, and I would leaf through them like a madman. Many kids at my school had starter jackets.
The funny thing is how NFL Film did a video on RUclips how NFL teams pick their team's colors and designs and how they got to do it nearly a year in advance before they roll out these new designs. Yes, I know Nike has the contract with the NFL, but it really really interesting to see how NFL clubs choose their uniforms before going into the new season. The people that do it and how it gets done.
Part of the reason I wanted to do this was the massive rise of AI content. This is something I was really passionate about and I wanted to tell these stories the way I tell stories! So I’m glad that’s resonated with you. Thanks man
My dad was a lifelong vikings fan and died earlier this year. He had a lot of the old apparel, and I always questioned his sense of style choosing that over the more sleek stylish designs. Its really interesting to see thats probably just what was trendy when he was growing up
@sideline.archive regrettably I ended up donating a lot of it because I didn't think I'd ever wear it 🫤 I did hang onto a couple things but probably not as much as I should have
1:05 in the 90s as a kid you just about had to own a starter jacket, only a question of what team. i had michigan (wolverines) due to the color scheme, no other reason
I mean there are some vintage styles like that on sale for the consumer at least. I got two Shark tooth caps of the Giants and Jets (previous logo from 2019) from new era
I always mention this to my friends on how boring the NFL sideline gear is now. I always bring up how numerous companies in the 80s and 90s could produce NFL gear. The NFL gear sucks so bad now.
It doesn't need to be this way. But as the league makes more money - emphasis shifts from fan experience to corporate experience - since investment is what makes the league go round. But unfortunately, this negatively effects the aesthetic of the league.
Just had a look - and whilst they are cool Grateful Dead inspired tees - they're not licensed. No logos or team names appear on the shirts. Just "Carolina" of "Boston". Not Celtics or Panthers.
Good video ! I feel as though sports apparel across all pro sports are boring now a days. The designs of the 80s and 90s were just so cool, which is why I always prefer vintage gear over the new stuff. Also the quality of the materials are just better.
Thanks for explaining what never made sense to me. I’ve collected nutmeg millls, Salem, and logo 7 over the years. So much personality and detail to the styles of the 80s-90s. Didn’t know it was because of NAFTA shifting playing field.
It would be great to see the coaches in coat & tie again. They could wear a necktie of their team's color on game day, have their team's patch on a navy blazer, or wear a V neck sweater with their team's primary and secondary color (the secondary color being a trim on the V neckline). Even the 80's-90's apparel was more dignified looking than the polyester hoodies and athleisure look they wear.
@@treswright142 thank you brother - literally just uploaded two days ago and got it plenty more videos ready to release! So just glad it’s gaining a bit of traction!
This inspired me to raid my dad's closet and I scored a sweet 90's hornets starter jacket! It's in great shape too, I doubt it's been worn since the 90's.
90s were the peak for sports fashion in pretty much every sport. They understood drape and shape so much better. And they also had better designs and colours. Now everything is streamlined to fit thin and be dri fit for better sport performance, but it doesn’t look as nice.
I dont buy for a second that there is no appetite for fancy sportswear today. It's probably more a case of Nike doesnt have any reason in investing in creative designes since they hold the explusive rights and have to compete with noone. Plus the simpler the designes, the more they can appeal to all ages/groups without the need for different styles/designes
The same thing happened when Nike became the uniform supplier for MLB, too. Quality jerseys and jackets made by Majestic gave way to streamlined, boring, and shoddily-made products. Great video.

Just found this channel and what a treat such excellent editing and so thought through

You're probably right. But a man can dream.
Did this actually happen? Did Reebok make a suit? You gotta get me more info
Wow, incredible video man. I subscribed. Looking forward to see more of your stuff, dude.

@@redcomet6327 it’s 23:45 here in London and this comment made my day. Thanks for taking the time to comment brother. 49ers video is also up with a new vid coming next week! Appreciate you
Ok. This might be a short shallow thing to point out but I love that you’re British (assuming by the accent) and so invested in the NFL. Great production and entertainment too. Automatic sub from me
Thanks mate - correct, authentically British and a Bucs fan since 2005. Appreciate you coming on this journey with me! Come tap in on instagram too @sideline.archive
You're talking about things that long-time/diehard fans want to see. Please keep up what you're doing. As a 49er fan I loved your gold jacket video.
Would love to see you cover the NFL jersey branding over the years. We miss the old Reebok jerseys....So much better than the current Nike line.
I’m just glad there’s more people like me that love this stuff! I’m on it brother. Come join us on insta as we’ll start posting some short form content just like this!
Fantastic video - those flashy 90s outfits should never have gone out of style.
Thanks man! Come join us on instagram - you sound like you have good taste.
I’ve got some hockey videos ready to drop! The CCM / Bauer monopoly is interesting I’ll look into that. Thanks!

I grew up in the 90s. I watched NFL football religiously at that time and still do I would get Eastbay catalogs in the mail, and I would leaf through them like a madman. Many kids at my school had starter jackets.
The day Eastbay died was a sad day
What an OUTSTANDING video!
Appreciate you mate
This channel about to blow up. I thought these would have 200k+ damn bro good work

Brilliant video. Starter was massive in the 90s.
Appreciate you man thanks
Great production. You’ll have great success on this website brother 👏
Thank you 🙌
The funny thing is how NFL Film did a video on RUclips how NFL teams pick their team's colors and designs and how they got to do it nearly a year in advance before they roll out these new designs. Yes, I know Nike has the contract with the NFL, but it really really interesting to see how NFL clubs choose their uniforms before going into the new season. The people that do it and how it gets done.
90’s NFL was LIT 🔥
all the style, all the violence, Madden and NFL Blitz LFG!!!
NFL BLITZ! Wow what a reference
Subscribed, cool to be here for an early vid. Keep up work like this and you'll get acquired by The Athletic haha
Thanks for the sub bro. Just excited to build a community who love this stuff like I do!
Dig the vid. Keep it og and not AI. You have a good voice and speech patterns for this. Subscribed.
Part of the reason I wanted to do this was the massive rise of AI content. This is something I was really passionate about and I wanted to tell these stories the way I tell stories! So I’m glad that’s resonated with you. Thanks man
Super high quality video, keep it up
Appreciate it!
This video deserves more videos. Really well made.
Thanks for checking it out bro - appreciate you
My dad was a lifelong vikings fan and died earlier this year. He had a lot of the old apparel, and I always questioned his sense of style choosing that over the more sleek stylish designs. Its really interesting to see thats probably just what was trendy when he was growing up
@@Michael-yb7jh do you know which jacket he had? Was it the satin Starter? You should hang on to all that stuff!
@sideline.archive regrettably I ended up donating a lot of it because I didn't think I'd ever wear it 🫤 I did hang onto a couple things but probably not as much as I should have
Noooo! Ah well, always time to start a new collection. So cool to hear about your Dad’s insane wardrobe though. What a legend.
1:05 in the 90s as a kid you just about had to own a starter jacket, only a question of what team. i had michigan (wolverines) due to the color scheme, no other reason
Keep these videos coming. You’ve gained a new subscriber

Appreciate you man, thanks
I always mention this to my friends on how boring the NFL sideline gear is now. I always bring up how numerous companies in the 80s and 90s could produce NFL gear. The NFL gear sucks so bad now.
It doesn't need to be this way. But as the league makes more money - emphasis shifts from fan experience to corporate experience - since investment is what makes the league go round. But unfortunately, this negatively effects the aesthetic of the league.
Great video. Good job!
Thank you!
We need a full deep dive series
Ask and ye shall receive. Thanks for checking it out bro.
This video is very good, thank you for creating great info
I had the apex cowboys jacket with the stars on the shoulders. it was so cool!
I own the one of the Cowboys lamp shown at 3:15. Picked it up as a garage sale for $1
Haha amazing. What a steal
From the man that inspired the JMB. Content as good as his fashion choice.
Florida Gators sideline fashion series…?
I sub'd. great production!
Thanks! Great to have someone else who loves this niche stuff like I do.
Not only the merchandise but the official jerseys as well, more and more I find myself missing and preferring the Reebok uniforms.
Some smaller companies have been getting licenses from the NFL to make graphic tees and sweatshirts. Dead Threads is a good example.
Just had a look - and whilst they are cool Grateful Dead inspired tees - they're not licensed. No logos or team names appear on the shirts. Just "Carolina" of "Boston". Not Celtics or Panthers.
Still got my champion Bills hoodie. Got that puffy throw back style
@@TOMMYDACOMMIE incredible.
Good video ! I feel as though sports apparel across all pro sports are boring now a days. The designs of the 80s and 90s were just so cool, which is why I always prefer vintage gear over the new stuff. Also the quality of the materials are just better.
Incredible vid
@@gamers13014 thanks for watching!
Im wearing a Houston Oiler Starter jacket while watching this.
Ain’t no way… The blue satin bomber?!
Thanks for explaining what never made sense to me. I’ve collected nutmeg millls, Salem, and logo 7 over the years. So much personality and detail to the styles of the 80s-90s. Didn’t know it was because of NAFTA shifting playing field.
I collect nutmeg and Salem too! Come join us on instagram @sideline.archive - it’s gonna be right up your street when we launch next week
This is such a well made video
keep up the work!
Thanks bro glad you enjoyed. Another video dropping soon so stay locked 🔒
Absolutely insane content as ever. Now please find me a Bucs creamsicle sharktooth.
I need the splash!
An excellent take from the savvy sartorialist. Would expect nothing less
Sick channel. I'll watch many more...
Glad to have you on board bro. New video dropping soon!

This inspired me to raid my dad's closet and I scored a sweet 90's hornets starter jacket!
It's in great shape too, I doubt it's been worn since the 90's.

Unfortunately you’re absolutely right. Thanks dude! Hit sub and come follow on instagram if this is your kind of thing.
90s were the peak for sports fashion in pretty much every sport. They understood drape and shape so much better. And they also had better designs and colours. Now everything is streamlined to fit thin and be dri fit for better sport performance, but it doesn’t look as nice.
Skip Bayless with the drip history lesson!

You got it 👍
I dont buy for a second that there is no appetite for fancy sportswear today. It's probably more a case of Nike doesnt have any reason in investing in creative designes since they hold the explusive rights and have to compete with noone.
Plus the simpler the designes, the more they can appeal to all ages/groups without the need for different styles/designes
It's all about the money at the end of the day. If it's easy to churn out simple designs and doesn't affect the bottom line - that's what they'll do!
