Nike as a company is dumb af nowadays. Cashgrabs are not bad for a company as long as it comes with creativity. For example: Nike would make a lot of money just by bringing back 90s iconic designs as City editions or Throwback jerseys. Sixers Black jersey from the Iverson era, Jazz's purple mountain jersey, Raptors purple jersey with the raptor or the 00's more stylized jerseys, Hornets Muggsy era jerseys, Warriors or Bucks 00's rebranding era, and many more. When they try to do a throwback they don't go all in and end up giving a shy version of what could otherwise be a great jersey that honours other NBA eras or even ABA era.

One thing you said made a lot of sense in regards to modern choices in design, and was a solid point. The 90s designs were a reflection of a shared cultural movement, which is honestly something kids don’t have today. Their influences these days are so spread out that these minimalist designs really are the best way to appeal to them. It sucks, but it’s true.

It's funny to see Gen Z call 90s designs beloved now. I remember when people hated those jerseys back in the day and called the Rockets, Raptors or Hawks jerseys "pyjamas" and wanted the return of more classic or plain designs. You would never see rap stars in those jerseys - Bulls, Lakers, Heat, Hornets or Celtics were much more popular and they were extremely traditional. That's how we got the beloved Raptors redesign in 2000, Hawks soon after and Rockets as well (although they changed it to the Chinese design which also wasn't liked but it was considered an improvement nonetheless)

  • @Rodanguirus
    @Rodanguirus Месяц назад +38

The upholding of the Pistons teal jerseys as this beloved throwback is so funny to me, as a '90s kid who grew up in Michigan. This overwhelming nostalgia and positivity was there when the team brought them back as a throwback a couple years ago, too. It's hard to convey how HATED those were by Pistons fans at the time, to the point where it's kind of swept under the rug how the horsehead was still the primary logo when they won the 2004 title (they were back to the red and blue color scheme by then, which made it more palatable, I suppose).
And it wasn't just the Detroit jerseys getting hate. The '90s' obsession with teal and cartoonish animals was frequently bashed back in the day (not even just NBA...kids who watched the movies may have liked the Mighty Ducks jerseys, but hockey fans were less receptive). If RUclips were around then, there most definitely would have been videos about (then) modern jerseys being a disgrace.

@@andresdelportillo9917 Hornets were definitely trendsetters, (I definitely saw a ton of my fellow kids with Hornets merch in '90s Michigan). I definitely didn't mean my comments to be universal...things like the NFL's Panthers and Jags, and the NHL's Sharks also went over decently well. But things like the Vancouver Grizzlies and the "demonic bison head" Buffalo Sabres '90s logos were other "cartoony animals and/or teal" logos that got tons of hate back in the day, and were frequently used as examples of why jersey/logo design was going downhill at the time (and both are now used as positive examples of all the "personality" jerseys used to have). I mean, if people like them, that's great. The switch-up is just funny to me.

Lakers should wear gold or white at home and purple and gold accents (no black) on the road. Example is Utah: bring back the 90’s look but make the color from the mountains up a purple gradient into black, make the font classic but modernize clean. This makes every part of the jersey pop out

Courts have got out of hand.
Cant help but to think they are distracting as hell to players.
Perhaps not but sure is way too much going on visually for my liking.

Its also worth to note why modern graphic design is minimalist: technology. Since a lot of our information arrived to us by technology like smartphones, branding should then be recognizable on a 7" screen. Sometimes even in monochrome. Hence, brands went for a minimal and streamlined look.

I prefer buying retro jerseys or retro designs over anything of the “current day” look.
Having retro designs and players names are timeless. With players moving so often now it’s not worth the investment in current players jerseys

The best jersey of all time is the 90s Raptors fits. Those massive logos and loud colors will never not be the best of the best, period. The OG Grizzlies second, then the Sonics, Suns, Pistons and Hawks.
The teams who've overall had the worst designs of all time is easily Dallas at #1, and they're followed closely by New Jersey/Brooklyn and the Lakers in my opinion. New Jersey had a horrid color scheme, and the designs were either too minimalist or completely ruined by the color scheme and font. The oversimplified branding definitely doesn't help. Nets. Come on people. The Lakers again it is refusal to go away from their "iconic" exceedingly simple designs, too. And Dallas? Same problem as the latter. Their historic jerseys are ungodly ugly.
As for the modern Nike era jerseys that most people hate, but I love, is Utah's Mesa jerseys and Dallas' graffiti looking Mavs jerseys (the blue and electric green ones). LOVE both of those a lot.
And for the opposite way around, the current Blazers alts (the normal red alts) are terrible in my opinion. The best of the best was the PDX Carpet City Edition however. I still adore those. That color scheme and the slight pattern of the carpet come together so perfectly. Just *_chef's kiss_*
Finally, the Christmas Jerseys (aka, sleeved threads) are abominations and should be nuked with a tsar bomba.
If Portland adds a new extra jersey this season, it should be a Bill Walton Tye Dye. A proper brightly colored Bill Walton tye dye shirt color, preferably the same tye dye design we got on our Bill Walton patches this season, using the Retro Blazers font on it from when he played for us. How freaking epic would that look!! That has to be done, even if it is just for fans and merch sales. Give us that jersey, and it'll be the first jersey I'll buy in my life with my own money.

My issue with a lot of the teams using minimalist designs are that several of them went to using retro based logos, but they made the colors dull along with simplifying the designs. The cavs coulda easily just went back with the original "wine and gold" design they used for Lebrons rookie year, which had FIRE navy alternates. Or back to the baby blue/black/orange. The nuggets are mixing throwback colors (royal blue, yellow) with the 00s colors (navy, red) while using the rainbow city design. The nets introduced alternates based on the Dr J jerseys but with the bland black and white color scheme instead of just going back to those NY Nets designs but using the NJ colorway (red, navy, gray). What was the point of the raptors just switching their colors to black and red? why get rid of the purple? Even the 6ers went back to a retro based jersey design/colorway. A lot of the teams would do well with just using a slightly modernized retro logo/design and not being scared of having 3-5 colors in the palette. Does anyone remember when the Heat had yellow alternates and instead of adding any other of the teams colors to it, they just made them yellow and black, which made them look like Pacers jerseys? Thats the dumb shit that annoys me.
The 75th anniversary city jerseys were some of the best jerseys and I wish some of the teams would just do like the Suns and keep using the same jersey where the design was slightly altered for like 3 years. Most of the city jerseys are uninspired. I remember having a nike rewind jersey and that line used throwback uniforms with the modern colors. That would be way more interesting than what they're doing now.
They also need to stop trying to get rid of the idea of the home/away jerseys. Its so dumb watching a home team wear their away jersey and the away team wearing their home. If it aint broke, dont fix it!

    Very interesting video.
I could answer your title without even seeing the video:
From the perspective of an old fart, yes. Jerseys were so much more interesting in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. They're cartoonish by the minimalist aesthetic of the 2020s, but I still prefer the 1990s Cavs jerseys to the 2010s ones.
Also, wool was because (a) it's a winter sport that was first popular in Canada and cold Northeastern cities and (b) textiles needed to catch up. Synthetics weren't widespread in the first half of the last century.
Edit #1 - Also, why is it that so many teams have some shade of blue? There are fewer greens, relatively few reds, and not enough of any other color.

They get a break for the Jazz from me.? They came up with their own, but they wanted to be just black and white. The league stepped in and basically said no more black and white teams, we already have San Antonio and Brooklyn. So they chose to throw in that yellow and go minimalist as FU response. Source: I have a friend that works for them. Trust me. 😂

I one with their minimalism styles. i do not like them, but whatever. I guess all brands are going with this corpo clean designs, but with what i got a massive issue is with mess up with the colors of the franchises.
Like. Before Nike you can turn on the TV and you instantly knew who were playing and where they were playing. White for local, color for visitors and you can instantly associate which team is from which city with their colors.
    Power blue: Denver
    Blue and Orange: Knicks
    Red on Black: Portland
    Black on red: Chicago
    Red on Blue: Detroit
    Blue and Yellow: Pacers
    Purple and Black: Kings
And so much more. You didn't even knew to listen to the broadcast to visually identify which teams were playing the game, but know is goddamn impossible to do that because we teams wearing color that are nowhere near to the colors or identity of the colors.
We got Dallas wearing solid green and not accent green???. Orlando wearing orange and black???? Jazz running a color scheme that is pretty much the old pacers????,Cleaveland using powder blue? Bulls wearing white and other color that isn't red? Those ugly ass SAS blue or green or whatever that color was,, Detroit wearing damn green????. Way too many teams got a black color jersey too.
Is like NIke walk up and just decided to kick the teams on the balls and yell "your pass? your colors? Don't exist. You rebranding all your teams because we want to" and NBA teams are just forced to say "Ok...NBA is the boss we do what they want". Another issue is that they remake jersey WAAAAAAAAAAAAY TO OFTEN giving them no time to stick with the audiences to get a identity with the team and fanbase either. You can't like a jersey because in 8 months they gonna be throwing it into the trash bin.
    I prefer the old way
    Home: Whites
    Away: Color
Alternative Home: White with 3rd color of the team
    Alternative Visitor: 2nd color
Then you got the special day jersey like MLK,Green day, Latino week,Christmas and more special days.
Adam Silvers is solo killing this league
