Haha! What a great story. Same as here in the UK. It seemed like the Bulls and Hornets invaded in the early 90s. Bulls because of Jordan, and Hornets for the colorway. Weirdly the Magic also featured heavily over here - probably because of families going on holiday to Disney and coming back with Magic gear.

Like these remote places where they send the Finals losers merch. In Europe we thought that the Hornets were some kind of power house, tbh at some point they became competitive.
While you mention him in passing, I believe Larry Johnson playing for Charlotte was very important in the rise in popularity of Hornets gear. He was an immensely popular college player who won a national title for UNLV, which was the coolest team at the time and seen almost like antiheroes (think college basketball's version of the Raiders). Johnson also had a series of popular shoe commercials where he would dress up like an old lady and school people on the court. I think all us young people were aware of Charlotte's unique uniforms, but it was Larry Johnson in 1991-92 who made the gear cool and a must-have.
True. While the uniforms & colors made the team popular, all trends go away unless there's a story to keep carrying it. The first 4 years it was about the style. The next 4 years it was about the characters (Mugsey, Dell, LJ, Zo)
I'm from Brazil, and here Hornet's fever was huge too. The NBA was hyped here at the time because of Jordan and the Bulls, however, just Hornets merchandise was so popular as Bulls or more. Not because of the team, but the colors and the Hornet were so awesome that it was a dream of everyone buying a Hornet's cap or a jacket.
I'm from Spain, and as a kid, the first NBA product I owned was a Hornets microbasketball basket. Those uniforms and logo are a total design masterpiece.
Love the fact you keep taking me down memory lane. The Charlotte uni definitely provoked some different ideas in the 90s. The Suns had their iconic sunburst, the Sonics orange and green rebrand, and the one team you forgot was the Arizona Diamondbacks, who originally went purple and teal with their color scheme before they moved to “Sedona” red. I kinda wish Shaquille O’Neal hadn’t left Orlando and the Hornets hadn’t gotten beaten down with injuries. We were definitely looking at a major southern revolution in the east with the Heat, Magic and Hornets looking like long time contenders. Anyway, another great video!

They wore teal or purple Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning or Muggsy Bogues jerseys when it was hot and Hornets Starter jackets when it was cold.

I lived near Charlotte for nearly 5yrs in the early to mid 90's. The Hornets were big. I've seen other kids at Junior High and High school wear their jersey. I also watched the Panthers stadium being built. The black panther statues in front of the stadium. Believe it or not. I was thinking to myself. Why are they building a stadium there? I later found out it was for the Panthers and you would think those statues in front of the stadium would've given it away. I was young and still getting acquainted with that area. I was born in Charlotte in '71, so I was in high school when the announcement was made that Charlotte got an NBA franchise. The uniforms were not only a huge influence on fashion, but there was an explosion of teal-colored cars driving around Charlotte as well as Honda offered their newest Civic in Teal; don't know if it was nation-wide or just specific to the area. When I left NC in '91 for Air Force basic training in Texas, I was wearing purple and white Hornets sweatpants and a teal Hornets t-shirt. At my first duty station, Grissom AFB, IN, I bought a Hornets jacket that had the faux leather sleeves at the mall in Kokomo for $175, which was not small change in 1992 and the most money I had ever spent on any clothing item. The 90s "Teal Takeover" was huge - thought of a couple more immediately and decided to see how many I could find... 1994 - the NHL introduced teal (vs. purple, with black, white, and silver) jerseys for the All-Star Game and used them for 4 seasons. 1995 - the Quebec Nordiques unveiled a teal & purple rebrand in 1995 but moved to Colorado before it was ever worn, while the NY Islanders successfully but temporarily added teal with the infamous "Fish Sticks" rebrand that same summer. 1996 - The NBA used teal for the All Star Game (in San Antonio*) before the Pistons and Jazz both added teal with rebrands that summer. 1998 - Diamondbacks and Devil Rays debuted in 1998 with teal in their branding. Outside the "Big 4," the Toronto Argonauts (CFL) rebrand in 1995, and the LA Galaxy (MLS) debuted 1996 are other notable examples. *The most interesting case is probably the San Antonio Spurs, who played dabbled in both ends of the 90s Hornets-Raiders branding spectrum - introducing teal (and and orange and PINK!) to their logo and auxiliary branding in 1989, then continuing to wear black, white, and silver uniforms without a speck of colour throughout the entirety of the most colourful decade in sports history...
I moved to Charlotte three years ago and was never an NBA fan. But Hugo and the Hornets’ fantastic looks won me over. I love them now. They’re terrible on the court and are rarely mentioned for anything positive so I love seeing them mentioned in a good way. Great video!
I grew up in Massachusetts in the 80s & 90s. There was always someone around with that winter pull over Starter jacket with the Hornets logo. Will never forget that color.
The 90s Hornets, With Larry Johnson, Mugsy Bogus and Alonzo Mourning, the 90s Sonics with Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp, The 90s Mavericks with Jim Jackson, Jason kidd and Jamal Mashburn and the 90s Magic teams with Shaq, Penny, Nick Anderson Dennis Scott we're all very cool at one time or another. As a 12 year old in the mid 90s these we're the hip and cool teams that every basketball fan loved.
The teal trend also made it's way into Australian sports. When South Australian team Port Adelaide entered the AFL in 1997, their black & white uniform conflicted with an existing team, so teal became a part of their team brand. I knew teal was kind of a 90's thing, but I never connected the dots to Charlotte.
I had the later starter jacket the one with hugo on the front pullover pocket flap, I still have that jacket. During the 90's you could find me in my 9ers gear or the hornets pullover. I grew up as far away from NC as any one in the lower 48 as I was raised in washington.

So, Hornets since '94 largely due to the pinstripes and not wanting to be a glory fan of the Bulls, went to New Orleans on holiday in '99 and loved it, then wouldn't you know a few years later the Hornets get relocated to New Orleans, so it seemed like fate and I stuck with them in NOLA as the Hornets then Pelicans ever since....this will be my 31st year following the NBA!
great video. i am a buffalo native who moved to pittsburgh. ive always been fascinated with how the city rallies around "black & yellow" I always felt this was a barrier in Buffalo with the Bills/ Sabres having different colors.
I remember being a kid in the early 90s. I was really digging that Hornets color, and yes its true, a lot of kids were rocking the merchandise. And the popularity of the Hornets grew even bigger when the had Larry Johnson, Muggsy Bogues, and Alonzo Mourning playing together. I was a huge Larry JOhnson fan that time.

I don't think it can be overstated how widespread across the country these iconic looks were, especially if your hometown team wasn't great. Growing up in the 90's near Dallas, when we played swimming pool basketball, we weren't Derek Harper and Terry Davis. We didn't know who the hell they were. We were Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippin, Alonzo Mourning and Larry Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal and Penny Hardaway.
I love reminiscing on the late 80s -early 90s Hornets. It just makes me grin and have a warm feeling where my heart used to reside😂.... Kelly Tripuka.... Rex Chapman.... Kendal Gill...David Wingate..😊😊😊 See what I mean! Try naming one to see yourself
I grew up in Idaho 80s/90s, couple of kids would wear Hornets coats and hats. I would wear UNC and Michigan stuff. I always played with the hornets in NBA Jam in the arcade. I live in Raleigh now, and lived in Columbus, OH for 9 years, WAZZU and OSU are the teams I have supported most of my adult life.
I've ALWAYS thought that the Hornets have the coolest colors in the NBA. I didn't know about the history behind the classic uniform, yet I'm not surprised by any of it. Amazing video.👍

I was a teenager in Charlotte when the Hornets were born. i remember the general response here to the uniforms was at least slightly negative, but people were too excited to have a team to really mind. Like with a lot of things new and innovative, folks don't always like them at first glance but warm up eventually to them.
My uncle took me to that Bulls/Hornets game. I didnt get to see the Hornets much back then but I'm glad that was one of em. Half my wardrobe was Hornets gear, the other half Redskins gear.
Wow talk about a blast from the past. I had forgotten about this but yeah even here in Southern California during that time I remember seeing a lot of those being worn in school and elsewhere.
Hah, nice. I've been here my whole life since 85'. I wasn't old enough to remember the beginning, but old enough to see them at the old coliseum. I remember when the panthers came to town too.
90's had the best designs. The blazers, the sonics, the hornets, the raptors, just so much more interesting than what we have today.
I’d argue the early 2000’s were the last of the truly wild designs. The 90’s was all about it but those iconic jerseys were just the beginning.

Everything had that 'X Game' style. ❤
This is a great video bro, and I learned a lot. Keep doing your thing
Appreciate it, more coming soon!
5:35 uptown/downtown Charlotte... Lol it's like you've been there bro. Couldn't describe that city better- back then at least.
This is absolutely my area of expertise and published research and you nailed it.
Really! Oh I'm so glad haha. Thanks for the continued support.
I moved to Charlotte three years ago and was never an NBA fan. But Hugo and the Hornets’ fantastic looks won me over. I love them now. They’re terrible on the court and are rarely mentioned for anything positive so I love seeing them mentioned in a good way. Great video!
Thanks so much! Someone’s gotta love em!
Awesome job! Loved this colourway as a kid!
Thanks Jimbo!
I grew up in Massachusetts in the 80s & 90s. There was always someone around with that winter pull over Starter jacket with the Hornets logo. Will never forget that color.
It was EVERYWHERE. Thanks for tapping in brother. See you for the next vid!
Great video. Those were some of the best uniforms. Every kid in my class who enjoyed the nba had some form of hornets apparel in the 90s.
Yep, that was the absolute peak for NBA fashion.
The Hornets should bring back the hugo logo like how the Hawks brought back an updated pacman / Hawk logo

Beautiful vid.just subscribed.luv ur vids!
Appreciate you BenBro! Next one coming soon.
Thats so interesting! This teal phenomenon is truly going global. This is the first example of it hitting down under though! Thanks for the info.
I had the later starter jacket the one with hugo on the front pullover pocket flap, I still have that jacket. During the 90's you could find me in my 9ers gear or the hornets pullover. I grew up as far away from NC as any one in the lower 48 as I was raised in washington.
You were the guy at school who had it! I believe you’re talking about the Starter Rocket Jacket. Do you still have it? Absolutely fire. 🔥
@@sideline.archive Yeah that's the one, and yes I still got it saw it over christmas at my parents place. Fun fact I got into 2 fights with kids who tried stealing that jacket after the second fight my mom made me get a different one to wear to school.
Once again , great video and the writing in particular I thought was amazing this video!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the deep dive into this iconic look.
Amazing video, can remember as a kid the appeal to the mighty ducks jersey after watching the movies. Didn’t know Charlotte and Alexander Julian started it all ! Makes sense, those jersey are one of the best ever, glad they paid them homage with their new one
Great video, thanks man
@@amobz23 thank YOU for watching dude. Appreciate it!
LJ was my first jersey ever in 94 and I've followed the team since to NOLA....Nice vid mate...👍🏀🇬🇧
That's interesting! So you only became a fan when they moved to NOLA? Were they still the hornets at that point or has it been Pels all the way?
So, Hornets since '94 largely due to the pinstripes and not wanting to be a glory fan of the Bulls, went to New Orleans on holiday in '99 and loved it, then wouldn't you know a few years later the Hornets get relocated to New Orleans, so it seemed like fate and I stuck with them in NOLA as the Hornets then Pelicans ever since....this will be my 31st year following the NBA!
@@The_English_Pels_Fan Awesome! I'm a die hard Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan and have much the same story!
The Grand Ma-Ma Larry Johnson commercials helped.
Great video 👏🏾 Keep them coming!
More to come!
Everyone and their grandma had a teal something. Perfect video to watch while grabbing dinner.
Thank bro! The kind of video I aspire to make!
great video. i am a buffalo native who moved to pittsburgh. ive always been fascinated with how the city rallies around "black & yellow" I always felt this was a barrier in Buffalo with the Bills/ Sabres having different colors.
I’m trying to think of other sports cities who have a uniform color for their sports teams …
Thank you for a great video that took me down memory lane!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾🙏🏾🎊
Glad you enjoyed it. Hit sub to follow along!
GrandMama herself!
Man these videos are just unreal! Keep them coming because im still waiting for that Canucks jersey history video 😂 easily my favourite creator on RUclips
Flying Skate! Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten. I’d like to imagine I’m talking to Todd Bertuzzi’s burner.
Super cool video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I still have my #2 Larry Johnson jersey....love it
I love reminiscing on the late 80s -early 90s Hornets. It just makes me grin and have a warm feeling where my heart used to reside😂.... Kelly Tripuka.... Rex Chapman.... Kendal Gill...David Wingate..😊😊😊 See what I mean!
Try naming one to see yourself
That’s the power of Nostalgia!
That jacket is so iconic 😏🔥
this channel rules!!...also I had a #2 Larry Johnson hornets jersey in the late 90s
I think everybody had some kind of hornets merch!! Appreciate you bro thanks. See you for the next one.
Back the 90s, having an Hornets jersey and or starter jacket at school, u made it.. them shits were serious
As someone from Charlotte, the Hornets is the only thing that keeps us going.
Some of my favorite jerseys of all time
Absolutely same!
had a purple champion larry johnson jersey in 4th grade.
I had the black 93 starter pull over with the stripes on the right arm. was so tight. Had the purple Larry Johnson jersey as well.
I've ALWAYS thought that the Hornets have the coolest colors in the NBA. I didn't know about the history behind the classic uniform, yet I'm not surprised by any of it. Amazing video.👍
Glad you liked it! They are truly iconic.
Really great video, HEAVILY inspired by Secret Base though
Nothing wrong with that! Best sports videos on YT imo
Great video
Hornets gear was everywhere when I was a kid in Virginia. Plus they had local guys Zo and J.R. Reid.
So glad you mentioned nascar I'm from Milwaukee Wisconsin USA born 1990 I never cared for basketball yet love nascar and I'll never forget hornets winter jackets were all I seen during the 90s and now I know why thank your for this video such a deep dive trip you really hit the nail on the head with this video
Thanks so much! I'm planning on looking into the Nascar fashion of the 90s! With The Intimidator and The Rainbow Racer
@sideline.archive oh that's gonna be a good one because that was such a clash and as much as I hated Gordon (untill his last year go figure) I always felt so bad for those dale sr fans roasting in the hot sun with all that black new subcriber bell on. I seen a prior video about raider swag culture and this video popped up
I love this thank you for talking about the throwback hornet's
My pleasure - glad you enjoyed!
Grew up in Boston and I had that same exact Starter jacket in the early 90s lol. Yeah, Charlotte's jerseys were sick af.
Great video still waiting on that nwa white Sox tribute
I haven't forgotten - got an incredible story on the White Sox locked and loaded. Thanks for the continued support.
I was a teenager in Charlotte when the Hornets were born. i remember the general response here to the uniforms was at least slightly negative, but people were too excited to have a team to really mind. Like with a lot of things new and innovative, folks don't always like them at first glance but warm up eventually to them.
They really defined Charlotte as a sports town and put them on the map. A style legacy that still endures today!
Larry Johnson put Charlotte on the map big time , he even had the #1 selling jersey with Jordan active on the bulls roster at the time
LJ the number one Hornets jersey you find in vintage stores over here. So clean. I'de give my right arm to find a Mugsy Bogues.
Only people not from Charlotte say uptown real Charlotte folk know
Unfortunately, I'm about as far from Charlotte as you can get!
I loved the old purple Jazz jersey with the blue mountains
Absolutely fire. The Stockton Malone era.
Everyone in the 90s knew someone with that jacket, esp if you lived in Charlotte
Even in the UK and europe we had it!
My uncle took me to that Bulls/Hornets game. I didnt get to see the Hornets much back then but I'm glad that was one of em. Half my wardrobe was Hornets gear, the other half Redskins gear.
The Bulls/Hornets game was a legendary matchup. You were the for the Rambis buzzer beater! Crazy.
Wow talk about a blast from the past. I had forgotten about this but yeah even here in Southern California during that time I remember seeing a lot of those being worn in school and elsewhere.
Hornets teal had no right being in California schools - but it swept the nation. Crazy.
I always admired their Jersey colorway ❤
lets gooo. This might be the first Hornets video ever made
Gold as ever! Charlotte Hornets were my first NBA team. Then Seattle Sonics. Now Knicks. Surely they can’t move
@@ricko6964 hahahah. The Salt Lake Knicks incoming.
I didn't even like sports as a kid but I loved this team's aesthetics
They transcended sports. The teal truly took over the culture.
Hah, nice. I've been here my whole life since 85'. I wasn't old enough to remember the beginning, but old enough to see them at the old coliseum. I remember when the panthers came to town too.
Would have killed to be there for some of their opening games at the old Coliseum.
@@sideline.archive the crowd was electric that's for sure
Even 7-12 year old Lewis Hamilton was rocking it in a 90s Blue Peter episode lool
