Nah, the late 90's had some absolutely brutally bad uniform changes. Anyone with any understanding of graphic design will tell how awful most of the changes were. Uniforms traditionally tried to say a lot with very little, then all of a sudden it's like owners hired their 7 year old grandkids to design uniforms. Tacky.

In 1994, the Devils, despite being a championship caliber team were still struggling to connect with their fan base. They were third in the market behind the Islanders even while being in the conference final in 1994 and and winning the cup in 1995. They were actually planning a move to Nashville while winning that cup. Imagine going through all four rounds of the playoffs and not even trying to sell season plans for the following year. Fortunately for Devils fans the move fell through. And of course the Devils were run in a super traditional top down way by Lou Lamerillo, who was not just in charge of hockey ops, he was in charge of everything from the hot dogs to the arena staff, to building the team. And he was also in charge of the almost non existent marketing. But they had a classic logo crest that has remained exactly the same since it debuted in 1982. Of course...where did Lamerillo end up? Correct! The “original original” Canadian Satin. Send me the tag and I’ll dig through all the info I have for it. With the traditional Long Island logo? Block color, orange white blue?
No need to bring Wayne Gretzky into this, he was nowhere near the 1994 Stanley Cup. As a Canucks and Gretzky fan I wouldn't have been as disappointed in Game 7. I didn't riot as I had left Vancouver for a job in Winnipeg during Round 2 but I get it, that was heartbreaking. Mark Messier wasn't very well liked in Vancouver, Wayne had a lot of fans there. Wayne was a Ranger in 1996 after a short stint in St. Louis. Mark Messier, if he wasn't already the most hated man in Vancouver when he became the Canucks Captain in 1997 he certainly was by the time his horrible 4 years of no-playoffs tenure in the city was over. Missing the playoffs during a rebuild is forgivable, it happens to every team, but he took Wayne Maki's #11 to wear himself, Wayne died of brain cancer in 1974 and the Canucks unofficially retired his jersey, that was a sh!tty move, very disrespectful and unprofessional. If you were living in Vancouver during Messier's run as a Canuck you would see quite a few unhappy fans wearing #11 Canuck jerseys with "MAKI" on them instead of "MESSIER", my buddy Rob had one.
Pickett, Maloney, Milbury, Spano, Milstein, Gluckstern and the teams terrible arena deal killed the dynasty. There was hope when Charles Wang and Sanjay Kumar bought the team, but that faded when they kept Milbury as GM. As far as changing the jersey, it was a desperate move to change their image. The problem is, the old Blue and Orange was such an icon, the oilers copied it.
I always thought that logo was awesome -- they just should have kept and incorporated the original bold Islanders colors (blue instead of turquoise, Islanders orange instead of that muted orange) and made the lines on the jerseys straight instead of that dorky wavy style.
It was a masterpiece compared to the Anaheim Michelin Man jerseys. They had to get rid of them because the players refused to wear them anymore. To my knowledge it's the only time that has happened.
@@sideline.archive google image Anaheim Mighty Ducks Wild Wing jersey. You will be floored, and I'm dead serious. I think they wore it like 3 times and then the players refused to wear it any longer.
I feel like I'm in the minority saying that I genuinely always liked those logos (Lighthouse secondary logo was amazing and should have stayed). I've always hated their traditional logo, personally. That said, the similarity with the Fish Stick brand is pretty unfortunate though.
Folks who defend this garbage could use an introductory course on graphic design. When it comes to both logos and uniforms, you should strive to emphasize certain colors and details but make sure not to overdo anything to the point that the eye will be overwhelmed. And the design should have well balanced colors and geometry. The Islanders new look violated of basic principle of a good look. The colors and shapes are not proportioned well, and suddenly there's a stupid new logo apparently designed by a child or a stoned teen dominating the jersey.
It’s a very 90’s logo and even though I’m a Rangers fan, I actually like it better then the classic logo. Probably because I’m a Rangers fan. And probably because it was the logo in the NHL ‘96 game for snes!
As a logo, the "Fisherman" logo mabey is not better then the original "Islanders" logo BUT-BUT what is for sure, the wave jerseys WAS and STILL are the BEST they have ever worn! The Islanders logo looks good but the jerseys are just SO BORING to look at. They have had some interesting jerseys like the black/silver one, but overall kept the same boring one. Crying out loud, the reverse retro jerseys have not even been a "trying" case. If Islanders had any sence today, they would easily do the 3 following; 1. Start to use the wave jerseys again like in 1996-1998 both home and road including the 2nd logo, the "lighthouse" as shoulder logos. 2. Bring back the Fisherman logo and jerseys as 3rd jersey - and as shoulder logo have the classic "Islanders" logo there. 3. Never use the old jerseys agan. Let them go. The 80's was long ago and they are completely out-dated, boring, creative lacking and inspire nothing.
Love the lighthouse logo. And I partially agree - but it’s so difficult to say goodbye to a jersey that has so much history attached to it. It feels like an original 6 jersey at this point - you can’t touch it! Look what happened when they tried!
Isn't he the guy that refused to player for the Islanders when he was traded there? Played a couple of uninterested shifts and then was barred from the team. I totally agree the dynasty was long dead - but the logo fiasco made people forget all about it. The only thing people would talk about was fish sticks!
@@sideline.archiveyes muller never wanted to be traded to isles and sulked the whole time until he was benched then traded to leafs. fishsticks represent the beginning od the failed milbury era.
@@stevenbauer4799 I'd say you're right. But changing the logo from the iconic Long Island crest distanced themselves from memories of that golden era - which was all they had at that point. Especially with Milbury trading away all their best players.

@@sideline.archive that one was a classic for sure. But then there are the flames, the oilers 3rd, burger kings, blues, so so many. It was like every team decided to update their look (except for a few) and then later went back to their original look. Nearly all of them.
Also, the sports gear companies started telling team owners that they wanted to try "bold" and "innovative" designs, most of which have aged like milk.

As a random, if the reverse retro was orange I would have bought one
I always thought that logo was awesome -- they just should have kept and incorporated the original bold Islanders colors (blue instead of turquoise, Islanders orange instead of that muted orange) and made the lines on the jerseys straight instead of that dorky wavy style.
I feel like im the only person on planet earth who likes the weird wavy numbers
It was a masterpiece compared to the Anaheim Michelin Man jerseys. They had to get rid of them because the players refused to wear them anymore. To my knowledge it's the only time that has happened.
Anaheim Michelin Man?! Tell me more!
I also love the Lighthouse and wish they would incorporate it into a fresh jersey design somehow.
The Mighty Ducks logo was popular? I don't recall that.
If you can find one ….. the jersey is big money now
Constantly searching for a Starter fisherman jersey.
All I could get is 2 Islanders pennants with that logo
Folks who defend this garbage could use an introductory course on graphic design. When it comes to both logos and uniforms, you should strive to emphasize certain colors and details but make sure not to overdo anything to the point that the eye will be overwhelmed. And the design should have well balanced colors and geometry. The Islanders new look violated of basic principle of a good look. The colors and shapes are not proportioned well, and suddenly there's a stupid new logo apparently designed by a child or a stoned teen dominating the jersey.
nice one hugh
Nice one James!
It’s a very 90’s logo and even though I’m a Rangers fan, I actually like it better then the classic logo. Probably because I’m a Rangers fan. And probably because it was the logo in the NHL ‘96 game for snes!
"WE WANT FISH STICKS" I really think the Islanders should use the Lighthouse Patch from the jersey shoulders in a design - it's awesome.
And a lot of 90's graphic design in hindsight seems very corny and trying too hard.
Crying out loud, the reverse retro jerseys have not even been a "trying" case. If Islanders had any sence today, they would easily do the 3 following;
What a logo!
Now I want a Fisherman jersey…
I don't hate the fisherman logo, I really the wavy names and numbers.
Do you collect other teams jerseys? If so, which do you have?
@@sideline.archive I don't
The dynasty was over long before that. kirk muller sent isles into their '90's tailspin.
@@sideline.archive you are right. the logo should have never been changed. i hated that logo and was glad when isles went back to original logo. they put it back on those ugly unis before going back to original unis.
I don’t know which was worse The Fisherman or Buffalo’s Slug
The slug by a million. Truly terrible.
Buffalo should have never dumped their original logo in the first place after many years they have returned to it
As a Sabres fan, the slug.
Nothing says hockey quite like a British accent.
Come down to the Leeds Knights sometime pal.
Ron Hextall DID NOT give up 22 goals , get your stats right ...
@@Elementsoftheory29 looks like we’ve found Ron Hextall’s burner account.
@@Elementsoftheory29 but you’re absolutely correct, Ron gave up 16 and was pulled for Jamie McLennan who gave up 6. It was the Islanders as a team who gave up 22.
Good ol Hextall, giving up goals on shots from the blue line.
I have a Wendell Clark Fish stick jersey! Love it! If anyone is interested on a deeper dive, "We Want Fish Sticks" is a fantastic and very informative read.
It’s an incredible book - I put it in the description when I uploaded - can’t recommend it enough.
Most Islanders fans I talk to are in agreement that if they used the Lighthouse as the main logo it would have gone over much better.
i confirmed with alan hahn the story in his book about a visiting teams back up goalie getting busy in the locker room with a female fan was ron tugnutt lol
Sens or Jackets era Ron?
@@sideline.archive penguins i was at the game saw him talking to the girl first 2 periods she was wearing the shortest skirt ive ever seen lol at coliseum backups didnt sit on bench they sat in visiting teams entrance tunnel. the girls name was trish they called her trish the dish lol story is jagr walked in on them when he went in get skate fixed
The NHL Jersey really went through a lot in the 1990's when they started using Computers to design them. So many ugly jerseys from this era.
The Coyotes Kachina is a favourite as well as the desert fox. Don’t get me started on the Blue Jackets though
@@sideline.archive that one was a classic for sure. But then there are the flames, the oilers 3rd, burger kings, blues, so so many. It was like every team decided to update their look (except for a few) and then later went back to their original look. Nearly all of them.
The Flames stallion jersey is fire. Talk to me about Burger King? What's that?
Also, the sports gear companies started telling team owners that they wanted to try "bold" and "innovative" designs, most of which have aged like milk.
Old time hockey!
The oldest and best!! Appreciate you brother
This best
Awful era for whole NHL, several teams relocating (for example, "Whalers" with their fantastic logo disappeared)... a lot of teams switched to crappy dark colors (blue became almost gray - grayish blue), all these logo experiments... also Dallas black jersey like NBA (numbers on the chest). Now it's better. Except for that "UTAH HC", c'mon it's not Europe (where I'm from) with all these "Barcelona FC", etc. give a proper name.
The MLS names are the ones that get me. Real Salt Lake?! FC Dallas? Sporting Kansas City?? Come on lads
I amazing video
Thanks bro! Appreciate the support
It was terrible. It looks very minor league. But then, there were a lot of bad logo redesigns and uniform changes in the 90s...in ALL sports. (A'hem..Seattle Supersonics)
Gretzky?!?!
Yeah wayne was not a part of the 94 team
Correct - he was still a King! My bad.
I dunno I liked it the logo itself. The colours were cheesy more than anything
Dunno its my favorite logo of nhl this comes from flyers fan
