Loved racing my Laser back in the day. Got very good at going over the high side during a capsize, putting a foot on the dagger board and stopping the capsize and scrambling back into the cockpit while hardly getting wet. Good times.
Well... the capsize was prevented, but the skipper turned right into the path of the boat to starboard and forced it to quickly change course, otherwise I think there would have been a collision. It's better to take the capsize than cause a collision which could damage boats and quite possibly cause an injury on the water.
@@dawsonellis I’m not an expert on the rules of racing, but while I agree a leeward boat can luff up a windward boat, I have two questions: 1) when you’re sailing straight downwind, which boat is to leeward? And 2) isn’t there a rule that says you can’t luff a boat above your proper course?
@@andrewbell8050 this is a practice, so rules of sailing don't really apply here, but proper course only applies when two boats begin overlapped, not when a boat approaches from clear astern/clear ahead. In this case, since the nearly capsized boat was clear ahead when it broached, it had full luffing rights on the boat behind since proper course did not apply.
When I was in the service they used to have Sunfish sailboats to check out once you got your check walk through and it was epic sailing for hours in perfect weather. Bet sailing those Lasers is a kick ass time
Put more kicker on. Keep it in reach or in your hand, as soon as you feel you are getting too unstable put some kicker on, when you in control again ease it back off
@@oleyholmes1989 well that is a fantastic explanation to the normal guy like me, and not a single swear word in the entire paragraph. You sailors are alright.
I owned one for years and years. It depends strongly on wind speed and type of water. Up to 3 bft it is easy going and a smooth ride in both lake and see. Above 3 Bft to lets say 4 it is getting a lot tougher. Downwind on waves is a real challenge. But the other courses are still doable. Forget about 4 plus until you gained experience
Pretty static leeches yeah, plowing through the waves instead of finding bridges across them as it’s slow chop. But they’re still young ,they’ve got time to improve
I believe the one saving the death roll, later that year, ended up being Dutch national champion in the laser 4.7 and he won the laser 4.7 Europacup “Under 18”…
Yeah, I forgot people are supposed to be born already knowing everything about sailing. In my case, I completed two Vendée Globe, one Volvo Ocean Race and built my own yacht before even being born.

I remember that maneuver !
dry capsizes are great
One thing that I need to master!
It's crazy how fast and powerful these little boats are. Even with the scaled down 4.7 rig these kids are just FLYING.
Nah its just windy. In reality you cant tell them apart from someone in a bath

What college?
@@vidhurbusannagari7700 Pennsylvania State University.
We sailed at the Stone Valley Rec. Area. in Petersburg, PA
What an amazing opportunity ! Good on you and lady Providence for making it happen, too
in german we call it "geigen" which translates into "playing the violin"... not quite as dramatic as the "death roll", LOL... nicely saved though
If you heard me actually playing the violin, you would use the expression `death roll`. 😜
I love running the wind in a sloop rigged 16" open day sailer.
16 inches? Jk I know what you meant...

experienced that many times, its pretty scary!
yeah same lol
Then comes the moment that you loose control and end up running downwind
With daggerboard down? Come one, that's only half the fun
Been there, done that, got the WET T Shirt.
That looks like a ton of fun
As a sailor I can confirm.
@@jmdibonaventuro same. especially when there are the big waves going downwind and you are basically surfing
It is, you should try it

🤣🤣🤣🤣Good ONE 👍
Hate that feeling, especially with stronger wind. You have the “I’m fucked” thought, and it’s usually too late tu un-fuck
Class?
to bad it is the 4.7 and not the standard sail ):
They're like 14 they physically can't run standard
@vibratingstring good for you?
I remember the "Laser M" for stronger winds ... is that a thing of the past ?
@vibratingstring then you ran the wrong sail. Each sail as a weight class
Lasers are fun, but I prefer a boat with ballast.
You are the ballast in a Laser. Better move fast!
Scared of getting wet? ;)
How are you supposed to handle this?

Used to sail Lasers but now 49ers, nothing wrong with how a boat works best
@@noahmckay276 is the 49er really hard to sail? I am going to move to one now since the 470 isn't gonna work for me because its mixed
On a boat without shrouds it's not a problem, laser breaks some of those "thou shall never" rules, for example sailing in the surf is also ok

Real Sailors don't tell other Sailors how to sail. William Duffield would have stuck his mastin the mud here. Gfy billy boy.
