  • We went out in 25+ knots and massive waves with two 420's and a 470 off Sandringham Yacht Club... The result was a broken camera and some almost broken sailors. We hope you enjoy the carnage and speed.

    I'm 62, raced 470 from ages 14 to 20 ... never left me I can feel this video in my limbs , sensations return. Including the feeling of being bumped off trapeze by a wave to end up a dismal mess in the cockpit. Great video great memories. Thanks

    What I love about this video is that these lads are not sailing some hotrod skiffs or using moths with foils or whatever, they are sailing ordinary dinghies that you would see at any old sailing club. They then took these ordinary dinghies out into some extremely challenging conditions and made them fly. Hat tip to ya!

    Hahah, i was a kid, 17 years old. It was blowing 35 knots on land and 39 with gusts. I said "you know what, full send it" rigged a laser standard and a friend of mine rigged a 4.7. We went out I made it back unharmed, my friend got capsized and couldn't turn the boat over. A yacht that was passing by had to help him come back at the club. I was banned from rigging boats for a month!!

    Normal driving. When we are had "Snipe" from 1988 to 1995 - did same. Waited black clouds and go for fan to sea! But its only 420 and 470 - we(crew 140 kg) did same with small "Cadet" in wind 15-17 m per sek(30-35 knots), its have only 6,5 sq.m sails and had aproximality 10 knots and glissering on glad water . Flying was on overkill border. But here is usual fan in strong wind.

    I once was trapping in that wind full out and my skipper who was kind of new dumped the main and we capsized. That happened like 5 times that day and by the end, our main concern wasn't keeping the boat flat or going fast, it was to keep the spinnaker from filling with water and getting stuck in the rig.

      dcfcrams4ever Hey mate, for this I used a Canon 7d & a Go Pro Hero 3+ Black edition. - When I film with the Canon on the water I use a lightweight tripod to act as a stabiliser, and just use a simple DIY gopole (a retired spinnaker pole) for the GoPro. Also, each clip is stabilised in post production as well. Hope this helps.

    • @TheBerliner
      @TheBerliner 9 лет назад

      sailingshack Some of the footage is shockingly sharp and contrasty -- was that the 7D? Seems an old-school camera for such video quality. Most of the footage from the crash boat beginning at 0:55 is really very good. Would love to know what the gear or processing was for those shots. Nice video.

    • @sailingshack
      @sailingshack  9 лет назад

      TheBerliner Thanks mate, this video is a mix of 7D and GoPro Hero3+ footage, the shot at 0:55 is from the gopro which might explain the sharpness. - Not much post processing just some grading and balancing and also some post stabilisation to the clips.
      We now shoot with a 7D mark 2 and the quality is second to none. Vast improvements from the 1st generation 7D.
