- Cécile McLorin Salvant covers "Over The Rainbow," "Optimistic Voices," and "If I Only Had A Brain" from The Wizard of Oz, and Gregory Porter's song "No Love Dying," live in concert at SFJazz in San Francisco, California on February 12, 2022.
Over The Rainbow, Optimistic Voices and If I Only Had A Brain were written for the film The Wizard Of Oz (1939). Judy Garland sang Over The Rainbow, and it became her signature song. Here in concert, Salvant sings the opening verse which was omitted from the movie ("When all the world is a hopeless jumble / And the raindrops tumble all around / Heaven opens a magic lane").
If I Only Had A Brain was sung in the film by the character Scarecrow, played by Ray Bolger, when he meets Dorothy. Optimistic Voices ("you're out of the woods, you're out of the dark...") was sung by an unseen chorus as Dorothy heads to the Emerald City. No Love Dying appeared on Gregory Porter's third studio album, Liquid Spirit (2013).
Joining Salvant onstage were Sullivan Fortner (piano), Keita Ogawa (percussion), and Alexa Tarantino (flute, piccolo, alto flute).

Cecile McLorin Salvant official bio:
Three-time Grammy Winner Cécile McLorin Salvant is the “finest jazz singer to emerge in the last decade” (The New York Times). She returns with her quartet to perform music from her forthcoming Nonesuch release, Ghost Song, featuring a diverse mix of seven originals and five interpretations on the themes of ghosts, nostalgia, and yearning. Salvant says, “It’s unlike anything I’ve done before-it’s getting closer to reflecting my personality as an eclectic curator. I’m embracing my weirdness!”
Possessing a deep, velvety voice, rhythmic poise, and a sublime feel for the blues, Salvant combines conservatory-honed technique with a beguiling gift for lyrical interpretation - a singular, inimitable talent that won her the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Vocals Competition and drew the attention of early collaborators Jacky Terrasson and Wynton Marsalis. Her 2013 American debut album, the Grammy-nominated WomanChild, was the first real opportunity for American audiences to hear why Salvant had become a European sensation, and since then, her profile has taken a meteoric course around the world. For these dates, she performs with a phenomenal new quartet including pianist Sullivan Fortner, who partnered with Salvant on the duo release The Window.
With a repertoire full of lesser-known jazz and blues gems and a sly gift for lyrical re-interpretation through her contemporary sensibility, Salvant brings theatrical intensity to every song she sings.

Over The Rainbow lyrics:
When all the world is a hopeless jumble,
And the raindrops tumble all around,
Heaven opens a magic lane.
When all the clouds darken up the skyway,
There's a rainbow highway to be found.
Leading from your window pane
To a place behind the sun,
Just a step beyond the rain.
Somewhere over the rainbow way up high
There's a land that I heard of
Once in a lullaby
Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream
Really do come true
Someday I'll wish upon a star and
wake up where the clouds are far behind me
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
Away above the chimney tops
That's where you'll find me
Somewhere over the rainbow bluebirds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then oh why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why oh why can't I?
Written by Harold Arlen (music) / Yip Harburg (lyrics)

I love her voice and talent so much
It just amazes me how she can take any tune, and just transform it into something other worldly
She makes me feel hopeful about the world so very brilliant 👏
An Absolutely Amazing TALENT 🎶🎵🎼🎤🏆😁
Wow!
I would love Net Flix to do a full on Cabernet show with Ms. Mclorin Salvant with ambient lighting. Just her and her piano player or what have you. Oh, please. Oh, please! Netflix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She is so special.
What I love about Cecile is she is reconsidering a song vocal Picasso !!!!👏
Meant reconstructing a song
🎉surprenante Cecile ❤
I was there this night as well! Thank you so much for this recording!
My pleasure! I loved this show and wanted to share some of it with others. Salvant is so talented and yet still unknown to so many. By the way, I just posted her cover of that Dianne Reeves tune ("Mista") from this show. Cheers!
@@TimBracken Thank you for sharing! So sad I missed it; next time for sure!
@@TimBracken Did you by any chance make a post for the encore from this show? It's so vivd in my memory and would love to hear it again.
Hi Charles, I did! I've fallen a bit behind on posting my concert videos--as you can tell from my channel, I've gone a bit overboard on concerts lately now that things are returning to normal--but I'll try to post that in the next few days. If you subscribe to my channel, RUclips is more likely to tell you when I post it. Cheers!
@Charles Ryan: I just posted my last video from the night, which is her medley of Kate Bush covers (Wuthering Heights and Breathing). Hopefully this is what you remember from the encore. I have a handful of others I'll try to post from this show in the near future. Enjoy!

The part from 0:00 to 1:30 ("When all the world is a hopeless jumble / And the raindrops tumble all around / Heaven opens a magic lane / When all the clouds darken up the skyway / There's a rainbow highway to be found / Leading from your window pane / To a place behind the sun / Just a step beyond the rain") is actually from the original Over The Rainbow song. It just didn't make it into the Wizard Of Oz itself. This intro is often used in live theater productions of the show and is included in the sheet music from the movie. Many covers also use this original introduction (Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, etc.).
My cats feel uncomfortable listening to this, time for some Nina Simone
Tme to give up your cats.
