  • Cécile McLorin Salvant sings a cover of the Kate Bush songs "Wuthering Heights" and "Breathing" live in concert at SFJazz in San Francisco, California on February 12, 2022. Wuthering Heights was the lead single from Kate Bush's debut studio album, The Kick Inside (1978), and reached number one on the UK Singles Chart. Breathing was the lead single from Bush's third studio album, Never For Ever (1980).
Salvant released a studio version of Wuthering Heights on her sixth studio album, Ghost Song (2022). Salvant is a Grammy Award winning jazz vocalist from Miami, Florida. Joining her onstage were Sullivan Fortner (piano), Keita Ogawa (percussion), and Alexa Tarantino (flute, piccolo, alto flute).
    =============
    Wuthering Heights lyrics:
Out on the wily, windy moors
We'd roll and fall in green
You had a temper like my jealousy
    Too hot, too greedy
    How could you leave me
When I needed to possess you?
I hated you, I loved you too
    Bad dreams in the night
They told me I was going to lose the fight
    Leave behind my wuthering, wuthering
    Wuthering Heights
    Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy
I’ve come home, I'm so cold
    Let me in-a-your window
    Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy
I’ve come home, I'm so cold
    Let me in-a-your window
Ooh, it gets dark, it gets lonely
On the other side from you
I pine a lot, I find the lot
    Falls through without you
I'm coming back, love, cruel Heathcliff
My one dream, my only master
Too long I roam in the night
I'm coming back to his side to put it right
I'm coming home to wuthering, wuthering
    Wuthering Heights
    Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy
I’ve come home, I'm so cold
    Let me in-a-your window
    Heathcliff, it's me, Cathy
I’ve come home, I'm so cold
    Let me in-a-your window
Written by Catherine Bush (a/k/a Kate Bush)

    Cecile McLorin Salvant official bio:
Three-time Grammy Winner Cécile McLorin Salvant is the “finest jazz singer to emerge in the last decade” (New York Times). She returns with her quartet to perform music from her forthcoming Nonesuch release, Ghost Song, featuring a diverse mix of seven originals and five interpretations on the themes of ghosts, nostalgia and yearning. Salvant says, “It’s unlike anything I’ve done before-it’s getting closer to reflecting my personality as an eclectic curator. I’m embracing my weirdness!”
Possessing a deep, velvety voice, rhythmic poise, and a sublime feel for the blues, Salvant combines conservatory-honed technique with a beguiling gift for lyrical interpretation - a singular, inimitable talent that won her the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Vocals Competition and drew the attention of early collaborators Jacky Terrasson and Wynton Marsalis. Her 2013 American debut album, the Grammy-nominated WomanChild, was the first real opportunity for American audiences to hear why Salvant had become a European sensation. Since then, her profile has taken a meteoric course around the world. For these dates, she performs with a phenomenal new quartet including pianist Sullivan Fortner, who partnered with Salvant on the duo release The Window.
With a repertoire full of lesser-known jazz and blues gems and a sly gift for lyrical re-interpretation through her contemporary sensibility, Salvant brings theatrical intensity to every song she sings.

A brilliant interpretation of the songs, ...inspired morphing into Breathing.
This moving performance shows what a fabulous performer Cécile is and also highlights the masterful and theatrical lyrics of Kate’s inspired writing!

this is exactly why i can't listen to her all the time: anytime i click on cecile mclorin salvant i do so w an awareness there is like a 74% chance i will have an emotional breakdown and start blubbering midway thru. but tbh like a 100% chance it will be some of the most brilliant, satisfying shit i have ever heard which is why i can't keep away. what a pairing of songs, i just read wuthering heights and it is remarkable how resonantly she is able to build the power of her music thru montage and sequence...i feel like she would be a wonderful actor if she ever wanted to have a crossover moment, her command of structure and storytelling is v impressive and coupled w her ability to be vulnerable, i think she'd be dynamite, you can already see it in her performances and music videos. move over gaga. i desperately hope to hear her live someday, beyond

    Holy shit!
I don't know your stuff, but this was so moving (and fucking emotionally brutal...).
I was completely satisfied with the slow buildup Wuthering Heights, but now I need therapy after that rendition of Breathing...
    Really, thank you.

Breathing should be included in the title of the video... but then again, it was also a nice surprise! Especially with the transition on "outside." In addition to Wuthering Heights, it's one of my favorite Kate Bush songs, and Cécile sings it really well!

just coming back to this video to say i'm trying and failing not to be bitter about the fact that we live in a world where taylor swift is played on a loop in most supermarkets instead of this....like i get why, it would be a lot to question your entire life every day when you're just trying to pick up like, bananas and tp but still i am upset lol

I know what you mean - I just saw Cecile live recently in a tiny venue and while I love being able to see her in such an intimate environment, part of me is angry she isn’t playing places 5x, 10x, 20x that size. I’m just glad she makes enough to keep doing what she does and glad to keep supporting her.

Fantastic, highly artistic but of course also heavily alienated. You have to get involved with that.
In this deeply soulful performance she creates a completely new song - hardly recognizable!
