The bass player is Lee Sklar. An all-time great bass player still going strong. He has a RUclips channel.
Awesome to see a young Lee Sklar (bass) on this recording too. I forgot what he looked like back then.
Wow! I wondered if that was Lee! Very cool!
In one of his concert videos, James thanked Carole for her generosity in letting him release it first, joking, "Of course, I didn't realize then that I would be singing it every night for the rest of my life." Then he called it "maybe the best pop song ever written."
Carole, meanwhile, didn't write the lyrics for most of her songs, but she did for this. And she has said that the words just came through her from some other place. "I'll be the first one to say it's a great song because I don't feel like I wrote it."
Carole wrote this song for James after hearing his song "Fire and Rain," in which he sings, "I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend." I place those two songs among the essential songs of the '70s.
That makes me like it even more
It is even more special when you understand the story behind Fire and Rain.
James Taylor was the first singer that made me want to be a singer. He has such an accessible, warm and emotional texture to it.
I was lucky enough to hear her perform this in Hyde Park in 2015 when she played the Tapestry album end to end and she closed out the set with this song, getting the crowd to join in. Magnificent.
The crowd were leaving the park afterwards and some small group would start singing this song and whole larger groups would join in, almost like a football crowd. I'll never ever forget it, it was real hairs on the back of the neck stuff. One of the greatest writers of her generation.
I was lucky enough to see him perform this live a few months ago.
James Taylor is probably one of the humblest people I've ever heard of. And it was a very pleasant surprise to see that his son appears to be following in his father's footsteps as a performer.
His brother Livingston is also very good
Interesting that Carole King "simply" accompanied James Taylor on piano without singing one note of her timeless tune. Curious what you thought of the electric bass player's scooping those low notes at just the right time. This was so well done. Bravo all!
The great Lee Sklar (with a much shorter and darker beard - ruclips.net/video/JfYTWI49hDU/видео.html).
I think that Leland Sklar on bass.
@@rk41gator If that is true, I think that's the youngest I have seen him.
Such a beautiful song. There is so many people that I miss that come to mind listening to it. Love both James and Carole. If I had an ounce of musical ability, I'd want to be like him. It was a shame that after they were together for so long only to have split, but they were still able to collaborate and perform together shows how strong the connection they had.
Huh? They were never "together" ad a couple. They were just friends. James was married to Carly Simon.
@@RadCenter Ooops! I did confuse the relationship. DUH!
No worries,@@firedoc5! Both talented women!
@@RadCenter Love them both.
Oh now you're talking, James Taylor has such an amazing voice, it's like velvet....The Frozen Man and Copperline being two classics....
Dad says this song was on the radio in the charts for both Calol King and James Taylor in the same year. He was the first artist to sing to Paul at the Apple Records Label by the Beatles. I took mom may 2 or 3 years ago--to see him. He still brings in a sizable crowd. After his small band performance he sat on the edge of the stage to chat with just anyone who was interested. What a Gentle Man. This is on Carol Kind's Tapestry album. Huge hit album that she never achieved after that. But has made her fortune writing for others.
And now i know how how he creates his distinct sound.
My favourite James duo is the clip with Carly Simon doing 'You can close your eyes.' So sweet.
This is deffo a song that can put tears in my eyes. Not from being sad or wishing for the past, just for the whole thing. The words make you think, and the melody is just so lovely.
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Totally agree! I’m trying not to totally break down!
I saw James and Carole perform together in 2010 during their Trubadour Reunion tour. They sang this song (and many others) as a duet. A wonderful show!
I don't have any great insights to this song or James Taylor, I just wanted to say that I love your reactions and being a vocal coach, your insights into the songs and singers is deeper than most
I think Beth is the best in her musical appreciation and graciousness as a teacher. I find most of the reaction coaches get stuck in showing off their technical knowledge yet lack a complete understanding of the rock pop genre. There’s one who stops after every note and completely misses the “ vibe” and “ groove” .
Two of my favourite artists....I still have her Tapestry Album I bought in the 70s I listened to this album over and over
Two of 🇺🇸 finest musicians. We and the world are lucky to have had them all these years...we are so proud. Carole King is beyond describable for her talent. Shout out for the late Gerry Goffin...her partner/husband and his lyric contributions creating their classics. Anything they've done is worth listening to.
James is absolutely amazing live! Still!
Wow, is that a young Leland Sklar on bass? I love this song and the intricate guitar playing by James Taylor is beautiful.
Yes! (Subscribe to his channel if you are a fan of Leland!)
Two of the BEST singer/songwriters ever!
Leland Sklar on bass!!!
One of my favorite songs! Thank you for reacting to it!
If you get chance (and haven’t already), check out his duet with Carly Simon on You Can Close your Eyes, it’s really beautiful
I see!
This music is not only nostalgic- it also feels Christmasy. In a good vibe type of way, and mellow.
I've never wanted to be young again, but I could wish that these artists were.
Genia
Me agrada mucho todo de este chica, irradia paz
Beautiful
Back to the roots.🫶✌️
Adore these two!
Genial!! Excelente trabajo👍🏻✨
The beret suits you. Both Taylor and King's stuff has aged really well.
Me encanta You've Got A Friend
I think of James Taylor as kind of the male equivalent of Karen Carpenter. His voice doesn't sound trained, he doesn't do anything technically difficult, he just sings really well with a beautiful tone, and nobody else sounds like him.
Carol King was writing hits for others years before she started recording herself. One was for Aretha Franklin. This version is priceless ---> . Aretha Franklin - (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman (Live at Kennedy Center Honors) ... Carol was surprised and very emotional
Hermosa entrenadora de canto
Ella canta increible
James with hair!! I can still remember the coeds gaga over this guy.
I was blessed with going to a James Taylor concert with Carole as his lead in act. What talent was on that stage!! Carole was just beginning the most public part of her career.
Still love both of them and their music.
And there is Leland Sklar playing bass!
Excelente trabajo
Love the hat, Beth!
I don't physically see colours with sound but I instinctively associate musical keys with different colours. A is scarlet, A minor is crimson, D is royal blue, D minor is cobalt or prussian blue, E is golden/green, E minor a deeper leaf-green, C is white, Bb is pale blue etc. It doesn't get in the way of other imaginative associations that come from melodies, chord progressions or rhythms, it's just another layer to the mental landscape of how I experience music.Tone also plays a part; James Taylor's voice evokes some nice pastel shades of the colour palette.
Increíble canta hermoso 😍😍
Genial muy buen trabajo
after all these years they are still very good friends
With those first few notes, the smell of my parents' old stereo suddenly came over me.
There was a reason JT was the first artist signed to the Beatles' Apple Records.
Buenas canciones sin duda
Bellas voces
Hermosa excelente
❤❤❤
Really enjoyed your reaction and comments on this Beth. Was very interested to hear what you said about his voice. I saw JT in Earls Court. He was great. A lot less hair than in this video!!BTW I don't see colours with music lol, but when I watch a film, I tend to listen to the music more than the dialogue!!
Buena música, éxitos 👏
Qué bonito encuentro
Bonita canción un tanto depresiva pero bonita después de todo fuiste su complemento mi. H. Prrj ❤👏👏🍀🍀
Muy bonita el interprete
👏👏
There's another recording where Carole King and James Taylor sing the song as a duet. It's perhaps my favorite version. The two of them have been lifelong (platonic) friends and have occasionally sung the song together for decades.
My family and I once sang the song in church accompanied by a slide show with paintings of Jesus. Picture the song as gospel verses with a message from God, it's works quite well.
Hermosa
Buen trabajo
Bonita cancion
Bonita música 🎶
Have you reacted to Linda Ronstadt and Glen Campbell singing the James Taylor song "Going to Carolina in My Mind" - live on the Glen Campbell Good-time Hour TV show? Its all over RUclips!
Excelente
Found your channel from your first aid kit videos and been binging. Yes it's 3am and I need sleep but I've got a bunch of videos queued up!
Would love to see you cover:
Joy Crookes - London Mine (or any of her songs if they catch your fancy). I think you'll enjoy her video, it reminds me of my home and all the warmth that can be found in a big city.
good theme

Voces únicas ☺️☺️☺️

Could you do an analysis and reaction for Carole King singing So Far Away ? I would be curious to see what your take on it would be. 🙏✌️
Beth- check out Aretha Franklin singing Carole King’s Natural Woman at the Kennedy Center It was one of Aretha’s last performances and it’s ICONIC. So is Carol’s reaction!!!!!❤❤❤😂.
This is one of those covers which are essentially simultaneous (a double cover?), as I believe the recordings overlapped and both Taylor and King played on both versions. It was apparently a response to "I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend" from Taylor's "Fire and Rain".
La mejor
☺️
Genial 👍
Buenos comentarios
Muy interesante
James Taylor is an incredible talent and I've always greatly enjoyed his music. But Carole King is a national treasure; right up there with the likes of Aretha!
Chevere
Genial..
Genial
Waw, waw, waw.....,
🌟✨💥
Good vídeo
I have Dyslexia and so anything visual is pretty much a no go. I don't have a very good visual imagination and I can't process visual information very quickly or accurately. However I pick up on aural information very fast (thankfully) - I can't sight read to save my life or imagine images clearly but play me a song a couple of times and it's locked in forever. The same with rhythm and words. It's amazing how diverse we all are but lovely how it means we can contribute to art in different ways.aa
I believe there are some other recordings where Carole and James sing this in a duet.
Esse vídeo é velho. Tenho em casa. Foi gravado na Inglaterra, acho. Você não estava nem no projeto de seus pais e eu já ouvia James Taylor. Figurinha fácil aqui na minha cidade.
Oh
Taylor's mother had a scholarship to Peabody, so he has some good genes for singing.
Bien 👍 👍
While James makes it all look easy and seamless, his finger style guitar playing is really unique to him and very hard to emulate. Great song!
Sou seu fam. Gostaria que reagisse ao dueto Rita Lee e Milton Nascimento com a canção Mania de voce. Um classico da musica brasileira. Grato.
I wish you would cover Burton Cummings, either Stand tall or these eyes. You would be impressed.
Your videos are magnificent! I've discovered your channel when appeared on my home the video about "Your Love". I'm italian, so i don't know if my english is good, but i want to recommed to listen the voice of an Italian singer (the best italian singer for me): Marco Masini. He's voice is so painful and cathartic at the same time. Please, if you'll read this comment listen "Vaffanculo" or "Protagonista"
