Fascinating how she compares him to Joni Mitchell! Neil and Joni are like doppelgangers. Born two years apart in Canada, they both suffered from polio as children. They both learned the ukulele as their first instrument. They both moved around quite often as children. They both struggled in school and dropped out, although Joni did eventually return to graduate. They've both had long, distinguished careers. They both are considered among the most influential artists of the last half of the 20th Century. They both experimented with many genres of music, and confounded both fans and critics with their musical directions. They both turned physical limitations to their own advantage in their styles: Joni's hand suffered from polio and affected the way she tuned her guitar, Neil's voice was always noted as nasally, yet he made that his trademark (although on "Without Rings" from his Silver and Gold, there is no trace of the nasal sound whatever - check it out!). They both are very outspoken and deeply philosophical about many issues. They are both private and relatively reclusive in their lifestyles. @UCdsNoCczffvHWDCWPbx9k7w So what? That is part of his style. Tonights the Night is my favorite album of all time and on it, there are many instances of vocal raggedness and it fits the album perfectly. Alternately, on the live album from the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion, his voice sounds perfectly pitched and clear as a bell. My comment here was to point out that to say Neil can't sing is just a stupid statement to make. Because he can sing. He is a very effective singer, many times fitting his voice to perfectly suit the feeling of the song.
Some people hate his voice, I’ve loved it forever...no wrongs or rights, just personal tastes. He sings about deep topics with honesty and emotion, which to me resonates very strongly.
Neil...wow...I love when a younger generation finds an appreciation for classic and massively influencial artists who were famous before their time...great stuff 🔥

I love how young people are so fucking amazed at people who are actually talented musicians and can sit down with an instrument and play and sing their own songs. They seem absolutely mesmerized by it.
I always felt Neil was the guy that truly runs the story in his mind as he's singing it just looks like it in his face and I think that's a big part of how his acoustic music comes through there's so many singers like that it seems like.

He spends almost more time talking and telling stories than actually singing, and I can tell you it works. He's very funny and extremely entertaining! The whole package for a really great folk singer and storyteller! Love your channel!
You never need a lyric sheet listening to Neil. You hear every word clearly and he is such a brilliant songwriter, you can get lost in the words themselves.
"it's like early grunge"
💓💓
Neil Young is known as the godfather of grudge. He was a big inspiration to pearl jam and has worked with them throughout the career. Check out Neil and pearl performing together ❤️❤️
I expected a vocal coach to hate Young’s voice. People have been telling me “he can’t sing” for years. It’s official, he CAN.
@@artdeco5464 "just saying..." a bunch of bullshit. You don't know what you are talking about. If you don't like the sound of his voice that only reveals that you don't like the sound of his voice. That's fine, these things are subjective. What isn't subjective are the actual parameters in which people's singing voices are evaluated. He was in pitch. His phrasing and clarity were spot on. His breathing was good and his ability to convey emotion is amongst the best there is. In a nutshell, Neil can sing, regardless of if it appeals to you or not.
@@seanmcaleavy2369 exactly. "just saying..." the lame salutation of trolls and idiots who smugly think they landed a zinger.
@@seanmcaleavy2369Love Neil, love his voice (best fit between song and singer ever) but he has been known to sing flat on occasion ruclips.net/video/zKceNid5grg/видео.html Go to 3:45
@UCdsNoCczffvHWDCWPbx9k7w So what? That is part of his style. Tonights the Night is my favorite album of all time and on it, there are many instances of vocal raggedness and it fits the album perfectly. Alternately, on the live album from the Dorothy Chandler Pavillion, his voice sounds perfectly pitched and clear as a bell. My comment here was to point out that to say Neil can't sing is just a stupid statement to make. Because he can sing. He is a very effective singer, many times fitting his voice to perfectly suit the feeling of the song.
@@artdeco5464 I think you missed the gist of Joe Branch's reply and just who it is that he is comparing to a smug and idiotic troll.
Nobody can imitate Neil Young. One of a kind.
He’s incredibly talented on sooooo many levels , unique guitarist, lyrics unsurpassed, one of the few rock geniuses
The “Rust never sleeps” live video concert is one of my favourite live performances ever
"doesn't mean that much to me to mean that much to you" Incredible lyric!
I'm 62 and have been a Neil Young fan since I was about 15 or so. I'm glad you found him and can tell you're going to listen to a LOT of his music. Glad you discovered him!!
Come on Beth! Go down the rabbit hole that is Neill Young! Comes a Time. Harvest Moon. Helpless. ETC!!!!!👏👏👏👏
Have you heard k d lang's cover of "Helpless" from "Hymns of the 49th Parallel?"
Powderfinger, The needle and the damage done, Rockin in the free world, This song's for you, Other than Bob Dylan he;s the best writer of socially significant songs in our times.
Sugar Mountain
Rockin' in the free world.
Harvest Moon is just a gorgeous song.
I loved Neil Young before I ever heard his voice. I was learning guitar, and the book was filled with his songs. Every one of them was amazing. He is one of the greatest songwriters of the last century.
I learned guitar along with Neil in the late 60s. My first guitar strap in 1969 had the same peace symbols as one Neil used for years
Discovered Neil Young in the 90's. His music is timeless. A true, real talent. ❤
Neil is one of the best lyricists in the business, just listen to his meanings, political, soulful, loving, once you are hooked, there is no going back, his discography is almost second to no 'one!
Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Gordon Lightfoot true Canadian legends!!!!
Don't forget the GREAT Leonard Cohen
My neighbor was married to Joni Mitchell. Interesting guy.
@Timothy Gray Don't say a dumb ass comment like that to a Canadian. Especially before Trump is removed from office. They are proud of the differences that makes them unique. It's like, how to instantly piss off a Chinese person, tell them they should be Japanese, or visa-versa.
@Timothy Gray Get bent
@@dougfielding8215 Don't speak for Canadians about Trump especially since you are ignorant of all facts and probably watch TV indoctrination..
Surprised to hear that Beth never heard Neil! I couldn't imagine not hearing Neil Young, this song in general just means so much to me and a whole of others I imagine :)
The tone, power and feeling of all of his singing is impressive, but those high notes are quite astonishing.
I'm 42 and have been a fan of Neil Young for over 25 years. There are few singers who can emote as much as he can with so little effort. I'm glad you found him too, Beth, and I hope you enjoy many more listens.
As far as I’m concerned, one person with a guitar and their voice is as brave and honest as a performance can get... and Neil is one of the masters.
Niel is a master at his Craft he is in the ICON line along with Bob Dylan
Just a legend, pure and simple.
Neil Young is a great lyricist and songwriter you should check out his "heart of gold", "hey hey my my'" or "cortez the killer''
Great songs
The guitar alone is clear like how he sings his playing is pure honesty
God damn his voice is hauntingly amazing.
Imagine being a person and never having heard this song before. Crazy times.
It's crazy. But better late than never, right?
Feigning ignorance to get youtube views seems to be a popular gimmick these days
@@hobbesthegoblin I know she works in music for a living, but I was like 25 before I discovered Neil Young. Even then, it was after a friend recommended him to me. It is possible to have not heard this song before.
@@justinh6509 I didn't like Neil Young until I was in my 20's, I think it's the same for a lot of people. I was just being sarcastic, so many people have called out twinsthenewtrend for allegedly pretending they don't know pop songs (even SNL!) but really they just grew up in a a strict environment that didn't allow them access to music. @@hobbesthegoblin Nah I shouldn't have taken it so serious. My apologies. I should've known, I've seen all the jokes made about twinsthenewtrend lately too. Lol
Neil started his first band in my hometown of Winnipeg....they were called The Squires. His first recording was done at a local radio station, and the producer told him something like, "you're a great musician kid, but you'll never make it as a singer". He is still very beloved in Winnipeg, and often calls it his home.
This was a great video to watch!
He's Canadian like Jon Mitchell.
The comment I thought of as soon as she said Joni Mitchell.
He's Canadian and American and has lived in California since the mid-1960s. She's Canadian and lives in BC.
Both grew up in western Canada as well - he Manitoba and she Saskatchewan.
@@BluegillGreg Yeah, but he doesn't speak American. He sounds western Canadian singing and speaking
@@brentm9848 Eh, I took her "American" as NORTH American.

Beth hears tone, rhythm, singing on the consonants and it allows me to hear what I never had a clue was there. And the really strange thing is she is just discovering this guy, who I knew in the 70's and this is a very young Neil Young, but she discovers him 50 years later and she makes him entirely fresh for me. She is really quite amazing, magical really.
My favourite Neil Young is "Needle And The Damage Done". It's a powerful social comment and a mournful lament at once.
A good version to watch is the MTV Unplugged performance. It's about 20 years later than this clip, but his voice hasn't changed much.
You should listen to Needle of Death by Bert Jansch, Neil young admits he wrote the Needle and the Damage done after hearing and being moved by Needle of Death.
Mine is Harvest but thats im my top 3 for sure
Funny fact: she talks about grunge and Neil actually made an album with Pearl Jam in 1995 named Mirror Ball.
There is a reason he is called the godfather of grunge xD
Fun Fact 2: Neil wore flannel on occasion as he came from Canada.
Neil Young is one of the very best singer / songwriters ever. My hero. His songs simply hit you straight in the heart.
singer / songwriter/musician
Artist
Empowering beyond belief!! Listen, n he's still rockin, spreading the good word! Thanks Neil**
I've seen him referred to as "Ol' Shaky" in the music press due to his distinctive voice. He is a genius songwriter and Neil always did what Neil wanted, no matter if the fans liked it or not. Legend.
I’m an old guy and watching the young trained musicians discover new-to-them artists puts a smile on my face. I’m sure she’s very talented and knowledgeable....but geez Neil Youngmone of my old favorites?
Beth, your emotional expression at 1:28....these are the moments that make us love music - sharing music - and coming back to music! It may sound weird, but I shed tears watching your reaction to this...as Neil sang out.
-An Old Man Musician
At this same performance he does a great rendition of "Heart of Gold" with harmonica.
I was in tears at the beauty if this song. Our vocal coach couldn't let it play without comment.
@Mike
She was practicing her profession here, and quite nicely. If you want this clip without her comments put “old man neil young” in the search box and it’ll be right there. Or click here:

Crosby, Stills & Nash also saw and heard something they liked when he joined up with them 😀 Another Canadian Talent!
He had toured with Stills and then joined up with him in the Buffalo Springfield
I love her expressions when she hears Neil sing.
So happy to see you doing Neil Young! Hope you react to more of his songs like Heart of Gold 💛
Great singer, proud Canadian, our hero. Never lost his love for his country and was so well known in North America. What an awesome career.
Yea...Wow! Those of us in our 60's and 70's were so lucky to have Neil, Joni, Rod, CSN&Y in our lives
Oh my...he was so young back then! Playing my adolescence here.:)
Technically speaking, he was Young then, and remains (Neil) Young, today!
@@grouchomarxist666 Haha...you're absolutely right!
It definatley influenced grunge. Kurt put a quote from a neil young song in his suicide note. "It's better to burn out than to fade away'.
Plus he's a huge hero and inspiration of Eddie Vedder's
Neil probably regretted the lyric the second he found that out.
@@Vince-lq3ve It did, Neil said it messed with his head for years after finding out...
@@mafiablokes Kurt Cobain did NOT commit suicide !
Neil’s right hand is just a metronome.
Neil is his music, his music is Neil. He writes about his life experiences, unique to him but when he puts his thoughts to music, those experiences become universal. And, Joanie Mitchell and him are friends and hung out together with other musicians and songwriters of that time, early '60's etc. It all makes sense, right? If you watch this video completely, he is a true one man show! To be able to sing, play harmonica, piano and guitar while you do the vocals requires great skill. He's a natural! Loved him from the very first time hearing him way back in the 60's!🤗 And, he never quits! 🙋🐨👍🏼
So much talent - a song writer - a vocalist - a guitarist - an arranger - and his fabulous song book which ages well with his melodic approach.
He's always been a hugely underrated singer.
today Neil Young is that "old man" He at one time was part of Crosby Stills Nash and Young back in the 70s
What happened to Neil Young? He became Neil Old.
When I hear this song I'm taken back to my bedroom in the early 70s, in southern Alberta, with my radio, record player, and a black Light glowing purple. I like his Four Strong Winds since he mentions Alberta.
Neil Young is a Legend , one of a kind , grew up on Neil's Music , just one of the Millions that had the pleasure and luck to do so .
CANADA loves our son, Neil Young. His father Scott Young, a Canadian author, novelist and journalist. Neil grew up partly in Winnipeg, Manitoba during the 60’s and is a contemporary of the Guess Who.
Neil is probably the top songwriter/singer(not to mention his insane guitar props, electric and acoustic both) of the 20th century. I could rattle off 20 great songs written by Neil off the top of my head, easily. Check out “cinnamon girl” and “down by the river” “cowgirl in the sand” to start, that’s some true, unparalleled rock and roll. Love his folk/country songs too, but Neil & Crazy horse is truly phenomenal.
"Doesn't mean that much to me to mean that much to you" Great Line!!
kurt cobain quotes neil young on his suicide letter: "it's better to burn out than to fade away" from the song "hey hey, my my (into the black)"
also neil is very close friends with eddie vedder (pearl jam), they have multiple projects together AND eddie was actually the guy who made the speach for neil's induction into the rock and roll hall of fame :)
and personally "down by the river" is my fav neil song ^_^
Oasis did fun cover versions of "Hey Hey, My My"
For me it’s “this notes for you”.
Yes, and by all accounts this haunted Neil. He responded to Kurt's death with the characteristically bleak and beautiful Sleeps With Angels.
Agreed!! Down By the River is an incredible song
I was going to write exactly that. So, yeah, you could say he had an influence on Kurt Cobain.
Mr. Neil Young is incomparable, his music will take you to another place !! This is a master at work !!
I'm over 70 plus yrs old and this is the sound of my youth alongside so many incredible music and lyrics . So lucky to have seen so many of them live . You were born too late but enjoy your life young lady .
Absolutely love this song. Most of the early grunge bands give him credit for inspiration.
First time watching, Neil brought me here. Please, this album Harvest is amazing. Lots of range and power, and a Canadians veiw of America in the early Seventies. This is argueably a folk album, with some super powerful electric moments. And through it all Neil's voice is a clarion call.
