A 3+ Octave Countertenor and a 3 Octave Baritone…both with amazing soul, vocal and breath control…and fabulous overlap on their ranges for harmonizing…one of the most remarkable vocal duos in recording history.
It's that they both have (and use) their range which makes this performance definitive - to even approach it would require similar ranges. Add in Bill's rasp and Bobby's gymnastics and it's an unapproachable target.
My guys! I'm 73 yrs old and this song brings back so many memories when I was 15 yrs old when they came out and swept us teenagers off our feet! Love them! 💞
This song is probably THE classic example of the Phil Spector “Wall of Sound” technique. In spite of his many personal failings, Specter was a genius producer. This in no way minimizes the contribution of the Righteous Brothers, but, as so many things, the whole is much greater than the parts. Thank you for reacting to one of my favorite songs.
Absolutely, I think I remember hearing that Barry and Cynthia paid for their house from the proceeds of this song and credited Spector for coming up with the “bridge” in the track that made it a huge success
Anyone notice at the beginning when Hatfield first stands up, you can see in his face "This is great but buckle up because the ride has just started"? Their confidence, control and talent was remarkable... Thanks Beth Roars, loved it, take care.
Bobby Hatfield hitting those "Bring it on back" lines reminds me a lot of the legendary James Brown. Absolutely mind-blowing that he was able to get his voice to reach that pitch so strongly. The Righteous Brothers were a one of a kind act.
I have been singing this most of my life. As a boy I could do Boby's tenor part really well and sang that part in concert. Then I became a baritone-bass like Bill Medley. That's when I began to really appreciate what a wonderful job he does in the performances and recordings I have heard of this song. I am not as good as Bill but I have gotten applause for singing his part. I do love this piece of music. I sing with it everytime I hear it.
Young lady can YOU believe the music we grew up with???? Songs and performers like this were common. They were on the radio, the TV, the front of magazines, etc... Such great music Thirty years latter and we still listen & watch.
Thank you for your critique as a coach, it is so important to understand the dynamics, and also to know that Bobby studied with a coach for 2 years to fine tune his skill, control the song, and move his jaw ever so slightly. I heard this song on the Andy Williams Show as a young teen, and there many shows of the day like Ed Sullivan, who would support amazing singers; unlike today's over marketed musicians with less talent. Check out Bill Medley's solo of IVE HAD THE TIME OF MY LIFE from DIRTY DANCING, compared with Bobby Hatfield's solo of UNCHAINED MELODY. Bravo to the Blue-Eyed soul of the 60's, instilled in my mind and in my life.
Note that at the time of this performance (1964) Bill and Bobby were 24 years old. Their technical polish as individual vocalists, and as a duo, is even more remarkable considering their youth.
@@rollomaughfling380 This video is indeed synced to the recording by the person who posted it to RUclips, but I've seen the original video of this performance. It was live, with a different orchestral arrangement, but their voices sound the same. In fact their singing was so meticulous, this live performance still syncs perfectly to the record track, even though that wasn't their intention.
The Righteous Brothers are not lip syncing. They were regulars on the great Shindig and sang this song live on the show. This video to RUclips replaced that singing with the recording which was a hit produced by Phil Spector with his "wall of sound", which couldn't be played live anyhow. I personally don't like such manipulation, which is not authentic and causes such misleading confusion.
I remember this song when it first came out. Impressive then and more so now. There is no fackery here. No electronics, nothing. Just a microphone. Having these memories is fantastic. What memories will come from todays music.
Legend has it that very, very early in their career while performing at a small venue a guy in the audience walked up to them and said "Brothers, you guys are Righteous." The rest is history. This is one of their biggest hits, along with Unchained Melody, and {You're My} Soul and Inspiration. I have loved them for years and love your reactions to them.
The legend is true. Bill has said in an interview that they were performing at The Derby in Santa Ana and there were marines there from El Toro Marine Air Base. As told by Bill, there was an African American marine that yelled out, "That was righteous, brother". The rest is history.
Yes, there is a interview with the righteous bros they tell this story, right before Bobby performs unchained melody. Unfortunately most you tubers don’t react to this version with the interview that also explains why Bobby is performing the song by himself. Then without the context RUclipsr reactions asks, I thought there were two.. lol
I'm glad you mentioned the "space" between their voices. It makes it really easy to pick out who's singing what. Most groups, the harmony can get so close that you can lose track of which singer is doing which part, and I've never found that to be the case with the Righteous Brothers. Also, I'm pretty sure every guy my age or older has tried to sing this song. But when we try, even if we can sing the notes, somehow we can't make the music.
Oh yeah, hitting the notes vs making the music. ~~ I sang "Crying" for my "recital" for a voice class at the Old Town School of Folk Music (Chicago) Roy did it in D, I sang in C, I hit all the noes, I did not make the music.
I have heard this song so many times and never get tired of it. I also love watching different people react to it. I've probably been through most reacts to it.
Wow..."That 'space' between them"...I LOVE that I learn so much from you. Not as a singer, I'm 64 now, but just knowing WHY great music is so great and why I love the songs I do. Thank you Beth x
I have always loved this song. The beautiful harmonies of Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield, the delicious contrast of their highs and lows in the call and response segment. Utterly fantastic. I remember how every time we would hear this song on the radio, my mother and I would both sing along--really belting it out in a way we didn't do on other songs. I was able to cover Bill Medley's part very well, and Mum did an amazing rendition of Bobby Hatfield's part. I usually don't like to talk about my own singing as I believe I am now mediocre at best (I readily admit that I had an amazing voice as a child, having impressed quite a few music teachers and choir directors, but since puberty, meh, at least in my own opinion, though a number of people have disagreed with me), but on that specific song, when I would just let go and have fun, really letting myself get lost in the music, and with Mum accompanying me, I have to admit that we ALWAYS sounded truly great.
Oh my God, I’m excited! This is probably my favorite song by the righteous Brothers, something so sexy about the way Bill sings… This was the most popular song of the 20th century for a reason. I also enjoy unchained melody. What voices these men have, yet so completely different!
Beth, Try to imagine this being on mainstream radio growing up. I feel so blessed that this was the case in my life. These men were musical masters in a very special time of song. So Good.... Take care and enjoy.
Huge fan of theirs. This was the #1 song requested to radio stations to play in the 20th century. Incredible timeless song. FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE is actually similar to this, one of my favorites of theirs. Keep up the good work!
You bring such joy to my heart and soul when you enjoy these performances. These men and this song are classic. Such skill and talent. Don't need autotune or other studio tricks. Just great, well written music sung flawlessly. Plus these men had a ton of raw skill and talent. I sound like an old man at times when I say things like today's artists can't even carry these men's water. GOOD STUFF!!!!!!!! I grew up back when this was mainstream. I am blessed.
I love how unafraid you are: to be you, to smile, to dance, your love for the song and immersion into it is why I stick around. And the rawr. And you being an incredibly smart beautiful redhead.
They recorded so many fantastic tunes in the mid 60s, & part of what makes them sound so great is their producer, Phil Spector and his “wall of sound” that enhanced so many other great artist back then like the Ronnettes. Love your reactions!

The living in the sound that Beth refers to is clearly evident in the studio version of this song. In the studio version, this is clearly a Phil Spector wall of sound production. This wall of sound can be found in another RIghteous Brother;s song penned by Carole King, Just once in my life
This is such a great song that from the moment Bill Medley's voice kicks in with the opening note, this became as much a couple of guys with great voices singing to a beautiful girl as it is a vocal critique of a tremendous live rendition of a great song. And for that, thank you, Mr. Medley (my bass hero) and Mr. Hatfield (RIP). You should check out The Righteous Brothers' very bluesy rendition of "I Just Want To Make Love To You." One of my favourites by these guys. And I love that you caught the part that sounded like it came out of "Grease." I instantly thought the same thing. That is so 1950s-early 1960s. Awesome reaction, as usual.
My voice changed when I was around 12yo and honestly it's as deep and probably deeper than Bill's. I don't mind it now (mid 40's) but try calling up a girl your age with that voice when a parent or older sibling answers calling you a pervert and to never call again.
I completely sympathize. My voice started changing in 5th grade and instead of cracking like other kids it would suddenly drop into this Barry White low fog horn sound.

Bobby Hatfield by himself doing Unchained Melody live on TV with his parents in the audience is mind blowing.
A young Cherilyn Sarkisian was one of the back-up singers for this performance. You'd probably know her better as "Cher".
Cher lost that lovin' feelin... a long time ago. 🫣
Was Cher doing this backup here. Sonny did some of the percussion, as a studio member of the "wrecking crew"
Can you point Cher out on that long shot with the backup singers all out there???????
This song is probably THE classic example of the Phil Spector “Wall of Sound” technique. In spite of his many personal failings, Specter was a genius producer. Absolutely, I think I remember hearing that Barry and Cynthia paid for their house from the proceeds of this song and credited Spector for coming up with the “bridge” in the track that made it a huge success
@Miles Doyle you need help.
Specter murdered Lana Clarkson and died in prison.
One of the great "breaking up" ballads. Their pain is so evident in their voices and in the lyrics (I'll get down on my knees for you").
Beth Roars, by far the most informative 'reactor', the most enjoyable 'reactor' to watch (her reactions), and the best looking.

One of the greatest songs ever recorded by the greatest duo ever. Bill & Bobby's voices complemented each other perfectly.

Bobby Hatfield hitting those "Bring it on back" lines reminds me a lot of the legendary James Brown. Absolutely mind-blowing that he was able to get his voice to reach that pitch so strongly. The Righteous Brothers were a one of a kind act.
