I love these knives. The blank is an absolute bargain (68 AUD) and I make my own handles from Australian Hardwood and brass pins. D2 is a great steel and tanto point is strong and durable. I sharpen the blank blade using a belt sander and 160 grit a d 400 grit sanding belt, followed by stopping on a ceramic rod. Razor sharp. Kizlyar Bastardo in Sleipner is a fantastic bowie/ chopper. Extremely heavy 6mm thick steel.
I bought the D2 Satin version of this for 150€ and this is absolutely a keeper. The Kydex sheet is very well made and the knife is a beast. The edge is not as sharp as it could right out of the box. I'm going to need to resharpen it. Just a slight touch needed. Other RUclips reviewers have chopped pretty big branches of wood with it. Abusing the blade without managing to destroy it. I have great expectations for this knife.
I wouldn’t call this a bad knife. It just doesn’t seem to know what it is. Upswept tanto on an outdoors knife? I’d much rather have a bk9 for a knife designed for the purpose with (in my opinion) better materials and features. Personally I do not like hollow grinds on fixed blades at all. Ever. With all that said, if your main use will be slicing through rows of 16.9oz water bottles for RUclips or Instagram this may be the perfect knife 😅
haha! Nail on the head! Agree about hollow grinds on fixed blades and that guard isn't stopping your fingers. That being said, when in hand, I don't hate it. It's in that weird purgatory of mostly useless but still kinda fun to own. Thanks for tuning in man!
@@5MinuteKnives I think fun to own is a totally valid category and reason to own a knife! I have a few that I’ve held on to over the years just for that reason. Keep the vids coming 👍
@@WhispyWoods. I actually did mention the hollow grind (at the end)... I forgot if I did or not. Either way, I gave ya a shout out as the 5MK "All-Star of the Week" in this Sunday's vid- The Current State of Cold Steel. It's a friggin HOUR long! haha
Just ordered the Phoenix. And you're right! Now I find myself looking at their dagger, the "Sensei", and everything else they have that catches my attention!
@@5MinuteKnives Damned with faint praise, lol. But seriously, there are so many variables. Edge geometry, heat treatment, price... If I like the design, and it performs well, I dont mind lower end steels. I prefer them for hard use knives. We tend to to baby our high end super steel knives.
Ive got this one and the senpie both are supercool I was initially hesitate about it due to some reviews on Amazon about missing or missmatched screws and dull blades but I took the risk and Im glad I did they've gone up about 30% since I bought them and yeah the sheaths are nice also. Also considering stipling the handle because it can get slippy, I know that will hurt the value but it helps the grip big time and it looks cool imo. I got the crkt also that line of James Williams knives are fantastic the frame lock folders are supercool and all the fixed blades though expensive are great.
Just ordered the Kizlyar Bastardo Bowie in Sleipnar steel for $144.00 bucks at Chicago Knife Works! If you haven't heard about em, then you should check em out! They really do have great prices on most major brands! All the best! Oh yeah bro, your knife's a "KEEPER"!!! Probably my next Kizlyar... AUS 8 for me though. Florida loves to eat knives!
I bought the 7 inch blade green model in Aus 8, it's definitely a slicer being a hollow grind tanto. It's actually my first hollow grind blade to mess around with.
I think that's called the "Senpai" right? Dude, I am so tempted to buy that one (even though I have no use for it) simply because I think they are cool designs. If you get the larger (Sensei) though, I'd recommend getting it in aus8 (or whatever cheaper steel they use because the upgrade to D2 isn't really worth the extra cost imo. Thanks for tuning in!

Now making a new handle is a great idea!
I have the Bastardo. It is indeed a beast! I'm sure your knives look great with the brass and wood.
The blank blade came unsharpened?
I own the Senpai and it is very functional and also cool.
I was thinking about reviewing that one too...

I've got the Sensei and it rocks as well.

AUS8 is a good steel. Tough, and takes a fine edge.
I don't hate it.

Nice review dude! This little knife seems like a nice choice for harakiri)
lol exactly!
If you decide to keep it just change the handles that would fix your problem.
new handle could look like this ( T )
I made a new one in a recent vid. Great knife!
