Valkyria Chronicles is such a gem. At this point I probably bought it on all platforms possible. One of my top games of all time.
Agreed, just commenting makes me want to playthrough them again. VC 1 had some BS to deal with but Alicia was OP so i guess it balanced out
I did the same actually, and I keep preaching its glory to my friends whenever I have the opportunity. It's my favorite PS3 game by a long shot and I also think it's one of 2008's games that aged the best.
I loved the 4th and I feel it's a shame the 3rd was released only on PSP and especially, only in Japan. It's got my favorite story of the franchise.
I just wish it had a physical release for Switch. I have my original copy on PS3 still though.
Valkyria Chronicles is a top 10 game all time. The ultimate praise for it is that nothing else is like it.
This is a great list. I think Xenoblade 1,2 or 3 deserves a spot here as well for how big those worlds are
I can appreciate those games for what they are, but I just didn’t jive with them like most people have. Same with the Trails games.

I'm playing Octopath Traveler II for PS5 atm, and I fell in love with it straight away!! Music is just awesome, characters etc. Perfect for me! I ordered Octopath Traveler I for Switch just because I love II so much!
I do want to warn you the first game is pretty grindy compared to the second game and has a couple of other flaws that the second game did fix

Big props for featuring valkyria chronicles. 4 was really good as well.
Also, I enjoyed monstrum nox but did feel like it was a little less then 8 sadly.

I prefer ys 8 to ys 9 like this guy said but both are sincerely amazing, cant wait for ys 10 and I hope falcom gets more recofnition for their amazing rpgs in the west.
Finished Valkyria Chronicles for the first time last night it just might be my favorite game now. Love the story and the emotional connection it builds with the characters.
My list would be so similar, except I would remove Ys due to not really vibing with it and adding Xenoblade 3. The big twist of that game and the way everything was connected from the first two games was so wonderfully done, imo. I also haven’t played Chained Echoes or Sakura Wars, so I would swap in Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Honkai Star Rail. Honkai truly surprised me last year with how much content I could play in a mobile game.

Pretty nice list, I disagree with some placements mainly VIIR while I did like it I don't think it is anywhere near Persona 5 and Dragon Quest XI in terms of quality but it is your list. Funny to me seeing some people getting so mad about someone's personal list, lol.
Seriously this. Especially that one triggered troll who keeps shitting on TGS over putting FFVII Remake and Tales of Arise on his list over Trails and Xenoblade.

Also Tales of arise I absolutely love that game. I was so engulfed in it that it's all I could play. One of my favorite games and cast of characters I need to play the dlc for it but I played and beat arise before I got my ps5 so I need to move my saved game over and play the dlc.

When I saw top 10 modern Jrpgs I thought it would be just another generic list but this list had so many different and even niche games. Also really surprised to see ff7 remake at number 1 as many ff fans think that game is not good because it has "action combat" however I really enjoyed it especially the changes to the story. This is how a remake should be and if I want I can still play the original. Great list even saw some games I haven't tried which I might try.
My lists are never conventional that’s for sure haha
So happy to see Tales of Arise get a shout out. Great characters, great story, great message, great world. Easily one of the best in Tales series.

I love how most of these are on the Switch. Just goes to show it's really about the quality of the games.
The Switch has been such a good machine for JRPGs. I love it! Can’t wait for Switch 2 or whatever they end up calling it.

As someone who's played most of these entries, yeah, these RPGs really are top tier. But with the current renaissance of RPGs & 2024 looking promising, you might wanna consider making a list with 20 games Taylor.

Sakura wars is on the best mecha action rpgs I've ever played so far. I'd say megaton Musashi it's a good contender for that title imo. I honestly love the episode format in Sakura wars. And kudos for starting off with 2 Sega gems back to back

It's a shame Three Houses never came with some sort of editor because the amount of character models that fully work in battles or the unused Ridill sword really open the game up

It's terrible. Every single boss fight is completely abhorrent, unbalanced, and broken. Combat in general is just trash.

The subtle background track for each game as you talk about them silently playing as you voiceover was a nice touch. I think I would put P5R over Dragon Quest XI but all of this is personal rankings so I'm not overly offended. Great list and I'm glad Fire Emblem Three Houses still commands the respect it deserves.

Ys VIII is the whole package but Ys IX is so good gameplay wise, Doll is not only best girl but best character, love her attacks and design.

Glad to see Dragon Quest XI so high, would've put it at 1 above Final Fantasy VII Remake personally, DQXI is my favourite game (probably only tying with DQ8), but I love both tons.
Awesome list. My order differs but many of the games are the same.
I’ve not played Sakura Wars, Persona 5 or Fire Emblem 3H. So I would replace those with Trials of Mana, Triangle Strategy and Scarlet Nexus.
Chained Echoes remains my biggest surprise of this decade. I expected to ‘like’ it but fell in love with it.
I agree with you, especially with Scarlet Nexus I really love its combat system
Great list...but for me i will change chained echoes to xenobalde series..the red head protagonist in echoes is just bland and annoying for me especially near end game.
Honestly Yakuza Like a Dragon is one of my favourite JRPG's of all time behind P5R.
I've always heard of ys but never even looked into it, but this video made me pick up origin, 1,2+ and monstrum nox. Cant wait to dive in, I heard you don't have to play them in order as the call backs aren't super aggressive, but I still want to at least play the other games I mentioned first. Thanks for the recommendations. Keep up the awesome work 🫡

Kuro’s not out in English yet so I haven’t played it. Can’t stand the cold steel games so no way am I gonna play Reverie.

valkyria chronicles is GOATED. for me its a three way tie between 1, 3, and 4

I couldn't get into chained echos but I want to give it another try. I was using game pass on my phone to play it and it was playing like crap but that's due to game pass and the Internet connection. I just haven't tried again since. Octopath traveler two is amazing. My favorite game of last year and it came out on my birthday it's like destiny that I would love it.
while i enjoy y8 story more i think ys 9 had way better combat like night and day better and better exploration. also engage was such a heavy backwards step from 3 houses. Fe 3 Houses really had the best balance and overall i found it more enjoyable. it was the perfect balance in the formula.
Man I love Persona 5 I played on PlayStation and have to get it on the switch even the spin-offs got me here’s hoping 6 draws us in just as much
FF7 remake is also my favourite modern JRPG, despite its gameplay pacing issues. (haven't played rebirth yet).

The old games certainly were, but the newest release of sakura wars is just a dating sim with basic musou combat. Not really an rpg. It was fun though
This makes me want to try Ys IX! Hated FF7R though.

6:00 Tales of Arise is the best action RPG in many years. It got the most important parts right - the combat first and foremost is extremely satisfying to master, and each character brings their own satisfying contribution to difficult battles. Be prepared to game over even in the early stages of the game until you get good at combos. But once you do - hitting bigger and bigger combos before calling in a team attack to KO the enemy is just the best. Then the setting - yes the graphics are incredible, colors gorgeous, and also the towns are great too. They could be a little bit deeper than just side quests but stil better than a massive empty lifeless town to beeline to the inn to. Then the story/characters - good point mentioning the end, it was definitely over the top even for a JRPG. Music is fantastic, cooking/other RPG elements was great, sidequests were decent. The cosmetics were a great idea but the actual items weren't my cup of tea, I would've preferred different clothing to say bunny ears or a wolf tail. To summarize: incredible game because they got the most important part right: a fluid satisfying interesting rewarding and deep combat system with great characters.

I'm currently playing the DLC for Tales of Arise and it's...fine...but I definitely wish we would get a proper sequel at some point. It's a great game.

@@tubadude07 If you really like the game's cast and story, and you go in knowing that there's no real gameplay changes, I think you'll have a pretty good experience. Or you can wait for a sale as well.

I really enjoyed Blue Dragon by Akira Toriyama & Mistwalker back in 2007
There is one RPG I love that's not on this list, and that is Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (TTYD). TTYD has the best story in any Mario game. Period. Most of the Mario RPG's are decent, but TTYD takes things to another level. The badge system is very unique because you can change how you play. This is how you get most of Mario's different attacks in battle. There are badges that do extra damage, there are some that give you an ability, there are some that changes your outfit, and there are some that gives you a new attack entirely. Things like a hammer throw or power bounce. Pairing up the power bounce with a charge, granted you know how to execute a power bounce, is probably the most OP thing about this game. I'm looking forward to the Switch remake coming out soon.
Sorry for the advice you didnt ask for, but i noticed that you're using a lot of compression on your mic. Id suggest dialing it down *just* a bit becauaw at times you can hear the artifacts from it leveling out the noise and it sounds unnatural. Its not bad as it is, just a little noticeable!
For your list i respect a lot of the choices you made here. Do you think any of the new Like a Dragon games belong as honorable mentions, or Nier games? DQ11 i can tell is great but the lack of variety in the music turned me off of it unfortunately
Absolutely shocked with no Xenoblade representation. For me that’s easily and by far the best modern jrpg series in gaming. I’d then follow that series up with FF7 Remake and Persona 4 or 5 and Shin Megami Tensei 4 or 5.
For me personally, Persona 5 Royal and FF7 Remake are both on first place.

Im still waiting for my physical copy of chained echos, the problem with these limited run like releases that take ages! Brilliant to see Octopath 2 here, best game to come out last year! Your opinion on Tales of Arise got me excited to play it, tales of abyss be my favorite in the series and if Arise is anywhere on its level id be super duper happy! Man Persona 5 royal is just perfection! missing out on that final extra semester is painful to hear! I'm still disappointed in myself that i haven't played any dragon quest yet.

I agree with most of your choices... that is to say they were all games I liked even if I wouldn't put them on my top 10 list. For me DQXI would have been 1 with Persona 5 Royal at 2. The third and fourth spots would both go to Valkyria games but I'm not sure if 1 or 4 would be higher. After that would be Triangle Strategy at 5, Yakuza Like a Dragon at 6, Fire Emblem 3 Houses at number 7. Rounding out the list I would probably go with Bravely Default 2, Star Ocean Divine Force (the only action RPG that makes the list) and then the last spot would either be Mario RPG Remake or Super Robot Wars T. Honorable mention to the entire Trails Series but it's too hard to pick a single game since the great thing about that series is how interconnected everything is.

Been watching a bunch Top JRPGS videos. I only played FF12 and eternal Sonata.
I bought yakuza 7 3 weeks ago and beat it 61/63. Not doing the tower. But idk what game could top that for the genra.
I know this is personal opinion so I figured instead of saying your list should have XYZ game, Ill just add that mine would replace DQXI with Atelier Ryza 1, Sakura Wars with Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (I agree with others that 3 is probably the better between the two of them but I just liked and enjoyed XBC2 more), and finally would have gone with YS VIII over YS IX, but when it comes to the VIII vs IX debate they are both extremely close for me and VIII just barely edges IX out. Thats not to say I dislike any of the games I would replace from your list, they just didnt hook me as well as the ones I have on my own.
I love takes of arise but my criticism is the final act. They just shove a bunch of lore in the last 2 hours as well as repetitive boss fight that got tiring quick. Other than that loved everything else
Yeah the final act is a bummer for sure.
YS 8 should have been picked over YS9. I get it’s your opinion, but I think the consensus is 8 is a better game overall.

There are a lot on there I don't like but great to see Sakura Wars and Valkyria Chronicles on there.
I actually much prefer Ys Origin to 8, or 9.
I would have FE 3Houses and XCDE up at the top. I also prefer Ara Fell to Chained Echoes too (albeit clunkier).
I would also add Cybersleuth. For someone not massively in to menu turnbased games, Cybersleuth just clicked with me.
I think I am a massive outlier though when it comes to Tales. Zestiria was my fav and I didn't like Arise. Zestiria has one of my favourite OST's in gaming.
Those Omni-Heroes look like League of Legends characters.
Does Sakura Wars for PS4 bear any resemblance to Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love (PS2/Wii)?
I haven’t played that game, but I know there are returning characters from past games. I’m just not sure which ones.

bought a Playstation and ps portral off Amazon yesterday I've always wanted to play sakura wars... always 😊 but I bought this stuff for hell divers 2 and gran blue fantasy relink honestly i won't boot up my pc I'm too lazy

Yakuza Like A Dragon not being on here is preposterous.
Although I agree with number 1 on the list, I can't seem to like number 2 and 3 very much. I finished them, but DQ11 felt meh most of the game, the turning point is great, but there are so much turn downs for me, it was hard to finish it. It took me 3 times starting Persona 5 throughout a year to really get it going. I loved the music and some aspects of the gameplay, but hated most of the dungeons, the weapon upgrade starts way too late and daily activities were no fun for me. I'd change them for Xenoblade 3 and Like a Dragon.

It really isn’t perfect, in fact it has a lot of flaws. However, I can’t remember a game that affected me as emotionally as Remake has. That’s a rare feat so it had to be #1.
Ys 9 is for me also better than 8, between person 5 and Ys 9 you clearly had a thing for gothic stile like me.
If I considered Bloodborne a JRPG it would be high on the list too 😂
All I can say is get Nawi in OMNIheroes.
My main issue with FF7 Remake is that is has a ''style over substance'' problem. Yes it is beautiful to look at and the OST is great, but it 's barely an RPG... Its way too linear
