Radiata Stories is one of my favorite games PERIOD!! There's a point in the game where you have to pick sides, which drastically changes things in the story and the characters you can recruit. You can pick fights with pretty much every NPC in the game. And the best thing to me, you can recruit Lenneth Valkyrie!
I agree with all of the games I have played on this list and I recognize that I am part of the problem in them being underrated for the games I haven't played. Legend of kartia is a truly under rated game, one of my fave ps1 games and no one ever talks about it!! And I'm shocked our guy Eric didn't spotlight eternal poison in this vid.
I played & still have my original copies of Tales of Graces F & Baten Kaitos. I also had Tales of Symphonia DotNW at 1 point, as the only Wii game I owned when I didn't have a Wii. And I completely agree that those games are all criminally underrated. The Shadow Hearts games & Koudelka also deserve some love these days. I would say that Unchained Blades & maybe Infinite Undiscovery deserve a spot on the list too. Unchained Blades because it's probably the best modern dungeon crawler I ever played, even if the Judgment Battles are a royal pain every time. Infinite Undiscovery because I feel that it ended up overshadowed by Lost Odyssey as an Xbox 360 exclusive JRPG.
Especially Abyss, one of their major 'trinity' of games that got so many people across all 3 major consoles into the series. (....and then maybe actually redo Symphonia so its re-releases don't keep getting more and more scuffed due to loss of the original code).
Eric have you ever heard of Sol Trigger on psp? This game was never released in english but it got a patch on the net. I've done it and it's incredible. Also, I don't think I ever heard you talk about Grand Knights History (psp) and Grand Kingdom (ps4). These game are sooo underated and obscure but so good!
Arc Rise Fantasia: Seems like an awesome Wii game that I'm sure will get better once I finally beat the first actual boss. Operation Darkness: A fun romp through supernaturally infused World War 2, that's only slightly less difficult than being under constant fire from an enemy force. Any game where the tutorial mission can, and will, kill you and then kick you back to the main menu is a keeper. Though it was released exclusively on Xbox 360. Seven Pirates Hyper: A very simplistic game on Switch, but it has tons of large, fun, bouncy... personality. Ephemeral Fantasia: Not sure how this PS2 classic could have missed this list, but don't worry. I got you covered.
A friend of mine is a big fan of the Trails series and so after Eiyuden Chronicle I wasn't sure what game I wanted to play, with my game prior to Eiyuden being The Thaumaturge. When I said I was near done with Eiyuden, my friend threw me the first the Trails games! Trails in the Sky, Trails in the SKy SC and Trails in the Sky 3rd... So... I have over 100 hours to play now. I asked him about it as there were so many and he was a fan. Didn't expect it, but not I have no reason to skip them. xD
Regarding the "The Legend of Heroes" saga, if I want to start with the saga, would you recommend I start with "The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak"?... which is coming out this July for Switch? Or does this game also require having played the previous games?
@@lm3603Are you a fan? If i really didn't liked trails in the sky 1, 2 and 3 is it worth it to check out the other games or is it all one and the same?
@@brotbrotsen1100 I'm not sure, Sky SC is usually the game that convince people to continue the Trails series, after Sky 3rd there's another story arc with different characters.
@@lm3603 the sequel to sky got ported or remastered idk on most modern platforms. They look good but are also quite expensive and i really had a hard time with the amount of dialouge in sky which was mostly uninteresting to me especially if it wasn't directly story relevant. So I'm really unsure.
I want to play the Utawarerumono games so badly, but for some reason, they stopped giving decent discounts about two years ago, and now you have to pay for one game what you would have paid for the entire trilogy a while back. Feels like the Dark souls situation all over again.
Trails in the Sky for PSP, I have it on my PSvita &..... I just could not figure out WTH it wanted me to do (still in tutorial) with the damn gemstones?!?!?! I really wanted to play it because I loved trails of cold steel on the vita and it was one of the first games that I had after memories of Celcetta, and everybody told me I should play it and so I did.... Was frustrated about an hour and a half or less, into the game.... any help would be appreciated. Maybe it's something I'm looking at the wrong way.?
If anyone decides to play trails, for the love of Adios do not skip trails in the Sky 3rd. If you fall in love with trails lore, 3rd is perhaps the most important game in the series as it sets up so much in future games. Yes it's different but it's also fantastic and a great continuation of the characters stories from 1st and 2nd chapter.
Radiata stories, breath of fire and lufia 2 are my favourites on this list. I can't bother with much more modern games than radiata stories 2. Radiata stories is the big exception in terms of modern games I loved. Maybe the best and most underrated game ever in terms of jrpgs.
Shining Force remake is a must have for fans. It's much better and easier to get into than the original. Arc the Lad 4 is ps2 gem. Ps2 is a JRPG treasure box.
I'd love to play PSPortable, man. It's too hard to get access to them. PSO/PS in general deserves more single player RPGs. The more modern mechanics would make a cool as heck ARPG. LOVE Star Ocean 6. The main characters are remarkably well expressed. It's reasonable to argue Star Ocean 4 battle system is slightly more clear than 6, even if 6 adds more, but they're both worth playing. What's interesting is how the stories of these two games actually play off each other a bit, and dialogue in late SO6 acknowledges this (mostly because of who you're talking to at the time. If you know, you know). Such as it is, Star Ocean 4 could reasonably have its subtitle be The Satanic Force. :D I've always had issues with Graces' combat, but I can't look at the best freaking title screen and NOT want to play it. :D The trouble is actually similar to many Tales games pre-Arise where the game just doesn't seem to understand how to explain its own combat system. One example is how dodging works. It's programmed to rely on direction, while most games use contact-based systems. If there's one thing I've seen consistently from every game that uses directional dodging, it's the complete lack of awareness that SO many other games use a system that works opposite to theirs. Even Zelda fails to explain this correctly only directing the player to use both dodges without explaining the reason behind it. (Just the other day I told someone who was having trouble this and they had never realized it worked that way before despite being a huge fan.) Other notes about Graces: Future Arc ROCKS and end-of-battle skits have extreme variety and high quality. :D As many issues as I have with DonW, I still find it to at least be worth playing. At least the one game that let you tame Tales monsters had the COOLEST regular enemy in the series and I'm mad that enemy type wasn't used in other Tales games when they reuse ALL of the other enemy rigs pretty much. XD Lloyd wasn't the issue for the returning characters actually. Some of their portrayals just leaned a bit too hard on memey stuff about them. Subtlety isn't exactly Namco's strong suit, but more importantly, some of the old MCs are just badly served in how they play, missing critical moves and often moving way slower than Emil and Marta.
Bam and you just start. Awesome 😂 I am playing Breath of Fire at the moment, and it is fun but DID age poorly. I really dislike looking up stuff, usually there is an NPC that sends you in the right direction, but not here. The hints are very criptic and dont tell you where to head to exactly. The random encounters are way too much, like way too much. It is not super hard, but it feels tedious at times. Trails in the sky is on steam so it is on modern systems.
I know you hate Pokémon, but I definitely recommend that you try Pokémon.Conquest. It is not your average Pokémon.Game it is a strategy r p g. I think the best way to describe it for a person like you would be similar to SMT Devil Survivor with some Nobunagas Ambition taking place in feudal Japan. I gotta feeling that it will be the only Pokémon game that you'll like.
I'd say Shining Force CD deserves a nod. It's both Game Gear games (which are better than the Genesis games) plus extra. I really feel it should be considered the pinnacle of the series and got overlooked solely because of the system it's on.
I like most of the games mentioned in the video. I would consider Wild Arms is just under rated, now the later ones should maybe get some hate. Lufia 1 is criminally underrated, more people talk about number 2. Project X Zone might have had issues due to some of the character models (they tried to sale the games based on those models), also the storry is not really coherent. Star Ocean: Last Hope, my biggest issue with it was the achievements (I do not want to do 10k dodges or run 100km in battles). This is the game that made me not care about 100% achievements anymore, when I did before. Y's 9 > 8, change my mind. To be fair 9 is the first one I actually liked. I am sad we have not seen a direction/button combo system since Legend of Legia and Xenogears in a turn-based game. Yes, maybe modernize it a bit with showing a easy, mid and hard ones that your characters have already done after just one entry. Now my highly over rated RPGs. All the Trails (besides the two you mentioned), Persona (besides 1), and most of the Tails games.
Im a big fan of alot of these titles. Tales of Graces F combat peak! But to be devils advocate, i can see why alot of these games are some what less popular than others. I personally dont believe any game is 10/10, it just doesnt seem possible, theres always something you probably wont like or over time the gameplay loop will become tedious. Star Ocean is cool but the crafting is terrible. Eternla Sonata i loved, but the Ending and some of the storytelling was somewhat strange in places. Grandia 3, combat fun as hell, but story no where near a epic as 1 and 2. Good luck getting a casual on board to play Lufia 2.
Most of Sony's RPG are shut down now, Arc the Lad, Alundra Wild Arms, Legaia. dunno, maybe the direction Sony takes on graphical console seems left these awesome series. not even a remaster or ports are seem planned for these games :(
Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits is such a good game. One of my top ten. Shame it was followed up by one of the worst games I ever played in End of Darkness. So bad it killed the series. What a shame. I Am Setsuna was really good too but Lost Sphear is all that but better. Like the Suikoden II to I Am Setsuna's Suikoden. Devil Survivor 3 needs to happen now. I heard that SeGa wanted to do "Persona" games every year and I really hope they meant "SMT" games in general. In-between SMT 6 and Persona 6 they could do Devil Survivor 3, DDS remakes/ports and/or revive some of the other spin offs like Devil Children to fill in the gap years between the two main franchises. I'd like to add a few instead of going on about any of the others you listed. MS Saga: A New Dawn for the PS2. Fully turn based Mobile Suit based RPG. Game was amazing. It's also quite pricey now. You can mix and match parts between your mobile suits and you have a limited space for weapons loadout. Each pilot has different stats you'll want to take advantage of with what mobile suit you give them and how you customize it. Megaman X: Command Mission for the PS2 and Gamecube. Fully turn based Megaman X based RPG. Game was amazing. Pretty basic RPG for the most part but it's really well done. Yu Gi Oh: The Falsebound Kingdom for the Gamecube. No it's not card based. It's a RTS tower defense mixed with a turn based RPG. You move your characters across a map similar to Growlanser but instead of battles taking place on that map in real time, they switch to a 3 vs 3 turn based battle and the amount of moves your monsters have are dictated by the star level it has. They gain exp and level up stats and increase their star levels. It has two and a half stories that converge into one and lets you carry over your progress between the stories as you'll need to in order to recruit some monsters. It's a virtual world story and the cards are monsters and the characters are marshals of up to three monsters at a time acting kinda like a cross between and Pokemon trainer/Digimon tamer and a demon summoner from the SMT series. The marshals each have "colors" and they work best with monsters of the same color but you can influence these colors to change over time. The marshals can also gain levels and sometimes have abilities that add buffs to the monsters for battle. The monsters can carry up to three items at a time that can range from healing items, armor, weapons and items to fuse with other monsters. Some monsters have special items that only they can use that boost their powers significantly or give them special attacks. Some can even perform unite attacks like in Suikoden. Battles are a bit weird though as there's a point system involved. So you can "win" by killing two of the three monsters and sustaining little damage but the points can sometimes be in the opponent's favor based on a few different things and you'll actually end up losing the battle. When you take over a "tower", you can then purchase up to two different facilities there. Extra healing, defensive barriers, defensive cannons, stores and a few other things. You'll have to open the store in order to purchase the items. You'll have to go out of your way to take over certain "towers" then open their store in order to get the best items. At any time on the map, you can enter the Konami Code to get a bunch of money. You'll have to do it multiple times as it's only like 10K each use or something and you'll need a ton more than that to get the good stuff and money isn't easy to come by otherwise. If a team other than the main hero and boss of the map is fully defeated, they will slowly be able to respawn so you can grind. However some maps are timed so you can't always do this. There's also secret spots along some maps so if you walk over a spot or occupy a "tower" with a certain Marshal or have a certain monster in your team, you might trigger more monsters to join you. Or it can be an extra battle against wild monsters that you can recruit if you beat them. You can also upgrade certain monsters with special items but you'll lose that first monster until you go back through that storyline again and re-recruit the base monster. It's slow and plodding and perhaps a bit boring and less flashy compared to other games but I found it to be very fun. You don't need to know anything about the series either.
Suikoden tierkreis …. If you can ignore some of the worst voice acting from a main character ever…. And constant back tracking then I can recommend it to you

JRPG time
The Shining Force series really needs a revival.
The ending for Tails in the Sky part 1 was depressing. I lost my save file so i dont think i wanna do it again even though i own 2/3
A friend of mine is a big fan of the Trails series and so after Eiyuden Chronicle I wasn't sure what game I wanted to play, with my game prior to Eiyuden being The Thaumaturge. When I said I was near done with Eiyuden, my friend threw me the first the Trails games! Trails in the Sky, Trails in the SKy SC and Trails in the Sky 3rd... So... I have over 100 hours to play now. I asked him about it as there were so many and he was a fan. Didn't expect it, but not I have no reason to skip them. xD
I do wish you would state if it is only NA or not. Im fron the EU and radiant historia is not available here.
Also, note that if you play Radiata Stories Undub (which is much better). The VA for the main protagonist is Naruto.
Regarding the "The Legend of Heroes" saga, if I want to start with the saga, would you recommend I start with "The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak"?... which is coming out this July for Switch? Or does this game also require having played the previous games?
Trails is an interconnected series, I haven't played Daybreak but if it's a Trails game, there will be references and info from the previous games.
@@brotbrotsen1100 Try at least Sky SC and see for yourself if you want to continue, it's a charming game for me.
I want to play the Utawarerumono games so badly, but for some reason, they stopped giving decent discounts about two years ago, and now you have to pay for one game what you would have paid for the entire trilogy a while back. Feels like the Dark souls situation all over again.
Trails in the Sky was localized outside japan as early as 2006 (all for east asian countries though)
Trails in the sky 1 +2 are excellent. I took my time put about 70 hours in each. I love the stories and the characters. It's so good.
i loved radiata back then, there was a manga and i think anime. played it and enjoyed
Wild Arms 2 is superior in every way to 1 in my oppinion
Vandal hearts soundtrack is in my top 5 ever!
Alot of outstanding games
Oh Eternal Sonata that one hurts. I really hope they make the ps3 version remade on pc or nintendo or anywhere eventually. x,.x
How could you skip any of the Front Mission games?
Shining Force remake is a must have for fans. It's much better and easier to get into than the original. Arc the Lad 4 is ps2 gem. Ps2 is a JRPG treasure box.
That’s right
I'd love to play PSPortable, man.
I've always had issues with Graces' combat, but I can't look at the best freaking title screen and NOT want to play it.
(Just the other day I told someone who was having trouble this and they had never realized it worked that way before despite being a huge fan.)
Other notes about Graces: Future Arc ROCKS and end-of-battle skits have extreme variety and high quality. :D
As many issues as I have with DonW, I still find it to at least be worth playing. At least the one game that let you tame Tales monsters had the COOLEST regular enemy in the series and I'm mad that enemy type wasn't used in other Tales games when they reuse ALL of the other enemy rigs pretty much. XD
Lloyd wasn't the issue for the returning characters actually. Some of their portrayals just leaned a bit too hard on memey stuff about them. Subtlety isn't exactly Namco's strong suit, but more importantly, some of the old MCs are just badly served in how they play, missing critical moves and often moving way slower than Emil and Marta.
Yeah I played cold steel Zero and Azure and now Reverie but still no sky
Bam and you just start. Awesome 😂
I am playing Breath of Fire at the moment, and it is fun but DID age poorly.
Tales of graces f for me is the best of the series. Just a hd port for switch would be enough for me to buy this thing again
I highly recommend Jrpg game Recettear an item shop Tale
Happy go lucky action rpg while run shop
Only on PC ( Steam and GOG )
If nobody plays anything else in this list, play Tales of Legendia and Growlanser 4. You will thank me later.
No poplocrois?
Пошел контент! Посмотрим, спасибо!
I see radiata stories I click !!
*This man is on that SH2 hill and I respect that; I don't agree, but heck if yah know how tah plant yourself and not budge.*
I enjoyed the Divine Force
Yeah Soul Hackers 2 deserved better and main character Ringo deserved even more.
Trails in the sky isnt readily available like Cold Steel you need a psp, vita, or a pc to play it
Where's Guardians Crusade?
Only games Erick Landon doesn't like
Soulsborne games
Elden Ring
And constant back tracking then I can recommend it to you
drakengard mentioned
Diofield is a cool concept, but it’s WAY too easy and the writing is lackluster.
I prefer Lunar 2 over Lunar 1.
Radiata is great till the part when you have to choose a side, then the game looks like is rushed and the previous great story goes away!
I like the list but Soul Hackers 2 is not good at all. I agree with all the ones you mentioned that I played except that.
Trails in the sky FC is 40hs like you say
But…. Trails in the sky SC is like 100 hours !!
Having played all the Trails series, Sky SC is one of the best in the series!
