    If you’re really looking into getting into a series with over arching lore and world building over multiple games and multiple protagonists, I would suggest getting into the Legend of Heroes: Trails of _____ series.
    Starting with Trails of the Sky, 2nd, and Sky the 3rd being the first arc. Trails from Zero starts the second arc, the sequel being Trails of Azure. The third arc being the Cold Steel arc, 1-4. As of writing this, the recent release in the west is Trails into Reverie, which is supposed to close the Cold Steel and Azure arcs.

    Dragon Quest 11 is an perfect example of how to evolved the franchise into modern era, while staying true to it's source material and formulaic that's still hold up remarkably well. Yeah. It's simple, traditional & doesn't dramatically change the materials or added gimmicks into the gameplay. But I think it works really well without any of them and the games can still offer some pretty unique challenges. And honestly, I rather have things simple & traditional than something really complex or overcomplicated. The only thing I wish it does better is the soundtrack. Seriously, I respect the composer for given us an incredible orchestrated music that's been going for over 35 years and most of his tracks are good and memorable. But he only makes like 15 to 20 pieces of music in each games that u hear so many times and I wish he made more tunes. Regardless, Dragon Quest is still going strong and it doesn't lose faith to what the franchise is about & what is capable of. Unlike some other RPG'S like Final Fantasy, Paper Mario and Pokemon. It's also an fantastic starting point to those who never played the series or RPG games in general. DQ11 is great.

      I'm inclined to agree but man some of those choices at the end where a little bit too left of field for me and soured my experience, I still liked it a lot but it's not on the level of three houses, the impact and pay off didn't hit me as hard as three houses did, great step in the direction for square though, would love more tactical jrpgs in this style.

    Persona 5 Royal is not just the best JRPG of modern times. It's the best RPG, heck the best game of all time. It's been a while and I've yet to play anything better. I've tried Baldurs Gate 3, and while a great game in itself, I couldn't find myself loving it as much as I did P5R. Characters and stories are important to and I just find Persona's characters so much more relatable than Disco Elysium, BG3 and any other game. Some good picks here, still haven't played most of these. For Dragon Quest XI S on PC, I decided to turn ALL the Draconian restrictions on, thinking initially that I'd just turn off some of them if it got annoying. But at this point, I'm at Arboria, and it's become a point of pride to get to post game with all of them on. I struggled through a lot of Act 1, but now that I have a full party it's smooth sailing. I am however scared of Act 2, so I decided I would farm 99 of every seed I could in Act 1 so if I started getting my ass whipped I'd have stockpiles of seeds to fall back on.
    It's just taken me so long I have been sitting on that and grinding every once in a while for about a year. I farmed 99 Strength and Magic seeds using Hallelujah, then I finally resorted to just finding a mod that increases rare drop rates to 50% to get Sorcery, Therapeusis, Deftness, and Agility. Only Defense is left, and I was about halfway through that when Armored Core 6 came out. I will finish it eventually!

      Unfortunately, every Dragon Quest games has repeated music. It's not just Dragon Quest 11. I love the orchestrated music and many of the DQ songs are great. But the composer just doesn't play an different tune and in such there's only like 15 tracks it plays in each franchise. So yeah. I lobe Dragon Quest. But it needs more tunes.
      Also DQ11 is far from the longest game in the franchise. That honor goes to DQ7 & DQ9. Plus u can skip cutscenes if u wonna keep the pace going.

I still gotta catch all the rare fish before I progress to the next chapter (bcuz completion and missable content). I've done all quests, found all weapons and upgraded most of them, I've maxed out my level, and more. It's been a while since I played so I kinda forgot about most of the game. Kinda forgettable tbh
      In all honestly, the game is alright. It's definitely nothing special. I haven't found myself intrigued in anything, from story to gameplay. It's just kinda plain. I wanna play more of it (when I get that nitro deck) and finish the story. Maybe the A2 playthrough will finally make the game interesting in lore at least
      It's a unique game, but it really feels over rated af to me. I don't understand the appeal. Maybe I missed something? Maybe I haven't gotten to the good part yet? As someone who completed Metal Gear Rising and Astral Chain, NieR Automata kinda lacks. I just don't enjoy it as much as I did the other 2 games

For instance, I rarely play Western RPGs because I just love JRPGs a lot. But from time to time, there are gems that come out that I'm grateful for having tried. I did that last year with Elden Ring and Tiny Tina's Wonderlands and had a blast - especially since both games had co-op! And technically Stranger of Paradise is more Souls-like than JRPG, but I enjoyed it a lot too!

    I bought Dragon Quest 11S (PS4) because I loved Dragon Quest 8 and thought that I'd like it too, and I did, but sometime during act 1 (which took me around 70 hours to finish), I became increasingly bored. I stopped playing it after the part where I had to revisit Heliodor at the beginning of act 2. It wasn't only because of the very emotionless hero or the fact that I didn't like half of the playable characters (the Luminary, Serena, Rab and Hendrik) but also because almost all of the enemies were too easy to defeat, even with super strong monsters. Dragon Quest 8 didn't have any of these problems. It had a much more emotional hero, all of the playable characters were great and the difficulty was good. MAYBE I'll start DQ11S again once I'm finished with my backlog but probably not.

      I wanted to like it. I've tried it a couple of times now as I've got access to it for free (thanks PS+). The problem is that it's just TOO old school. I love turn-based games, and I don't even mind them being very static with little to no animation. It doesn't take a lot to impress me with regards to a solid turn-based system. That said, simply spamming attack over and over, with the occasional magic attack here or there, is so late 80s.
      In fairness to the game, I never got more than a couple of hours in and never got a party. I couldn't even make it to Heliodor I got so damn bored. I've played too many of these games and I'm tired of always starting out with weak ass heroes who are supposed to be the chosen saviors all the time. Give me some fresh gameplay damn.

      @Xoulrath_ That's not really an problem. That's just you being subjective. And that's fine if your not a fan of it. But part of what makes Dragon Quest works is how simple, yet challenging it can get. It doesn't add stupid gimmicks, making different materials or added things that are so complicated or absolutely broken in which u may or may not doing something wrong here, dragging out for no reason or lacks any challenge. Which is something modern Final Fantasy games & Pokemon failed to capitalized. It's also about an grand adventure and exploring strange, but interesting worlds and builting up your characters. That's what makes the series great. If you don't like it, than I understand. But saying it's " too old school " is pretty unfair to complaint.

    • @Xoulrath_
      @Xoulrath_ Год назад

      @@jaretco6423 that is a problem. You telling me my opinion is my opinion is about as obtuse as an internet warrior can get. You for SOME reason feel the need to jump into a conversation betwen two people discussing why the DON'T like the game, then tell them that they are wrong. I TOLD anyone reading WHY I didn't care for the game. YOU not agreeing with MY reasons does NOT invalidate said reasons.
      The reality is that games like Dragon Quest are EXTEMELY niche precisely BECAUSE they are stuck in the past. It IS old school. Not ONCE did I say ANYTHING about mindless busy work or unnecessary crafting systems or anything else. You read into my response what you wanted to, to justify your reply back.
      Sorry dude, but spamming attack/magic, defend, heal is NOT challenging. It IS mind-numbingly boring to MOST people, even a hardcore lifestyle gamer like me. I've been doing the whole gaming thing for 41 years. So yeah, I've been around the block. The same damn game could be played DECADES ago.
      Now I'm not going to sit here and say that people don't still want games like this, because clearly some do. And I'm also not going to be upset at fans of games like this wanting an old-school experience with modern graphics and convenience. It doesn't change the fact that it IS old school, as I've already mentioned.
      I find it fucking hilarious that a game like Octopath II looks old-school, yet actually adds to the genre, while a game like DQ11 looks amazing, but feels like I'm still playing Dragon Warrior on my NES. It's fine if that's what the fans of the series still want after all this time. But maybe don't expect for the majority of gamers to still be appreciative of a game that could have been made easily in the 90s, and even has a mode that allows you to see more or less what it would have looked like.

    • @jaretco6423
      @jaretco6423 Год назад

      @@Xoulrath_ Whoa. Calm down dude. I didn't say u were wrong. But your also not right either. U complaining about being niche or old school isn't entirely the games problem. That's just you. Most RPG'S does exactly as Dragon Quest does, just differently. Also, I like how u compare Octopath Traveler to Dragon Quest when Octopath Traveler or games like Final Fantasy and such does exactly the same as Dragon Quest does like spamming magic and other stuff. So complaining about doing the same magic stuff in DQ, but not to Octopath or other RPG'S that literally does the same thing is invalid.

It is YOU whose opinion was not needed here. Nothing that you said was relevant to the discussion at hand, other than to tell me that my opinion was my opinion.
      Secondly, tell me that you didn't play Octopath II without telling me. The combat system there is NOTHING like DQ11. If you think that it is because it's turn-based, and that makes them the same, then you couldn't be more wrong. I suppose that you're also going to tell me that Persona 5 Royal is exactly like DQ11 too? Or what about One Piece Odyssey? Bravely Default II? Go on, please enlighten me as to how those very distinctive, yet clearly turn-based systems, are exactly like DQ11.
      Games using "magic" isn't the problem. Games using a turn-based battle system with such limited scope that it can literally be found in games made in the 80s is. Get back to me once you've comprehended what it is that I'm actually saying, and we can continue to debate further. But if your third reply to this thread is to simply regurgitate the same thing that you've said twice already, then I'll not bother to engage with you further. In any event, have a good day.

Forcing the player, without warning, to play a specific character even if they never used him, making them undeveloped and under-geared. Characters who just stand there dead in the eye, while easily preventable tragedies keep happening around them over and over. Characters disappearing from existence the moment the camera isn't pointing at them. etc. Yeah, Tales of Arise really is one of the best JPRGs of the modern era! Oh but the graphics were pretty, so there's that.
    Jokes aside, it had a lot of potential, it had an engaging plot, likable characters and a pretty fun combat system, but it all just went downhill as the game progressed.

    YS8 is easily a game that I constantly talk about with my friend and while we do agree that 9 improved on the gameplay front and exploration at times, 8 is just still a better game. 3 houses may have had its issues but there's no denying that it had a lot of interesting ideas that I'm very disappointed never came back into engage and with engage as an anniversary title, it's very disappointing. The only thing that game improved on was the gameplay but the characters and story were weak because of it and I felt nothing. Speaking of anniversary title, the fact that arise is an anniversary title but it feels like there was a lot of work and a lot of effort put into it with the addition of some callbacks is why that ended up becoming one of the best tales games in the series if not the best even with the ability to not have your friends come in and play the game with you with the classic tales co-op. That said I will always love that ability to switch your characters out in the middle of Battle while you're doing combos as it definitely harkens to the Marvel versus capcom games which is why I'm pretty sure that's where Tri ace got the idea for the upcoming star ocean 2 remaster with what that game's gonna do with the cast of that game. Although the thought of Shionne being Tony...... Oh dear God I don't want to imagine her being a drunk lol. Regardless this was a very solid list of a whole bunch of games in the JRPG genre and the good news is we're getting more which is something I definitely give this genre for at least giving us more of what we want rather than given us less of what we want like other genres, I am currently glaring at the first person shooters right now and sports. Great job Alex!
