    TIMESTAMPS
00:00 How did China became an interest for you?
01:43 You wrote 2 books about China. With China's New Normal you truly amazed me on how China wants to innovate. And your most recent book "Can We Trust China? you deal with a lot of misunderstandings. Can you explain more about the title?
06:00 You explain about circles of trust in China. I was surprised not to see the communist part as core circle. Can you explain more about the Chinese family culture and trust between Chinese?
8:40 In your book you compare the Western lens with the Chinese lens. A first one is about the bond quality of products in China. Is that still the case today and why do Chinese believe the West kept China in a straightjacket? How do Chinese look at intellectual property? Did they steal everything from us?
12.14: China is a 5,000 year civilisation. Is this why Chinese feel disrespected? How about the fact that Chinese don't keep agreements? Did Chinese learn from us to get rich? Were Chinese involved in writing the international regulation? Is China more or less open?
17:38 What is impact from confucianism when it comes to trust, relationships and speed? How can they be cautious and go fast at same time? Should we be worried about Yellow Peril that China would want to create an imperial state? Isn't it the West that colonised many countries instead?
Are we living again in a bipolar world with U.S. versus China instead of Soviet Union and U.S. before?
22.27 China has the biggest middle-class in the world. Do they still prefer Western brands or is this changing as well? What do the Chinese consumers want?
25:25 How about transparency of China? Can we trust the data from China? How protected are consumers with their data? Why are Chinese very careful or not transparent with sharing data? How does Beijing communicate with the Chinese citizens?
30:19 What can citizens say and not say? Can people protest in China? What did this mean for China? Are Chinese free at all? Can you explain more about when you talk about double standards the West have when it comes to China?
35:30 Is Xi Jinping similar to Mao? What is Xi or Beijing most worried about? Is Xi mainly providing problems or solutions? You write China sees themselves as a democracy. What do you mean with that? What is the relationship between business and government in China? And isn't China building many not-effective infrastructure and is this a risk for China?
44:30 What is your experience when we talk about human rights in China? What is happening and how is it evolving? Is one of the problems also about how China communicates about human rights? Final question: Can we trust China? And has the West made it more difficult as well to trust China?

“Benevolent Dictatorship” was the term the Banana Republic of America (BRA) coined for Lee Kuan Yew (LKY) and Singapore who took the island from a swampy piece of rock into one of the wealthiest and most modern cities in the world in one generation! China has basically learned from and is broadly following that model after Deng Xiao Ping’s visit to Singapore in the early ‘70’s. He was so impressed by the Singapore that he saw then already. The catalyst was when LKY reminded Deng that Singapore’s majority Chinese population were mostly descendants of mainland Chinese immigrants who made good, what could happen to China when its 1.4b peoples wake up and got going guided by good governance like Singapore’s? Hence, “Socialism with Chinese Characteristics” was born. Don’t worry about “Democracy” or “Capitalism” especially those with special BRA characteristics……….to each it’s own and whatever works is good for its peoples.

The basic issue is if the Chinese prefer their current evolving form of Government why is the West against it? They have seen what the so-called democracy can do to a chaotic society through competition based on sheer money strength. As Kishore said, China never had it so good over the past 2,000 years. Chinese also accept the basic fact that nothing is free in this world, some form of sacrifice has to give way. Hence, they will blend and also compete within their society, often chaotic and always towards their objectives! It is common behaviour even among the overseas Chinese who struggle to amass their riches and then give away their gains to build private schools to provide education to the lesser members of their society.

A great interview. Love the fact that both of you are talking about what is generally controversial and intensely divisive subjects with such a reasonable and fair attitude.
Just a word on "Democratic Dictatorship (民主专制)".
The first of the last two ideograms means "Focus, focused, Concentrate, Concentration, Expert, Expertise, or essentially acts or actions showing dedication and expertise". The final ideogram means "measure and cut or execute; essentially act or actions that measure out and, through faithful execution, bring about the desired result". The ideograms would be better interpreted as "People's Primacy Dedicated Governance". The idea that is communicated is "governance with people's primacy as its aim (please note the term "people," which is not to be confused with "individual"). This idea is simplified by the Communist Party of China in its phrase "Serve the People," or 为人民服务。

Great Interview and able to "understand" the Rainbow in China as well as in our own countries. Faced with the resource and Climate crisis then most existing consumer economies will need to reduce their use of resources, other areas like Africa have still to arrive to a minimum average level of consumption. Globally we need to feel part of our shared realities and ensure our Governments reflect our views rather than autocracies! We do not need Emperors, Tzars, Kings etc but transparent and honest bureaucracies

Enjoyed your conversations very much Pascal! Appreciated a lot to your deep knowledge towards china, subscribed😄except there is one point i can not agree to you when you talk about human rights relates to Xinjiang and HK. Let me tell you my experience from three decades ago: my primary classmate who shared the same desk with me for years, she was from XinJiang originally as she has light brown hair and fair skin, i was so surprised to know when we graduated that she could get into the best secondary school with 10 scores exemption because she is a minority, we heard about it and all accepted it with no problem, do you know why? because we were taught consistently since little that we are families from 56 ethnic groups, and we love each other as brothers and sisters. Literally the so called human right issue is totally different dimension compared Chinese culture to the western, conceptually its just different.

    • @PascalCoppens
      @PascalCoppens  Год назад

I am aware of benefits the minorities get in China as opposed to Han Chinese. Nevertheless, Xinjiang has been target to repression more than in other areas of China. This is what two Han Chinese friends of mine living in the Xinjiang region have confirmed too. To what extent is debatable of course as I also do not believe many stories being read in Western media about Xinjiang to be genuine.

How much can you trust a stranger who you knows little or even nothing about? Someone can pretend and gain your trust fast and easily but cannot withstand the test of time. You learn what is good and what is bad through experience perhaps the hard way. Is this rapport or relationship? You trust yourself and the lessons you learnt. This is human nature of the wise, not that of the fool.

I could give you a long explanation about BRI debt defaults, but reality is that the BRI is a project that has cost way much to China, and a very steep learning curve. China has overreached for sure and is slowing down investment or at least doing better risk assessment now than a few years ago. But the alternative was to invest its surplus USD from trade into buying USD bonds that America would be loaning or using domestically again to fuel its own economy. So investing excess USD in countries around in Southern hemisphere is a second worse alternative on short term, but could be great on long term. I once made a video on BRI ruclips.net/video/SZp0zIr6z3M/видео.html

@@PascalCoppens Sorry I just can't buy your story of milk and honey and goodwill and best intentions, for I too have some idea of how Chinese "think".
Even going by your story Pakistan is a country and place about which the Chinese cannot claim any ignorance of people, culture, geography, other issues. Yet they made it the show case of BRI.
Hambantota port in Sri Lanka was absolutely next to Colombo and had no reason at all to ever be financially viable, yet it was done.
And really you want us to swallow that " it was only commercial" and that Chinese govt was not involved beyond being a "benign indulgent grandfather looking at his children going out to do good to those who were crying out for it".
Yes, there was overcapacity and overflowing coffers with China.
Yes it is a case of learning on the go.
Yes it is a case of ignorance " willfully excercised" of issues with borrowing countries.
But that is all that I find believable in your narrative.
For the rest, it is a very worn out paper over long term malignant intentions.
Chinese state well knew that for foreseeable future the projects were unviable and the loans unserviceable.
It openened up doors to envisioning a way to force those states to toe the Chinese line for a long enough time to overturn the system in place. To allow China to use the muscle to shape the world to its own vision.
A state which allowed or rather encouraged, investment of billions of dollars in projects with concrete viability, cannot ever be so naive as you portray. Frankly impossible even for dictatorships. Even imagining China, a hard nosed, beurocratic and iron fisted country as such a state would ensure me a cell in cuckooland.
