  • Before embarking on a 64-night trip, I took my van and my Go-Pod micro caravan to a weighbridge.
    I wanted to get the weight of my van and caravan separately so I knew how much extra weight I had spare and how much stuff I could take with me on my next big adventure.
    Here's what happened...

    Thanks for reminding people. I used to pull wagons, weigh them, checking axle weights, train weights, grooss weights, tare weights. Engine off, brakes off and so on. Used to check them on dynamic axle wighers, weighbridges, public and VOSA stuff too. The two things that most people forget is their own weight and fuel weight too. I see lots of conversion videos on here, people doing home van builds. I often think that there's no thought put in to what the outcome will be with regards to weight.

    • @Roz.S
      @Roz.S  Месяц назад

      Caravans are deceptive, too. It may have a payload of 150kg but by the time you take into account gas, cushions and bedding, cutlery and plates, food, etc, you've not got much left. Then some people wack a great big heavy awning in the back and they're over the maximum weight. It's very easily done.
      Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Always have spare set in car. Found out by mistake its easy to lock caravan door, I knock latch in lock position then close door, did this few times at home while working on it. Luckily spare set were nearby, now leave van keys in my pocket instead of in van. Easy to leave keys and motor mover remotes behind in hurry. Your bright orange lanyard is good idea. Maybe worth adding Airtag or similar to keyring, then you have fighting chance of finding them.

      I have a constant fear of locking myself out or losing my keys while on an adventure. I keep my van keys and caravan keys separate, each on a different coloured lanyard (it’s unlikely that I would lose both of them, plus they’re easier to spot) but it still worries me 🙈

    Hello you two,
    And off we go again on a great adventure tour. Yes, it's so easy to forget something and you'll end up with a lot of damage and perhaps even trouble. I've gotten into the habit of just standing still and taking a deep breath whenever I'm under pressure or put under pressure and think about it again, so I have everything important together. Regarding the weight, the support load, which is the lowest, is the measure of all things, e.g. the caravan has 75 kg and the car would have a support load of 60 kg, so the 60 kg must be adhered to, and if possible, always make the car heavier than the caravan, otherwise it will make a difference Caravan isn't very easy for you to drive. I wish you a lot of fun and a good time, best regards Oldie👍

    Good for you looking into the weight of your van and caravan, if only everyone was that diligent ! Just came across your channel and have enjoyed your content. I am an expat now living in Canada and have what is considered to be a small 21 foot travel trailer (caravan) coming in around 2,200 KG's with our normal payload. We tow it with a fairly hefty pickup truck which is more than capable of towing a lot more but I did the same as you, I took our truck & trailer to a CAT scale (commercial scale) and the good thing is the scale is split up into different sections so you can get both axles of the truck on one part and then the trailer on a separate part of the scale so I could see what the weight was over the front & rear axles of the truck and then the weight of the trailer. It is a good exercise to do for sure. One thing you should take into consideration is that whatever the tongue weight is of your loaded caravan that needs to be added to the payload of the tow vehicle. I have seen so many people with completely inappropriate tow vehicles whereby the tongue weight of what they are towing probably maxes out the payload capacity of the tow vehicle and that is before you add all the passengers, pets & cargo which basically creates a very unsafe situation.
    Again good on you for doing your homework, the most important thing is that you and your precious cargo stay safe at all times. Looking forward to your trip videos.

    That's the trouble with caravans, most have a ridicously low payload and most people put way too much stuff in them. I've seen caravans with such little payload that just putting the awning in maxed it out. Also most people don't realize that the advertised empty weight, excludes things like matrasses, water, gas, cushion etc. Our teardrop weighed in at 550kg empty, that leaves us with 190kg to play with. But we travel with two teens, and food alone takes up a lot of that and we have a small car so we have to be careful.

    Always good to have a spare set of keys hidden on your vehicle. Do not use one of those magnetic boxes, they do not last. Use a real caribiner. Not a cheap tiny one given out for free. Buy a real mountain climbing caribiner. Not locking as the locking mechanism will rust / oxidize and be filled with grit making it impossible to open after a few months on the road.

      Hidden ON my vehicle? 🤔🤔 Where could I hide them? 🤔

      @@Roz.S Attach to your van's frame. Somewhere it will not dangle to the road or interfere with anything mechanical. Your mechanic might find it though that does not matter as your mechanic does not need keys to be able to steal your van. There are usually miscellaneous dill holes in the frames of vehicles. The location can be difficult to reach, you just need to know the keys will be there sometime when you need them. Do not attach to something that can break off like a bumper or tire. Do not use plastic zip ties as the plastic will eventually become brittle and break. Looks like RUclips has suggestions. This looks OK though I would be very carful about drilling into anything.ruclips.net/video/44Golw46PHk/видео.html&ab_channel=POWERNATION

    2:49 Your full size spare wheel -- will that sub for both the van wheels and/or the caravan wheels? 12:43 I love that the first 'additional item' you calculated to add in the van is Winston ❤

    • @Roz.S
      @Roz.S  Месяц назад +1

      The van has a spare wheel in the back, and the caravan has its own spare wheel under the chassis 👍🏼 I forgot to point that out in the video 🙈
      Winston is something that was definitely coming with me and I could leave at home 😂😂
      Thanks for watching

    I really fancy I micro van being single but I have a petrol berlingo which is 17 yrs old and I find the brakes so inferior to modern cars. I have changed every braking component on the car but still feel it is poor compared. I think towing would be a Nono. Such a shame as the vehicle itself is marvellous. Says it can tow a ton. Good on you for checking

    • @Roz.S
      @Roz.S  Месяц назад

      Pods are classed as 'breaked trailers' which means that they have their own breaks. When I break in my van, the Pod applies its breaks as well. Your van's breaks are still going to be under more strain when towing, but the Pod's breaks do help out 👍🏼

    Don't you love people that answer 'Yes' to anything on the phone knowing that they haven't actually got a clue.
    They owe you an apology, not the other way round.

      Thank you. I did ask them before I went there if I could unhitch and they said yes, but they failed to mention that the weighbridge was right near the entrance and I would have a queue of larger vehicles spilling onto the road 🙈😅 but we got there in the end 👍🏼 Thanks for watching.

    We just got our Gopod can I check what nose weight should be as Gopod site says (Nose weight 54 with front box or 49 without ). I think you said up to 75 on video

    • @Roz.S
      @Roz.S  Месяц назад

      The "Nose weight 54 with front box or 49 without" is the nose weight of the caravan when empty. If you look on the hitch of your caravan, there will be a chassis marker stamp. The weight next to the letter "s" will be the maximum nose weight. On mine, it's 75kg, but double check your own stamp 👍🏼
      Hope that helps.

    • @Bijou_Voyager
      @Bijou_Voyager Месяц назад +1

      Many thanks 🙏 I’ll have a good look at it when back home . I know our new detachable tow bar has a max 75 kg vertical load

      @Roz.S  Месяц назад

      @@Bijou_Voyager Double-check it as I could be wrong. I will double-check mine, also. (I hope I'm not wrong, as I don't think I could get mine down to 54kg with a full gas bottle in the box 😅 It's just under 60kg before I start to pack it 🙈)
