Where would we all be without Randy Pobst.
in a hedge somewhere. :)
+George king lmao! Indeed...
+Furuya Go In a ditch. From heel toeing incorrectly.
This show is too good, it cracks me up every time :D
+Daniele Dal Col So many dad jokes
+Daniele Dal Col Randy is pure gold.
***** what's a narc?
+Daniele Dal Col probably means the narcotics investigators (undercover cops that deal with illegal drug activities) otherwise known as the DEA in the US
Daniele Dal Col
This is such a great addition to the MT RUclips line up. Randy is the consummate professional even while portraying an idiot. Love the production and content delivery of these videos, very informative, interesting, and satirical at the same time. Well done!
MT doesn't need the other clowns anymore, just make everything with Randy and the Roadkill guys
+Daniel Maia Head to Head are the only reasson I sub this channel...
+Chrstian “Driver” mrclep I actually like these videos with randy, they are very informative and entertaining. But it must be said that MT has been seriously slacking this year on its ignition and Head2Head series. Those where the only reasons why I started watching them. It's their bread and butter, last 2 years were great......What happened this year? Hoping next year will be back to the good stuff.
+Daniel Maia I also like Dirt Every Day.
Let's just get along and agree that MT ROCKS!!
+Daniel Maia TRL, Dirt every day, Ignition, roadkill ... they're all awesome!
MT just rocks, period.
I'll take manual any day. It's a couple of grand cheaper than the auto, which can go towards insurance or fuel, and best of all, my auto driving mates can't borrow my car!! MWAHAHAHAHAHA
+PT111111 you have friends that don't know how to drive manual?? even when I've chosen my GF i made sure she knows how!
-Friend must be SWAPPED.
David MuscleGuy I can't complain really, they're good people and they can't drive my car. Win-win situation for me. :)
+David MuscleGuy Swap friend, replace with SR20DET
+PT111111 Lol dodge charges for a manual now, what a fuckin joke, charging for a manual in a muscle car.
mkelebay Are they serious? They're charging more to put in a simpler, cheaper gearbox to produce in their car? LOL
bill nye of racing
I was abou to type dat XX
Alton Brown as well?
Pobst still has yet to do a song and dance about Automatics being as fun as manuals. Once he does that then, and only then; is he the Bill Nye of Racing.
Big fact.
Its not Bill?
this guy can fucking drive , dem lap times
+NoSpace4Bass
Welp, he's the professional
+NoSpace4Bass welp, dem lap times seriously gud
"Tell the President I'll be there as soon as I can" - Classic. Good one Randy.
If HE a pro still couldn't pass the time of the automatic... none of us in the comments can. But he almost beat it. It was super close. What a beast.
6:11 he's pushing the brake but they are playing an acceleration sound clip? XD
Lol Yes, I didn't notice it myself.
Yeah, seem to be a lot of gci in these clips as well. wtf is going on.
RANDY!!!
lol this is how i always comment too
Thank you Motor Trend for bringing Randy Pobst to the public for what he was really meant to do... host TV shows. Mylanta this man is hilarious and I enjoy him every time he's doing ANYTHING. Even when he's being serious he's a joy to watch.
A third leg, Randy? LOL! So are you saying that men are inherently better drivers than women? WOOT!! Great show! Keep em coming!
this series is so fun and awesome. I'm always trying to explain driving to get buddies into it. These are straightforward, clear, and fun at the same time. Glad finally someone is doing this.
I love this series.
Thanks, Randy!
Randy was born for this stuff! He was always enjoyable to watch in post race, but now he's in his element!
What an excellent series! I hope to meet Mr. Pobst one day, he is great in all of the MT videos!
I reckon Randy is an excellent asset of the Motor Trend 's payroll. He is charismatic and easy to relate to. It's nice to see him being given more screen time then just the hot laps of every car review.
Dear Randy Pobst and producers of Racing Line. You folks need to stop making short videos and make and show!! I learn and laugh hard every show and love these. I look forward to these little videos as much as I'm looking forward to clarkson, Hammond and mays new show coming out. and that is no joke. thanks for the laughs, entertainment and the education too. looking forward to the next video and hopeing for a TV show lol
Thanks a lot Randy! This was a great episode and as a 14 year old gearhead I don't want to lose the tradition of shifting with a third pedal, and thanks for explaining heel-and-toe, this explained the MANual like no one else has 👏🏻👏🏻
Sorry, already learned how to heal toe from Initial D ;)
Carbon Is Initial D a chiropodist then?
Haha it's heel toe not heal toe
now you need to learn to spell. heel*
omg y'all dumb, he said that he learned how to heal toes because he watched Initial D, a medicine anime
@@Furo6448 HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Man, giving this guy a show is the coolest thing to happen to RUclips in a long time!
Randy is MT best investment, Randy is fucking awesome.
Thank you motor trend for giving free racing classes for everbody. Its always nice to get new knowledge everytime racing line shows up. :)
Anyway, Randy Pobst is a good teacher and is easy to understand what he teaches. :)
product placement done right.
I LOVE RANDY POBST. DON'T STOP THESE VIDEOS. THIS IS BECOMING MY FAVORITE CHANNEL JUST BECAUSE OF THIS COOL DUDE. Sorry, too excited and went all caps.
Love this series so much. Randy is great. And I love my manual car!
Good job. This "tutorials" are always interesting and very visual, even for people that already know how to do this.
Long live to the manual gearbox!
Sounds like Skrillex's early tracks during the manual hot lap
Definitely heard some bangerang
This is probably the best explanation of heel toe downshifting and rev matching I've seen anywhere. The only better one was an old Best Motoring episode... And I've been watching Randy Pobst on the track for years in SCCA events. He was always professional and personable. Great RUclips series.
Randy is the man.
This is the best shifting video I've ever seen, so clear, perfectly presented and killer info.
Now I'm not saying the automatic is slower but in the manual, he was constantly breaking loose into a slight drift on the corners which would make him slower.
This is the best video I have ever seen explaining how to shift gears properly, thanks Randy.
why do I even watch this, I have a Kia Picanto -_-
I have a Tahoe lol
cruze that is a manual here lol. love my car tho
gamercalvin i wouldnt mind anew one
DoobieR mines a 2011, only 23,800 miles on it.
gamercalvin mines 02 it has 201,700 miles on it lol
really love these type of educational videos, they so funny yet so much informational, and covers each and every bit of the topic............nice work MOTOR TREND for these "The Racing Line" series
Immediately clicked this video because the Cadillac thumbnail looks so damn good!
same here, what kind of car is it? obviously a caddy, but what kind?
Randy Pobst is a great driver and host! I can watch these all day
this is top gear tier content guys- great job
+Durodes Duvo no this is better than top gear.
Motor Trend on RUclips is the best thing to ever happen to humanity.
OMG, is the baby OK?
FUCK THE BABY!
+allcarguy dude, is the car OK?
+chp1593 rip in peace= rest in peace in peace LOL
+ST3ADYxKICKS don't try to understand, it's just a shitty internet joke.
+chp1593 that is sick.
Honestly this is one of the best series ever anywhere
the "smack.." cracked me up lol
Love the video. As a driving instructor for a local racing organization, you guys nailed it.
my girl also thinks having a third leg would be helpful
nicely said, I learned to drive in a manual minivan and have driven manual cars since. bliping the throttle not only helps the car, it sounds cool.
thanks for the awesome video.
Insane in the membrane!
You're insane, ain't got no brain!
I just found this Series, I had no idea this was even a thing. This video is exactly what I was looking for when learning how to drive manual.
No, this video is exactly what you are NOT looking for when LEARNING how to drive a manual.
Saša Barišić what?
Well, besides basic shifting, this counts as an advanced driving technique so to say. You're certainly going to fuck up if you go straigt to copying this video if you've never driven a manual.
+2juicedforme + Saša Barišić Sasa is correct, this is for advanced manual transmission driving. You must start with basic clutch engagement, and add this to your training as you learn the fundamentals.
Randy is awesome! haha
Love it. These videos show a side of Pobst's personality we don't get in all his other video parts.
Every time the manual trolls come out to play. I have driven manuals my whole life including semi trucks. A good dual clutch in a sports car is a dream come true. Embrace the future and say goodbye to the manual. It's going to happen!
Randy Pobst, not only a professional driver but a natural host. Great work
1:15 Why don't you just brake and then just heel toe downshift directly to the gear you want? In this case start braking when indicated and then shift to 2nd before turning? Why run through 4-3-2?
+maxpowers3732 You want to keep the revs in the powerband. If you went from 4-2, say, you'd have to let the revs go down more in order to shift into second without over revving the engine. Also, this would require more of a blip. Its easier to just heel toe a couple times.
+maxpowers3732 because the speeds of the gears aren't equal if you went 4th to 2nd
it would cause the car 2 lurch (like at 2:32 ) because the 2nd gear syncros don't have enough time to work
hence why making the trans and engine speeds match in downshifts is so important
it has nothing to do with the power band.
+SANIC No, you're wrong. The synchros will gladly go from 4-2, the transmission can skip gears easily. This is actually what allows people to "money shift" and over rev the engine. If you incorrectly match revs when you de-clutch you will shift lock, locking the rear wheels up. You don't shift from 4th to 2nd on track because it wouldn't make sense to do so with an H pattern, plus it's just easier to rev match into each gear one gear at a time than do one big rev match (you get the benefit of engine braking as well).
Of course gears 4 and 2 aren't spinning at the same speed, that's what the synchros are for. But the same can be said about consecutive gears, like 4 and 3.
Brendan Boutilier i really don't have time to explain why ur wrong.
just google it and save me the time
K thanks.
SANIC
Randy is a star - great driver and great instructor. Keep the greatness coming!
The biggest fear i have, (I'm a pretty skilled, fast driver (I hope i don't sound arrogant here)) is that i accidentally shift for example, like Randy explained in the end, from 5th into 2nd or from 4th into 1st, so that i rev the engine way too high and fuck up my car or someone else's car. ^~^
+J - DAWG Bullshit. Even the worlds best drivers make mistakes and crash their car.
J - DAWG
Yes they do
Rally drivers are some of the most excellent drivers in the world and every once in a while, they'll do it.
Hell, everybody who drives a manual has done it.
those race car sound fx Randy does in the beginning is priceless...gotta love the guy
*AUTOMATICS SHOULD ONLY BE ALLOWED IN FIREARMS!!!*
+seitaneddy Or to disabled people who physically can't drive manual.
kirbyswarp You could probably be right, but... if someone is disabled, or has physical problems, maybe.. they shouldn't drive at all.. I'm just saying, Taxi, Uber, whatever, there are safer options, than putting a physically challenged person behind a wheel...
seitaneddy Some people are just missing one foot or have a prosthetic leg.
kirbyswarp Precisely my point! I don't know about you, but I wouldn't feel safe stepping into a car with one legged driver... And I really don't wanna sound like a douche...
seitaneddy I guess, but there are enthusiasts who lose legs. Let them drive.
This show is simply great, Randy is my hero.
Tires can't multitask... Meaning FWD are murdering innocent rubber.
And I can smoke easier with an Automatic? You have yourself a sale.
huh
The contrast between the music in the manual vs auto shots was perfect.
i 'd like to see something about FWDcar not just RWD... here in europe we have lot of them
this is hands down the most fun show on the Motor Trend channel
Randy,is the best!!
Such a cool series, this episode was so much fun, this is the kind of videos car enthusiast were waiting for, whether or not they experts or beginners at shifting.
As someone who sits in traffic almost everyday coming home from school on the freeway, I have never thought "Man, I wish I had an auto." Buying my Mustang GT with a manual was the best car decision I've made, and I would never trade it for an auto. Does traffic suck? Yes. Is your automatic half a tenth of a second faster 0-60? Possibly. Is driving an automatic near the experience driving a manual is? Not even close.
LOVE THIS SERIES. it's never too cheesy
I wish you wouldn't' had ended the video with a blanket statement that "automatics are faster around the track than a manual." Because, while that may be true for some automatics like a well built twin clutch setup, it certainly isn't true for all cars, especially less expensive ones. And some cars' CVT transmissions cannot even endure more than a few minutes of racetrack driving at a time before high transmission temps cause the electronics to put the car in a low power mode.
Randy is by far the best employee of Motortrend. No doubt about it.
Autos are boring. When I was a kid and saw a cool car I would walk up and look inside to see if it was a manual.
Every time I saw that god awful auto selector it was such a let down and I would lose all respect for the car and owner.
I still do it today. I dont care witch is faster.
M AR but man, they dont even make manual when the price comes to 200k or above. The more expensive(the more performance) the less pure manual. So your current opinion is only suitable for normal cars. Its still respectable for people or racers who know how to drive fast with paddle shifter.
Shepherd Yannis but not every cool car is over 200k, there's a lot of sweet rides over 30k
haha I do the exact same thing. I just cant do auto and get upset when I see a monster of a car in an auto.
lol then ur immature... basic respect for what the owner prefers and chooses to do with their own car is the key to keep car culture alive, u can have ur own opinions, but don't force it on other people, do it on ur own car and be happy with it.
Happy Bear Absolutely. Real car enthusiasts respect another owners car regardless of taste.
You don't see anyone driving manual on racing circuits for a reason. It's all Dual Clutch. Why would you want to shift when a computer can do it faster then a human can blink?
I have both learnt and laughed so much from Randy's videos.
Why can't this become a proper tv show like TopGear or have it on Netflix, it's too good
Randy is great. He is so much fun. Keep this up. I learn something on every episode.
But I do have a 3rd leg its right here.
Randy Pobst is a great car show host much better than any MT has ever had and frankly can compete with the best of some major networks
Came back to watch this video because I bought a 2018 mustang 6 speed
This is the best show motor trend has love randy he's really the BOSS
Automatics are for people who don't know how to drive.
+Cloud Crossy so...you have a manual...
+Will James Agree with Cloud Crossy. Don't think you're better than everybody just because you know how to drive a manual. I drive a Mini Cooper S ofc with manual, that's so easy to heel 'n toe that I do it without thinking, even in traffic. But I'm gonna buy another car, just for the auto. Because when you just have to drive from one place to another, through traffic or on the highway, the manual has zero advantages. If you like clutching constantly in traffic then help yourself, just don't come tell me I can't drive just because I like to relax. I am 10 times faster than you.
+Will James Or the steadily increasing number of people coming home from war missing a limb. Because if you haven't got 2 legs and 2 hands, driving a stick isn't really an option.
That makes no sense whatsoever. But to each their own.
+Cloud Crossy Dude chill
This is like a science show for kids. Very informative but just plain and simple, so that everybody understands it.
Could you guys please run these cars for 10-15 laps. Sure the conventional auto (non-DCT) is a few tenths faster for a single hot lap but what happens over the course of 10+ laps? Is the advantage still there or has heat killed that advantage? If auto's are so much faster then why don't we see them in racing? Why learn heel and toe when you don't need to?
In a way we do see them in a racing. Notice randy put dual clutch in the auto category. I think it's being considered a manual only if it's using foot operated clutch which is too slow.
Autos are in the majority of racing today. Maybe you're thinking about Nascar.
+THEASSOSIATION That is why I phrased my comment that way. A DCT has more in common to a manual then a conventional automatic. The car tested here was NOT a DCT but a conventional automatic what many call a slushbox. Randy may toss them in the same category but they are totally different. In recent times these reviews have convinced the less knowledgeable that a slushbox is quicker over a manual on the race track. I agree for a few laps it may be but how about for the entire race? Will it keep it's advantage or will heat come into play and make the shifting sloppy and slow the car down? I love these video reviews but hate reading the comments "they tested the manual, the auto is faster!" If they are so much faster why has no race team that I know of used a conventional automatic?
+Bill Panop you're right, heat can develop but that's why they have transmission coolers. I'm not sure of the correlation between a DCT automatic and a conventional one in terms of heat difference though.
+CeeStyleDj Conventional Automatics with a torque converter aka slushbox or Dual Clutch (DCT)? They are totally different animals? What racers use a a slushbox? Nascar uses 4-speed manuals.
Best racing line episode yet. Good job Randy!
You couldn't pay me enough to drive automatic.
or leave ur sister alone...
+GT6SuzukaTimeTrials i'll give you $100000000000 if you'll drive automatic. never mind, you don't want it anyway...
Reinturtle I meant to say that you couldn't pay me enough to give up driving manual transmissions.
GT6SuzukaTimeTrials i get it, just messing around :P
+GT6SuzukaTimeTrials Or if you had to actually drive somewhere, like 30.000 miles a year like I do, you couldn't pay me enough to drive a manual. I am a racecar driver that races an H-pattern manual BMW 3-series GT4 racecar, but on the road, what's the point??
Randy, you're a natural mate. Love watching your videos
I got a third leg😏
Randy was born for this!
music at 6:31 plzzzzzz
Randy is a fantastic host! Love the energy!
What if i have a 3rd leg?
Use it! :)
lmao
Check with the doctors to see if you're from another planet
You can impress the ladies with something else rather than driving.
i just love Randy he's the most talented presenter!
"if youre a racing driver you better know how to shift a gear"
Well its less knowing how to shift than when to shift because lets be honest there is no "how" due to sequential boxes that are used in all major racing series even down to club level most modern vehicles use sequential boxes
I was about to write the same xD
Please never stop making these.
For 3 tenths of a second difference < All the fun of a manual.
American Justice < all the convenience + performance of the auto
I know that we were saying give Randy his own show for so long, but now that we have it, its so addictive that we need more releases :) So I am going to take this to its logical conclusion, RANDY FOR PRESIDENT!!!
its intersting how people become lazier every day becouse of technology. Its not supise that 70% of americans have problems with weight
+Montenegro Montenegrin spoken like a true Montenegrin :P
And it's not surprising that you can't spell.
+Shpendi Azizi LOL :)))
True. I'm American and I can't agree more.
+Ken Porter
Very surprising indeed since he is a native speaker!
I know how to heel and toe, been doing it for years, but I still watched just for randy and his banter, guys a lot funnier nowadays and I like it!
It's sad that so many people think that manuals are still superior to automatics, it's not like the slushboxes of old, people, automatics, even torque converter ones, will still shift faster than the best of drivers, and adding in computer controls that know exactly when to up and downshift, yes manuals are more engaging to drive, I can't argue you that, but what I can argue is that slushboxes are still "slushboxes", they are clean, crisp, fast, reliable, and with modern torque converters loose a negligible amount of power. Sorry enthusiasts, the days of the stick may just be coming to a close.
+AfterDark3 Then explain why F1 cars have a manual transmission.
***** They don't, they use a Dual Clutch AUTOMATED manual, there is no driver interaction with the gearbox except the paddles on the wheel.
AfterDark3 But they could just as well have fully automatic gearbox with no flappy paddles or anything, right?
***** They might just aswell, but DCFP gearboxes allow control over the revs, which very experienced drivers, like that in F1 will use the engine to brake into corners, which fully automated manuals will not allow you to do, its the one way to get control over a automated transmission. Its the one thing that computers can't do for you, predict what gear you need for a corner.
+AfterDark3 And this is why manuals are superior to automatics as long as you don't drive like shit.
Wow, Randy is such a cool host. Also, the overall production of this episode is absolute kick ass. Motor Trend gets better and better, please continue.
Driving an automatic says a lot about a man. Like "I'm not one".
+Enzo Corona People from the 1920s: A real man rides horses. Driving an automobile says a lot about a man, like "I'm not one."
+Enzo Corona That is true, the only goodside about automatic is traffic jams though, other than that is just bullshit
Real men turn off ABS.
Only 3 episodes so far and this is one of the best MT shows.
You have no idea how much I learnt from this episode. keep up the great work!
Such a good series. Educational & entertaining at the same time!
