- This 2nd Chapter of MESA’s 50th Anniversary Celebration finds Founder and President Randall Smith sharing his perspective on the impact of his landmark discovery, the cascading High Gain preamp and the contribution the MARK I became to guitar amplification. Throughout, numerous Guitar Greats reflect on their first encounter with this game-changing and pivotal MARK I’s performance. Randall also shares the passion that drove him on to continuing refinement throughout the MARK II’s evolution during the 1980s.
In this series of short videos, Randall and iconic guitarists look back and touch on the things that first drew them to the “Family” and share what the amplifiers have done for their playing and their music. From the early inspiration and beginnings in the late '60s and early ‘70s, through the “Big 80s” and Guitar-Culture sea change of the 90s, up through the new Millennium and today, Randall and his team of fiercely passionate “band mates” as he calls them, have contributed every major feature found on modern amplifiers and a universe of iconic Tone to the sound of the electric guitar, changing it forever more.
From inventing the pivotal High Gain Preamp in the first Mark i's, to Footswitchable Modes and Effects Loops in the Mark II's, to Multi-Channel/Multi-Mode Preamps in the Mark III's, IV's and V's and Dual Rectifiers, to the several patented tunable Tube power, wiring and operating class configurations found throughout, the innovation and pioneering spirit has remained at the forefront of the small Northern California Company’s ethic.
Enjoy this up close and personal look into the history of MESA/Boogie with Randall and company highlighting points along a 50-year journey that would lead to MESA's cult status leaving an indelible mark on the sound of amplified guitar and modern music.
Alright already.....develop a Mark IIC++ James Hatfield signature head.
There's a John Petrucci 2C+ Signature
Hetfield*
The Mark IIc+ circuit is on the Mark V, as well as the Mark IV Extreme circuit. Can you dig it?
Supreme Commander of the Solarverse yup, and there’s also the JP2C! However, James did not play a IIC+, he played a IIC++, which is why we still hope someday we will get the real deal artist series tribute amp for the man that has influenced more metal guitarists than anyone else on the planet. It would sell INCREDIBLY well. Please Mesa! Please! Take all that knowledge that Mike B, uses to mod the countless IIC’s and IIC+ circuits mailed in to you guys, and give the world a gift!!!
Daniel Hall the ++ "Mod" this clown refers to was the larger head dimensions and the fact that the presence and reverb controls were swapped with the reverb being out back or removed entirely pee swapped out with a presence control. His"crunch berry" amp wasn't a ++. Fail
I see James Hetfield, i click with no remorse
No Repent
like that!
Lol, me too.
Did the same thing ; even with no battery
I only listened to James and Kirk. Skipped the rest. Even JP.
The signature Hetfield head should be called the YEAHSA Boogie
I heard that in the voice of Jim Bruer 😂
huhauhauhauhauhauhauhauhauhauhauhauhauhua
The Ooooh Yeh heahhh Boogie.
James is why I know of Mesa boogie and still want a mark series amp.
Bryan Lettow i used to own a Mark IV and now own a Mark V and I can honestly say they’re all killer🤘🏼
@@christophermarshall1441 which one do you like the most the Mark IV or the Mark V?
James? I had no idea he used Mesa till now. I knew them from John petrucci.
You can hear the tonal change after Lightning with James' shortly thereafter stolen Marshall, to the modded Mark II C on Puppets.
Abdulla Noor yeah apparently he used a modified (a friend did some voodoo magic work on it) Mesa boogie that was used on ‘and justice for all’ had that aggressive sound.
Mesa Boogies famous is all about Metallica and James Hetfield, EMG's and ESP also
What...dude come on. Yeah Metallica is probably there biggest artist but there's also Tremonti...cannibal corpse...lamb of God...dream theater...buckethead jeff Loomis if I'm not mistaken still plays mesa boogie. And as far as emgs go...I can't even begin to name all the artists that play emgs I kinda agree on the esp ones though. If I'm wrong about any of those guys that I said plays mesa boogie correct me...they change gear so much.
Andy Timmons
@@ensleywyatt3957 What he was saying is that Metallica made Mesa's famous. Those other bands and players you mentioned came after Metallica. Puppets and Justice brought Mesa's into the spotlight.
some love for Kirk 🤘🏻
❤💪
Metallica and Lamb of God are the reason I know about Mesa/Boogie and are the reason my first proper tube amp will be a Boogie!
Did you ever get the Mesa amp?
I wish someone would cough up the Marshall amps they stole from James Hetfield...
Mesa Engineering should do a James Hatfield signature head... I'll buy it after I save up for a YEAR... LOL
4 channels, each album is a channel
That would be f*ckin SICK!!!!!
He is playing a Diezel VH4 for many years
Get a better job
Santa Klaus Guitar Actually, he’s been playing a combination of MK IIC+ and VH4. Nowadays he uses those amps in Axe FX format
Petrucci gave us the jp2c...
We now need the JHCrunchberries model please!!! My life will then be complete!!!!!!!! Who's with me!!!!!!
ME!!!!!!!!!
100% brodozer.
SImple man here. I see James - instant like
Brad Gillis used Mark II C’s on Speak of the Devil. His tone was killer on that album. Especially on Symptom of the Universe. That was before John Petrucci and Metallica. He should be a part of this series as well.
yep. agreed.
Now THAT is an interesting fact. No wonder that album somehow manages to sound as deadly as Sabbath but in a different way.
I TOTALLY AGREE !!!!!! NO ONE talks about brad !!!!!! Brads tone back then was UNFUCKINGREAL...JUST CRUSHING.. AS is his playing ... HOLY FUCK...JUST A MONSTER... THATS what made ME a boogie FANATIC !!!!!!
That was the first time I heard metal and still one of my favorite albums including the guitar
WTF Where have I been all these years?! Never heard this album. Listening to it now and damn it's pretty good. Not a big Ozzy fan so never cared to listen to all his albums.
We need a hole interview with James Hetfield and his mesa boogie signature NOW!!!!!
James has moved from his Boogie amps some time ago. Nowadays it's all AxeFx live and Diezel VH4 in the studio and it's also a reason why I don't like his sound anymore - when he was playing through the Mesa stuff his tone was unmatched from Puppets all through the years ending up with Load / ReLoad era. For Garage inc. he used Wizard amps, good amps with a big price tag.
@@coldbastard6859I don’t think it’s the Diezel sound that you don’t like. He doesn’t boost his amps anymore, that’s the issue. If he put a TS in front of one of those Diezels it would sound amazing. But I agree the IIC+ is the signature Hetfield tone we all know and love. Mesa needs needs to do a true IIC+ reissue of a Hetfield IIC+ signature model. Something one those lines. I’d buy it today if they did.
@@Hadouken5150 I never claimed he boosted his amps and the only time he did boost them was during the Kill'em All/ Ride The Lightning era. And yeah, I don't like the tone of VH4 cause it has way too much low end and way too bloated mids. AxeFx also sounds fake especially when they plug it into that Solid State power section.
The real problem with the Mesa amps (especially the mark series) is that they're built for studios and not the road. And repairing them is any techs nightmare, they should do just a reissue of C+ with point-to-point construction - that way they'd be the most sought after amps ever.
I came, I saw Hetfield, I gave a thumb up, and I'll watch the content later ( now at work) Cheers from Morocco.
Haha funny! On a side note, how you all doing over there in Morocco? We're all fucked up over here in America what with the Covid19 shit. Sad as hell man.
I'm 54 and Mark IIC+ is still my most favorite amp through all these years. Can't get my signature tone with any other company's amp no matter how hard I try. Mesa Mark amps for me until the day I die.
Oh wow theres John Petrucci under that beard.
seeing these 50th anniversary videos makes me proud to know I've been a part of it for over 20 years years! long live Boogie!
I've been a Mesa Boogie player since 2000. I echo your sentiments.
Congrats Mesa and the Mesa team! By far the best amp company on this planet. Wishing you another 50 years of success!
Best amps ever made
André Fernandes Absolutely
Damn right I've own them all and nun can compared to a Mesa boogie sound not Evan close .
I've owned several, a Mk1, MkIII, MkIV, and I'm currently running a Triaxis in my live rig and I would almost agree except for my unbridled lust for Bogner stuff. I want a Bogner Atma so bad it hurts.
Agreed. . .
Best amps EVAAAAAH!!!!
@Ewolf5150 Nice troll buddy
The Mesa Boogie Mark II C+ is the sound so many guitar players covet. JP2C is the next best thing. Love Mesa Boogie amps.
I love my Triple Rectifier. Thanks for making my favorite amps
Loving the continuing story! Been a Boogie player since '83, and through that association have had the good fortune to meet John Petrucci and Walter Trout. Mesa player for life here!
Mesa Boogie why ? why not making a real 2c+ reissue ? not the jp2C ! the real deal with the old fashion 2c+ same value components & with the good old schumarer 105 transformer ??? Please Mesa Boogie make that happen one of these days !
3 dislikes...must be Marshall fans .. LOL
Sadly after 20 years of playing i have never owned a mesa :(
Bro! Grab one! Life changer
Me neither but I’ve been really thinking about one of these filmore’s lately!
Get one, I have a triple rec and it’s killer.
The mini rec is kinda cheap
Time to pull the trigger!
Prince all through his career used Mesa/Boogies. Since he didn't endorse gear I would say for purpose 4 this clip that Prince was that cool uncle that rarely came by 😆
I took a chance and ordered a new mark2b. You had to pay for it before they built it. It finally arrived and I could not believe when I fired it up.
I own it today. Never bought another amp.
Papa Het showed us this sound. All Hail Papa Het.
Mesa Boogie is the reason i still pick up my guitar everyday @ 61. I'm not great but my Mesa Mark V always helps me feel great. All my other amps are jealous i spend so much time with the Mesa......i just know it. To be able to get more than just 'one great tone' is what's really inspiring.
I always used Mesa . And I’m about to buy a new one. They are expensive but it will make you so much better having such an amp. This is undoubtedly the most important thing for your sound. So I guess I will get a mini mark 5 😊
not expensive if you cosider bogner or whatnot. i would personally recommed the mark v 35. its definitely worth the extra dollars.
jakebenigni thank you for your suggestion. I will take it into my calculations. And then I will restore my old boogie. I think I will be able to afford it around summer.
Love love love the Boogie! Interesting that the two most iconic guitar amps of all time, (imo) Mesa and Marshall, were created by guys who didn't even play the guitar.
The most iconic amp was the Fender Bassman, copied by Marshall and Mesa. Leo didn't play either BTW...
@@rogeeeferrari it is true the 5F6-A Bassman's circuit design was directly copied by Jim Marshall in their JTM-45 amplifier during the early 1960s. Whether the F.B. is thee most iconic amp of all time is debatable imo.
Just here adding up one more comment needing a James Hetfield Signature Boogie.
Mr Randy and team, please.
Mesa Boogie Mark V 25 is the best amp I’ve ever owned!🤘😀🤘
The little Mark V 25 is a beast. It's one of the few items of musical equipment I will never part with and I have instructions in my will to pass it on to friends.
Love seeing Al Di Meola and Walter Trout, both are virtuoso on that there guitar.
not a mention of Soldano yet, let's see if they bring him up when they talk about the rectifier
RezaMatix ooooooooooooo
The Pharoah always takes credit for the Pyramid built by others.
Soldano Rulz!!!
Lol 😂😂😂😍
exactly my thoughts.
4:05 I had the same experience with the Mark IV in '91 (but not at the Mesa factory lol). My buddy called me from a mutual friends house and says "you gotta hear this amp Mike just got, it's killer, you're going to want one". "I'll come check it out, but I can't afford something like that right now" I said. I knew two things IMMEDIATELY upon hearing it and playing through it.....I was going to order one.....and I would probably end up divorced. A few months later I was the proud owner of a Mark IV, and somehow still married. I will ALWAYS be a Boogie guy at heart.
JAYMZ!! 🤘
Hetfield is the perfect name for an amp.
I'm a huge MB fan. Bought my first and only MB - a MkIIb - from the factory in 83-84. It was my only amp for over 30 years. But I can't be the only one bothered by the fawning, saccharine, self congratulating tone of these videos? I have no problem with brands promoting themselves. But I'd be embarrassed to send these to a friend.
Rockfish66 Yeah, it’s pretty cheesy. I’d love to own a Mesa someday, but any company that’s too full of themselves eventually stops caring about the product they put out. I hope Mesa hasn’t reached that point yet.
i like marshall amps but ill buy messa just for sake of metallicaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Haha
Whitesnake 87 written and played by "John Sykes" on a Mark IIC + head. Blue Murder album with John Sykes, same Mesa boogie amp. That Whitesnake 87 tone is iconic, still of night - that first finger slide off the e string to hold that G hord and that tone, so full, tight, aggressive and the pinch harmonics.
Anthrax album state of euphoria and Persistence of time, that heavy low end fat Mesa crunch. Way before Bogner, deizel, and all the other current boutique amps, the Boogies were delivering the tone.
John Sykes, Whitesnake and Blue Murder tones are epic!
Yeah, and John Sykes was a beast, playing one of the hardest guitars to play, a LP Custom. (I know, cause I have one, and don't play it any more, since I moved on to much easier guitars to play.)
i think he used a Mark III coliseum, but not sure...cheers!!!
@gerald rauch You are correct sir!!!
MESA/Boogie! Give us the JH Crunchberries!!!
Papa het is backk
Lamb of God best tone ever IMO
I love mesa boogie! Have never owned one of their amps as much as I would love to but i love everything about the company and that characteristic tone that they give to our favourite bands that I grew up listening to such as metallica, dream theater, limp bizkit, Korn, linkin park, god smack and lamb of god to name a few
Years ago, outdoor festival, Kill Switch Engage and Cannibal Corpse had killer guitar tones coming from their Mesa Boogie Amps! The note definition on Cannibal Corpse was surprising
CC has used either Keeley modded Metal Zone or Maxon overdrives to further boost their Recto heads. It's more Maxon these days, you could use a Ibanez turbo tubescreamer to get a similar tone (well, same circuit basically).
Yeah saw Kill Switch Engage w Anthrax and KSE's tone was outta this world. Not sure if Anthrax uses Boogies or not. Don't remember if I saw their amps. But Scott Ian's tone was dry.
Mesa/Boogie.... incredible products, impeccable service and always pushing the envelope! I hear a lot about Randall and Doug, but, there’s a whole team with people like Mike Bendinelli who make the “experience” of being part of the Boogie family so incredible! Your tone starts here...
Absolutely- and contrary to popular belief for most, the C+ was a DIRECT result of Mike’s efforts with Doug in trying to correct issues with the effects loop on the IIC.
Thus, the C+ was born- thank goodness!🤘🏻
Miss my first Mark III...serial number 15924...miss you still...where are you?
I hear MESA/Boogie, I hear Lamb of God.
Master of puppets tone is my favorite tone ever.
Mark Tremonti is why I now play the Triple Rectifier! The triple is the king of all metal amps!!
I wish they had chosen a better song for the video. Otherwise, great content
My first exposure to Mesa Boogie was Tom Delonge of Blink-182. He used it extensively between 1997-2005
looks like Kirk has a moustache 1:51, must be 2015 or 2016.
I love my mesa but i love more my marshall and engl 🍻🍻🍻🍻🍻
I’ll never part with my Dual Rectifier rackmount...it’s the ONE! 🤘🏼
The black diamondplate rackmount was always the coolest
U love your SLO preamp don't u? I knew it.
Why else would u like a Rectifier?
which Metallica album first used Boogies ?
Master of Puppets
Proud owner of a Recto Verb 25...also that background music is wretched.
Why doesn’t James have a signature head?
I’ve been asking that question for years my friend.
I bought a Mark III in 1988 not knowing any other artists were using it. The main reason why I chose Mesa is, my guitar teacher said "Marshall is good, but if u want to really shine, get a Mesa Boogie" 😊
Love Mesa/Boogie
Think about the sales numbers a Mark IIC+ reissue would bring in. The JP-2C is a great amp, but it isn’t a true Mark IIC+. Bring back the Mark IIC+!!!
Love Boogies. Super Super loud, amazing. Kind of dry sounding IMHO. michael t - L.A. jam night player 2013-2019.
I’ve got the Mark V and you’ll have to bury me with it!
It would be excelent if they would release mark IIC+ again :) Exactly the same as in 80s
The Petrucci signature head is basically a Mark IIC+.
My IIC+ and JP rock!
OK kids 1990 I was playing bass for Ron Hacker on a big Blues festival in Denmark. I had just Just bought a Mesa bass 400 bass amp loved it. On the festival in Denmark I think it was Djurs festival we opened for Walter Trout. He was fantastic...He was playing thru what I remember was a small Mesa amp, like 1 12" speaker combo just crushing it. Just a memory from back in the day...all good..also we did a few other gigs in Denmark on that tour opening for Walter in small clubs around the country..great memories..
First heard of Boogie amps reading about Dream Theater, right about the time I started playing guitar. Then in correspondence with Tool’s management, found that Adam Jones used a Rectifier as part of his sound. Mesa has been a part of my tonal consciousness ever since. I am an unapologetic Mesa fanboy. I have a pipe dream of starting a Mesa Mark series and hi-gain Recto collection once my kids are out of school. And yes, even including a Stilletto (such a different but awesome take on the Rectifier lineage - don’t know why there’s so much bad energy from the community about that line). Top it off with a Triple Crown 😁
Good stuff, well-designed and assembled. It truly is the “Spirit of Art in Technology”. So good.
Oh, and I’d love to see a revisit of a TriAxis style preamp, but with two parallel sections - 1 with the signature Mark series tones, and one with all the Recto/TC tones - pumping into a dual mono block power amp, with each side optimized for the respective tonal farms. But maybe with a slightly less 80s interface. Yeah I know that would probably cost $6-7k to tuck all that in together, and the switching logic might initiate SkyNet and achieve sentience, but hey, I can dream, right?
I have a Mark V 35 on order and am very excited to finally be a part of the Boogie family after 24 years of playing.
So how are you liking it?
I still remember the day I got my Mark V 25. Walked into Jams Music for a set of strings. Laughed at the mini head sitting on the counter that was being dusted off before being put on a 2x12. The store owner told me how good it was and I didn't believe him. It took all of 5 seconds to realize I was walking out of the store with a bigger credit card bill than a set of strings.
When will you be making new JP2C Mesa amps again for sale? Been wanting one to use with my Majesty 7 string for Dream Theater licks.
Petrucci gets a signature amp but James Hetfield doesn't? I don't think it's much of an overstatement here to say that Metallica singlehandedly put Mesa Boogie on the map as a heavy metal amp. Before Master of Puppets, Boogie was known as the Swiss army knife amp for session players. After Master of Puppets, every metal guitar player worth his salt wanted one.
I know everyone begs for a 2C+ reissue but I got one better:
A 2C+ Coliseum reissue.
The added headroom of the 180 watt output section retains the tightness of the preamp better than the Simulclass which is why Hetfield went with the Coliseum.
There was a small independent guitar store (remember those?) in Salt Lake that had a Rectifier full stack back in '92 or so, I went in and the guy plugged it in, cranked it, and almost melted the windows of the shop. I should have taken his putting in earplugs as a warning.
That’s awesome, I think I know that shop, I lived in Oem at that time and took my Marshall to be serviced there
I remember when my friend saved up enough to buy a Tripple Rectifier head and cabinet. Soooo damn loud and ridiculous gain.
Maybe if I didn’t have to re finance my house to get one, id get one.
So great, all this great heritage and care in developing great amps and culture will be destroyed by the Gibson Greed Gang...hold on to your Boogies!!
I love the Mark V in every way. It meet every single need I could ever want in an amp with the simplistic design to the user for tweaking. The most versatile amp with an amazing clean all the way to the tight, chunky, saturated, and articulate ringing notes that remain clear. The guys truly are a master at their craft. I appreciate what they have done.
ZCome on guys, time for a JH Sig amp. It's been way too long. I will put money down right now. Go on you know it has to happen.
Holy shit is that the crunchy berries amp behind James, I don’t know it still was a thing
John Petrucci and James Hetfield are the reason I want a Mark series amp
crunch berries justice mark 4 Very sought after tone
When you get a mesa boogie amp... you can't go back
Got to love Hetfield's hat!
John Sykes has the best Mesa sound for me.
I just ordered a used dual rectifier from reverb
Mesa is the greatest amps in the history of rock! Period!
Agreed! And they've kept it all tube, not strayed into the digital modeling/solid state arena, not yet anyhow.
I'm a simple man... I see The Het and Mesa Boogie and I click... By the way he deserves a signature Mark IIC+
Let’s face it…Mesa means Metallica.
Love my Mark V... never use anything else. Well, except for my Marshall Jubilee....
O loved MESA/BOOGIE congratulations on your 50th and your amazing amplifiers , YOU ARE THE BEST 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thanks Mesa Boogie, Good Video, informative & enjoyable to watch. Happy 50th Anniversary Mesa is an Iconic brand .
I own Mesa products. I'm lucky to have lived twenty minutes away.
I've had many friends that have worked for them over the years and some still do.
I have had for twenty + years a Triaxis into a Strategy 400 Stereo.
I have a Mark III top cab with 200 watt Black Shadows in it and a Marshall A with Celestion PE185S speakers in it.
It handles all the wattage and sounds incredible. It's built like a tank and it's stupid loud !
Mesa, Go Big or Go Home !!!
j'ai essayé, à deux reprise, le Rect'Dual Boogie......c'est la meilleur tête à lampe que je connaisse ;
I got my first Boogie(A Hardwood IIc EVM Combo)in 1989. Itook it with me when I moved to London and then swapped it for a 3c which I then swapped for a Triple Rectifier in 1993 which had until 2000 when I gave up touring and used my 96 Blueface Diezel VH4 for the studio my primary workplace. Then I lucked out and bought a King Snake which I use to this day in the studio and live.A grrrreat amp.BTW, I hook it up via a cabclone into a Universal Audio 6176 into the Apollo Quad system....now my sound quest concerning tube amps is over....
Love you, too Randall Smith!! Thanks for all of the great amplifiers you and staff have designed!!!! Am now rocking a Badlander 50, along with my Transatlantic TA-30. Both killer sounding amps!!!
Rip handle bar stache
DUDE...CRUNCH BERRIES.
Me boo Capt crunch☝🏼I'm guilty, I bought my first Boogie in the early 90's
and haven't stopped.
The 1st Boogie I noticed was Pete Townshend "Who are you" video. In the background is a wood and wicker mark. Thought that amp looked so bad ass. Many yrs later bought my own, a S O B wood and wicker that barely leaves it's road case anymore. And it still looks bad ass!
I sold my 100 watt 2x12 Lonestar. I kick myself daily! Amazing amp, great full clean tone with dirty sound for blues, rock even metal. Love the wattage switching too.
I loved....my first boogie half stack , But then went through guitar phases. And sold the head.... but kept my rectifier oversized cabinet to try other amps . But absolutely wished I hadn't sold it . But I am going to end up buying another boogie to blend with my current sound . Just nothing like the boogie tube sound and weight it brings . Not to mention a great amp for leads . Just the right amount of cut through without a thin sounding note.
