    I found this to be very helpful I realize now why we start drawing shadow shapes.

    I might turn the reference photo of the bust upside down to draw it.
    That way I am forced to see the face as purely an arrangement of forms unrelated to anything recognizable.
    People draw things that are not there if they think they should be there.
    For example, we know that a nose has nostrils,so we draw them even if they are absent lost in shadow.
