I did two years of art school, paid thousands of Euros from 2002 to 2004, but my teachers tought NOTHING of what you teach. I remember my cartoon animation teacher, saying "start with rough sketches. Don't do the final sketch from the start". That was the ONLY advice he gave us and he kept repeating that, thinking that we, the absolute amateurs would become pros with that single advice. Now, in 2023, you teach EVERY F*NG THING they should have tought us back then, for free and in a few minutes. Not in two years time. How to draw perfect lines, how to define shapes, giving examples by you actually drawing something (they never did that), etc. Exactly what they SHOULD have tought us back then. A thank you is barely enough, man.

I feel the same way way. I feel we was thrown into a lot of things. I used to draw all the time growing up. I just want to improve so I could work for a art studio or have my own animation
I always tell my students to look at the whites of the eyes and the shape to get their eyes more accurate when they draw. Negative shapes are really useful to focus on!
As an ex art and graphic design teacher, as a well as a sometime professional illustrator, i have always wanted to learn how to draw freely and accurately and vibrantly out of my imagination. To do this, proportions are definitely something I need to get much better and more confident at. Your comment about how you simply got good using a pencil to measure and just looking is inspiring and I feel makes something that can be intimidating for students of drawing appear less so. Ive casually been drawing since probably the first time i found a pencil. Ive always eyeballed everything and the result was always acceptable enough. observation is by far the most important part of art, without eyes you'd have to draw by your mind and thats what a lot of beginners actually do, don't do that use reference and observe everything , the more time you spend observing the better your reference art will look

Going gradualy deeper and deeper into understanding stuff... i kinda actualy end up not using more than half of the stuff i buy, and experiment with for drawing... but in the end of the day it somehow it makes sense and gives exp. "As photoshop user myself" there's a slightly quicker/simpler way to do what you mentioned in the "self critique" portion of your video. the 1st part is the same •Save your drawing layer over your photo layer and Change the layer mode to "Multiply" (or "Linear Burn"). • then in the menu Goto "IMAGE" > "Adjustments" > "Hue/Saturation" . • a window pops-up. Click on "Colorize" • and then adjust the "HUE", "SATURATION" & "LIGHTNESS" bar options to taste. click ok. Done
I am an art student at the academy and I've done 1 year of life drawing with both two male models and two female models. My teacher actually never taught us how to do the Loomis method, the anatomy etc but just DRAWING because the goal was mainly to be quicker. As a person who has been drawing for her whole life I did both still life and life drawing classes and in artistic high school they taught us how to take proportions. But NEVER anatomy. So...I practiced a lot of drawing in highschool and I improved a lot. As a person who has been also selft taught I've already used all of the methods that you listed, which are AMAZING. But when I went to the academy yes, they taught beginners how to do that, but to a person like me, who really wanted to add that more spice to the drawing, I would get critique but most of the time my drawing was right, the teacher told me that my only problem was positioning the subject in the center of the paper. But the proportions and everything were 90% of the time Right. Idk, I still want to improve my quickness in taking proportions and likeness, when I am at the anatomy class, my drawing is not how I want it, even though my teacher always tells me that it's good. Idk, I don't feel like I have a high level of accuracy and quickness in my drawing skills... I get accuracy just with A LOT OF TIME on the drawing (it also depends on the days..) I don't even know what kind of level I have, where should I look at to improve my skills even more. I even had some students coming up to me asking to correct their own drawing and i would always tell them that im not good enough to do that. But they would really trust my critique???? Idk i want to improve, but i dont know how???
time yourself with a timer to draw for short intervals so you dont over work an area and then gauge what your weakest areas are after each short burst, then maybe practice those specifically to improve ur time. if that makes sense
For yeara i did the measurement method just for instinct. Comparing proportions of somepart of the face to other parts of the body. Or trying to copy the angle without a ruler just with my pencil. Thats how i draw my first "realism" portrait. Combining the unit method. Now i discover the pumbleline method thanks you
Another big thing I'd like to mention is just don't stress if what you did isn't perfect. Move on, and come back later. Tunnel vision can seriously stunt your growth
10:40 - just double click the layer with your drawing, and apply a color overlay layer style. it'll change the lines to whatever color you want, it takes two seconds, and it's non-destructive.
I would also give simply lowering the opacity of the above layer a try. It's available in basically any photo editing or drawing software, and it's maybe the most beginner/tech-illiterate friendly lol.

Sometimes I will put my drawing side by side my reference picture using an app called “pic collage” and then I will reverse it in my photos on my phone and I will see all kinds of stuff I could move around to improve my drawing and it’s proportions. You can even flip them upside or whatever. It’s amazing!

Over the years I find myself becoming too dependent on screens display for my measuring process (page edges, vertical angles and negative spaces are cheated there). Drawing from life is truly where the best improvements can be made since you will have to figure out everything from the composition and don't get stuck on specific tools. Checking proportions on the scanned images is very easy to correct mistakes and to growth your observation skills but it is also important to build confidence to not depend on it and aim master the observation skills. This can free you from any constrain of size format, improve line efficiency and confidence.

I'm very grateful for this video. Although......this is the first of the lessons I've done in the course that made me feel stupid. I'm not sure why, but after I laid out the vertical line from the top of the hat to the chin and divided it into units, I felt so lost. I struggled figuring out the width of the hat and so much more. I finished after a few hours and saw that mine was the worst compared to the folk in the critique video. Clearly got a long way to go, and im grateful for all your courses.

10:48 You can also just alpha lock the layer and make a red (or any color) rectangle over the top of it, it's a lot faster and easier that way. In photoshop the alpha lock tool looks like a little checkerboard, it prevents changes outside any existing marks so you can just color right over the top of your lines.
If you draw on normal office paper, you can simply put the brightness of your screen to the maximum, get the room dark if needed, put the paper on your screen and it basically does the same as the whole photoshop thing.
Here's a tip to do that colored line art thing quicker. Different programs call this something different, but find "Layer>Convert Luminance to Opacity" for my SAI users, or "Edit>Convert Brightness to Opacity" for Clip Studio, etc. What this is going to do is basically turn the white of your page to transparency on that layer. It's like setting line art to multiply, THE SEQUEL. For best results, bump up the contrast of your picture or scan first. This insures that your lines are extra dark, and none of the texture or shadows from the paper are picking up on the layer. Afterwards, move over to your layers tab and set that layer to lock transparent pixels. Now, the only parts of that layer that can be changed is the line art itself, so you can take a big ol round brush and paint over the lines in any color you want. Or even a gradient if you're feeling ~sassy~, I'm not your dad.

I mean, I am fine with it, but I always have problems with proportions and perspective - even though I draw digitally (so I look straight at the drawing) and I flip drawing time to time. Just a tip for the overlay thing: I don't follow all of your steps but just place a layer with the picture underneath and reduce its opacity :) then I sometimes click the layer with my sketch on and off a few times to see the discrepancies. I'll then turn off the layer with the reference and try to correct the mistakes by eye. Is that even a good method? I feel like proportions are so hard to grasp! Progress on proportions is so slow :( Which sucks, because shading and filling everything in is something I'm great at. It's just the basics that are lagging behind 😂

I like the proportional divider. Helps with accurate measurements and scaling for starting a layout of a drawing. But any drawing tool will work too.

Thank you for the vid! This is one of my biggest problems - especially since I draw with one seeing eye, yeah... I mean, I am fine with it, but I always have problems with proportions and perspective - even though I draw digitally (so I look straight at the drawing) and I flip drawing time to time. Yet still sometimes the drawing is fine, sometimes it is crooked as I dunno what

Just a tip for the overlay thing: I don't follow all of your steps but just place a layer with the picture underneath and reduce its opacity :) then I sometimes click the layer with my sketch on and off a few times to see the discrepancies. I'll then turn off the layer with the reference and try to correct the mistakes by eye.
Is that even a good method? I feel like proportions are so hard to grasp! Progress on proportions is so slow :( Which sucks, because shading and filling everything in is something I'm great at. It's just the basics that are lagging behind 😂
