I was having problems following it because my mind was preoccupied, definitely watching a second time, don't think I seen you do this type of line and then work out which side landed where and, something like Loomis for heads, I mean I seen you do lines in a million ways, but is there a end to yours? Really, what does Marshall have to say about that? 😆 much love and thanks for everything all of you do.
I absolutely love the way you demonstrate it with yourself, it’s so so much better than just being told - really helps to properly understand the forms. Thank you for making great lessons!!
@@ProkoTV I come from a dance background and the medical field. you'd think that knowing the human body proportions help but in my case it doesn't. those things don't teach you design, they teach you realism. I think learning art is kind of against the grain in that way. How do you shut down all the noise and focus on learning the new skill that's right in front of you? Haha!!
I've been figure drawing for roughly 5 years but its always good to go back to the basics to avoid getting caught up in anatomical details, resulting in a stiff drawing. When you talked about choosing the "longer" side of the neck I was like "this guy is a great teacher. that establishes asymmetry for dynamism and also blocks in the sternocleidomastoid muscle." Keep up the great work, Proko.
I’ve been so frustrated with my figure/gesture drawings lately. This is inspiring me to pull out my newsprint pad and get back to the basics! Your channel is a lifesaver for those of us who can’t afford art school.
You have taught me so much in the few months I’ve been watching your videos you also introduced me to Jeff Watts. I’ve become twice as good at sketching in the last five or six months than in the 30 years I spent drawing with no understanding of what I was doing. Watching you guys videos is 100% the cause. I wish I had the money for your online classes but it’s not in the cards for me at this point in time. But I just want to say you have changed my life with your videos and I appreciate it so much. Thank you 🙏🏾
As a 3D animation student- this video was extremely helpful. As you know, part of the animation process is planning with simplified gesture drawings- I definitely will use this as a guide. Thank you so much.
I may do anime style but your videos helped me alot especially anatomy. The bean method made me improve exponentially. Someone told me I have a "semi realistic " style and I took that as a compliment.
I wish all the mechanical points of art were drilled in my head like all the body parts have been drilled in. Like not once have I ever had to draw a heart in a cone shape, and not once have I ever had to demonstrate HOW the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, but here I am. lol!!! Learning new skills and new ways to find passion in my life. I can't thank you so much!!
There are many many good and amazing artists out there, but you, you are such an incredible and amazing explainer. Thank you so much for all your Work.
I love the way the drawing of each body part is broken down. I think it's a pity that the Figure drawing course doesn't have the same explanations for the gesture drawing part
Occasionally I see the random discouraging word from viewers and wonder if they, like me are in the Trades and just having a bad day. I am a 30-year veteran Production Artist- studios Include SEGA, SONY, Disney, Nickelodeon, Apple, Discovery Kids etc. and I can say with confidence that every single one of us needs a 'refresher' like these videos. Not always been a fan of Proko, but the content I have seen is solid and not lazy. I would advise anyone trying to 'break in' to pay attention here- you don't always need to start from scratch and these lessons provide you with time-saving lessons discovered long ago and reinforced by pros in practice. Engineers, while having an education steeped in fundamental physical sciences, don't try to re-write the paws of physics. Instead they take the current science, methods and tech and use it for invention and production. Keep going!
Thank you so much, as an art of mainly landscape paintings, I don’t normally draw people in my landscapes. I normally do plants and buildings. So when it comes to drawing people I struggle. I have been only practicing for 2 days and I am improving (from my very first one no knowledge).
Thank you so much for this!!! I think it's the most useful video I've ever watched for understanding how to capture movement and not get caught up in details. I do have a hard time with gesture and figure drawing, and as an aspiring animator this made me think in a very different way. The point about searching for connections is just fantastic!
Wow, this opened my mind in many ways, that tip where you take in consideration how the lines from each muscle can intersect made me view things different and in a more artistic way ❤ tysm!
Outstanding lessons, Proko. I learn more than years of university classes. As well, I never thought of these big lessons as being right for kids, but my 10 year old granddaughter is becoming proficiently skillful with your help. See if you can get your videos onto RUclips KIDS.
Thank you for this video, it's very clarifying! In these weird times beginners need every help and incentive possible to keep going, and i'm glad to have your content as a resource i keep going back to :)
Niiiice. When I was taking figure classes for animation way back in the dark ages my instructors called it "drawing through" Later when I took classical fine art figure drawing courses I found I never lost that gestural quality ( over a long pose the model's posture will change so it's good to get that gesture quickly) Love your videos 👍
HUGE thank you for making this video. I love expressing dance, but using meaningful lines and capturing the moment is hard. I think I know the physics and missing the design simpicity. Too much knowledge is a thing. Haha!! Big thanks!!!
Tried it out with a few poses for some characters I'm designing and I'm coming up with better poses than I did just trying to copy shape-for-shape in my references before. Gonna spend the rest of next year practicing this, it will be useful for animation as well I suppose since I am very interested in trying that too.
im 40 and have just started drawing to enjoy with my son, but obviously im 40 so i got a nice drawing tablet etc and loads of good pencils and equipment! these videos will stop me wasting all that money!.... i hope :P
I gotta point out: that must be incredible to have an invitation to teach at a place you wear once denied to work at like happend to Stan. That must be an incredible satisfaction :3
Thanks! This is the right lesson at the right time for me. I can immediately see how this is going to help me solve problems in the figure sketches that I'm doing at the moment. And such a sharp focused presentation of a concept; in parallel to the budding artist, the teacher in me is taking away a different set of notes.
This is a summary of what i took from this video in case anyone needs it^^ Rhythm How different body parts will connect - to find portions - eg. Hip actually curves into the neck in this pose Find the end point before creating the curve line (idk what that line is called line of action?) Make sure your curves are accurate - dont just draw them actually look at the subject
When I was little I rolled a ball to my dad. 32 years later with daily practice, research, failures, and adaptations, I can place a spiked curve on the corner of a plate under pressure. Have a good day.
this was incredibly helpful actually for me, someone who's just starting to draw! Very well explained even for a beginner. Maybe those stickmen won't be so stiff anymore! 😅
The way this just clicked.... why is art like that, we struggle and struggle and struggle and then you wake up one morning and it's not a struggle anymore.... like what changed from yesterday?
Sometimes, we're just ready for it! The things you studied before and didn't yet understand wait in the background for that one missing little piece and BAM! Understanding strikes.
Hey stan i am angry and happy at the same time on you. you dont teach this technic in your figure drawing course and now you are showing and thats where i was struggling and had a hard time doing that. Thanks
Yes there are a lot of additional details and exercises I would add to the course if I did it over again. More content for future lessons I guess! But.. when I draw gestures, I primarily use rhythms. So all the gesture examples in that course are also rhythm examples!
Don't know why there's not tutorials where they just draw plain front, side, and back view first I did that two or three times I understand anatomy and forms way more and I'm way better at just using my imagination for poses also I good way to get better is not to use reference all the time and just observe something draw it and the next time you see that thing you can think about where you went wrong or a detail you missed
