- Join me as I go mudlarking along the River Thames in London and search for pieces of history left out by the tide. This video is made up of a few different outings and I give my round up by the river on a very chilly New Year's Day!
One of my finds happens to be part of a Frozen Charlotte and so I tell the story of poor Charlotte who froze to death after ignoring her mother's advice. You can find the entire poem in a link on this page here:-

My son Angelo sings a song on this video and you can find his youtube channel @CollateralUK
You can follow him on instagram @collateralrocks and facebook - Collateral
If you are thinking of trying mudlarking then you need a permit from the Port of London Authority. You can find the details here:-

You say"can you se it?" I say "yeah, yeah, I see it" Then you pick up something next to it!
ha ha that's funny :) maybe you saw things I missed!
Haha, yes that happens with me too - I see what I think is The Thing but it turns out to be Another Thing!
I think we are all tuned to different frequencies. I am always looking at the rusty iron lumps when she says that.
@@anthonyturton8091 You could be right. I think there is a tendency to see - or think you see - things that interest you more.
Haha!! I was going to tell her that also! She sure has the eye for her finds!! 😍
(sigh😊)Oh Angelo, that was simply magnificent 🙌🏻. Such a calming and restful rendition, and absolutely perfect with your Mum's ending scenery shots. Well done, Sir!!!
Thank you, Nicola for braving that foggy, and I'm quite sure, bracing morning on Old Father Thames 😊.
I loved your breakfast moment with your swan friend. She looked like she was giving you a few curtsy with her head bobbing. As if to say, "Please Mistress, do you have a bite of bread for a poor starving waif" 😊🤭. Their such beautiful creatures 💞.
Please don't fret over producing content for videos, Nicola 👍🏻. We in your RUclips family love just seeing that your doing well health and safety-wise. Whatever with, and whenever you can, just pop on and gives a moment of your beautiful smile and whimsical wit👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻.
Frozen Charlotte historical information... FABULOUS 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. Although in my 20's and 30's I will admit I had a bit of a vain streak, also🙄. "Mustn't muss up my outfit"🤦🏼♀️. My mom use to have a saying,"to soon me get old...to late we get smart".
Blessings to you, Nicola, for a splendid New Year...and MUCH prosperity to you and your precious family. 😊🤗🤭😘🙋🏼♀️.
This video was exactly what I wanted today. I'm feeling a bit Dickensian myself. Angelo topped it all off with his lovely rendition of Hallelujah.
Angelo! Wonderful voice. Thank you Nicola for sharing your adventures, talents and you son with us.
Wow beautiful rendition of Hallelujah by Angelo! I do hope you find your complete bellamine jug in 2021. Keep hunting, you never know when you will get the find of a lifetime! Happy New Year, stay safe and well, hugs and best wishes from Oregon!xx
In reading stories about the former days of the Thames, it is amazing to me how the water has returned to health and such beauty. Loved the story of Frozen Charlotte and watching you pick up all your treasures. Your son is very talented! Blessings for the new year Nicola!
Thank you x
I could watch one of these everyday, here in landlocked Massachusetts... interesting, soothing, environmentally friendly... in a world gone mad.
That's absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing. Bless you and yours!!!
Always love the wildlife footage you include. thank you.. If you get stuck some tips on research, equipment and restoration techniques would be welcome from you and Si , best gloves , trowel of the year etc.
is that Schrödinger's pipe ? both complete and broken at the same time ?
Happy new year to all
Lol Schrodinger's Pipe is perfect
I seem to remember that Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble were Members of the Order of the Buffaloes👍😎 Happy New Year thanks for all the great videos this past year👍
Best wishes to you on the new year and wish you all the best from Minneapolis Minnesota USA hope to someday see the for shore in person.
I'd love to see a timelapse of the blackened clay pipes fading.
Me too but I don't know how to do it!
Would love to watch you make your glass fishes, placing each piece to create the whole.
If you're running low video mudlarking on the river, why don't you make some videos about your creative process? I'd love to see more of the art you do with your finds. Or basically any art you make. I love watching people make things and I'm always interested in hearing what they think about as they do it.
Seems to me you can go out on the Thames and find a plethora of relics any day of the year. Just have to have the eye. Am I spot on or is it more difficult than that?
i would love to find a clay pipe bowl and stem complete. I have found stems but no pipe bowls.
Has anyone ever told you that you would make a great Children’s Show host? Maybe even a show with your finds would be awesome!!
Thank you. That would be a lot of fun x
I agree! It could be a spin-off of 'Where's Waldo?" called "Spot the Find!" LOL!
I think Nicola has found a niche that no one can copy because she has intelligence that most "mudlarking" copycats cannot duplicate.
@@nicolawhitemudlark Such a good idea!
Omg, I thought that 🤣
Every time you say “do you see it”? My response is no, no I do not. 😂
The Moonlight here has been bathing the night brightly here in Southern California the past few Nights....so much so that I have metal detected an abandoned property with a home built in the 1920's on it. I have unearthed 148 coins, 2 marbles and a 14k Gold pin with the letters CB upon it. Happy New Year with wishes to all in the U.K. looking for luck in the muck!!!
Nic, you've made this weird year so much more tolerable and joyous! Thank you, and happy 2021. 🎉💗🕯️
wow that is a nifty ladder! Never seen the like. As always a lovely stroll and a good eye training exercise.
Thanks Martha x
If you get one of those ladders, they're not expensive, watch out for you fingers. Been there and said ouch too often. A couple of blood blisters too!
Sold by Aldi quite often We have one!
Thank you for your comments everyone and for complimenting my son Angelo on his cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah at the end. If you would like to hear him singing it with way better acoustics than my sitting room (!) then here is the professional video with his band: ruclips.net/video/w4CmTcfyh_o/видео.html
Now i want pink m😂🎨🦵🦵💗🥿🥿🥾🥾🥿🥿👢👢👢udboots
I got goosebumps ♥
Stunning view as usual! Thankyou so much for the wonderful adventures& treasure hunting!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🌷🎄🎄🎆🎇🎁🎉🎤🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎤👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
LOVE both versions of Angelo and Collateral singing Hallelujah. I'm patiently waiting until all the covids have left so the band can tour the US!
Happy New Year, Nic! You've graduated to a whole new level of mudlarking...knowing what is on a pipe BEFORE you extract it!! Well done, miss! You are the queen of Thames clay pipes 👊🏾
ha ha thank you :) I shall make a crown from the pipes maybe :) x
@@nicolawhitemudlark I think that with your pipe collection you could easily make a throne. A Happy and Safe New Year to you and yours.
Hello, I absolutely adore Angelo’s rendition of “Hallelujah”. Thank you for bringing us joy over the years and a happy New Year Nicola - with lots of hugs!
Thank you Dana! xx
Don’t you just love foggy morning walks along the water? One of my favorite memories is from a family vacation to Maine, when we went to a state park beach on a day with extremely thick fog. Walking on the rocky shore, only able to see about ten feet in front of me, hearing the fog horn from the lighthouse, seeing the blurry dark lumps that were seals on a sandbar just offshore and hearing them bark-it was one of the most evocative moments of my life.
I never feel more Canadian than when someone sings a Leonard Cohen song. His music is truly global in its message. Angelo's rendition is more heartfelt considering what 2020 brought. Your channel just gives such a positive feeling amid the daily grind! Hope you and your family enjoy 2021. Hans
Another important lesson to be learned from the Frozen Charlotte tale is never go out with a man that won't lend you his jacket in the cold. A man that considers his comfort over yours isn't worth his salt no matter how wealthy he may be.
I like these melancholic stories and the dancing birds on the Thames - nice combination with the piece of music.
Thank you!
Happy New Year!
Funny little crow as hungry as he probably was, still took the time to make sure he didn't step in any mud 😁
'Savouring the not knowing-ness' is my new favourite saying. I'm back to school tomorrow and it will be my response everytime I'm asked how I am... 😊 Happy new year Nic!
Ha ha Thanks Beth. I hope it goes well back at school tomorrow and all the not knowingness xx
I sat an exam in that state! LOL
The pottery shard with Victoria on it shows part of an early train.
Early railway carriages were named in the same way as the road carriages they resembled.
Never thought I’d hear the words “let’s cop a feel” from Nicola Whites lips. Lol
ha ha sorry!
i thought it was cute!
You know I missed that completely> I'm a guy I usually don't miss things like that !
Best wishes Nicola for 2021. Best of luck with your finds for this year!
Thank you Adam! And you too xx
Thank you Nicola for your clips. It's so interesting to go through history with you in the Thames. Maybe through your lockdown you have items that you could research and present the history as you have with items in the past or put photos of items up and get your subscribers to research them as I'm sure people would like a challenge to keep them thinking. May 2021 be a healing year. Here in New Zealand we had 5 weeks of lockdown when covid first arrived and now our borders are closed to a trickle of people who have to go into 2 weeks isolation in specifically identified hotels before they are free to go on to the streets or to other cities and towns. At present we have no covid in the community because of our strict regime, we don't allow in tourists etc but we are free to do whatever we want within the country and we feel safe. I hope you all can be as safe as us in the not too distant future. Take care =-)
Thank you very much, and that suggestion is very good x
I own one of your beautiful china/ship cards. It's framed and looks lovely in my guest room. I can's wait to collect one of your fish to match! I love to follow your work... carry on! Love from Indy.
Thank you Indy! so happy that you like it xx
Yet another incredible video! I love the little Charlotte dolls. I find ceramic little dolls similar to those when dump digging and metal detecting from time to time. Chilling and fascinating history behind them! Thanks for sharing that! Your son is super talented just like you! Happy New Year and happy larking! ~ Gypsy
Healthy happy new year Nicola xx your sons rendition does Leonard Cohen proud ,
Thank you!! x
All the best for 2021!
Thank you! x
Hi Nicola from Kentucky so excited for the new year and your “finds”😊
Thank you Lisa x
Amazing ladder! I wish that I were as adjustable as that!!!! Cheers!!!
*Yes* I can absolutely relate😆Aengus!
Have you and your son every posted a duet? I would love to see that! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to you and yours!
We have! But time for another
"using my mom's guitar" hmmmn, that implies that Nicola can play a guitar, and we know she can sing, maybe we can see a singling and playing Nicola at some point! Great voice and playing Angelo.
... what a great idea!! Go for it Nic!!
Yikes! Nicola is actually wearing gloves! Must be the end of the world!
I am amazed by how well you get the birds to cooperate, dancing to the music. Beautiful.
It took me quite a while to train them! They really are divas 😄
Love Angelo’s voice! So beautiful. You were also great on stage with Jon Bon Jovi’s band. A talented family. Thanks for making 2020 so much more bearable with your lovely videos. I find them so relaxing and mindful to watch as well as finding them fascinating 😀
Thank you Laura! X
- nothing says New Year like a frozen corpse. Great rendition too, Angelo. 'Til Then, Best, S
ha ha - thanks Steven! xx
A Very Fine rendition Angelo, on your Mom's Ovation! What a Lovely New Years Tideline Vid! Everything from Swans to Angelo! Treasures in between filled with history. Your videos and Family are Greatly Appreciated! I wish all of you Love, Abundance, Joy of Spirit and All your Wishes! And Angelo, as a musician/guitar player and hearing many many versions of this song, you are definitely one of my favorites, top five I'd say! It is a great song and over done a bit perhaps. So when it's done it must be done well and to you I say Bravo! All of you make the world better with your art and caring! So from Pennsylvania, this is DaveyJO and Many Blessings for 2021! 2020 gave us vision and now in this new year we can see the Light within and in all things.
Thank you! xx
I wandered off to read about those dollies, found out about them being baked in birthday cakes. From Germany to Great Britain. 1850-1920 They're also babies baked into a three kings cake for Mardi Gras/Epiphany festival. 2,000 years
It's always an adventure to see what you claim from the riverbank.
Thank you both for the sweet tune.
Peace
13:25 is that a pipe stem with bowel above your glove and Masonic bowel you just picked up just Curious Nicola !!!; )
Beautiful rendition of Hallelujah! Well done, Angelo! Leonard Cohen is more than a bit of a proud Canadian icon here in Canada.
You WILL find the gold coin this year.
Thank you Darrell! Can you put that in writing please!! :) xx
@@nicolawhitemudlark I sent the memo out.
🎶The boar's head in hand have I
Bedecked with bay and rosemary 🎶
Now I'm wondering if the RAOB gentlemen cultivated big handlebar moustaches like the buffalo horns. Love the mix of upbeat and contemplative in your work, Nic.
Thank you Kristine!
Each time you upload a vid makes me happy. I don't know exactly how to formulate it but it feeds so well my appetite for travelling a foreign country made of dreams and populated by many tiny pieces of imagination. You're so british at heart ! That's a real pleasure to follow your journey along this iconic river and I thank you for being so sensitive and passionate about such insignifiant leftovers ; thank you for seing things not so many people these days are still able to see and feel. I wish you a great year of findings ! (Hope my diatribe makes sense... you know... I'm French... ;o))
Thank you David! J'aime beaucoup ce que vous avez ecrit. x
The frozen Charlotte story reminds of going to prom in a little tulle gown. It was May and snowing in Maine. My mother kept trying to push a winter coat on me. Of course, I refused as I wished for people only to see me as a vision in purple tulle. By the time we walked into the venue my fingers matched my dress..
Are you sure your name isn't Charlotte!? Im glad you didn't freeze! :) x
Angelo- Thank You for singing for us, I Love that song and you have a beautiful voice!
I listen to too much true crime podcasts. I expected a real frozen corpse... 🥴
Sorry Eily!! I hope you're relieved
oh, my. Your's son's voice is absolutely beautiful. I just love that you share his music and his beauty with us. Thank you Nicola.
I’m always amazed you find shards with a whole name or a little scene broken in the right places x
It’s as if they were meant, knowing that Nicola will appreciate their full significance.
And oh my, Angelo's voice gave me goosebumps! Lovely!
I kept thinking I was seeing things like a spoon, an orb and perhaps some false teeth? I really enjoyed hearing your son.
Thanks Tina! x
I thought I saw a spoon too!
Hope you have a great 2021 and will look forward to your vlogs even after lockdown but what a relief they were in 2020. Thanks and stay safe.
Love the clay pipe with the merry Christmas and happy New year writing on it and love all your clay pipe and all your finds happy New year and all best and great finds for 2021 love from New Zealand 😀😀😀😀👍👍👍👍👍👍
All the best wishes and finds for 2021 💕😁
Thank you! x
Can’t help but favorite the “Victoria “ shard!
I wonder why! 😄😘
Thank you for sharing your life with us. Your channel has always been one of my favorite. The nature you add to your videos is amazing. Your children are very special. You are very blessed. Happy New Year! 🎉
Thank you very much Ellna! Happy New Year to you.
James liked all your finds but especially the stretchy Spider-Man because he has one of them 😂
Thank you for sharing your adventure with us xx
ha ha thank you Emma and James. Yes, he now has a home in my studio! xx
I started singing The Boar Head's Carol--written by Henry the Vlll, thought it was most appropriate on the tusk discovery. Please have a wonderful New Year, you and your family have been a bright spot on the last year, and new shining hope for 2021--an art video from your studio would be fantastic. Love from Canada x
Me too Michelle! 🐗🐽
Thanks for going out on such a cold day to explore for us! Just so you know, your channel, with your finds, flora and fauna, and history of the treasures, has made a dark year so much easier to bear. You and all my other mudlarking friends always give me an adventure to look forward to and kept loneliness at bay. Thanks so much for that and I wish you a very happy, safe, healthy and fun New Year!
Thank you Lynn and I wish you a happy New Year too and I hope that this year is easier. Lots of love, Nicola xx
Thanks Nicola. Thanks Angelo, nicely done. I feel so sorry for the animals in winter. The calm water with those perfect reflections was awesome. Take care. This too shall pass.💜
Go Angelo go xxx thank you Nicola Happy 2021 xxx
Well, no, you actually do want your toothpaste in a squeeze tube! Imagine sticking a dirty spoon someone has licked into a jar of mayonnaise! Maybe a hair has fallen in too! That is how it would be in a pot! And remember, toothbrushes had bone handles and hog hair bristles until 1938 when plastic and nylon ones came along. But, someone should reproduce Victorian and Edwardian sets of toothpaste and toothpowder pots for display in bathrooms. The bone handle, hog hair toothbrushes are still made but they have gotten real expensive. The ones I had were like $6-$8 years ago. Now they are $30 when you can find them.
There was something interesting at 9:20 on the right, it looked like a little alien UFO. Maybe it was
a wheel hub.🙂
Thank you! I see your point ha ha. But yes, to display in the bathroom then! Good idea - I will check on the alien! x
What a great day out Nicola and so many good finds as always. Got to love those Pipe Bowls and the History that goes with them.
Nicola I hope you find some Trojan Gold in 2021 Good Luck
yes me too!! here's hoping xx
In the 1960s in the US there was a cartoon called The Flintstones. The 2 main characters belonged to a lodge called The Loyal Order of Water Buffalos. I wonder if that was a play on your RAOB.
We had that in the UK too. YABBA DABBA DOOoo
At 28:17 it looks like a figure standing in front of an ' om 🕉 ' symbol. I believe you are correct about it being a religious piece as it could be a hindu figure
I think you're right. That's what I see too
Lovely.....your videos went perfectly.....Happy New Year to you, and peace “please” within our world.......⚡️🎉💥
Thank you Angelo 2020 really went out with a bang!
It would be nice on special occasions to see more of Angelo and you too Nicola ,we know you can sing so a Duo would be perfect.
ah thanks very much Ralph. Ok, I'll work on that idea and see what Angelo suggests x
Worried for a minute there, that you’d stumbled on a real ... corpse!
You do have a plan, don’t you, about what to do if/when you stumble upon something ... that isn’t a clay pipe ... in the mud?
Thank you, Nicola and Angelo! Beautiful video!
Thank you Nancy!
Happy New Year to as well Nicola. Hope it will be filled with wonderful finds and joy. Thank you for your videos, they are always inspiring and helpful to pass the time when times can be a little gloomy. Hopefully the new year won't be as gloomy as the last.
The "Victoria" piece seems to refer to Victoria Station
From Italy,Happy New Year Nicola, and thank you for your always beautiful and very interesting videos.Baci.
Nicola and Angelo, Happy New Year. This was a wonderful video and Angelo's rendition of Hallelujah is just plain breathtakingly beautiful! Here's to a great 2021 for all of us, all over the world!
Thank you
What a wonderful video to start the New Year. So, now I know what a frozen Charlotte is, thanks for that Nicola. Ooh Angelo that gave me goosebumps!! Happy New Year xx
Happy New Year! 🎆
Hope yours is just the greatest ❤️
Thank you Tony! x
Happy New Year from the USA ! Lovely chilly lark today. A special treat from Angelo! Thank you!
happy new jear from germany.
Thank you!
Angelo that was the best, I've ever heard Hallelujah sung just breath taking thank you great voice!!❤
Love the hat! And the treasures!
Beautiful video to start off the new year. Plus lovely rendition of Hallelujah by Angelo. Perfect. Your videos are always interesting, uplifting and will have helped many of us through an awful year. Lots of good mudlarking videos out there these days but yours are especially facinating to see.
Hope your find wish is granted, I'm still on wishing for more than a shard of pipe bowl.... Stay safe and happy hunting in the new year. 💚
The pottery shard with "Victoria" looked like it was part of a Railroad scene. Do you think it might have been a commemorative piece of the founding of Victoria station?
Or Her Coronation with the bunting?
Happy New Year! A bit about the boar's head being served up... While I lived in Germany I had several chances to eat pig cooked on a spit (sometimes it was piglet, sometimes much larger)-- I lived out in the country, and the little towns around me loved to have spitted pork for festivals (there are companies that will deliver a fully-roasted spitted pig if you're willing to pay for it.) And one person serving it once told me that the pig's cheek was actually the very best meat on the pig, and absolutely a delicacy, which was one reason why the head was usually reserved for the noble's table at a feast. So first chance I got, I tried the cheek; and you know, they were totally right! It was like the most delicate ham you've ever tasted in your life, utterly delicious; I'd have it again in a heartbeat. ^__^ So there's a bit of weird trivia for you.
Thank you for the music and the river; both were beautiful.
No Boars head but Nicola could easily walk from where she larks to the Borough Market for a nice pork sandwich. Oh, that crackling!!!

My father was a member of the R.A.O.B he had a full outfit ,that when he died my mother gave it to the Lodge he went to
My Great grandfather was a member of the R.A.O.B. too in Birmingham
Happy New Year from Texas, would like to know when did those clay pipes go out of style, and is there anybody still making them. Not a smoker just curious.
Don’t know if you have been to York Railway museum but they have Victoria’s private carriage complete with miniature antique furniture. They also have the Flying Scotsman locomotive. Impressive place vis a vis your Victoria pottery shard. Happy New Year from Canada.
A nice end sequence to today’s video. A very nice rendition of a classic song and lovely to see the Thames wildlife and the fireworks lighting up the sky.
A very happy and healthy new year to you Nicola. Look forward to many more videos and let’s hope things get back to normal very soon.
Kind regards and respect,
