The Forgotten Treasure we found on an Unspoiled Island.Treasure hunting w/ Nicola White

- We unearthed forgotten treasures lost centuries ago when we visited the island of Alderney in June 2022 after being offered the chance to do some metal detecting there. Over the course of 3 days Jim our host took us to acres of land which was once home to Romans, Celts, Victorians, Georgians and everyone in between. It was exciting, especially knowing that the land had hardly been detected much over the years. My travelling and detecting companions were Simon Bourne of @Sifinds and Clem Chambers of @ChillBill1 . We were also accompanied by our host Jim, and Ed Staffin, who contributed the awesome drone footage to this video. Ed also has a RUclips channel and you can find it here - @edstaffin9036
As you will see we found some wonderful treasures between us and I would love to know more about the lion brooch (or is it a cap badge?) that I found. Please let me know if you have any suggestions as to what it used to be!
Not only is Alderney rich in history, but it is also a haven for beautiful wildlife. We visit Gannet Rock to see the gannet colony, thanks to Ed Staffin's super drone footage, and there is also wonderful footage of a baitball and dolphins at the end of this video. Dont miss it!
You can find out more about Alderney here:-
www.visitalderney.com/
It's the third largest channel island after Jersey and Guernsey, and it's 1.5 miles wide - and 3.5 miles long. Perfect. A peaceful place to escape the busy life of London that is for sure!
Thank you to Jim and Sue for being great hosts, and Thanks to my mud buddies Simon and Clem for being such great companions.
I use a deus orx in this video and highly recommend Regton metal detecting specialists if you want to get started in this fascinating hobby. They will give you all the info and advice you need:-

Now, I'm not going to do a spoiler alert but that Drone footage at the end is.....
Absolutely stunning and the accompanying music for it is totally 100% spot on! xx

Anyway, the porpoises and the birds were having a grand feast there.
What an amazing weekend that was. So much history in the Channel Isles that isn’t appreciated enough. I must admit I didn’t realise the importance of Alderney and Guernsey during WW2 until I visited, thanks to Nicola for inviting me and wisdom of Chill Bill, and to Jim and Sue, it was a trip I’d never thought it take otherwise. Great times 👍🏻🐾🧡
You should come and spend some more time in Guernsey. Some great finds have coming out of the fields recently.
It was so good to see you all together once again! And what a beautiful place!

For example, if you cut the grass yesterday, you might say, “I mowed the lawn yesterday.” Mown is often used as mow's past-participial adjective. So one might say, “The freshly mown grass looks nice.” But mowed is also sometimes used for this purpose.
Very well explained Stephanie1 Thank you :)
@@nicolawhitemudlark I'm afraid that I cannot take credit, you got me searching and a dictionary provided an answer that I would not have put so well ! xo

@pisswobble it amazes me that for someone who don’t care, you certainly took the time to read the comments and cared enough to reply 🤷♀️
I don’t believe mown is a word; is it? If so, I’ve never heard it used.
Thank you for taking us with you on your adventures while searching for treasures among the cow-pies. Alderney was so beautiful and rugged. You always choose the best music to accompany your videos. Thank you.
Thank you Janetta. I love choosing the music. x
Nicola I don't know if you know this or are interested in it or even your other mudlarkers but its something you might want to check into, But here in the USA the Mississippi River is at an all time low and people are walking the shores and mudlarking and metal detecting it.
Thank you. I would love to visit! I shall have to look into it. x
Can you imagine how many ships have foundered and sunk to the bottom around those dramatic rocks pushing up from the sea? If you could get down to the "foreshore" there, I wonder what you might find?
oh my goodness. Treasures galore! xx
I actually live on an island, an old British colony (Bermuda), and we are rather small ourselves - 23 miles long, about 1.5 miles wide at our widest point and 26 square miles of land in total.
There are many stories from many visiting mariners from the earliest years who say that the reefs around the island were ringed with the decaying masts of sailing ships that had come to grief. Indeed, some of our most prominent families got their start by wrecking, in which they lured ships upon the reefs by lighting fires upon hills. I can only imagine similar things happened there lol.

Oh, I love that lion! How nice. What a lovely show for a quiet Sunday, Thank you All.
I mowed the lawn. The grass has just been mown. ; ) Shovel could be a coal shovel for the stove, in a nice home? Awesome footage of the dolphins hunting fish!
A very nice video Nicola, great report.
28:01 a coal shovel that hung next to the fireplace.
yes, that is what I thought! Thank you
I wonder if your lion was once part of the decoration on a travel trunk- the kind which were covered in vellum and intended to carry valuables. That was quite a beautiful adventure, Nikola and I appreciate you taking us along. Thank you. Ps. I wonder if blonde hedgehogs really have more fun ? 😂
Haha love that 🤣
Greetings Nicola. Thanks for sharing another great video. Loved the lion head, did you Notice what looks like another animal just a above it? I could almost get smell the gannets from here😄! Great drone footage of dolphins feeding on a bait ball!
Thank you Karen. No I didn't notice but I will look. x
Hi, beautiful video and very informative as always. I noticed the little guy too, up to the right. It immediately brought to mind,
"And the lion shall lay down with the lamb". Not a completely accurate quote , but one generally meaning the wearer is looking forward to a time of peace. Thank you again.

I really enjoyed the variety of your finds, wildlife your company on this spectacular footage. Your swim in the ocean looked so refreshing. What a beautiful place to visit. Thank you for taking us along and showing us around. I throughly enjoyed it. ❤
It’s “mowed.” “ Mown” must be used with the verb “have,” as in “We have mown the grass already.” It’s called the past perfect verb form.
This is correct 💯.
I mowed the lawn.
The smell of new mown grass.
The smell of freshly mown hay.
Thank you for reminding me….my mother used to do it. I should have read your comment before I shot off a comment!
I think we say mowed in Texas. For all of it. Freshly mowed grass, we've mowed the lawn. Not sure I've ever heard someone use "mown" except in novels. LOL
I've heard and used both here in Michigan.
This was one of your best video's, the views, the findings, your company, loved it! 😍
Thank you Bernadette! Im so glad you enjoyed it. x
Thanks for bringing us the oustanding beauty and treasures of Alferney. Also the past history about the prison camps etc i never new that, all that sorrow, but now the island is quiet/peaceful.
Thanks Kim. Yes, nothing but peace now where those camps were. May we never forget. xx
BTW: He mowed the lawn lovingly, and he left that lawn well mown. At least that's how it works here in the Colonies.
Thanks!
Thanks Dustin! how lovely of you xx

Could you tell me Nicola, when those various clay pipes were being smoked in various times, how much did the clay pipes cost back then ???? It's so hard to believe they casually threw such beautiful things away. Love your videos, you always make me smile.
Your so smart, pretty and sweet. I just love it when you mudlark with your buddy Si !! God bless love to all Cathy from Seattle..
I've been on really off-the-beaten-track places in the American West (every US state and Canadian province west of my home in Wisconsin, including Alaska and the Yukon and Northwest Territories). Driving, hitch-hiking, biking, and hiking, sometimes miles away from any human roads, or even trails. There have been times when I've wondered how many other humans have stood in places where I have stood myself. Knowing that, since humans arrived here many thousands of years ago, I have not likely been the ONLY visitor anywhere, I think I've been one of very few in some really empty spots in the deserts, deep forests, and and mountains.
But when I watch your videos, Nicola, and see the amazing things you and all your friends find, not just along the banks of the Thames (where humans have lived in large numbers for millennia), but everywhere you go, it brings home to me just how much history you stand on, no matter where you are. That's humbling, and wonderful.
Also, no squizzle this week, but those fish and dolphins at the end were fantastic. That school of fish was much more fish than sea! Can you tell us what kind they were?
Thank you for your thoughts there. Some of the places you mention I would so love to visit. I will find out what fish they were from Ed. I actually don't know! I'll get back to you

Hi, Nicola. Susan here. I really didn't think you could top the drone footage from earlier, but that was amazing! As far as Mowed vs Mown, while the past tense is Mowed, you can have a freshly mown lawn. In French it would be the past participle. However, both seem to be accepted (especially in these days of texting phonetically!). My husband always say you don't mow the lawn, you coup de grace!
Hi Susan! ha ha love the coup de grace! Very sophisticated. Thank you for your kind comment. xx

Thanks for taking us with you on your Alderney adventure. You always have such a wonderful mix of finds, friends, music and photography. The drone footage was spectacular, especially the dolphins and the school of fish at the end. No thanks though for the ear worm of the Wombles of Wimbledon theme song - it was also popular in Australia. Come to think of it, the wombles have a resemblance to the blonde hedgehogs 😄
So awesome to see the gang back together with chill Bill Nicola and Si. The life of rich mudlarkers is a dream. I mean, come on, you guys are on a private plane being flown to a location that was pretty amazing. No one has ever really gone into this, but why on Earth do you all find so many coins in fields ❓❓❓❓ It's as if the people of old had constant holes in their pockets and carrying cases 🧐
ha ha. Well firstly, it looked like a private plane didn't it, but actually it's not private at all. It's the normal Alderney plane run by Aurigny! It was kind of them to let me film them. Then for the money, well, that 's a good question, but if there were fairs or picnics or walks or runs or events or whatever, going back down the ages, or villages etc... money will be dropped. sorry, that's not really very convincing is it!
Cotton rots out and wears out quite easily, that's why old coins fell out of pockets and buttons fell off and are found in fields. Modern cotton, certainly the kind you get on reels has a polyester/nylon mix with it making it stronger.
Ed’s an American - I was surprised! It’s cool that he could be part of this with y’all. His drone work is terrific 👍

I think the "shell" you found was a spent cartridge case from a 20mm gun. There are actually a couple of dozen different ones from the 1930s onwards and that one would have come from a German AA gun. Before that, the Hague Convention had banned any explosive projectile of less than 37mm calibre, so 20mm guns were not really a thing in WWI. What changed was the appearance of armoured vehicles on the battlefield, followed by the fitting of new, lightweight armour plates to the vital parts of aircraft and torpedo boats. Massive investment in 0.50" machine guns by the Americans notwithstanding, by WWII you didn't really stand much chance of shooting down an aircraft with anything smaller than a 20mm unless you scored about a hundred hits! That's why the early Spitfires and Hurricanes had eight .303" guns: to get the required number of hits in a single burst.
Thank you very much Matthew. I greatly appreciate your ordnance expertise! xx
