Did we just dig a Very Lucky Hole? Rare Beauties Uncovered in Scotland in a Hidden Secret Forest

- In a very remote hidden forest miles from anywhere in the Scottish countryside we struck bottle gold! In June of 2022 I had the pleasure of meeting up with Willie and Sarah of @livingtheskyelife . They took me to their secret bottle dump and somehow or other we hit exactly the right spot and find after find came out of a rather magical hole! I felt a bit like a bottle midwife :). What a lot of fun I had with Willie and Sarah. Willie kindly gave me a bit of a master class in digging for bottles. I learned a lot that day and ended up absolutely "puggled" - which is a Scottish word for tired. What a great word. We dug, danced and marvelled at our finds. The day went by in a shot and we went home dirty and happy.
Willie and Sarah also have a couple of other channels which you may have discovered already. For previous bottle digging and treasure hunting adventures check out @dirtysecretsofscotland and for walks in the glorious Scottish countryside and Sarah's painting - check out @shewalksshepaints
@livingtheskyelife follows Willie and Sarah's (and Jack Spaniels) adventures in their home on the Isle of Skye. Im looking forward to visiting immensely!
Thank you for watching.
See you soon.
Love Nicola

Hi Nicola! What a wonderful video of a fantastic day we had out bottle digging. We absolutely loved meeting you and we had so much fun. Hope you weren’t too ‘puggled’ after putting this together 😅 Sarah & Willie x
Can't wait to see you back at it, Willie!
So amazing to see a bottledump excavation ❤
Your finds at the old dump sight were wonderful, Congrats on your many beautiful specimens found!!!
Speaking of Puggled... a puggle is a baby platypus. Aussie mammal born from an egg. (Monotreme) 😉🇦🇺
I'm a Fifer from KIRKCALDY GOOD on you two 😊
Hi Nicola I am in Australia, and I work with a very old Man who comes from Fife and he just lights up delighted to watch these videos Thank you.❤
How sweet!
Willie and Sarah are such fun to watch.
Dancing and cheerful in the rain. Beautiful souls.
Aren’t they just! Such wholesome folk!
How would I describe this to someone who has never heard of mudlarkers or bottle diggers? Fun. Just plain, wholesome fun. Which we need more of in our tired old world.
Amongst all the pointless and destructive things people do nowdays how lovely to see 2 young people with such an interesting and enjoyable hobby 😊. Comes with groovy dancing too 💃🕺. Thanks so much!
Those belter dances are absolutely full of joy and they made my day!
So much fun. Such wonderful dancers. This was "soul food scottish style". Thank you all.
I thought I was perfectly content UNTIL I saw the dancing. Immediately a huge smile came to my face! I feel quite fortunate to meet your friends, for mudlarking, gourmet picnicking, metal detecting and even bottle digging. As I have said so many times, it isn't Sunday without Nicola.
Thank you! Glad it made you smile ❤
Good on you, Nicola. You’ve always been generous in alerting your subscribers to other mudlarkers.
The Nicola White Show ♥️ and her guests. 😍
Glad to see you branching out and adventuring more with other people who seek treasure in what was lost.
Dang GIRL! All The dirty dancing ,digging and the smile, says it all!
One thing I like about the mudlarkers is how you are all so happy when someone finds something exciting and how generous you are with each other.
As always we can count on you Nicola to bring us smiles all over the world! Yup the whole world!! Thank you for taking us along again! So fun!
I ❤ Willie & Sarah and will always enjoy their videos!!
I love digging bottle pits!
I was way down in the ground last one I dug and found a really nice, undamaged lithia water bottle. It is a blue half gallon with the goddess Artemis bathing herself and pouring water from an Amphora embossed on the front. It is from 1891-1906. Probably one of my best bottles!
I think mama squirrel got married and moved to the country but left baby squirrel for you to feed and nourish. 👍😎🇺🇸🇬🇧🇺🇦
The bottle excitement was almost too hard to observe Nic! It was just wonderful watching all of you digging out beautiful old bottles! I’ve had many similar experiences myself. Retrieving artifacts from our past is like mini archaeology and historical highs! My Grandparents traced my Mom’s side of the family to the 1250s Scotland and Castle rig. It makes me realize that we all are truly related, all Family! It’s grand! Thank You So Much Nicola and Sarah and Willy! What a great adventure to share! And how deserving of all those wonderful treasures you worked so hard for. The dancing was second to none! Many Blessings with Love, Light, Peace and Joy of Being and Great Treasures! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania
Thank you ❤️
The hat polish was for the straw hats that were so popular in the 1890's to 1910's. The kind that the barber shop quartets would wear with their striped suits.
Oh that Willie and Sarah are so much fun!!!! 😊
Oh the dancing! I’m still smiling!
Nicola: Thanks so much for taking us along with you to Scotland and the chance to meet Sarah & Willie. They are just two delightful folks with a real zest for life. Congratulations on those lovely ginger beer bottles. Great adventure!
And once again you have provided us with an absolute belter of a video (to coin another Willie phrase...lol) I am so happy that all of you are saving pieces of history from languishing in the ground, bringing them into the 21st century to delight all of us. As usual, thank you very much Nicola for making my small world here in southern Ohio a much brighter place with your charm, wit, and luck in the ...er...dirt? Mud? Muck! You have made my day!!!!
Sarah and Willie are just the cutest and are so delightfully fun to virtually explore with. When it warms up, I hope you’ll go visit with them again soon in Skye. I look forward to where you’ll take us next now that the weather is soon to begin to warm up a bit there for you. ❤
Scotland is indeed beautiful, I love the country.
A horseshoe means luck, you are very lucky now.
Lysol does have a very strong smell.
Wonderful vlog and finds.
She had good luck because she found the the horseshoe!
🙋🏼♀️🇺🇸🙏🏻
Hubby just found out he's 50% *Scottish!* Thanks, AncestryDNA. Greetings from New York :-D
Nicola...what a fun video. I loved Sarah and Willie. At the end you guys looked like 3 Woodland Gnomes dancing in sunlight. It made me laugh.
Hi Nicola! What a fun and fruitful dig. The dance in the trees was an absolute hoot!!
That’s a lovely green bottle. I like that pretty coronation cup Willie found. That stopper has a nice pattern. Lovely whole ginger beer bottle. Great dancing 😃. Some pretty pottery pieces, and the second stopper was lovely too. That Lysol ad, 😂. Another lovely ginger bottle. Hat polish? I never knew hats were polish, but the bottle is really nice. Sarah’s furniture cream bottle is nice also. Rain and all, a wonderful video. Good on you all 👍.
Lovely video, Nicola. Amazing what can be found in a hole in a rubbish dumping area. Can't imagine what our ancestors would say about us digging up their rubbish and collecting it as treasures. Great finds. Sarah and Willy seem like delightful people. Awesome to see you branch out and the different ways of discovering the past. Love and peace.
Hi to three of my favorites! Nicola, Sarah and Willie! I love you guys!
I have watched you on the Thames for a few years now and truly enjoy your adventures and finds!! I must say, that was one of the most exciting adventures I have watched in a long time. I think it is exciting to watch someone extract a long discarded treasure out of the ground and hope that it is in one piece. I truly, truly enjoyed that. Looking forward to watching Willy and Sarah's channels. Thank you for sharing, love from Canada 💚
Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: Oh my goodness! Hello from Michigan, USA! As a rockhound with interests in History and Sociology...this type work is up my alley. Now unable to do such activities, it's so lovely to tag along in your knapsack via video! Now I've found you...I'm hooked!
Welcome Kelly!
That Codd bottle! My grandad used to break off the lids to get the marble! He was born in 1905 in Surrey.
Delighted that Japan still uses them a lot for fizzy drinks!
Great, fun video. Rubbish pits like this were called 'middens' in Scotland. Presumably there was a 'big house' or farm nearby once.
The dancing was the proverbial, icing on the cake!
I think you found a party spot from a long time ago. All those empty beer bottles and the urge to dance every few minutes?
Sounds like a party place to me!
I loved the word ‘puggled’ - in Australia a puggle is a baby echidna which in someway is fitting as they are babies they sleep a lot.
Really loved this video and the collaboration with Willie and Sarah. You all had some fabulous finds. The celebratory dancing made the snowy, Michigan day seem so much brighter. Here's hoping to many more successful treasure hunts.
Is there nothing better than seeing two pretty girls doing a happy dance in a hole over a couple of nice bottle finds? I think not…😊👍👍
It's amazing that all those bottles are still in great condition. Great finds.
These are mostly re-usable bottles that would have had a deposit on them. So, nearer civilisation you are mainly going to find broken ones, but if you're really out in the sticks you might find intact ones that were too much bother to carry back home to re-use. It's notable how much glass/earthenware there is in these bottles for a small amount of ginger beer! Made them strong enough to re-use, but in the days before widespread car-ownership you might not have wanted to carry an empty one five or six miles. Modern glass bottles are technological wonders because they are much thinner than they were in my childhood and actually less prone to break. It's partly a matter of industry building up knowledge on which exact curves and diameters are the least fragile.
When my parents lived in Salisbury (low-rise housing, wooden stairs to any flats), milk bottles had an average life better than five uses, according to the local dairy. When they moved to Edinburgh with all the four or five-story tenement buildings with _stone_ staircases leading up to the flats, the milk bottles survived a _maximum_ of three uses.
This has to be the winner of the weeks delightful video!👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻💖💖
You all did so well !! AND given a whole new meaning to Scottish Dancing !!
Thank you Nicola for your video with Sarah and Willie!
I hope you have the opportunity to visit them on the Isle of Skye.
I definitely will!
Ooow, LOVED this, honestly, it put joy into my soul, thank you. What a lovely couple, I shall be keeping an eye on them! Creative people gel beautifully, thank you, I am inspired to be creative. x x x
Great finds always come with lucky shoes being found - just keep the shoe upwards !!!
The last dance appearing from behind the trees was SO cute!
What a fabulous bunch ! I thoroughly enjoyed that, Nicola. Your happy dances really made me smile.
👏 Willey asked for a round of applause, Best I can do.Nice catches on the Ginger Bottles. Had a blue poison bottle, lost. Keep up the good work. Thanks m8, Ile of Skye and Thanks Willie an Sarah. Fife and Skye are aways. Wonderful to see Ms Squirrels kit [daughter] or pup [son]. You squirrel had to do something to keep warm over winter 😉
First I found you Nicola, and then found more Mudlarkers and now I am hooked!!! You folks are just so much fun!
Came to see the discoveries; stayed for the dance.
Hello. This is only the 2nd time I have watched your videos. They are delightful. I really enjoy Willie and Sarah's channel. Now I can add a new mudlarking channel to my favorites. You hand feeding that little squirrel at the end was so sweet to see. Keep up the good works. God bless.
Thank you Angela! ❤️
OMG ! what a marvelous Lark / dig . I felt the excitement in Tennessee USA . Brilliant finds Congratulations too ALL .
Loved the dancing and had a Great time . ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
What a wonderful Sunday for me! A Scottish bottle hunt with Nicola White and such interesting finds. Thanks,
For people renowned for their frugality, the Scots sure threw away a lot of perfectly good bottles!
What a lovely couple! Nicola attracts the sweetest, most interesting people, which makes perfect sense.
Brilliant video, some excellent finds by all, However!! The dance totally made my day - I’m still smiling!
Thankyou for yet another episode with Nicola White and friends xx
You are always such a gracious host, Nic and I love those prints, Sarah! Great finds. 😊❤
Hi Nicola, I’ve recently discovered Willie and Sarah’s channels. What a delight they are to watch with their pup. I’m so glad you were able meet up and bottle dig with them. There were so many interesting finds! Thanks for sharing your lovely outing.
Squirrels in the nest are kits or pups, I believe, and at six weeks they become juveniles. Squirrel maybe in the nest with a new litter, assuming squirrels in the UK have the same habits as the ones in the Eastern US. ❤️
Lisa from VA US
Its sooo good to see you dancing it put the biggest smile on my face😄😀😊🥳👯♂️💃🕺💃🕺👯♀️
What a 'belter' of a video Nicola. So glad you have teamed up with Sarah & Willy again. I watch all their channels and love them. Take care and best wishes, John.
What a great dig.
You sure lucked out with the 2 ginger beers. It looked like fun. 3 Talented people.
Amazing video!
Love your bottles 🍾🍾
Greeting from Austria 🇦🇹
LOL, I loved the dance part! And what beautiful woods to be in.
Scotland is indeed beautiful, I love the country.
A horseshoe means luck, you are very lucky now.
Lysol does have a very strong smell.
Wonderful delivery and finds.
My husband and I had a wonderful arrow head collection from a couple from a places we had checked out, but somehow it became our sons finds! Good thing we had only one child! Also a huge Woodley mammoth was found within a mile of our home, it now resides in the Arkansas State museum in Jonesboro Arkansas.
Doing the dance is showing your appreciation for your gifts.
Nicola what a exciting day and video! So much fun . The dancing made my day !!!❤
Such a fun video, Nicola!
Belter dancing, at it's best! 💃🕺
You'll have to go to Skye for Part II w. Willie & Sarah!
hello from Denmark 🌸❄️
The ginger beet bottles you found on this dig are amazing. I follow Willie and Sarah on all their channels and they are a lovely couple. So fun to see you spending the day with them!
Fantastic art piece bottles...Scotland where the real people are.😂 Love it. Thank u
Love watching both Nicola and Living the Sky Life. So excited to see you getting together. What a treat 😊
All the finds were great, yours were really great! But you know why you found them don't you.......that lucky horseshoe!! Hope you brought it home with you. Oh, and I absolutely Love to see litte Miss Squirrel! 😊 Till next time Nic, I'll be waiting.
Thanks Nicole. Enjoyed the dancing. Have a great week.
I will be purchasing some of Sarah’s prints very soon,as I usually do when you feature an artist, patronage is my groove.
It’s a good thing that I wasn’t there with you guys,because I only dance robot-style.
I would have been a square peg in a round mud hole.
If anyone wants to try a proper ginger beer, here in America, get yourself some ‘Fever Tree’ ginger beer.
It is precisely what would have been in those old stoneware bottles!
The first sip will make you cough,it’s that unexpected!
We all approve of your groove, that's nice!
Aye that was an adventure in Scottish woods. I have been following Sarah&Willie for some time, I love Scotland too (of course after London). Great finds those Ginger Beer bottles, not only pottery pieces but whole bottles. Well it's late now and I'm puggled too. Have a wonderful week Nicola! xx
Nicola, you are a good sport...with your celebratory dance moves.
This is the best bottle dig I've ever seen. Well done. I love digging bottles. Crack on.
Clydesdales horses are originally from Scotland! A very big horse!
Fun video. Thx for taking us along. What an interesting bottle Sarah found with the fist holding an arrow. It looks like a torse beneath - like you see on livery buttons.
What a fun video. They look like a fun couple. How nice of them to bring you to such a beautiful place. The " bottle dance" was so cute. Reminds me a little of "I'm on vacation dance" at work right before I leave for the day.
Very nice finds. The condition of the trash pit artifacts in comparison to Thames items is quite remarkable. The ceramic bottles and jars from the pit look practically new. They'd never look that pretty after a century in the Thames. The ginger beer bottles are off the scale.
Thanks Mike!
Another fab adventure - this time with the Delightfully Daft Dancing Diggers...🥰
Great episode! Y’all are nice folks! As soon as Sarah said “Newcastle” I thought of Sarah Milligan (South Shields) and Kate Jackson ( Hexham) at the Last Homely House. Looks like I’ll have to visit some day. I found a large version of the ink filler under the floor of my 200-yr-old house here in the US in perfect condition. Made in England. I feel your excitement!
Hello Jane! It was really great to see your comment! It looks like we subscribe to similar channels! Kate Jackson is another great favourite of mine! All such wonderfully wholesome folks! Aren’t we fortunate to share their lives and interests? You old property sounds fascinating - have you researched its history? Best regards from Chris in the English Midlands.
Having a good time? lol You look thrilled with your finds, great happy dance folks! I actually have been following this couple when they found, then purchased and moved to their home in Skye! What a fun time for you! So many belters!
Very wonderful adventure, digging and dirty dancing 💃🕺🏻with Willie and Sarah 😊 I certainly enjoyed every bit ❤ Congratulations 🍾🎉🎊🎈 on your belter finds ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Amazing times for you 💜💜💜💜💜
