honestly, the direction Shadow High has taken is disappointing. They haven't made a doll that interested since series 1. The grey scale was so unique and it made them play more with textures. I wish they would go back to that, maybe there would be one I enjoy again. I own 3 shadow high dolls for context, Nicole, Onyx, and Harvey.
The grayscale dolls were really cool but unfortunately kids aren't really interested in them. Kids are more likely to gravitate towards colorful things which is likely why they started adding color to SH dolls. For me though, the last SH that interested me was the neon rainbow(?) line bc I'm a sucker for neon lol but I definitely agree the grayscale was more interesting- at least for adult collectors
The greyscale dolls are my favourite and was what got me collecting dolls as an adult! But i do love the new shadow high line even though they look more like rainbow high dolls. The red ones fur coat isn't shadow high like at all 😔 But I will restyle her to look more devilish. If they aren't going to do greyscale anymore I would love if they at least did more alternative fashions. Like goth, punk and Japanese styles like lolita.
@@em84cThe first Shadow High series is what got me started collecting dolls too. My best friend is a collector and those beautiful grayscale dolls are what got me to start buying too. I have since collected a lot of RH in general, and love the variety of colors, but I do wish there was more of the original SH asthetic in the newer SH lines.
Scarlet from the new Shadow High has definitely grown on me massively since I first saw her, but I’m very aware that her accessories, the Storywood tease on the sweater, and my favorite face sculpt are doing some heavy lifting for how much I like her. The new Rainbow High releases in general are so baffling and just feel slightly off to me? I do like all the new unique accessories for the SH lineup though.
I feel the same, I love that she's this writer girl, the majors and accessories are more unique, and I see a lot of potential with her base doll, but drastically restyled. I wish they had run with a cozy academia aesthetic - 'Storywood' evokes a lot more cottage in the woods fairytale to me, and I picture her as someone else, someone who wears knit sweaters (can you imagine, a KNIT piece for SH?) and plaid skirts and sits in a little mom and pop coffee shop sipping apple cider trying to work on her book. This girl looks like she's just trying to market merch for a Storywood franchise that someone else wrote

The reactions on the Bratz x Kylie Jenner collab is so accurate like it's such a confounding choice. Nothing about Kylie Jenner seems to fit Bratz y2k style. Plus Bratz was always loved for it's diversity and collabing with a white celebrity who is infamous for appropriating black and latino culture is just... not hot.
100% agree, i think they just went: “kylie lipkits + bratz also has big lips = doll” which i mean okay ??? but then again another point is that the kardashian jenner family has sort of “soft rebranded” themselves in the eyes of the general public to where everyone has sort of forgotten or is ignoring it in lieu of other things… which sucks but they are not the first celebrity nor the last this will happen too

Are you talking about the Fresh Beats? Because I struggle to call those dolls Rainbow High rip-offs. If anything, their style seems more similar to LOL OMG. But regardless, I don’t think we should consider a doll a rip-off just because they happen to share a few similarities to an existing doll line (in this case, big heads and extra articulation-which isn’t even a very unique feature).

Shadow High: I bought Berrie Skies and Rosie Redwood. They are STUNNING in person. I know Berrie Skies says computer animation focus, but her little laptop has visual studio open doing web development. My job is a web developer, and I'm really into the tech / cyberpunk / Y2K insipred fashion. I normally don't display my dolls with accessories, but I have to have her holding her laptop, and she's at my desk. The details on Rosie are beautiful. I mostly focus on cool-colored dolls whose fashions I like, but I couldn't pass her up.
Saaaaame! I just got Berrie today and the little details on her are so cute! I’m not a computer expert but my husband is a network/systems engineer so there’s always computer parts in my house. I’m seriously thinking about making a little desk or chair out of old CD’s for her an possibly Zooey because the Green Geek Squad need to hang out together! I really wish Berrie’s name was something else though. Creativity seems to be waning in the name department at MGA. I do collect some Barbies, but most are older; 80’s-90’s. I do have two Movie dolls. I really hope I can get my hands on a Dia De Muertos Skellita! She’s beautiful!

Yeah the Barbies I do have are mostly from the 80's and 90's (my childhood) and I'd like to own more. But I'll hunt them down once the Barbie movie craze dies off a bit more. I've got 4 movie dolls now (Pink gingham, rollerblade, and pink jumpsuit Barbie and beach Ken, Fur coat Ken won't get here till February). I just really need the rollerblade Ken though. I did get a few of the Extras, and a good chunk of the Extra fly dolls, and I've got a few of the Looks dolls that I really liked or were on sale. Oh, and I love the 80's rewind dolls. I have two of those now. But overall, I feel like modern Barbie is just very meh, especially with playline dolls. I think they were trying to name the characters based on color and then design came second. Berrie really needs some sort of computer part name lol. Rosie Redwood doesn't make sense, Sakura Redwood would've worked better for her. Pinkly and PINKIE yeah, good going lol. I guess it's more about the design of the doll rather than the name. Oh well.

The Style Bae dolls are really cute, and (in my opinion) a great idea. They’re combining hair play with a stronger, plastic paper doll, so they have a much bigger selection of clothes for a cheaper price, and you can easily draw and cut out some old school paper fashions easier and faster than sewing a new outfit. My younger sister and I would have LOVED those. My only critique is they should have had magnetic stick clothing instead of stickers, as I feel that would have held up better.
Magnetic would have been so much better for longevity, but maybe it was a question of layering? I have a few dress up character magnet sets (Pusheen and Hello Kitty) and it's really finicky getting the little accessories to stick over the clothes. They jolt around and repel so sometimes they don't quite lay the way I want.

5:40 I'm very confused on why Mattel calls these fashionistas, to me are just no better than the budget dolls meant for really small kids, for them to destroy without hurting the wallet too much 💀Besides, they won't even get the reference on tributing the original Barbie either... I think we'll know for sure if they are aware when they release a second wave. If it's just more dolls maybe, and if it includes fashion packs, probably not.
I like them in concept because they can have just a ridiculous amount of outfits for cheap. My favorite thing about dolls is dressing them up in fun clothes, and fashion packs essentially being sticker packs that are inexpensive to produce while having almost infinte possibility is genius. It's like a physical version of the dress up avatar apps I've been addicted to for two decades lmao. Paper dolls you can't tear with hair you can style? So weird but I respect the heck out of it.

I'm in agreement of the new Shadow High lineup being very mid in the design department (And also name department). I will say that Berrie Skies is absolutely stunning in her details, even if her execution isn't the best, and I do love her concept. I also like Scarlet, Oliver and Rosie (Rosie's jacket is gorg btw) but they're nothing special. The less we talk about Pinkie James and Lavender Lynn the better... It's kinda a shame to see Shadow High go from the edgier alternative to Rainbow High to Rainbow High but they have unnatural skin tones. I know it's probably due to sales but they could've tried a lil harder with the designs. I just think in general that both Rainbow and Shadow High are in a very weird place right now. I can't exactly describe why, but the newer releases don't really fit the vibe of the doll line.
I don't know why but SH and RH are my new THING... I love seeing them, I love their accessories. SH especially with the fantasy skin tones look so nice lined up with each other, and I'm very keen on collecting more of them.

Weirdly enough I just bought Scarlet yesterday (haven't found Lavender yet otherwise she would have been first.) Scarlet is a gorgeous doll with great accesories but her outfit is definitely boring. The little paper books and her face won me over but I fully get why she's not jumping out at people. As a name nerd I feel you fully on the names of these newest RH and SH releases, lowkey wish they'd hire a baby name consultant or something because they clearly need help. 😭

My mom had some as a kid, and I enherited them. U could also occasionally still get them in stores in the 90's. They were fun and easy to make your own clothes for.

The placement of that commercial break, right at the end of the silent read, is amazing. I do think the fashions on the new SH aren't really up to the scale of the previous ones, but I am cool with them introducing a few more items that are more lay (down) than slay. The strength of RH is in its broad variety of clothes for styling for me. Let girlies be basic! Storybrook does need a statement piece though I agree. Shoes don't fucking count in fact give me more shoes like crocs
I think with the howliday collectors, yes they are very similar styled in silhouettes but it makes it easy to display together coz of the cohesiveness. Like if they were designed for the year and not as full line it could look cray

Rosie and Blu came in the mail last week! To me, Rosie's coat is the whole reason I bought her, but I added a black belt from Uma's jacket and I gotta say it is SHOWSTOPPING now. Blu is cute, I got her because I liked her color and body (which is also curvy in addition to short.) I put her in Heather's jersey dress and socks, her own shoes, and Tiara's tiara, and she looks sooooo cute! Stretchy clothes still fit on her, which I had a surprising amount of in my collection
I really like Rosie, pinkie and berry. I think their outfits are cute, and each has outfit elements I find creative. Lilac is cute, the others don't really have much interesting going on beyond the new body types.
The Pinkie doll just makes me wish I could buy the base doll and save a few bucks. I think her base doll is absolutely gorgeous - my favourite in the rainbow high franchise so far.
Doll releases feel like either feast or famine. I'm still working on collecting the RH Runway dolls. I did preorder Howliday Clawdeen, because I like the Winter Solstice theme, and purple is my favorite color. I'm reeeeeally hoping that Vampire Heart Draculaura comes back into stock on Amazon. She's like the platonic ideal of Draculaura for me. If I can get her, she's going on display next to my Mme Alexander Black Panther doll. The pet line just dropped for MH as well. I'm looking forward to the "School's Out" dolls for Drac and Clawdeen - I adore them both. And the SH dolls look so much better in person - I saw them at Target this past weekend, and I was surprised by just how much prettier they are than the stock images.

You are so funny :) I love it when you were just sitting there during the Jenner dolls. I am very disappointed with SH now,. They don't have any of the dark aesthetic they used to have, and in my mind were supposed to be a more Gothic alternative to RH. Now, as you said, there really is no difference between the two lines :( I do want to get some of the new MH dolls but will have to get them online, or drive hours away. I just found out to my shock, and dismay that my local Walmart will no longer be carrying MH dolls! That is so upsetting and I don't understand why they are doing this. As to other dolls, I don't know. It doesn't seem like any brands other than MH are coming out with dolls I like. I wonder if any new brands will show up next year that may have some good dolls.

Saaaaame! I just got Berrie today and the little details on her are so cute! I’m not a computer expert but my husband is a network/systems engineer so there’s always computer parts in my house. I’m seriously thinking about making a little desk or chair out of old CD’s for her an possibly Zooey because the Green Geek Squad need to hang out together! I really wish Berrie’s name was something else though. Creativity seems to be waning in the name department at MGA.
I do collect some Barbies, but most are older; 80’s-90’s. I do have two Movie dolls. I really hope I can get my hands on a Dia De Muertos Skellita! She’s beautiful!

Yeah the Barbies I do have are mostly from the 80's and 90's (my childhood) and I'd like to own more. But I'll hunt them down once the Barbie movie craze dies off a bit more. I've got 4 movie dolls now (Pink gingham, rollerblade, and pink jumpsuit Barbie and beach Ken, Fur coat Ken won't get here till February). I just really need the rollerblade Ken though. I did get a few of the Extras, and a good chunk of the Extra fly dolls, and I've got a few of the Looks dolls that I really liked or were on sale. Oh, and I love the 80's rewind dolls. I have two of those now. But overall, I feel like modern Barbie is just very meh, especially with playline dolls.
I think they were trying to name the characters based on color and then design came second. Berrie really needs some sort of computer part name lol. Rosie Redwood doesn't make sense, Sakura Redwood would've worked better for her. Pinkly and PINKIE yeah, good going lol. I guess it's more about the design of the doll rather than the name. Oh well.
I'm an aspiring graphic designer, currently working on a degree in the field. Currently I'm learning web design! I just have to say I'm happy to hear that someone else in the field enjoys dolls
yk what I was disappointed about how similar Berrie and Zooey are but now tht I think about it I think she’d actually make a perfect gift for my mom. 🥹 My mom teaches an engineering class so her being a techie really matches her and since I already have Zooey it can be like having matching dolls together!!

The Style Bae dolls are really cute, and (in my opinion) a great idea. They’re combining hair play with a stronger, plastic paper doll, so they have a much bigger selection of clothes for a cheaper price, and you can easily draw and cut out some old school paper fashions easier and faster than sewing a new outfit.
My younger sister and I would have LOVED those. My only critique is they should have had magnetic stick clothing instead of stickers, as I feel that would have held up better.
Magnetic would have been so much better for longevity, but maybe it was a question of layering? I have a few dress up character magnet sets (Pusheen and Hello Kitty) and it's really finicky getting the little accessories to stick over the clothes. They jolt around and repel so sometimes they don't quite lay the way I want.
@@psychotophatcat oh that’s a good point about the layering (I kinda remember some smaller magnetic paper dolls not having their shoes ever go on correctly because of that). I wonder if there is a good thickness for them that would work…? Maybe if the jackets have stronger magnets….? I wonder how you would go about fixing that?

I saw the Style Bae dolls in another video, and my only complaint I guess it would be the clothes. They would work way better as magnets instead of stickers. More durable, less stickiness, etc.

I like them in concept because they can have just a ridiculous amount of outfits for cheap. My favorite thing about dolls is dressing them up in fun clothes, and fashion packs essentially being sticker packs that are inexpensive to produce while having almost infinte possibility is genius. It's like a physical version of the dress up avatar apps I've been addicted to for two decades lmao. Paper dolls you can't tear with hair you can style? So weird but I respect the heck out of it.

I'm in agreement of the new Shadow High lineup being very mid in the design department (And also name department). I will say that Berrie Skies is absolutely stunning in her details, even if her execution isn't the best, and I do love her concept. I also like Scarlet, Oliver and Rosie (Rosie's jacket is gorg btw) but they're nothing special. The less we talk about Pinkie James and Lavender Lynn the better...
It's kinda a shame to see Shadow High go from the edgier alternative to Rainbow High to Rainbow High but they have unnatural skin tones. I know it's probably due to sales but they could've tried a lil harder with the designs.
I just think in general that both Rainbow and Shadow High are in a very weird place right now. I can't exactly describe why, but the newer releases don't really fit the vibe of the doll line.
I really wish Shadow Hugh would go back to greyscales dolls. It made them stand out and they looked so cool.
I don't know why but SH and RH are my new THING... I love seeing them, I love their accessories. SH especially with the fantasy skin tones look so nice lined up with each other, and I'm very keen on collecting more of them.
The SH and RH dolls are just so nice, I get what you mean! The acrylic eyes really make them stand out, they just feel more luxurious with their quality

Weirdly enough I just bought Scarlet yesterday (haven't found Lavender yet otherwise she would have been first.)
Scarlet is a gorgeous doll with great accesories but her outfit is definitely boring. The little paper books and her face won me over but I fully get why she's not jumping out at people.

I think the Style Bae it's a neat concept, especially where nowadays it's hard to get decent fashion packs (bombastic side eyes to fashionistas). I'm currently focus collecting Fashion Fever and I miss the era where doll companies offers lot of decent fashion packs, not just the dolls. Tho they're more like paper dolls so I'm curious with the "clothing" quality so far.

The flat dolls seem like they took heavy inspoiration from the paper dolls that were all the rage a few generations ago. My mom had some as a kid, and I enherited them. U could also occasionally still get them in stores in the 90's. They were fun and easy to make your own clothes for.

Rosie and Blu came in the mail last week! To me, Rosie's coat is the whole reason I bought her, but I added a black belt from Uma's jacket and I gotta say it is SHOWSTOPPING now.
Blu is cute, I got her because I liked her color and body (which is also curvy in addition to short.) I put her in Heather's jersey dress and socks, her own shoes, and Tiara's tiara, and she looks sooooo cute! Stretchy clothes still fit on her, which I had a surprising amount of in my collection

I really like Rosie, pinkie and berry. I think their outfits are cute, and each has outfit elements I find creative. Lilac is cute, the others don't really have much interesting going on beyond the new body types.

Doll releases feel like either feast or famine. I'm still working on collecting the RH Runway dolls. I did preorder Howliday Clawdeen, because I like the Winter Solstice theme, and purple is my favorite color. I'm reeeeeally hoping that Vampire Heart Draculaura comes back into stock on Amazon. She's like the platonic ideal of Draculaura for me. If I can get her, she's going on display next to my Mme Alexander Black Panther doll. The pet line just dropped for MH as well. I'm looking forward to the "School's Out" dolls for Drac and Clawdeen - I adore them both. And the SH dolls look so much better in person - I saw them at Target this past weekend, and I was surprised by just how much prettier they are than the stock images.

You are so funny :) I love it when you were just sitting there during the Jenner dolls. I am very disappointed with SH now,. They don't have any of the dark aesthetic they used to have, and in my mind were supposed to be a more Gothic alternative to RH. Now, as you said, there really is no difference between the two lines :( I do want to get some of the new MH dolls but will have to get them online, or drive hours away. I just found out to my shock, and dismay that my local Walmart will no longer be carrying MH dolls! That is so upsetting and I don't understand why they are doing this. As to other dolls, I don't know. It doesn't seem like any brands other than MH are coming out with dolls I like. I wonder if any new brands will show up next year that may have some good dolls.
