    I think of pegboards/pegboard walls as being used to hang a large variety of small hand tools (screwdrivers, wrenches, hammers, etc.). These are really cool and I definitely see a utility for them in certain situations, but I don't see them replacing pegboard for what I consider it's main purpose.

      After building a cleat system for my studio - I agree. Cost & time involved aren't worth it for small-medium items.
      My next studio & garage/workshop will have a different system.
      Cleats will be for select heavy items & will most likely be more of a single strip/ledger system

      I discovered French cleats about 30 years ago when I had a heavy mirror to hang. The mirror needed to be centered above a sink, but the the studs behind the wall were not centered behind the sink. With the French cleat I attached the wall part to two studs and let it overhang, so I could center the mirror where I needed it. It worked perfectly.
      On the other hand, I don't see using French cleats to hang hammers, pliers, and screwdrivers like I would on pegboard.

    If you can make a set of French cleats to display/ hang power tools like the pegboard system, then I'm all eyes and ears. My house came with a pegboard in the garage and I am barely getting around to organizing the power tools in it. I am adding a few battery holders and chargers to it. But if you can accomplish the same goal: organizing/displaying, while looking good and being modular, then I would prefer this system, over a pegboard.

  • @naimahq8739
    @naimahq8739 7 месяцев назад +1

    Mmmh it’s smart and neat but doesn’t replace pegboards BECAUSE you don’t have options to adjust the storage space via french cleats as they are like regular shelves. Pegboards allow you to move up or down, side to side depending on what you need within a moment.

  • @AlDim000
    @AlDim000 3 года назад +16

    Pegboards are vastly superior for spacing your smaller tools exactly the way you want. Obviously they are not designed for holding heavier items. That is the entire point - different methods have different uses. You can't dismiss pegboards and say that everyone needs to go with French cleats. Your system here would be entirely useless for the tool wall in my garage and would use up way more space.

    They were common for fitting kitchen wall cupboards fifty years ago... And it is exactly what a picture rail is! French cleats are great for hanging heavy stuff when you keep changing your mind where you want it. For small hand tools pegboard rules. I have 137 tools mounted on my wall above my bench. Try that with cleats. For other stuff shelves, trolleys and trays have their place. Not saying french cleats aren't useful, just that they are not the answer to everything.

    I love the idea of french cleats. My problem is how to cut the wood at 45 degrees without a table saw. I love woodworking and have made many creations using wood cut by b&q, then a circular saw, a kreg jig, then sanded. I know the circular saw can do 45 degrees cuts, but I can't work out how to do it safely and accurately on such narrow bits of wood.

    • @Keep-Making
      @Keep-Making  4 года назад +1

      Hey Paul, I'm glad you're a fan of the idea and I'm a big advocate of safety so thanks for thinking that threw. Honestly, if I had to do with without a table saw I would use a jigsaw or at a push the hand saw on top of a fit of kingspan / sturdy foam insulation. of some kind. All so remember that the wood does not need to be narrow to start with. Maybe cutting the 45 degrees in first and then cutting down a strip might be the way to go? Good luck, stay safe and let me know how it goes.

      Circular saw with adjustable blade 👍

    • @lmorgan877
      @lmorgan877 4 года назад

      Buy a large sheet, cut 45 degrees with a circular saw and then cut off a strip or use a router with a 45 degree chamfer bit. If it's pure function your going for and not aesthetics you can cut relatively short lengths (1 - 3 feet) with a handsaw or use a hand plane if your working with wood and not synthetic boards like ply or mdf. Some of my French cleats are dog rough but work just fine.

    • @jameela.bandali9044
      @jameela.bandali9044 3 года назад +1

      If I were to use a circular saw, I'd start with a wider plank that can support the saw's shoe completely - cut your 45 degree angle and then straighten the blade to cut the strip of wood to the desired width. As you've said, starting with a narrow length of wood that requires support from another plank and then using clamps is risky.

    I'm wondering what the OP's thoughts are comparing/contrasting french cleats with their Multiboard project.
    I note that there is a cleat mounting option for Multiboard tiles, so they're probably quite complementary with direct attachment to the cleats being useful for heavier items that the tiles can't support.

  • @Dogonatree

    My thoughts on the French aside, plywood and wood in general is super expensive, cleats are somewhat custom and hard to interchange, cumbersome, very limited in where you put things due to the spacing of rails. Pegboard and some dedicated shelves win in my book.

      Hey Robin, I love the idea of using it for filament storage. In fact, that is one for the idea I'm thinking of using my cleats for myself. Well, I can tell you right now that I have put all my weight on just one of my cleats and they held up. Yes, screw spacing is a big part and if you can get a stud even better. I would advise not using OSB or MDF for the cleat as they can break apart quite quickly. I hope that helps.

    Not understanding your all in enthusiasm. Yes its good for strength and the ability to move an item from place to place. But you can also do that with pegboard. Need more strength? Use metal pegboard. Use thicker pegboard. Use stronger hanging adapters or whatever you call them (hooks?). French Cleats are so limiting because of the vertical spacing between them. I would have made the spacing much less. I think the main reason people like French Cleats is they just hate the look of pegboard. People associate with rotting cardboard. If its got a silver finish it looks great. The solution is buy quality metal pegboard and use it for decades. And know your hook/hanging options well. And remember, both systems are vulnerable if an item on the wall is jostled upward.

    How about NO. Peg boards look neater and uniformed.

    WOW You're work is beautiful!!!...I am artistic and creative But totally ignorant when it comes to the artistry of woodwork, but have ordered a french cleat board to organize my tools since pegboard is now so overpriced since it is super fashionable to have in the arts community 😊...some of us regular novices can't afford hundreds of dollars for storing our paints, lol...I cannot make my own cleat storage but noticed you were using hooks as the cleats?
    Could you let me know where I may purchase these or anything similar to attach to my own containers to hook over the wooden cleat wall bars?
    Many Thanks, Sarah 💖

    The real advantage of the French cleat system for me is that I can easily make holders suited to my work flow. Plus take them off of the wall and place them on my bench where I may need them. An example would be the auger bits to the work bench, or the sanding block collection to the project.
    Some items merely need a cleat attached to them to make them more versatile, such as the speakers for my music just needed a small cleat on the back to get them off of the bench. A small cleat on cheap parts bins gets them off them bench and on the wall.

    I just ordered a pegboard, but id like to use this system as well. Are they ok to use on dividing walls or partician walls?

    Love the idea but how did you attach to the wall? you show plenty of screws ? Did you just screw into a plaster wall or was the wall timber.

      I used J-plugs when it's not hitting a beam and just screws then there is a stud.

    great video, I especially love the reversible shelf.
    Do you think it would be possible to hold an LED screen?

    Great idea but a misleading title.
    I mean every storage solution will have its limitations and I don’t agree that pegboards are useless. They are less time consuming and cheaper. Also what if don’t need the stuff to move? It can stay where I had put it.
    So may be it’s not “useless” but just a different option, that’s all

    How compatible is this with cats? Would the shelves and cleated cupboard survive being jumped upon by cats?

    Considering the new print model that was introduced a few months ago; this video did not age well. Still a cool concept though.

    Only problem I have with French Cleats is the lack of any free wall space to put them up!

      There is always the back of the door 😅.
      With such success on there longer cleats I'm also going to explore super tiny ones at somepoint and see if they're just as useful.
