  • To answer a lot of questions I made my complete French cleat guide showing how to make your cleats, different mounting options, the science behind the cleats and different tips and tricks along with safety notes when cutting your cleats.
*** correction to the video I have a mistake in what I said was my measurement for cutting down a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood. You achieve 19 cleats and you’ll have a round a one and a half inch scrap piece left over this piece is great to be used for your first rung or your top rung since usually you’re not gonna have a functional cleat there.

@@BitnerBuiltquick question: When you were talking about the spacer blocks and them possibly having imperfect measurements, if one block is slightly shorter/longer then flipping the block wouldn't change the skew. Wouldn't you actually have to switch the blocks from left to right side in order to alternate and thus not exasperate the imperfection/skew?

I've been wanting to do a French cleat system for a few of years now. Long story short, I bought a sheet of 3/4" plywood and with a circular saw and a Bora track guide, made some cleats and mounted them on my garage wall. Initially, I was very pleased. But I quickly discovered how bad a job I did with my circular saw. So I decided it's time I invest in a table saw and redo my project.
In the mean time, I came across your video and it was VERY helpful. I have an old friend that lives hundreds of miles away that is also interested in French cleats but he just can't find the time to do it yet. I retired over a year ago and he's about to retire. So he's kind of depending on me to help guide him and avoid some mistakes I've already made. I've sent him many links of worthy French cleat videos but I told him that he MUST watch this one before proceeding.
BTW, I've not seen anyone use the framed foam to hold your hand tools as shown at 31:34. Yeah, I'll be giving that some strong consideration that when the time comes. I've liked and subscribed and expect to spend some hours watching your other videos. Thanks.

For your spacer blocks idea, If you keep your blocks orientation the same and switch them back and forth, move the left side to the right side and vice versa each level it will also cancel out any imperfection.

Hey im new and we are only 2 months old 🤣. I still can't believe that you're only two months into this journey and already have 7500 plus subscribers. This has to be some kind of a record, not only in you're favour but more so in RUclips's. The reason I say this is the last time a RUclips channel gained so many followers in such a short time frame was probably in the very early day of RUclips going online and people finding out what it was all about. At least you're now monitorised so in a financial way it's hopefully onwards and upwards from here on in. Congrats buddy it just goes to prove that you're definitely doing something right. This is the french cleat video RUclips has needed. Very high density of useful information and fantastic visual presentation with the close up side shots. About to build a french cleat garage wall for the house my partner and I just bought, and will be referencing this quite a bit. Subbed, looking forward to crawling through the rest of the channel, wishing you luck on your RUclipsr journey!

Great video. About to start a French cleat system in my shop. This video gave me the basics I needed to get started. Love the hand saw idea. Definitely gonna do that. You need a discord server 😉

I like how you went through so many details about his subject, ive seen a dozen about this, but yours is the first to kinda point out things that you need to keep in mind, and you inform very well how it works and why, so we can better understand how to avoid problems down the road when building this ourselves. Thank you and GJ. Subscriped and liked :) Have a nice day, looking forward to more of your videos.

Hi. Thanks for sharing yiur wisdom on French cleats. I was confused over the 2in cut of the 5 inch piece. Then realised your table saw blade tilts the opposite way to mine which tilts towards the fence. So I guess I set the fence to 2 3/4 inches. Good video. Thank you

Thanks! Try to place the fence on the other side of the blade and set to 2 in.

Spot on. This really helped reinforce my conversation with my son to help him understand that as a parent, I’ve not lived this experience myself but I know that it’s important to keep a balance and also to put down the screen ahead of going to bed.

Very nice informative video. I’ve watched several French cleat videos that show you how to make them but not really explain the physics of them. You did a wonderful job of that. I have a shed/workshop that is just studs. I’m stuck on insulating or not and so far have not found a perfect inexpensive wall covering. I think I’ll create an experimental wall for my adventure into cleats. Thanks for the information and inspiration. Liked, subscribed and commented.

Great Video!! I don't have a lot of tools, I do have a circular saw that tilts to the sides. Would like to see a demonstration using hand held power tools only, and how to clamp it for safety, I would much appreciated thank you sir.
