I think there's something so charming about someone unapologetically doing what they love, regardless of what anyone is going to think. I think Francis' sheer joy and excitement just sucks everyone in, regardless of how they feel about trains.
Tom, your podcast amaze me not only with who your guest are but also your ability to chat them up and get a throughly entertaining interview. Frances' enthusiasm rubs off very easily and has the audience in love with him. Thank you, Tom, for another brilliant podcast. 🎉❤🎉❤😊
I’ve grown up knowing about people who had this passion for trains. What I didn’t know was that a name, Trainspotter, was applied to this passion. I have always understood the feeling a Trainspotter must have because I’ve imagined the feeling going through the body. Why i always understood this is unknown, but i think it’s some underlying feeling inside of myself. When i was a child, i asked every Christmas for a train set. I never got one. To this day, many years later, that childhood memory sticks out like it was yesterday.
An intriguing interview about trains and riding the rails. We have watched Tom ride frequently during his Olympic quests and I am a fan. Unfortunately, in Canada, we have minimized, not maximized our rail potential across our vast country. My passion is steam locomotives but trains of any kind always give me pause to stop and look. Thanks again Tom.
Hey Tom, greetings from Australia - such an awesome approach to connecting with people, especially gems like Francis! Thanks and keep up this series, it's excellent!
I have an 8 yo son that LOVES trains. We live in StLouis, MO and unfortunately the Metrolink trains run in not the best neighborhoods. I wld love to take him to a cardinals baseball game on the train but so many ppl get robbed down there and I know like 7 ppl who have had their cars stolen by the ballpark so....I'm gonna have to wait till he's older and I'm afraid he won't love trains as much. I really hope he loves trains like this young man still does when he's older.
Francis your a really amazing genuine lad , many interests shared here . I grew up in the 80s about 3 streets away from Crewe station . Every night falling asleep listening to the 37s and HSTs drawing me to the platform . They sounded amazing yet terrifying . Was diesel obsessed and the 90s started the electronic music obsession . Then steam got me . I have lots of found ipottery with the old steam companies from Crewe works vintage dump . If we ever meet will happily donate some pottery . I have Autism mate and I definitely related to your personality more than once . Don't be offended but I would swear you have exactly what I have . It's that making you so Unique i think . Guy Martin , Elon musk , it's a great uniqueness
I grew up very intellectually inclined, and very autistic. This interview hit home with me. I loved drawing maps and trains growing up, along with city planning. It must be a gay/autistic thing. Boys, and men, are especially good at what is called "folk physics". It is what are brains are designed for. Folk physics is basically watching a ball being thrown in sports, a guy running down a field, or a person diving. Our brains are also especially designed for watching the trajectory of trains rolling down the track, watching cars going down the road, or watching planes taking off. I guess cooking would also count. Boys and men could watch and/or do these things for a very extended period of time, and not get tired of it. Great interview!

Suggestion: buy yourself an adult model train set for Christmas this year.
Tom’s ability to hold back the smile upon hearing (18:46) the train name, DickInMyButt is iconic!

Maybe when he gets older, a trip around Europe should be on his bucket list!

What a wonderful podcast! Great interview from Tom and fascinating to hear all about Francis’ hobby and lifestyle.
Everyone needs to love something as much as he loves trains.

And I also studied Geomatics Engineering in college.
I think he’s described himself as neuro diverse. I think I am too.
