Hello, I’m a Republican lawmaker, and while I’m heartbroken over Monday’s horrific elementary school shooting in Nashville, I’d appreciate it if people would stop asking me to do something to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
I’m a busy person, and there are many important issues I and my colleagues are addressing in our quest to make the world a safe place for children. For example, books. They are often bad. Lawmakers like myself at the local, state and federal level are doing everything we can to make sure dangerous books don’t wind up in the hands of children. Rep. Burchett suggested, we can’t possibly stop school shootings. Rep. Burchett suggested, we can’t possibly stop school shootings. Kind of a strange opinion (or very dumb) for a gun crazy Republican to use his WWII dad’s argument that you just can’t just do much about it if someone wants to shoot people. I thought their argument was that there need to be more “good people with guns” to stop the bad people with guns. The gun lobby that’s likely legally bribing him must be upset that he didn’t say “My dad who fought in WWII told me that when they got more and better guns… they the good guys did better and better at dealing with those bad guys who wanted to shoot them… Therefore we need to arm our teachers…”
But these politicians aren’t there because they are bright and think politicians duty ought to be to govern responsibly, but to implement anarchy in some areas (guns, the economy and business regulations, their religious freedoms) and tyranny in other areas (literature, women’s bodies, others religious freedoms), and to get well payed from the oligarchs for dong their biddings.

Assault weapon bans do work. Look what we did in Australia after the brutal massacre at Port Arthur. It was a terrible event that shocked the nation, so we turned in the guns we didn't need to hunt with (a .303 was all they needed anyhow). We stopped it at 35 dead, not let it snowball into thousands. Sure, there was some incidents, but they were few and far between! Not 130 times in a year. New Zealand did something similar in recent memory, as you know.
When I brought this up before here, some ignorant commenter told me we were doing it wrong. That criminalizing guns meant only criminals will have guns! No, no, no. Criminals very rarely have guns, because they either can't get them, or fail the background checks to get one. You are wrong, plain and simple. Security lights and footage stop home invasions just as much, and don't give you blood on your hands afterward.

@@stoopidpursun8140 that is a good question. The incidence of police reports of crimes of violence against women and children has increased. We consider this a public policy success . A few generations ago Police and competent agencies down played such: there was less reporting. We set out to change this. This has been effective. Eg, in the city of Melbourne in the 1970s about 40 women and children were killed by family members. This is now about 15-25 with the cities population doubling. Mind you most of the decline in deaths has been due to advances in medical science. But some due to law reform, better interagency cooperation, support services. One problem is that we actually make little effort to measure violent crimes in society. I assume you'll understand that Police reports are not a good indication of such. Ie, reports can go up so enable violence to be prevented. In the USA there is a Federal law that Govt agencies can not research fire arm violence. If you do nothing else: perhaps change that weird law
PS crimes against older persons have always been low. They continue to decline.

As a Canadian, I've never understood American gun laws. In Canada, it's illegal for civilians to possess automatic weapons or sawed-off shotguns or rifles, and there are very specific criteria that need to be met to own a handgun. Moreover, Concealed carry is generally prohibited.
Any time someone gets mad in public, I don't have to worry about them pulling a gun on me. I didn't fear for my life going to school.
