I'm 68 now, when I was 18 I did a real stupid thing and went into some place I had no business being. I learned something. According to the law, it doesn't matter even if a door is open, if you're someplace you shouldn't be you are breaking the law. Breaking & Entering, at least. And somehow I don't see climbing through the window as 'sight-seeing'.
Were you escorted by the police in that place you weren't supposed to be? Were you then held in a blacksite and given a three-and-a-half year sentence? Anyone who cares about justice should be worried about the uneven hand this story has been pushed by. Colbert has to make a fake video to justify the narrative he pushed for two years. Clearly all those people deserve punishment, but the extreme reaction that came out of this will be seen properly by future generations as the stain it is.

If they were indeed merely sightseers, there would have been no need to break down the police barricades, no need to break, and then climb in windows. Those mere acts, simply and alone are felony breaking and entering. Period, End of Story. Pay the fine, do the time and STFU.
My own personal experience was perhaps less than standard, but also a possible lesson. I broke the law, stupidly. Was convicted of a felony. Did county jail time and then probation for a set number of years. During that time, I kept my nose clean and successfully completed the probation. Petitioned the court to reduce my conviction from a felony to a misdemeanor, and was successful. A few years later I had the opportunity to enlist in a upper echelon level of the US Navy, so I once again petitioned the court, this time to expunge my record, and again I was successful. So, you see, sir, that even having messed up terribly, by admitting the mistake, doing what the Catholics call penance and being an upstanding citizen after life does go on.
But it starts with actually admitting the truth of the whole thing. That being it was an assault upon the US Government by individuals who had been callously misled, but nonetheless actually broke the law.
