John Paul Jones clearly demonstrates here why he's the secret sauce in the Zeppelin brew that holds the whole thing together. I've always thought that his piano interlude in 'No Quarter' anticipates Keith Jarrett's improvisations in his epic Köln Concert recording.
Hats off to JPJ. He's frequently overshadowed by his bandmates, but man, he always delivers.

It's always interesting to see the younger generation go to this way-back music. This was a time when the music, the musicians and their ability to play was key. It was all about the "vibe" back then. Music was an entire head, body, soul experience. And you had to have patience and listen with some songs going 10, 15, 20 minutes or more. Different times, but it was the best of times.

Spot on. It was a time when you dropped the needle and listened for the next 20+ minutes, no skipping, no repeat, no random. Then you’d listen to that side again and again, eventually turning over. Bands could create a 10, 15, 20 min track essentially made of multi segments seamlessly joined into classical piece.

Best of times indeed, music was both organic and exploratory back then, no or very little studio trickery like nowadays and not stuck in a soulless box except for a few bands like Halestorm or Liliac. I ran into someone reacting to the Carpenters of all things, had not heard Karen's voice in forever. It freaked out the reactors and me, they could not believe people from that era could do amazing music in a single take with no auto-tune. Times sure have changed, sigh...

The term No Quarter means no pity or mercy. used to say that an enemy, opponent, etc., is treated in a very harsh way. Take no prisoners with all dying on the battlefield, and the brave act of not asking for mercy when vanquished. Led Zeppelin started working on this song in 1971, recording early versions during the Led Zeppelin IV sessions. The version that made it to the album evolved out of a faster version they recorded earlier at Headley Grange, an old mansion in a remote part of England where they wrote and recorded many of their songs, including "Stairway To Heaven."

I may be wrong, this is just my guess, but I think this song is about the Knights Templar (the protectors of the ark of the covenant). So many of the lyrics hint at it: _The news they carry that must get through to build a dream for me and you_ is the covenant - the promise of god, _they choose the path where no one goes_ is the secretiveness of the knights, _the devil mocks their every step_ and _the winds of Thor are blowing cold_ is the hardship the knights endured, and _no quarter_ expressed how seriously they took their task (they were said to be very merciless). Robert Plant is a pretty serious Christian, so when I put that all together a story based on the Knights Templar is what I imagine.

The song appears to come from a fantasy type world. This is a cold, wintry viking world. These are hard men who are trekking through harsh winter weather. They are on a vital mission and, should they encounter any adversaries, they will not ask for mercy (ask no quarter) nor will they show any mercy (give no quarter). Someone somewhere I am sure knows the origin of the phrase ask no quarter, give no quarter. Anyhow, that is what the lyrics are about.

When it comes to reactions, I'm a firm believer that 95% of the time, the studio version is the best one to react to first. Live versions are best after you've already heard the studio versions to get to know the song. Especially a band like Led Zeppelin who often has live versions that are very different sounding than the studio versions. That being said, this song is the one Led Zeppelin song that the live version is just frigging awesome (from the "Song Remains the Same" live album (or live in Madison Square Garden, 1973). You can react to that, or just listen to it on your own if you want, but you should listen to it.

Now you need to do Tool's cover of this. Epic cover. Now, I found this explanation awhile back when I was wondering what the song was about and it seems pretty accurate to me. You decide.
The song and lyrics are in reference to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Both William the Conqueror and King Harald were of "Germanic" roots but the Norman Conquest was directly against a "Viking" King and ended the Danelaw that dominated the British Isles (particularly England) for several hundred years. This was a time of vicious battle where no quarter was given...Harald and his men were slaughtered in the attack. The Normans were well known for their superior steel blades and armour. The phrase "The winds of Thor were blowing cold" is a reference to the Norse God Thor and possibly the fact that ultimately this was a war between "Norse" people as opposed to outsiders. Thor's Hammer was often carried by Viking warriors as a "Good Luck Charm"...and in the case of the Battle of Hastings it proved not to work. So, either the "Good Luck Charm" had "gone cold" or the fact that two peoples sharing the same Pagan belief with the same Gods were fighting each other. The song almost certainly pertains to Middle Age Britain somewhere around the time between the first Viking raids in the seventh century and the Norman Conquest in 1066 AD. The song was written at a time that Led Zeppelin was heavily influenced by both Viking and Celtic mythology and history. This is expressed in the third, fourth and fifth albums in particular.

    • @Escapee5931
      @Escapee5931 2 года назад +4

I don't really see any tie between the song and the Battle of Hastings -
Both sides at the Battle were Christian, though I'm sure soldiers going into battle would still have good-luck charms. The Danelaw was mostly ended 100 years previously, with King Harold ruling over most of England (with varying degrees of control) by that time.
I think the song is about an unspecified band of Vikings raiding unspecified lands somewhere on the boundaries of history and fantasy.

It is an early military term. Since many pirates started out in the British or French Navy's the term most likely was continued to be used once they changed sides but it originated well before pirates were a thing.

Lex - Great reactions to music. Amazing emotional responses to the item presented to her ears. Vibrant comparisons to other tactile inputs and outputs. Agile listener that can't stop moving to, and being moved by music. Strong descriptive terms that cut to the heart of what a song can do to a person in an instant.
Brad - Amazingly confused as to what is going on between Lex's ears. Searching for meaning in the spots where there are none. Whiffing at the chance to engage with most tracks, or at least unwilling to explain verbally what he's thinking. Cmon Brad React! Says "yeah" to Lex's "Know what I mean?" when he definitely doesn't know what she means.

So "no quarter" is a military term used to denote showing no mercy; often to prisoners of war, or just in battle. Some have speculated that the song drew from the policy of no quarter during the Revolutionary War for colonists that refused to house British troops during the harsh winters...but when Plant says "the winds of Thor are blowing cold," it makes me think he's going back to the Vikings invasions again, as in Immigrant Song. As Jack Black said at the Kennedy Center Honors "they wrote songs about love, about Vikings...about Vikings making love." lol

Being an old fart of 57, I've had more than 49 years to figure out the meaning of this song. First, let me explain the phrase "no quarter": In medieval times, according to the laws of chivalry in combat, if a fight is taking place and one fighter is wounded, he can ask for 'quarter', which means he surrenders and begs not to be killed. If the fighter who is beating him is merciful, he gives 'quarter' to his opponent and lets him live. If, on the other hand, enemy warriors tell each other "I will give no quarter and ask none", it means the fight is to the death. There will be NO quarter. Now, about the song: It tells a story of a viking raiding party who is on a mission of conquest. They travel through a wintry landscape toward the lands of their enemy, and they plan to kill everyone and take their land. "They hold no quarter, they ask no quarter" ... the fight will be to the death, winner take all.

The story is heavily influenced by J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings and the struggle between good and evil they encounter along the way. Evil destroys and takes No Quarter. No Prisoners. This was all before the movies and the visual context they gave us. This was straight from the books and put to Epic music. The music is a representation of that struggle and so is not really danceable and the chord choices are very dissonant and unpleasant, which led you to that uncomfortable feeling Lex. Led Zeppelin are masters at making you feel what is hard to put into words.

Thank you for this explication. The term “no quarter” almost never comes up these days, unless in a conversation about the history of warfare. Your expansion on it, especially in the realm of Tolkien, helped me make further sense of what I thought I already understood. It explains the desperation in the music and the resilience of the speaker and his companions. Doom is coming; we must keep moving forward because there will be no quarter for any who live.
