This track, for all it's brilliance and virtuosity simply wouldn't work without John Bonham's drumming. IMHO this is the single best piece of drumming ever recorded.
This song was recorded after Robert Plant and his wife were nearly killed in a car accident in August 1975 while vacationing in the Greek island of Rhodes. It tells the story of "sandy lands on holiday", and also about their trip beforehand to the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. Plant sustained a shattered ankle and damaged Achilles tendon in the wreck, and had to record this song and album in a wheelchair after he tripped over some cables in the studio while on crutches. In their last two tours, he barely moved onstage from these injuries. The song takes its title from all that drama.
One of the reasons people love Led Zeppelin so much is because of a reason not a lot of people talk about. It's because of Jimmy Page's (the guitarist) incredible ability to orchestrate properly. That means that when Page composes a song, he makes sure the notes are not in the way of other notes so that every note can be clearly heard. Then, Page's 2nd producing talent is in panning the instruments so incredibly well so that the three instruments sound like a massively loud strong orchestra even though it's only three guys playing instruments and one guy singing. Then, Page would layer chorus and harmony guitar parts over his main guitar notes to produce the incredible Led Zeppelin sound.
@@mikefuchs-sb8pv Mike don't you get pissed out of your mind when today's rappers like Kanye West say they are Rock Gods as if the reason Rock music is not heard today on top 40 radio stations is because this shitty rap music overtook bands like Zep, Van Halen and Metalica ?? One of the best reactions from this channel, IMO!! Great to see Brad comprehending what they boys were trying to do on this track and noticing the clarity of the each part as it intertwines with the others. Organized chaos is such a great way to describe it. Jimmy Page put down no less than 6 guitar tracks layered on top of each other, while Bonzo just going ham. They took more influence from the East, on this one, as they had travelled to Morocco some months before recording this. Amazing track and reaction, guys. Cheers!
Achilles Last Stand is very complex on every level - arrangement, layers, lyrics . It took me a long time to get used the cord progression. Brad really got it.

It is partially about that but also partially about taxes. (No joke). Yeah, almost a 1/2 million people watching Led Zeppelin LIVE in a concert. CRAZY. Anyhow, the vibe of 'Achilles Last Stand' LIVE at that show is truly magically intensely INCREDIBLE. I think FINALLY you and Lex are beginning to understand what an electric guitar is. When you here a solo, as from Jimmy Page or any player, what the guitar is..... is SPEAKING to you not in words of a language but in an emotional language. The guitar is literally, talking emotion to you, screaming it, crying it, humming it, crooning it, whispering it etc., etc., etc. Each line of guitar is a SPEAKING VOICE. It is TALKING to you. Please try and remember that. The same goes for violin, viola, flute, saxophone, clarinet, oboe, cello..... They are speaking lines of language....but not specific WORDS but rather, emotion. People who do not understand music, whether rock or blues or classical, simply don't " get " that. They find the guitar solos as background music, or " cool " stuff, or just noise. Brad, listening to you summarize your reaction to this song is just spot on! I felt the same way hearing for the first time back when the album was released in 1975, at the age of 15. It's almost too much to comprehend. Lex, the "finger stuff" was pretty funny but, you nailed it with your comment about imagining each finger having its' own voice. Brilliant! I think you may be a budding hippy!
We are the same age, I did exactly the same thing - listening to this song takes me back to the good old 70's. This was the best decade for music. I can't believe our parents thought our music was crazy. We were like - whatever! We were too stoned to care : )
Ok, big Zeppelin track I just had to see this reaction for. So happy to see Brad understand Led Zeppelin a little more now. Led Zeppelin really is the cream of the crop. They can convert anyone to almost any genre they involved themselves in.
I heard this song once at a grocery store near closing, coming from the deli counter back room. I just stood there and listened until it ended. This song is so mesmerizing and epic. Try Tea for One for a deep cut, or Ten Years Gone for a classic
Every time I hear this song, it has me visualize some kind of anime version / anime music video of the movie *_Interstellar_* . That movie itself is extremely bittersweet, a little scary and very apocalyptic.
Never thought I’d see the day RUclips reactors were listening to Achilles last stand. It’s always been my favorite zeppelin song. When I was in high school our band played it for a battle of the bands.

My fav Zep song. Its just a massive journey of a song. Id say like most other Zep songs this one is also heavily influenced by Norse / Viking history as well as some JRR Tolkien. Insanely good drum work by Bonham and Page kept right up there with him.
Brad welcome, you are officially a Led Zeppelin fan. I watched you be hypnotized by this song. You were loving the lyrics while taking a ride on this Led Zeppelin song lol 😂, oh Lex you definitely are a zeppelin groupie, you are spot on about the fingers comments and that’s what Jimmy page does to ya. And just remember this band first broke onto the scene in 1967 so just imagine what it was like for us youngsters way, way,way back then to hear zeppelin music when most of the time we were freaking wasted and totally smoked out. Ohhhhhhhhh what a time to be ALIVE.
I was fortunate enough to have seen them live several times in the 70's. I just saw a Zeppelin tribute band, "Get the Led out".....great tribute band. You need to check out the following songs: "Dazed and Confused " , "Kashmir" and for Lexi, the "Lemon Song". If you want a great drum solo from Bonzo check out "Moby Dick"....great reaction. I love seeing a younger generation enjoying the music that I grew up on!

One of Zeps last albums. One of the toughest songs to drum to start to finish endurance wise. Real shame Bonzo died so young, all the guy were in their prime.
Watching Brad & Lex reaction on this song is like watching two individuals on the same rollercoaster ride with two different reactions, Brad is like White knuckling holding on the rail and yelling OMG, and Lex is cool calm and collective feeling all the clicks and flowing with the curves, and the peaks and valley's, i love you both ✌️😎
Bonzo is another planet on this one. Wtf. Him and Jimmy are locked in ( a musical oddity because normal its the bass and drums that are locked in together) and they just ramping it up until the very end.
This is very much a song that you listen to more and more and you get it more and more. It's one of my favorites. Play it on a rainy weekend morning on a stereo while making breakfast.

I saw Led Zeppelin live in 1980. They also played this song there. There is magic emanating from this song. I stood in front of the stage so well that I could see Bonham's footwork (bass drum).

He is SPEAKING to you with his emotional expression POURED out of his mind and soul...via his fingers, onto the neck of the guitar. The notes are literally a voice SPEAKING his emotions to you in sentences of FEELINGS....crying, wailing, talking, screaming and crying out more, etc. Pure unadulterated Emotional LANGUAGE. Get it?

And the Led Zeppelin journey continues!!✌️
Ok, big Zeppelin track I just had to see this reaction for. So happy to see Brad understand Led Zeppelin a little more now. Led Zeppelin really is the cream of the crop. They can convert anyone to almost any genre they involved themselves in.
Nice to see. An young Lady like her get into the zeppelin rollercoaster.
Welcome in the World of the Real music and greetings from germany
I heard this song once at a grocery store near closing, coming from the deli counter back room. I just stood there and listened until it ended. This song is so mesmerizing and epic. Try Tea for One for a deep cut, or Ten Years Gone for a classic
my top three zeppelin songs.
Fool In The Rain is another must.
Tea for One is ridiculously good. Perfect w headphones...
based and delipilled
Every time I hear this song, it has me visualize some kind of anime version / anime music video of the movie *_Interstellar_* . That movie itself is extremely bittersweet, a little scary and very apocalyptic.
Lex has the best reactions. Brad is good on this one too🙂👍
You have to see them do this live at Knebworth 1979! Fantastic!
Bonham is killing it on that performance.
Never thought I’d see the day RUclips reactors were listening to Achilles last stand. It’s always been my favorite zeppelin song. When I was in high school our band played it for a battle of the bands.
Hit the nail on the head! I've been proud to see Brad's journey and his progress as a listener :) You two are WONDERFUL!
Excellent song, one my Led Zeppelin favs, ty for reaction!
Damn...John Bonham beat the crap outta the drums on this one! Please do "In my time of Dying" or "Moby Dick" to see why John Bonham is one of the greatest drummers ever!
John Bonham is one of greatest rock drummers of all time RIP to a LEGEND!!! 🤟🤘🥁🔥🔥
And I was not expecting Lex to say I love fingers after listening to this tune 😂😂😂
I enjoyed your reaction! You guys are fun to see. This is just such a great song.
Soooo fun to watch these videos! Been lovin this music for 40 years and to see people react to this incredible music for the first time is too cool!!
Hearing Brad say he may be ready for instrumentals was great. May I recommend hearing Orion and Call of Ktulu from Metallica and Planet Caravan from Black Sabbath. You guys are awesome! 🤘🏼
Brad, Led Zeppelin's music is super diverse. No two songs are the same. Hence why they're the goats of rock!
Listening to Led Zeppelin is like opening up a box of candy.
Royal Orleans, Down by the seaside, The ocean, Battle of Evermore and on and on and on! Follow..Love Brad and Lex!
Brad makes his biggest breakthrough yet. LISTENING TO and FEELING the music, not reading lyrics...love it, grats ❤😁 yall may be ready now for more of the complexities of OPETH
The most underrated song of all time 💯💯💯💯💯
My fav Zep song.
For some fun covers, listen to Dread Zeppelin! I've seen pics of both Page & Plant wearing their T! Just fun - warning tho - some of the video/ audio quality varies! Lol
I had tickets to see them live for the In Through the Out Door tour!!!! Would had seen them in MSG!!!! Sad that Bonzo died thevway he did
one of the most complicated songs by Led Zeppelin ever recorded. and it stands up pretty well on the live version too.
Zeppelin and Queen are the two greatest rock bands of all time and they both lost legend’s early. RIP John Bonham and Freddie Mercury 😢
IMHO this is the best Zeppelin song. They were no slouches when it came to writing songs. Everyone shines on this track. It all came together.
Bonzo slappin the calf skins
Thank you for doing a Zeppelin song that I do not here every day on the radio. I love this song and the whole album.
One of Zeps last albums.
One of the toughest songs to drum to start to finish endurance wise.
Real shame Bonzo died so young, all the guy were in their prime.
Watching Brad & Lex reaction on this song is like watching two individuals on the same rollercoaster ride with two different reactions, Brad is like White knuckling holding on the rail and yelling OMG, and Lex is cool calm and collective feeling all the clicks and flowing with the curves, and the peaks and valley's, i love you both ✌️😎
By far my favorite Zep song. Best song sonically imo
Bonzo is another planet on this one. Wtf. Him and Jimmy are locked in ( a musical oddity because normal its the bass and drums that are locked in together) and they just ramping it up until the very end.
@@John_Locke_108 can't forget JPJ on the galloping! I tried playing this song both on bass and drums and it is one hell of a workout
The best Led Zeppelin song and the best intro and the best outro in rock.
Led Zeppelin was the only band of my youth that made me anticipate every new album and every new song! No bad Zeppelin...Only different Zeppelin.
This is very much a song that you listen to more and more and you get it more and more. It's one of my favorites.
Play it on a rainy weekend morning on a stereo while making breakfast.
Check out Nobody’s Fault but Mine from this album, it’s incredible!👍🔥🤘🏻🎧
One of the most talented band that ever was! Every album sounded different! Genius musicians, song writing, and vocals!
Touring was their Achilles heel. They lost so much time with their families and friends having fun and partying. It’s not about the greek hero.
This song gives me fucking goosebumps.
I remember when this album was released. This was my favorite song. The description that it is like two songs playing at the same time is perfect. Thanks for keeping Led Zeppelin fresh for me.
I saw Led Zeppelin live in 1980. They also played this song there. There is magic emanating from this song. I stood in front of the stage so well that I could see Bonham's footwork (bass drum).
