  • @henriettaskolnick4445

This song has a combination of influences. It basically tells the story of trips Jimmy and Robert took to Morocco. The tongue-in-cheek title is a reference to the broken leg (and other injuries) Robert sustained in a car crash; being compared to Achilles' weak heel, where if Achilles got hit there, he would die. There's a bit of William Blake's poetry when he mentions Albion. "Albion" used to be a poetic way to describe Britain. The "mighty arms of Atlas" refer both to the mythology of Atlas holding the world on his shoulders, as well as the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. This song is intense. I consider it the last of their "Epics" along with Stairway and Kashmir. Jimmy had 6 guitar tracks and managed to assemble and complete the entire song in one night. The album as a whole was completed in three weeks; the fastest they'd worked since their debut album. The staccato drumming sounds like a machine gun and John Paul Jones' galloping bass line imply swift, anxious movement. Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart readily admit they stole the bass line for their song Barracuda. Robert tells a story about a time he had a friend over to visit and while they chatted, he had music playing. At one point, he stepped out of the room and shortly thereafter, his guest came looking for him and told him they didn't want to be in the room alone anymore because the music playing was too intense. Intrigued, Robert came back to the room and the song playing was Achilles. This entire album is massively underrated; it is full of intensity, anxiety, anger, pain, - a lot of difficult emotions. I know you loved Zep's song Since I've Been Loving You; there's another phenomenal blues song on this same album called Tea For One - I SERIOUSLY recommend it - it will become one of your all time favorites.

I think Robert tried using crutches at the studio, but when leaving he tripped over a cable. Robert said Jimmy ran so fast to catch him, he didn’t think Jimmy could move that fast. He did sprain his ankle when he tripped, they had to take him to the hospital.

It was an April morning when they told us we should go
As I turn to you, you smiled at me
    How could we say no?
    Oh, the fun to have
To live the dreams we always had
    Oh, the songs to sing
When we at last return again
    Slipping off a glancing kiss
To those who claim they know
Below the streets that steam and hiss
    The devil's in his hole
    Oh, to sail away
To sandy lands and other days
    Oh, to touch the dream
Hides inside and never seen, yeah
Into the sun, the south, the north
At last the birds have flown
    The shackles of commitment fell
    In pieces on the ground
    Oh, to ride the wind
To tread the air above the din
    Oh, to laugh aloud
Dancing as we fought the crowds, yeah
To seek the man whose pointing hand
    The giant step unfolds
With guidance from the curving path
    That churns up into stone
    If one bell should ring
    In celebration for a king
So fast the heart should beat
As proud the head with heavy feet, yeah
Days went by when you and I
    Bathed in eternal summer's glow
    As far away and distant
    Our mutual child did grow
    Oh the sweet refrain
Soothes the soul and calms the pain
    Oh Albion remains
    Sleeping now to rise again
    Wandering and wandering
What place to rest the search?
    The mighty arms of Atlas
Hold the heavens from the earth
For the mighty arms of Atlas
Hold the heavens from the earth
    From the earth
I know the way, know the way, know the way, know the way
I know the way, know the way, know the way, know the way
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh oh
    Ah, ah, ah, ah
    Ah, ah, ah, ah
    Ah, ah, ah, ah

Jimmy Page is GOD! I get tears as well, Jimmy, Jimi Hendrix and David Gilmour of Pink Floyd turn me into a mess, have since the 60s!
One of many things Led Zeppelin was great at was the unbelievable epic, every album had a couple that were unusual in their structures, with multiple segments, evolving and building to emotional climaxes. They have so many great songs that are 7+ minutes in the studio that evolve live to 10 to 30 minute jams that are never the same but work in addition to, in the framework of the song we all know and love. A huge shout out to whoever chose this request, utterly spot on! You make me smile young lady, I get off on this music still and watching others discover it is way cool, always time for more Zeppelin! Do Tea For One from the same album, another epic and a blues classic, the tone on Page's guitar is a standard for heavy blues rock. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

Didn't expect this reaction, a Zep deep cut and one of the hardest tracks they ever released. This track feels like it's always climbing upwards, searching for heavier and heavier chords while buttressed by Bonham's frenetic drumming and JPJ's thumping bass, while Plant's soaring vocals elevate even higher. If the sacking of Rome had a soundtrack, this would be it, with the final doom chords on the outro announcing to the enemy, 'Look at what we've wrought!"

There's a lot tension in this album. Robert Plant had a really bad car in Aug of 1975 - his wife fractured her skull and almost died on the Greek island of Rhodes.
Robert shattered his ankle in car accident so badly - the doctors said he may not walk again. Their two children were in the car and had bumps and bruises as well.
This through a huge stadium tour which was to start in late Aug of 1975. It had to be canceled.
They recorded this album, Presence, in late 1975 and it was released March 31, 1976.
Robert Plant recorded all his vocals and harmonica playing from a wheelchair.
Achilles' Last Stand - he was a Greek god and his only weak point was his ankle. Hence, Robert being a god - his only weak spot was his ankled, which was shattered. A little bit o' acknowledging he's a god - LOL.
The songs lyrics are about Jimmy Page and Robert Plant riding up part of western Africa in a Land Rover and eventually ending up in the country of Morocco and seeing the Atlas Mountains. That's where they had to stop their adventure.
It got dangerous along the ride as they came upon and made it to and through several armed checkpoints.
Here are some lyrics which are relevant to telling their story:
"It was an April morning when they told us we should go
And, as I turned to you, you smiled at me, how could we say no ?"
"Into the sun, the south, the north
At last the birds have flown
    The shackles of commitment fell
    In pieces on the ground"
    "In wonderings and wanderings
What place to rest the search?
Where the mighty arms of Atlas
Hold the heavens from the earth"
"Where the mighty arms of Atlas
Hold the heavens from the earth
    From the earth"
Robert was away from his family for few months due to having to be on tax exile - to avoid paying too many taxes due to residency time of staying at home in England.
It's interesting the goodness or greatness of the song or possibly the drumming of John Bonham brought tears to your eyes. It happens to me when listening to Led Zeppelin sometimes too.
Led Zeppelin recorded this album was completed in 18 days and has a lot of tension in it. You can hear it in the misic for sure.
Led Zeppelin would release concert footage, from 3 nights at Madison Square Garden, recorded in late July 1973.
They released the concert movie "The Song Remains the Same" in Oct of 1976.
They embarked on a mammoth record breaking tour in April of 1977 and it ended on July 26th, 1977 - when Robert got a call from his wife, Maureen, at the Maison Duprey Hotel in New Orleans that their son, Karac (age 5) had died.
It cut the tour short and then John Bonham, age 32, died on Sept 25th, 1980. That was the end of Led Zeppelin.
Their drummer, John Bonham, was irreplaceable and they called it quits as a band. It's a triumphant and tragic story for sure.

If this is your intro to zeppelin then you have to start with Black Dog. Everyone knows that😉

I'm really glad you reacted to another Led Zeppelin song, just not this one. They have so many great songs that build up, or have unexpected changes. This one sounds the same throughout. I agree that the drums were fabulous. If you do another LZ reaction, I would suggest doing a live performance because they are very entertaining to watch. I would suggest reacting to their song Kashmir live at Knebworth 1979 official video. As usual I enjoyed your reaction very much

This song and the album, Presence, was recorded after the epic, Physical Graffiti. A lot was going on in the band and ultimately this album was not well received.

Gallup is a public opinion polling company - it gallop is what horses do and would be compared to the rhythm of this song.

No disrespect women..but this is a fighting mans song. And I know Zepp was always trying to reach the women, but Ive always thought it was kind of silly. Women are never going to feel like men do when they go to the battlefield. For most men it's an honor.

@@juliemanarin4127I just read your other post. I didn’t know it was a LIVE version and how were we supposed to know that? I was 8 yrs old in 1979. And Angela made no mention of it being a live version so even our host didn’t know. And as far as “knowing music”, listening to/streaming albums is NOT a singular experience. Others your age may not have been listening to Zeppelin in 1979. Does that mean that they “don’t know music”? Everything isn’t for everybody no matter how some ppl think (and try to impose) that there should only be 1 human experience.

I am a huge Zeppellin fan but this song doesn't rate high on my list, sorry. Too long and too convoluted for my tastes, plus Robert Plant sounds strained to carry off lyrics. I'd be hitting skip, or as we used to do, get off my ass and lift up the needle 😅
    Luv u for jamming tho!
