@bc2198 yes, it's the same galloping drum pattern but Barracuda was released in 1977, one year after Achilles Last Stand so it was probably inspired by this song.
Well… they certainly were one of the best live bands in any decade. The 70’s is tough for any band to claim the title of best. They were one of the best… ever.
It was an April morning when they told us we should go As I turn to you, you smiled at me How could we say no? Oh, the fun to have To live the dreams we always had Oh, the songs to sing When we at last return again Slipping off a glancing kiss To those who claim they know Below the streets that steam and hiss The devil's in his hole Oh, to sail away To sandy lands and other days Oh, to touch the dream Hides inside and never seen, yeah Into the sun, the south, the north At last the birds have flown The shackles of commitment fell In pieces on the ground Oh, to ride the wind To tread the air above the din Oh, to laugh aloud Dancing as we fought the crowds, yeah To seek the man whose pointing hand The giant step unfolds With guidance from the curving path That churns up into stone If one bell should ring In celebration for a king So fast the heart should beat As proud the head with heavy feet, yeah Days went by when you and I Bathed in eternal summer's glow As far away and distant Our mutual child did grow Oh the sweet refrain Soothes the soul and calms the pain Oh Albion remains Sleeping now to rise again Wandering and wandering What place to rest the search? Supposedly Page laid down all these orchestral guitar overdubs in one night. They did the whole album in 3 weeks or some crazy thing like that, record, mixed, finished.
This song has a combination of influences. It basically tells the story of trips Jimmy and Robert took to Morocco. The tongue-in-cheek title is a reference to the broken leg (and other injuries) Robert sustained in a car crash; being compared to Achilles' weak heel, where if Achilles got hit there, he would die. There's a bit of William Blake's poetry when he mentions Albion. "Albion" used to be a poetic way to describe Britain. The "mighty arms of Atlas" refer both to the mythology of Atlas holding the world on his shoulders, as well as the Atlas Mountains in Morocco. This song is intense. I consider it the last of their "Epics" along with Stairway and Kashmir. Jimmy had 6 guitar tracks and managed to assemble and complete the entire song in one night. The album as a whole was completed in three weeks; the fastest they'd worked since their debut album. The staccato drumming sounds like a machine gun and John Paul Jones' galloping bass line imply swift, anxious movement. Ann and Nancy Wilson from Heart readily admit they stole the bass line for their song Barracuda. Robert tells a story about a time he had a friend over to visit and while they chatted, he had music playing. At one point, he stepped out of the room and shortly thereafter, his guest came looking for him and told him they didn't want to be in the room alone anymore because the music playing was too intense. Intrigued, Robert came back to the room and the song playing was Achilles. This entire album is massively underrated; it is full of intensity, anxiety, anger, pain, - a lot of difficult emotions. I know you loved Zep's song Since I've Been Loving You; there's another phenomenal blues song on this same album called Tea For One - I SERIOUSLY recommend it - it will become one of your all time favorites.
@@anitapaulus937I thought his leg was crushed really bad, they didn’t know if he’d walk again, he was in a wheelchair for about a year. I think Robert tried using crutches at the studio, but when leaving he tripped over a cable. Robert said Jimmy ran so fast to catch him, he didn’t think Jimmy could move that fast. He did sprain his ankle when he tripped, they had to take him to the hospital.
I highly recommend Zeppelin's double live album titled The Song Remains the Same. ! You Tube has taken most of it down but it's a must if you want to see Zeppelin live. You could do it as an album review .

Didn't expect this reaction, a Zep deep cut and one of the hardest tracks they ever released. This track feels like it's always climbing upwards, searching for heavier and heavier chords while buttressed by Bonham's frenetic drumming and JPJ's thumping bass, while Plant's soaring vocals elevate even higher. If the sacking of Rome had a soundtrack, this would be it, with the final doom chords on the outro announcing to the enemy, 'Look at what we've wrought!"
Jimmy Page is GOD! I get tears as well, Jimmy, Jimi Hendrix and David Gilmour of Pink Floyd turn me into a mess, have since the 60s! One of many things Led Zeppelin was great at was the unbelievable epic, every album had a couple that were unusual in their structures, with multiple segments, evolving and building to emotional climaxes. They have so many great songs that are 7+ minutes in the studio that evolve live to 10 to 30 minute jams that are never the same but work in addition to, in the framework of the song we all know and love. A huge shout out to whoever chose this request, utterly spot on! You make me smile young lady, I get off on this music still and watching others discover it is way cool, always time for more Zeppelin! Do Tea For One from the same album, another epic and a blues classic, the tone on Page's guitar is a standard for heavy blues rock. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

There's a lot tension in this album. Robert Plant had a really bad car in Aug of 1975 - his wife fractured her skull and almost died on the Greek island of Rhodes. Robert shattered his ankle in car accident so badly - the doctors said he may not walk again. Their two children were in the car and had bumps and bruises as well. This through a huge stadium tour which was to start in late Aug of 1975. It had to be canceled. They recorded this album, Presence, in late 1975 and it was released March 31, 1976. Robert Plant recorded all his vocals and harmonica playing from a wheelchair. Achilles' Last Stand - he was a Greek god and his only weak point was his ankle. Hence, Robert being a god - his only weak spot was his ankled, which was shattered. A little bit o' acknowledging he's a god - LOL. The songs lyrics are about Jimmy Page and Robert Plant riding up part of western Africa in a Land Rover and eventually ending up in the country of Morocco and seeing the Atlas Mountains. That's where they had to stop their adventure. It got dangerous along the ride as they came upon and made it to and through several armed checkpoints. Here are some lyrics which are relevant to telling their story: "It was an April morning when they told us we should go And, as I turned to you, you smiled at me, how could we say no ?" This song and the album, Presence, was recorded after the epic, Physical Graffiti. A lot was going on in the band and ultimately this album was not well received.
No disrespect women..but this is a fighting mans song. And I know Zepp was always trying to reach the women, but Ive always thought it was kind of silly. Women are never going to feel like men do when they go to the battlefield. For most men it's an honor.
@@juliemanarin4127I just read your other post. I didn’t know it was a LIVE version and how were we supposed to know that? I was 8 yrs old in 1979. And Angela made no mention of it being a live version so even our host didn’t know. And as far as “knowing music”, listening to/streaming albums is NOT a singular experience. Others your age may not have been listening to Zeppelin in 1979. Does that mean that they “don’t know music”? Everything isn’t for everybody no matter how some ppl think (and try to impose) that there should only be 1 human experience.
I am a huge Zeppellin fan but this song doesn't rate high on my list, sorry. Too long and too convoluted for my tastes, plus Robert Plant sounds strained to carry off lyrics. I'd be hitting skip, or as we used to do, get off my ass and lift up the needle 😅 Luv u for jamming tho!

Slipping off a glancing kiss
To those who claim they know
Below the streets that steam and hiss
The devil's in his hole
Oh, to sail away
To sandy lands and other days
Oh, to touch the dream
Hides inside and never seen, yeah
Into the sun, the south, the north
At last the birds have flown
The shackles of commitment fell
In pieces on the ground
Oh, to ride the wind
To tread the air above the din
Oh, to laugh aloud
Dancing as we fought the crowds, yeah
To seek the man whose pointing hand
The giant step unfolds
With guidance from the curving path
That churns up into stone
If one bell should ring
In celebration for a king
So fast the heart should beat
As proud the head with heavy feet, yeah
Days went by when you and I
Bathed in eternal summer's glow
As far away and distant
Our mutual child did grow
Oh the sweet refrain
Soothes the soul and calms the pain
Oh Albion remains
Sleeping now to rise again
Wandering and wandering
What place to rest the search?
The mighty arms of Atlas
Hold the heavens from the earth
For the mighty arms of Atlas
Hold the heavens from the earth
From the earth
I know the way, know the way, know the way, know the way

If this is your intro to zeppelin then you have to start with Black Dog. Everyone knows that😉
I get the impression, that if you can't dance to it, you're not into it..??
This song and the album, Presence, was recorded after the epic, Physical Graffiti. A lot was going on in the band and ultimately this album was not well received.
It has aged well for everyone I know, another great Led Zeppelin album.
I received it very well!!
ha . what you go thru for your subscribers , I never saw anyone dance to Achilles last stand
No disrespect women..but this is a fighting mans song. And I know Zepp was always trying to reach the women, but Ive always thought it was kind of silly. Women are never going to feel like men do when they go to the battlefield. For most men it's an honor.
at rhythm is called a Gallup
Gallup is a public opinion polling company - it gallop is what horses do and would be compared to the rhythm of this song.
A Greek god?. That's pretty close for an American. Well done love.
The live version I think is better ruclips.net/video/wPXM3mY-dGQ/видео.html
Unsubscribed and took back my like. Reactors who never make any comments down below and interact with others making comments don't get my support..
Unnecessarily long. Thank u, next!
Next? This live 1979 at knebworth. You obviously don't know music
You’re a Greek Goddess
Musical masterpiece...🙏🇦🇺🇺🇸🙏
I am a huge Zeppellin fan but this song doesn't rate high on my list, sorry. Too long and too convoluted for my tastes, plus Robert Plant sounds strained to carry off lyrics. I'd be hitting skip, or as we used to do, get off my ass and lift up the needle 😅
Luv u for jamming tho!
