The storyteller is telling his tale and then moving on. He tried, but realized that he was not going to change her. in his heart he loved her, but in the end he knew it wouldn't last, because she was who she was, and she didn't want to change. Lesson learned. Another blues classic from LZ.

It's kind of a theme with Robert. Fool In The Rain is the same. He's fallen in love with a woman that either plays around or is a working girl, and is in that painful realization that he's not going to get the commitment he wants. Which is funny cuz another theme is that he's gonna get restless and have to Ramble On himself

Many of LZs songs throughout their career were re-makes of old American Blues some dating back to the 1920s. This was one of them. And many with lyrics that are hyper-sexual or violent are taken from these early relics. That made more sense to me when I originally thought Robert Plant had a great sense of American levee and dam history. It's a real thing and many tragedies existed hence the blues song When The Levee Breaks. Thank you again Brad & Lex!

This is such a cool song! It was originally not available on any album but was a B-Side to the single for "Immigrant Song." I first heard it getting air time on a radio station while in College at Cornell. Being the huge Led Zeppelin fan that I was, I immediately wanted it in my collection, so I called the radio station and requested it, and even asked the DJ to announce it before playing so I could get a clean recording of it (knowing that it wasn't available for purchase anywhere back then). He of course didn't announce it and talked over the first several seconds of it, but nevertheless, it was my only recording of this song for several years until I got the Led Zeppelin Box Set somewhere around 1990. A kleptomaniac friend of a dog walker stole a some of my classic rock CD's including at least one of the disks from the Led Zeppelin Box Set, so some years later, I bought a new box set which contained all the albums of Led Zeppelin. There was an album released in the early 1980s posthumously called Coda. The original release of CODA did not have this song. Yet the complete works of Led Zeppelin (on CDs) that I bought sometime around 2006 or so has this song on the Coda album along with another formerly unavailable-on-album track that was on the 1990 box set, "Traveling Riverside Blues" that was recorded live at the BBC at sometime in LZ's history. So please, next react to "Traveling Riverside Blues." Fantastic blues number with Jimmy Page on the slide guitar.

I have a buddy who had a similar situation with this song and proactively bought that 4 disc box set. There was a 2nd mini 2 disc box set that came fter and was all the songs not on that boxset (Babe come on home is the absolute nugget on it). I purchased that and we were in heaven. To this day (over 25 years have passed) he says it was such a worthy investment for both Hey Hey and Travelling Riverside Blues.

The bass carries a lot of the song. The drumming is excellent The fast part at the end is just normal mandolin playing.

@@johnr.8275 : Same thing in "Ramble On". The guitar chord changes are easy, but the bass is what carries the song with Bonzo's bodhran playing a steady tap, too.

This song wasn't on any of their albums when John Bonham passed away. So they included it on Coda with the rest of the songs they had saved up for future releases.

It only went on Coda after the first boxed set in 1990. They remastered the entire catalog, and after the original 2 boxed sets, they re-released the individual albums, and put the extra songs that were not originally on albums, on the new version of Coda.
