Dear Complainers, After briefly reading through the comments, I noticed a few of my book reader colleagues thought they'd complain on this behind the scenes posting. Well, I want to complain about my fellow book readers. This isn't the books. It isn't called "A Song of Ice and Fire", it's an adaptation that respects the arcs of the characters. BTW, I didn't like Jojen paste, I didn't like the Tysha crap in the books, Lady Stoneheart can meet Brien next year, the Lannister brothers love each other and the zombies were quality. So, listen to the freaking audiobooks and use your imagination if you want to see it the way it was in the books. And these creators have spoke to George RR Martin and the parties have signed contracts. Contract which give them unprecedented access to each characters arc.. Do any of you have manuscripts? And I personally believe you are crazy if you thought not having Lady Stoneheart and Jaime's betrayal in the end of season 3 would have been an unbelievable level of epic.
The fact that you branded yourself "Reasonable Bookreader" makes you seem very vain. Also, are you sure you read the books, because I'm pretty sure Brien... is spelled Brienne, also, zombies??? You mean wights, right? The Tysha crap is what gave Tyrion a reason to go to the tower of the hand, and confront Tywin, and finding Shae. When Jamie didn't tell him, I thought to myself, what's Tyrion's motives for going to the tower now? It turns out his motives were, "Just cuz". Also, what's the point of having an opinion in the world anymore, if people just call you complainers, that's the point of giving criticism. D&D clearly need a lot of criticism to get it right, but they still don't. They literally don't care what we think, on the ASOIAF page, they posted a thread a long time ago, saying they would take our opinion into consideration on different things, and when we check how long ago they were last active, it was the day they posted that. Stannis scene was pretty good though, and I liked it the best obviously. Also, now Jaime doesn't know about Cersei cheating on him, so now he'll keep having sex with her like nothing ever happened. They're really screwing this up for me.

Stoneheart appearance would have had people losing their shit as much, if not more than the Red Wedding. Would've made for colossal buzz. No legitimate reason short of "actor unavailable" could justify cutting something worth that level of hype/shock/people talking

ian malcolm Yep. It was a chance to really make a statement, and have every viewer buzzing for next season. Instead, book readers, as a general rule are disappointed, and it's more time for people who only watch the show to be spoiled by someone. Just doesn't really make sense, especially seeings as D&D have been pretty good about getting the big moments right.
Wow, I've read the books but sometimes wish I hadn't. Not because they're not good, or because the show makes changes.. Because the people who I share this experience with all seem to be spoiled 12 year olds who CRY and CRY anytime anything at all gets changed or left out or whatever.. GET OVER IT! And this episode was a shit adaptation. The truths about Tysha and Cersei being revealed were completely cut out and are pivotal to Tyrion and Jaime's character development. They fucked up on that one.
Brienne defeated jamie (admittedly he was weaker) but she also beat loras tryell, so is it ridiculous to say that she might actually stand a chance against the hound?
No, it's not. Besides, she's fresh and healthy with brand new armor and a bad ass sword. Meanwhile they had The Hound road weary, injured, and fighting an infection. So her winning in this situation is quite feasible.
I really like her and think she's great, but I think the Hound would have probably beaten her had it not been for his neck wound. She might have a chance. Even still, it's not clear he would have lost if he didn't happen to fall off that rock face there. She's good, don't get me wrong. She beat Jamie, though he was weak and malnourished, you could tell she wasn't in full attack mode because she didn't want to kill the guy. I don't know why people are mentioning Loras. Loras is great on a horse, he's decent at sword play but nowhere near as good as his older brother Garlan.
a full strength hound? yes. that would be ridiculous. there's no way she could take him. but this hound was severely weakened. arya commented weeks ago that his bite wound had made him a lot slower....he's battling septicaemia, as well as endless travel on the road with barely any food or water, he's wounded already, so he's already going to be in pain, with decreased strength and movability of his arm/shoulder
This was by far my favorite episode of the series. Jon Snow and Stannis in the same scene. Tywin finds out about Cersei and Jamie. Dragons looked great. Finally get some answers with Bran's mission. Brienne and Hound fight. Tyrion getting some revenge. Arya has some great character development. GOD I LOVE GAME OF THRONES!
I can't be the only who thought the episode looked a bit rushed? - I understand it was supposed to be a surprise moment,but where did Stannis come from? Really? He traveled all the way from Braavos just because Melisandre told him so? - The fight between Sandor and Briene just looked pointless and unnecessary to me. They just met each other and they already fought? The conflict could have been solved without fighting. The Hound died literally for nothing. - Where the hell did Arya get a horse at the end? - Why did Jaime free Tyrion exactly? Sure,it was to be expected,but there's no prior explanation. All of a sudden in middle of the episode,we only see a scene of Jaimie entering Tyrion's cell and freeing him. Nothing else.
-Davos read the letter saying that the Wall needs help, he told Stannis and he realized that instead of becoming King he must save the Realm. He came by ship, the Eastern Castle in the Wall has a port. -Sandor and Brienne, dunno, not in the books. -I'm presuming Arya found Brienne's horse? -Jaime freed Tyrion because he was his brother pretty much, and for some other reasons, check the books for that
Study some maps of Westeros. You can see how he would have been able to get there. If you think about his Hand, who was a smuggler and had a meeting with Salladhor Saan, can it give you an idea?
Sandor is paranoid and Brienne seemed like an assassin. It COULD'VE been solved with words, but Brienne was dead-set on getting Arya, and Hound didn't believe her. Fight commenced. Made sense.
Stannis didn't come to the wall because Melisandre told him so. He decided to to go there, when he realized that the realm was in danger. At least in the books that was the reason.
But it will be a great season. They have so many plotlines now. My Suggestion for season 5: spoiler Danys reign in meeren, jon is the new lord commander and deals with the wildling problem, stannis at the wall and fighting the boltons, ramsays wedding, victarion and eurom greyjoy, jaime ending the last battles in the riverlands, cerseis downfall, arya in bravoos, sansa and littlefinger in the vale, the martells in dorne, tyrion meeting illyrio and aegon with jon connington, quentin martells journey, ser jorah meeting tyrion, brienne meeting lady stoneheart, bran learning from the 3 eyed raven, sam going to oldtown and the siege of stormsend. Not all of this will be in season 5 but i cant wait
This is one of the fewest inside the episodes where they reflect on more than three scenes because they tend to focus on three crucial scenes in most featurettes of an episode. I guess this episode just had one too many powerful scenes that they couldn't overlook and they did the same with The Mountain and the Viper featurette because that episode had just as many powerfully crucial moments.
With the season done I will say my final words here: Dear Book-Readers, congratulations! You won. By spoiling me every mayor death this season I will pick up the books so you can't spoil me anything anymore. It's really sad. I couldn't enjoy this episode. Maybe it was better than the red wedding.. I don't know because you spoiled me everything... Joffrey, Oberyn, Tywin! Thanks a lot. Maybe it's my own fault for going in this comment section in the first place but I thought this was about the show and not about the books. But I get it.. I was dumb enough to believe that the people on the internet actually care about another and all are just here to have fun and enjoy the episodes... One thing I didn't like.. in the books although Oberyn died, Gregor was in constant pain 24/7 due to the poison which was practically a fate much worse than Oberyn's. Such compensation didn't exist in this episode which was a shame.

Great episode! I knew Stannis would help at the wall, something had to give. Dany locking up her dragons was sad, but had to be done. Really intrigued by Bran and co getting to the three eyed raven and the children of the forest. Awesome fight with those skeleton warriors. Arya vs Brienne was a great fight. Tyrion taking out Shae and Tywin, epic! Arya heading to Bravos is interesting, look forward to seeing where her character goes from here. Maybe learn more about swordfighting or going to find Jaqen? Really great episode, just sucks the season is over.
That was one hell of a father's day for Tywin... he finds out that his "golden son," and the one he didn't care for as much as Jaime, but more than Tyrion, have been sleeping together for years and that his whole legacy is basically a big sham... and then his one kid who actually took after him the most, smarts wise, KILLS HIM. HAPPY FATHER'S DAY TYWIN!

They left out Tysha to make Shae seem more important. That's a shame because Tyrion's revenge for Tysha greatly changed his relationship with Jaime as well as made him want to murder Tywin.

I guess a lot of people will be really upset over LS missing. I think it would have been an amazing ending to the season, because nobody would have seen it coming. But I guess they thought it was too fantasy for their taste. I think them taking Tysha out is way worse....they don't have the courage to take Tyrion on the same path as in the books, he'll still be Saint Tyrion. I hate the word whitewashing, but it fits.

Why did you have to replace Tysha? It makes no sense at all! Tyrion killing Tywin for saying Shae's a whore is ridiculous. At this point Tyrion has no reason to doubt that she IS a whore and has been all along. If you're going to say that show Shae is different from book Shae then why does she still get into bed with Tywin? That is completely out of character for the good-hearted non-whore character that show Shae is supposed to be. Why was Tysha's story even introduced at all if it's not used when it becomes important? How is anything that happens after this explainable without her? Without "wherever whores go" Tyrion has no destination and no reason to go on at all. He doesn't even have an immediate reason to go up and kill his father in that moment without the anger that the Tysha revelation caused him. Why can't you show Tyrion as the complex and flawed character that he is instead of whitewashing all of his actions? The murder of Symon Silvertongue was cut, him lusting over Sansa is cut, killing Shae is in self-defense and he's sorry afterwards.... It's like the writers can't stand it when he does anything questionable because he's the "good guy".

She's only mentioned more than once through Tyrion's thoughts. As this is a television series, they cannot have a character monologue in thought process. This isn't anime. Tyrion shooting Tywin because of Shae makes no sense in the context of the BOOKS, but remember that we're not watching the books. We're watching the series, something that both the creators, directors, writers and George R.R. Martin have stressed are similar in many ways, but are also very different. Imagine if Tyrion had lamented about Tysha to Tywin in the context of the show. Not only would it make little to no sense to bring up a character mentioned only once, but that same character has no relevance to Show-Tyrion or his emotional turmoil. Lastly, they do, frequently, present Tyrion as complex and flawed. The speech with Jaime in "The Mountain and the Viper" as well as his speech at the end of Episode 7 show this. Yes, Tyrion is a lot more of a lighter gray in the series than he is in the novels, but like I brought up before, some things can work in popular shows and others cannot. In order for this show to be successful, the audience, by default, needs a "good guy" to relate and connect to.
D&D screwed up sooooo bad with Lady Stoneheart! It would have been the best cliffhanger in tv history but they threw it out the trash. I still had a little bit of hope left for them but now it's gone.

I don't know why, but I interpreted the part with Arya and the Hound differently from watching the show. Does it make sense that she reaches for the water, but actually wants to torture him for hours before he dies? Does it make sense that she has a conversation with him about how she wanted to kill Joffrey herself rather than just "know he's dead"... and wished she had seen the look in his eyes while she did it, but somehow doesn't care for the look in the hound's eyes. Does it make sense that in her travells with him she learns to mercy-kill wounded travellers, and somehow prefers not to do it at the crucial moment? Does it make sense that she hasn't tried to run away from him all this time, and choses to go check on him and ask him if he'll survive, but despises him enough to torture him and abandon him? I don't think so. I don't think Arya wants to torture the hound for having slain her friend years ago. It just doesn't make sense. I believe that she grew emotionally attached to him and just said what she usually says to the God of death. I think Arya was too weak to kill her friend. And I know that's not what she says she does in the book, and I know that's not what the show's producers said... but it just makes more sense to me. Likewise, I don't think Tyrion killed his father because of whatever familly buisness they had. He killed him for the same reason Petyr kills: impossible love. It's the second time now that Tyrion is shown by his father that the women who love him love him because of money and circumstances, but have no loyalty (1 night wife story from season 2). It's this craving for impossible love from a whore which really makes him shoot. It's the words "dead whore" that he can't accept.
Umm...if she was just too weak to kill her "friend"...why did she steal his bag of silver? Remember, he once told her "Dead men don't need silver." I think the water, the hesitation, etc., were happening because she was thinking about what she wanted to do, and in the end, the gift of mercy wasn't in the cards...yet, at the same time, she left him alive, leaving the ultimate choice to the Gods, his innate hardiness, or sheer chance. We may not have seen the last of Sandor...
I think likewise. To me this sounds like some decision the author had made before actually being at that point of the story, which is why it stantds out in contrast to the actual way her character developped. There is probably a reason why he wanted him to survive.
What about the part where Jamie tells Tyrion the truth about his wife Tysha? They didn't even get to the part where they elect a new Lord Commander of the Nights Watch. It literally looks like they took out all of the parts we would rather see and replaced it with that generic crap instead.
I wish they would have kept that bit in about Tysha, certainly adds to Tyrions motive. Although i'll look forward to episode 1 of next season, i think is a good time to introduce the new Lord Commander ....

I haven't even read the book but I knew that Brienne didn't kill sandor. On my opinion maybe oberyn can beat him and Jaume as well as the mountain could give him a fight, apart From that he can't be beaten especially by her. This was a bad exit for the hound and didn't take into account his injury
Spoiler-y question for book readers... ... ... ... ... ... ... What do you think is going to happen with the Ramsay-Bolton-marries-Arya storyline? Are they going to just toss in some random girl to be Jeyne Poole (and be all, "Oh, by the way, this girl was part of the Stark household but we've never seen or mentioned her before...")? I have a sinking feeling that he's going to get a whiff that Sansa's still alive and decide to marry her (which might be a bigger motivation for Theon to snap out of his trance). What do y'all think?
Slightly disappointed with the finale.. The changes they made from the book seem unnecessary and don't make sense IMO. I'm curious to see where it will go. I acknowledge it was a good episode, but hold the opinion that it could have been far, far better. :/
The thing is, the showrunners know how it's going to end. This means that we indeed have no idea if the changes are simply to avoid unnecessary complication. For example Lady Stoneheart could be totally irrelevant to the overall story and thus she'd just be taking away screentime.
Dominik Kensy lmao, OR the far more logical idea.....she is going to show up in the next season XD People thought the same with the Reeds because they weren't in S2 the very moment people thought they were supposed to show up, but they most certainly showed up in S3. Just because we haven't seen her yet doesn't mean we should immediately assume she is never coming. Cold Hands on the other hand....that's a character I truly wonder if he has been cut. Cause they're kinda past the point where his mysterious role would be relevant since Bran found the Children.
It was Stannis who brought his suspicions to Jon Arryn, who decided to investigate the matter further before bringing it to Robert. Stannis never liked Eddard Stark seeing as Robert chose him as a brother. Stannis also threatened to destroy Rob Stark, so I wouldn't talk about a "deep found respect" for Ned and his family.
LCNighthawk While I would have loved to see LS, I understand why they haven't included her yet. I personally couldn't think of a better way for them to start the 5th season than with LS. Since they have been including some tidbits from the other books, I wasn't really surprised that they could be saving her for later.
As a show-watcher (primarily, catching up on the books and may get impatient and read ahead before the next season) I found this episode kind of underwhelming. I mean there was some pretty important character development with the likes of Arya and Tyrion but I just feel like the climax wasn't there. Season 1, 2 and 3 all ended fantastically (dragons, Others and Mhysa respectively) but this ending was just... Meh? Having accidentally read book spoilers about a certain Lady S I feel like they could have teased that to end on a shocking note. It would've made for a good Ep10 trend (epic, terror, epic, terror) like what they've got for Ep9 trends (shock, battle, shock, battle).
As someone who is currently reading part one of ASOS, I adore the show. I think it is absolutely amazing. The changes are not all good, but some thing they have changed for the better (Dany's conquest of Astapor, for example). The books are great. The show is also great. If you treat them as two separate entities, which they ARE, then you should have nothing to be overly concerned about and can go about your lives. Calm the fuck down. Talking shit about a masterpiece like this just because it's not as good as the books (to you) is cutting off your nose to spite your face. This is the best television show ever, in and of itself. As someone who began watching the show last year before reading the books almost alongside it, I confess to enjoying both equally. Maybe the show even more, as I am amazed by the superb acting and casting, and the fucking brilliant soundtrack. I just don't know why people are preventing themselves from enjoying the show by constantly grinding away at a dull and repetitive point that they have absolutely no control over. Seems ridiculous and a waste of time, imo.
I've had an off feeling about this season more then the past one's, and I was wondering why. Now i'm truly convinced David and Dan dumbed this season down, even further then the previous seasons, in response to the shows sudden uproar of popularity due to the red wedding. That Tyrion scene this episode was so disappointing it's not even funny.
Im done with this show, I had been spoiled about a couple things, most importantly Lady Stoneheart last season, I thought it would be in the season 3 finale, waited a year, thought it would be this episode but nope. They set it up so perfectly this season, they promised a jam packed epic finale but no. No dragons coming, no winter coming, LS storyline is really cool but no. Im just going to read the books now, hopefully they are better!
I got my sister to finish book 3 before the last episode of season 4 because I knew they'd ruin it and I didn't want her to experience the inferior version of the plot twists. She couldn't be more thankful. She just finished it about 3 hours before the episode aired and couldn't stop talking to me about it. She was extremely excited to see it on TV. She was disappointed. People will say I'm an annoying book reader and think they're being the smart reasonable good guys who understand HBO and TV medium and parallel story and yada yada yada, but the reality is exactly what my sister just experienced. They could have shown everything that disappointed us within the limits of TV, but they felt he need to add fillers until they had no time left to show what actually happens so they just skipped stuff, replacing the amazing story with uninspired scenes like when the eunuch unsullied gets aroused by Missandei's tits (except maybe the due to actor hiring issues). This isn't a case of "the book is better than the show because there's more detail in the books." This is a case of "the book is better than the show because the book's story is better than the show's." Just read the books.

It would be pointless to use her to generate buzz for the beginning of a season, since people will already be watching. She would be better used as something to tide fans over between seasons. Oh well, at least now she can be better set up. I'm hoping for clues about her existence being sprinkled throughout season 5, including people stumbling upon Frey corpses and such. Would serve better than just throwing her in there. So as much as I wanted her to show up, I can live with the thought now that she'll have a proper entrance next year. I don't expect her to show in the first episode though. She'll either be in the finale or later in the season, although that sort of revelation would lead me to believe a finale appearance.
I liked the episode but The Children and the Bloodraven look like shit, they could have made that setting so magical but it seems they didn't feel like paying the makeup artists anything. Really my only gripe besides them not showing The Horn of Winter.

First season = A Game of Thrones Second Season = A Clash of Kings Third and Fourth seasons = Mixed parts of the other tree. There are still a lot of content from book 4 and 5 to air next season. About the books, there are five of them, but in some countries they divided each in 2 parts, because they are too big for local standards.
It might be just my opinion here as someone who read the books but...the last two episodes completely fucking sucked. The Battle at the Wall had 0 build up or tension, felt rushed, completely sucked and was just boring as hell with a series of "Oh that looked like it hurt" moments, and the finale just felt like a really expensive version of HBO saying "Fuck the books, this is what should happen". Tyrion didn't have his "Fuck you" moment with Jamie, Shae's death felt very glossed over, Brienne Vs. The Hound was like fan fiction, The Children of The Forest went from small, dark skinned people with large eyes to an actual children with blonde hair, for some weird reason Gandalf turned up Beyond the Wall, there was no Coldhands or Lady Stoneheart and for no real decent reason Cersei decided to tell Tywin "Hey, guess what - I fucked my brother". Overall....I am really starting to dislike what HBO is doing with the source material, but again that might just be me expecting too much but fuck it, there are better shows on TV to watch atm, I'll just stick to the books from now on

Yeah, you're really biased. Both episodes were technically really well done and all made sense in their own canon. Specially episode 9, the finale had some pacing problems. Expecting it to be like the books is foolish at this point.
J Jo The problem with Episode 9 was this....there was no pacing at all, no build-up, no tension, nothing, you can be technically good all you want but if the story or mood isn't there to back it up you're wasting time, HBO showed that they could do a battle episode the right way in Season 2 with The Battle of Blackwater Bay. Hell if you wanted to break it down there isn't much difference between The Battle at The Wall and Helms Deep in LOTR, they are pretty much carbon copies of each other, you have a small "Good Guy" force inside of a castle/keep being attacked by a larger, more dominating force of "Bad Guys" who have the intention of completely wiping them out, from there you build the tension, build it and build it to a point where it seems all hope is lost for the Night's Watch and then you have Stannis come and "Save the day", you don't have a crucial moment like that begin an episode when it is blatantly obvious that the arrival of Stannis is something to end an episode with. You also don't suddenly decide "Hey let's kill of Grenn and Pip because someone needs to die here", that...is seriously lazy writing considering the body count that the battle actually has. I'm not saying it has to be exactly like the book but jesus christ it is starting to become HBO Fan Fiction hour atm
***** No I just think that when a couple of fans of the books (like Weiss and Benioff claim to be) adapt the source material into a television show, I fully expect them to do a decent job of it, not hack and slash the source material apart and copy, paste and delete characters and events into whatever order they seem to think makes sense, and in some cases erase characters and events which are really important to the overall story, and in some cases put the cart before the horse and show scenes which haven't even appeared in the books yet or at all

Without doubt the most exciting finale yet. So much happened, all past seasons have been about picking up the pices of the major event in episode 9 :P Most action-packed season of them all, three last episodes were all sick!
Sansa has feelings for The Hound but is conflicted. Some speculate that The Hound is now her direwolf replacement. George was a writer/producer for Beauty & the Beast so there is a tie in.
So many negative comments! Just my opinion here…I think this is the best television show ever made. From the writing to the acting, cinematography, production, character development, action, suspense etc. It's fantastic. I think they are doing a terrific job squeezing so much content into 10 episodes per season. I understand the purist book readers viewpoint but please consider that it could have been completely different to the books if the producers elected to make it that way. Enjoy the books, nothing beats directing your own story in your own mind when reading and using our own imagination to do so. TV and movies are never going to compare to reading and having our own visions with no limitations imposed by budgets and time constraints. As far as the show goes, it's the most satisfying and exhilarating I have ever seen.

After briefly reading through the comments, I noticed a few of my book reader colleagues thought they'd complain on this behind the scenes posting. Well, I want to complain about my fellow book readers. This isn't the books. It isn't called "A Song of Ice and Fire", it's an adaptation that respects the arcs of the characters.
BTW, I didn't like Jojen paste, I didn't like the Tysha crap in the books, Lady Stoneheart can meet Brien next year, the Lannister brothers love each other and the zombies were quality. So, listen to the freaking audiobooks and use your imagination if you want to see it the way it was in the books.
And these creators have spoke to George RR Martin and the parties have signed contracts. Contract which give them unprecedented access to each characters arc.. Do any of you have manuscripts? So, continue to enjoy the programming and be respectful of their show; as is George.

The Tysha crap is what gave Tyrion a reason to go to the tower of the hand, and confront Tywin, and finding Shae. When Jamie didn't tell him, I thought to myself, what's Tyrion's motives for going to the tower now? It turns out his motives were, "Just cuz".
Also, what's the point of having an opinion in the world anymore, if people just call you complainers, that's the point of giving criticism. D&D clearly need a lot of criticism to get it right, but they still don't. They literally don't care what we think, on the ASOIAF page, they posted a thread a long time ago, saying they would take our opinion into consideration on different things, and when we check how long ago they were last active, it was the day they posted that.
Stannis scene was pretty good though, and I liked it the best obviously.
Also, now Jaime doesn't know about Cersei cheating on him, so now he'll keep having sex with her like nothing ever happened. They're really screwing this up for me.

Instead, book readers, as a general rule are disappointed, and it's more time for people who only watch the show to be spoiled by someone. Just doesn't really make sense, especially seeings as D&D have been pretty good about getting the big moments right.

And this episode was a shit adaptation. The truths about Tysha and Cersei being revealed were completely cut out and are pivotal to Tyrion and Jaime's character development. They fucked up on that one.
Brienne defeated jamie (admittedly he was weaker) but she also beat loras tryell, so is it ridiculous to say that she might actually stand a chance against the hound?
No, it's not. Besides, she's fresh and healthy with brand new armor and a bad ass sword. Meanwhile they had The Hound road weary, injured, and fighting an infection. So her winning in this situation is quite feasible.

I really like her and think she's great, but I think the Hound would have probably beaten her had it not been for his neck wound. She might have a chance. Even still, it's not clear he would have lost if he didn't happen to fall off that rock face there. She's good, don't get me wrong. She beat Jamie, though he was weak and malnourished, you could tell she wasn't in full attack mode because she didn't want to kill the guy. I don't know why people are mentioning Loras. Loras is great on a horse, he's decent at sword play but nowhere near as good as his older brother Garlan.
a full strength hound? yes. that would be ridiculous. there's no way she could take him. but this hound was severely weakened. arya commented weeks ago that his bite wound had made him a lot slower....he's battling septicaemia, as well as endless travel on the road with barely any food or water, he's wounded already, so he's already going to be in pain, with decreased strength and movability of his arm/shoulder

This was by far my favorite episode of the series. Jon Snow and Stannis in the same scene. Tywin finds out about Cersei and Jamie. Dragons looked great. Finally get some answers with Bran's mission. Brienne and Hound fight. Tyrion getting some revenge. Arya has some great character development. GOD I LOVE GAME OF THRONES!
I can't be the only who thought the episode looked a bit rushed?
- I understand it was supposed to be a surprise moment,but where did Stannis come from? Really? He traveled all the way from Braavos just because Melisandre told him so?
- The fight between Sandor and Briene just looked pointless and unnecessary to me. They just met each other and they already fought? The conflict could have been solved without fighting. The Hound died literally for nothing.
- Where the hell did Arya get a horse at the end?
- Why did Jaime free Tyrion exactly? Sure,it was to be expected,but there's no prior explanation. All of a sudden in middle of the episode,we only see a scene of Jaimie entering Tyrion's cell and freeing him. Nothing else.
-Davos read the letter saying that the Wall needs help, he told Stannis and he realized that instead of becoming King he must save the Realm. He came by ship, the Eastern Castle in the Wall has a port.
-Sandor and Brienne, dunno, not in the books.
-I'm presuming Arya found Brienne's horse?
-Jaime freed Tyrion because he was his brother pretty much, and for some other reasons, check the books for that
Study some maps of Westeros. You can see how he would have been able to get there. If you think about his Hand, who was a smuggler and had a meeting with Salladhor Saan, can it give you an idea?

Danys reign in meeren, jon is the new lord commander and deals with the wildling problem, stannis at the wall and fighting the boltons, ramsays wedding, victarion and eurom greyjoy, jaime ending the last battles in the riverlands, cerseis downfall, arya in bravoos, sansa and littlefinger in the vale, the martells in dorne, tyrion meeting illyrio and aegon with jon connington, quentin martells journey, ser jorah meeting tyrion, brienne meeting lady stoneheart, bran learning from the 3 eyed raven, sam going to oldtown and the siege of stormsend. Not all of this will be in season 5 but i cant wait

This is one of the fewest inside the episodes where they reflect on more than three scenes because they tend to focus on three crucial scenes in most featurettes of an episode. I guess this episode just had one too many powerful scenes that they couldn't overlook and they did the same with The Mountain and the Viper featurette because that episode had just as many powerfully crucial moments.

One thing I didn't like.. in the books although Oberyn died, Gregor was in constant pain 24/7 due to the poison which was practically a fate much worse than Oberyn's. Such compensation didn't exist in this episode which was a shame.

Great episode! I knew Stannis would help at the wall, something had to give. Dany locking up her dragons was sad, but had to be done. Really intrigued by Bran and co getting to the three eyed raven and the children of the forest. Awesome fight with those skeleton warriors. Arya vs Brienne was a great fight. Tyrion taking out Shae and Tywin, epic! Arya heading to Bravos is interesting, look forward to seeing where her character goes from here. Maybe learn more about swordfighting or going to find Jaqen? Really great episode, just sucks the season is over.
I was yelling "Show Aria the freaking Wolf Bread the boy made for her!" That entire scene played with my heart strings.

That was one hell of a father's day for Tywin... he finds out that his "golden son," and the one he didn't care for as much as Jaime, but more than Tyrion, have been sleeping together for years and that his whole legacy is basically a big sham... and then his one kid who actually took after him the most, smarts wise, KILLS HIM.

-The Mountain not being in excruciating pain from the poison, he should be in WAY more agony than Oberyn was
-Brienne coincidentally meets Arya and Hot-Pie within days of each other in a country the size of South Africa and fights the Hound for no reason in terribly shot action sequence
-Tyrion killing Shae in self defense instead of straight up rage, and trying to force that Tyrion still loves her afterward
-They killed Jojen, pretty much confirming his relevance in the books is over
-The Children of the Forest are literally children who throw fucking fire balls
-Varys gets on the fucking boat
-Fucking up absolutely everything about Bloodraven, he's just a fucking old guy in a cave
-Cutting Lady Stoneheart as the perfect season closer

I guess a lot of people will be really upset over LS missing. I think it would have been an amazing ending to the season, because nobody would have seen it coming. But I guess they thought it was too fantasy for their taste. I think them taking Tysha out is way worse....they don't have the courage to take Tyrion on the same path as in the books, he'll still be Saint Tyrion. I hate the word whitewashing, but it fits.

Tyrion killing Tywin for saying Shae's a whore is ridiculous. At this point Tyrion has no reason to doubt that she IS a whore and has been all along. If you're going to say that show Shae is different from book Shae then why does she still get into bed with Tywin? That is completely out of character for the good-hearted non-whore character that show Shae is supposed to be.
Why was Tysha's story even introduced at all if it's not used when it becomes important? How is anything that happens after this explainable without her? Without "wherever whores go" Tyrion has no destination and no reason to go on at all. He doesn't even have an immediate reason to go up and kill his father in that moment without the anger that the Tysha revelation caused him.
Why can't you show Tyrion as the complex and flawed character that he is instead of whitewashing all of his actions? The murder of Symon Silvertongue was cut, him lusting over Sansa is cut, killing Shae is in self-defense and he's sorry afterwards.... It's like the writers can't stand it when he does anything questionable because he's the "good guy".

Apparently you don't understand how television works. Tysha, in the novels, is a character mentioned more than once. The problem there? She's only mentioned more than once through Tyrion's thoughts. As this is a television series, they cannot have a character monologue in thought process. This isn't anime.
Tyrion shooting Tywin because of Shae makes no sense in the context of the BOOKS, but remember that we're not watching the books. We're watching the series, something that both the creators, directors, writers and George R.R. Martin have stressed are similar in many ways, but are also very different. Imagine if Tyrion had lamented about Tysha to Tywin in the context of the show. Not only would it make little to no sense to bring up a character mentioned only once, but that same character has no relevance to Show-Tyrion or his emotional turmoil.
Lastly, they do, frequently, present Tyrion as complex and flawed. The speech with Jaime in "The Mountain and the Viper" as well as his speech at the end of Episode 7 show this. Yes, Tyrion is a lot more of a lighter gray in the series than he is in the novels, but like I brought up before, some things can work in popular shows and others cannot. In order for this show to be successful, the audience, by default, needs a "good guy" to relate and connect to.

D&D screwed up sooooo bad with Lady Stoneheart! It would have been the best cliffhanger in tv history but they threw it out the trash. I still had a little bit of hope left for them but now it's gone.
To be honest there was no build up to her reveal, it would raise more questions to non book readers. But i agree with you it would be pretty cool to see it but i guess the showrunners want to save it for season 5 so it can be more fleshed out.

It would have been a cliffhanger because all season there was no mention of her at all and when she shows up youve just realised all season she was running around hanging freys but you dont know how this came to happen.

I don't know why, but I interpreted the part with Arya and the Hound differently from watching the show.
Does it make sense that she reaches for the water, but actually wants to torture him for hours before he dies?
Does it make sense that she has a conversation with him about how she wanted to kill Joffrey herself rather than just "know he's dead"... and wished she had seen the look in his eyes while she did it, but somehow doesn't care for the look in the hound's eyes.
Does it make sense that in her travells with him she learns to mercy-kill wounded travellers, and somehow prefers not to do it at the crucial moment?
Does it make sense that she hasn't tried to run away from him all this time, and choses to go check on him and ask him if he'll survive, but despises him enough to torture him and abandon him?
I don't think so. I don't think Arya wants to torture the hound for having slain her friend years ago. It just doesn't make sense. I believe that she grew emotionally attached to him and just said what she usually says to the God of death. I think Arya was too weak to kill her friend. And I know that's not what she says she does in the book, and I know that's not what the show's producers said... but it just makes more sense to me.
Likewise, I don't think Tyrion killed his father because of whatever familly buisness they had. He killed him for the same reason Petyr kills: impossible love. It's the second time now that Tyrion is shown by his father that the women who love him love him because of money and circumstances, but have no loyalty (1 night wife story from season 2). It's this craving for impossible love from a whore which really makes him shoot. It's the words "dead whore" that he can't accept.
Umm...if she was just too weak to kill her "friend"...why did she steal his bag of silver? Remember, he once told her "Dead men don't need silver." I think the water, the hesitation, etc., were happening because she was thinking about what she wanted to do, and in the end, the gift of mercy wasn't in the cards...yet, at the same time, she left him alive, leaving the ultimate choice to the Gods, his innate hardiness, or sheer chance. We may not have seen the last of Sandor...
I think likewise. To me this sounds like some decision the author had made before actually being at that point of the story, which is why it stantds out in contrast to the actual way her character developped. There is probably a reason why he wanted him to survive.

What about the part where Jamie tells Tyrion the truth about his wife Tysha? They didn't even get to the part where they elect a new Lord Commander of the Nights Watch. It literally looks like they took out all of the parts we would rather see and replaced it with that generic crap instead.

I haven't even read the book but I knew that Brienne didn't kill sandor. On my opinion maybe oberyn can beat him and Jaume as well as the mountain could give him a fight, apart From that he can't be beaten especially by her. This was a bad exit for the hound and didn't take into account his injury

What do you think is going to happen with the Ramsay-Bolton-marries-Arya storyline? Are they going to just toss in some random girl to be Jeyne Poole (and be all, "Oh, by the way, this girl was part of the Stark household but we've never seen or mentioned her before...")? Slightly disappointed with the finale.. The changes they made from the book seem unnecessary and don't make sense IMO. I'm curious to see where it will go. I acknowledge it was a good episode, but hold the opinion that it could have been far, far better. :/
The thing is, the showrunners know how it's going to end. This means that we indeed have no idea if the changes are simply to avoid unnecessary complication. For example Lady Stoneheart could be totally irrelevant to the overall story and thus she'd just be taking away screentime.
Dominik Kensy lmao, OR the far more logical idea.....she is going to show up in the next season XD People thought the same with the Reeds because they weren't in S2 the very moment people thought they were supposed to show up, but they most certainly showed up in S3. Just because we haven't seen her yet doesn't mean we should immediately assume she is never coming.
Cold Hands on the other hand....that's a character I truly wonder if he has been cut. Cause they're kinda past the point where his mysterious role would be relevant since Bran found the Children.

It was Stannis who brought his suspicions to Jon Arryn, who decided to investigate the matter further before bringing it to Robert. Stannis never liked Eddard Stark seeing as Robert chose him as a brother. Stannis also threatened to destroy Rob Stark, so I wouldn't talk about a "deep found respect" for Ned and his family.

Since they have been including some tidbits from the other books, I wasn't really surprised that they could be saving her for later.

As a show-watcher (primarily, catching up on the books and may get impatient and read ahead before the next season) I found this episode kind of underwhelming. I mean there was some pretty important character development with the likes of Arya and Tyrion but I just feel like the climax wasn't there. Season 1, 2 and 3 all ended fantastically (dragons, Others and Mhysa respectively) but this ending was just... Meh?
Having accidentally read book spoilers about a certain Lady S I feel like they could have teased that to end on a shocking note. It would've made for a good Ep10 trend (epic, terror, epic, terror) like what they've got for Ep9 trends (shock, battle, shock, battle).

As someone who is currently reading part one of ASOS, I adore the show. I think it is absolutely amazing. The changes are not all good, but some thing they have changed for the better (Dany's conquest of Astapor, for example). The books are great. The show is also great. If you treat them as two separate entities, which they ARE, then you should have nothing to be overly concerned about and can go about your lives. Calm the fuck down. Talking shit about a masterpiece like this just because it's not as good as the books (to you) is cutting off your nose to spite your face. This is the best television show ever, in and of itself. As someone who began watching the show last year before reading the books almost alongside it, I confess to enjoying both equally. Maybe the show even more, as I am amazed by the superb acting and casting, and the fucking brilliant soundtrack. I just don't know why people are preventing themselves from enjoying the show by constantly grinding away at a dull and repetitive point that they have absolutely no control over. Seems ridiculous and a waste of time, imo.

Oh season five, season five. Why must you give me so much pain!
I've had an off feeling about this season more then the past one's, and I was wondering why. Now i'm truly convinced David and Dan dumbed this season down, even further then the previous seasons, in response to the shows sudden uproar of popularity due to the red wedding. That Tyrion scene this episode was so disappointing it's not even funny.
Dany's scene could have waited until next season. That was a waste. They could have also cut Jon's scene of burning the body.

Im done with this show, I had been spoiled about a couple things, most importantly Lady Stoneheart last season, I thought it would be in the season 3 finale, waited a year, thought it would be this episode but nope. They set it up so perfectly this season, they promised a jam packed epic finale but no. No dragons coming, no winter coming, LS storyline is really cool but no. Im just going to read the books now, hopefully they are better!

The books are much better. The show is outstanding but they are not even in the same arena as the books.
I got my sister to finish book 3 before the last episode of season 4 because I knew they'd ruin it and I didn't want her to experience the inferior version of the plot twists. She couldn't be more thankful. She just finished it about 3 hours before the episode aired and couldn't stop talking to me about it. She was extremely excited to see it on TV. She was disappointed.
People will say I'm an annoying book reader and think they're being the smart reasonable good guys who understand HBO and TV medium and parallel story and yada yada yada, but the reality is exactly what my sister just experienced. They could have shown everything that disappointed us within the limits of TV, but they felt he need to add fillers until they had no time left to show what actually happens so they just skipped stuff, replacing the amazing story with uninspired scenes like when the eunuch unsullied gets aroused by Missandei's tits (except maybe the due to actor hiring issues).
This isn't a case of "the book is better than the show because there's more detail in the books." This is a case of "the book is better than the show because the book's story is better than the show's." Just read the books.

I doubt that. LOST certainly proved the power of a game changing end-scene for each of its seasons.
It would be pointless to use her to generate buzz for the beginning of a season, since people will already be watching. She would be better used as something to tide fans over between seasons.
Oh well, at least now she can be better set up. I'm hoping for clues about her existence being sprinkled throughout season 5, including people stumbling upon Frey corpses and such. Would serve better than just throwing her in there.
So as much as I wanted her to show up, I can live with the thought now that she'll have a proper entrance next year.
I don't expect her to show in the first episode though. She'll either be in the finale or later in the season, although that sort of revelation would lead me to believe a finale appearance.

I liked the episode but The Children and the Bloodraven look like shit, they could have made that setting so magical but it seems they didn't feel like paying the makeup artists anything. Really my only gripe besides them not showing The Horn of Winter.

About the books, there are five of them, but in some countries they divided each in 2 parts, because they are too big for local standards.

It might be just my opinion here as someone who read the books but...the last two episodes completely fucking sucked. The Battle at the Wall had 0 build up or tension, felt rushed, completely sucked and was just boring as hell with a series of "Oh that looked like it hurt" moments, and the finale just felt like a really expensive version of HBO saying "Fuck the books, this is what should happen". Tyrion didn't have his "Fuck you" moment with Jamie, Shae's death felt very glossed over, Brienne Vs. The Hound was like fan fiction, The Children of The Forest went from small, dark skinned people with large eyes to an actual children with blonde hair, for some weird reason Gandalf turned up Beyond the Wall, there was no Coldhands or Lady Stoneheart and for no real decent reason Cersei decided to tell Tywin "Hey, guess what - I fucked my brother". Overall....I am really starting to dislike what HBO is doing with the source material, but again that might just be me expecting too much but fuck it, there are better shows on TV to watch atm, I'll just stick to the books from now on

Yeah, you're really biased. Both episodes were technically really well done and all made sense in their own canon. Specially episode 9, the finale had some pacing problems. Expecting it to be like the books is foolish at this point.
J Jo The problem with Episode 9 was this....there was no pacing at all, no build-up, no tension, nothing, you can be technically good all you want but if the story or mood isn't there to back it up you're wasting time, HBO showed that they could do a battle episode the right way in Season 2 with The Battle of Blackwater Bay. Hell if you wanted to break it down there isn't much difference between The Battle at The Wall and Helms Deep in LOTR, they are pretty much carbon copies of each other, you have a small "Good Guy" force inside of a castle/keep being attacked by a larger, more dominating force of "Bad Guys" who have the intention of completely wiping them out, from there you build the tension, build it and build it to a point where it seems all hope is lost for the Night's Watch and then you have Stannis come and "Save the day", you don't have a crucial moment like that begin an episode when it is blatantly obvious that the arrival of Stannis is something to end an episode with. You also don't suddenly decide "Hey let's kill of Grenn and Pip because someone needs to die here", that...is seriously lazy writing considering the body count that the battle actually has. I'm not saying it has to be exactly like the book but jesus christ it is starting to become HBO Fan Fiction hour atm
***** No I just think that when a couple of fans of the books (like Weiss and Benioff claim to be) adapt the source material into a television show, I fully expect them to do a decent job of it, not hack and slash the source material apart and copy, paste and delete characters and events into whatever order they seem to think makes sense, and in some cases erase characters and events which are really important to the overall story, and in some cases put the cart before the horse and show scenes which haven't even appeared in the books yet or at all

Without doubt the most exciting finale yet. So much happened, all past seasons have been about picking up the pices of the major event in episode 9 :P Most action-packed season of them all, three last episodes were all sick!

Sansa has feelings for The Hound but is conflicted. Some speculate that The Hound is now her direwolf replacement. George was a writer/producer for Beauty & the Beast so there is a tie in.

So many negative comments! Just my opinion here…I think this is the best television show ever made. From the writing to the acting, cinematography, production, character development, action, suspense etc. It's fantastic. I think they are doing a terrific job squeezing so much content into 10 episodes per season. I understand the purist book readers viewpoint but please consider that it could have been completely different to the books if the producers elected to make it that way. Enjoy the books, nothing beats directing your own story in your own mind when reading and using our own imagination to do so. TV and movies are never going to compare to reading and having our own visions with no limitations imposed by budgets and time constraints. As far as the show goes, it's the most satisfying and exhilarating I have ever seen.
